Ronald Gasser Arrested for Manslaughter in Shooting Death of Ex-NFL Player Joe McKnight

Ronald Gasser, the man who shot and killed ex-NFL player Joe McKnight, was arrested for manslaughter Monday, December 5, according to the website for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff"s Office. Glasser is being held without bond.

Gasser, 54, was initially taken into police custody after the December 1 shooting, which occurred after an apparent road rage incident in a New Orleans suburb, but was released from jail the next day without being charged pending further investigation.

The Associated Press reported that Gasser shot mcknight, 28, three times from inside his car as the athlete stood near his passenger window during a verbal fight at an intersection in Terrytown, Louisiana. When authorities arrived at the scene, Gasser handed them his gun and confessed to shooting McKnight, who was reportedly unarmed.

Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand said that although McKnight was black and Gasser is white, race did not play a role in the case.

The AP reported that Gasser was previously involved in a road rage altercation at the same intersection in February 2006. He was issued a misdemeanor summons for simple battery, but the charge was later dismissed.

McKnight played three seasons with the New York Jets before being cut in training camp in 2013. The NFL team held a moment of silence in honor of the athlete, who also played one season with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2014, during a game against the Indianapolis Colts at East Rutherford, New Jersey"s MetLife Stadium Monday, December 5.

Ex-NFL player Joe McKnight killed in apparent road rage shooting


A friend of Joe McKnight remembers him after his killing

Joe McKnight, a star running back at the University of Southern California who went on to play for part of four seasons in the NFL, was shot and killed Thursday in a possible road rage shooting in his home state of Louisiana, authorities said.

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff"s Office said the shooting happened shortly before 3 p.m. local time at a busy intersection in the New Orleans suburb of Terrytown.

WVUE reported that multiple witnesses sawa man in an Infiniti sedan pulled McKnight, 28, from his Audi and shot him multiple times after a verbal altercation. Witnesses said the shooter then waited for police to show up.

Jefferson Paris Sheriff Newell Normand identified the shooting suspect as Ronald Gasser, 54. The sheriff said Gasser and McKnight exchanged words after a traffic incident, but did not go into further detail.

Normand added that Gasser relinquished his weapon to officers, was taken into custody and was being questioned by police. It was not immediately clear what he would be charged with.

In 2009, McKnight rushed for over 1,000 yards in his senior season at USC. He was drafted by the New York Jets in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL Draft and spent three seasons with the club before moving on to play two games for the Kansas City Chiefs during the 2014 season.

WVUE reported that McKnight had just completed his first season playing for the Canadian Football League"s Saskatchewan Rough Riders.

McKnight is the second NFL player this year to die as a result of a possible road-rage incident. Saints player Will Smith was killed in April.
