Ailing Atletico"s Title Hunt Halted

Atletico were always relying on Barcelona to make an error in their end-of-season run-in if they were to win the title, but the race is now out of their hands following a 1-1 draw at Levante.

ESPN FC"s Dermot Corrigan provided evidence of Levante as something of a bogey team for Atleti over the past decade or so:

Manager Diego Simeone"s side have now lost two matches in succession for the first time since January, leaving not only Barca but alsoReal ahead of them in time for this season"s Primera Division curtain call.

The defeat is particularly embarrassing when one considers it came against a team Atletico won"t even face in Spain"s top flight next season, per Yahoo Sports" Andrew Gaffney:

Mathematically speaking, Atleti could still draw level on points with Barca if they manage to beat Celta Vigo next Saturday and their rivals drop to Granada, but their two losses to the leaders this season make it impossible for them to win the league.

Nevertheless, Simeone and his troops can look to the Champions League final opposite bitter rivals Real as a welcome consolation, with many sure to value European success above their domestic fairytale.

Messi Momentum Keeps Barca Bubbling

Messi"s free-kick opened the scoring against Espanyol.

One more win. With one more win, Barcelona will have put the finishing touches on a second successive Primera Division crown, with Lionel Messi again starring as the driving force behind their push.

The Argentinian ace opened the scoring against Espanyol with a superb free-kick on Sunday, his fourth goal in five league games, as Sky Sports La Liga showed:

With Atletico losing out and Real rising to second, ESPN FC"s James Tyler noted the table now resembles what we"ve become accustomed to seeing in Spain"s top flight:

Suarez netted twice and was joined on the scoresheet by MSN team-mate Neymar, along with Rafinha, who scored just seconds after entering the derby fixture in the second period.

Manager Luis Enrique knows what his team must do to claim the crown, and Barcawill travel to Granada next Saturday looking to win by any means necessary.
