College World Series 2016: Latest Results and Updated Picks for Sunday

1991 College World Series Highlights

Ronald Irby/Associated Press

With the first day of Bracket 1 play in the books, the four remaining teams in the 2016 College World Series will take the field Sunday for their opening contests.

The Florida Gators are the top-ranked team coming into the tournament, but they will have to play great baseball to take down a pesky Coastal Carolina Chanticleers team that is fresh off a series win over the LSU Tigers. The Texas Tech Red Raiders, another national seed, have a daunting matchup with a TCU Horned Frogs team that beat SEC tournament champion the Texas A&M Aggies in the super regionals.

Here is a look at the schedule and picks for Bracket 2"s opening day, as well as Saturday"s results.

2016 College World Series Results and Schedule Oklahoma State vs. UC Santa Barbara 1-0 Oklahoma State Arizona vs. Miami 5-1 Arizona TCU vs. Texas Tech 3 p.m. Coastal Carolina vs. Florida 8 p.m.

NCAA.com

A full bracket, with the regional and super regional paths of each team, is available at NCAA.com.

TCU vs. Texas Tech

Texas Tech enters as the No. 5 national seed in the tournament, going 46-18 on the season.

However, its opponent and Big 12 counterpart has been the dominant program in the state of Texas. TCU has made a habit recently of playing in the College World Series, as D1Baseball.com"s Kendall Rogers noted:

Making this year"s trip more impressive is that the Horned Frogs beat the Aggies in College Station.

When TCU and Texas Tech met in the regular season, the Red Raiders won the series 2-1. TCU outscored Texas Tech 17-16, but 13 of TCU"s runs came in its win, as Texas Tech was able to win comfortablyin the remaining two contests.

TCU is playing excellently as of late. The Horned Frogs are also 14th nationally in team ERA, while Texas Tech is outside the top 50.

TCU has hit slightly better than the Red Raiders this year as well, ranking 27th in scoring to Texas Tech"s 30th.

Texas Tech may have won earlier this season, but TCU looks like a contender in this field. It already took down one of the game"s top teams in the last round, and the Horned Frogs will ride that momentum to a close win Sunday.

Coastal Carolina vs. Florida

Perhaps the most surprising outcome on the road to the College World Series was Coastal Carolina sweeping six-time national champion LSU in the super regional.

The Chanticleers scored 15 runs in two games to shock the Bayou Bengals, but that will be a much tougher task against Florida.

The Gators led the SEC in team ERA and had three pitchers (A.J. Puk, Dane Dunning and Logan Shore) drafted on Day 1 of the 2016 MLB draft. The team also shut out a strong Florida State Seminoles team twice in the super regionals to reach this stage.

Coastal Carolina averaged 7.5 runs per game, so it has had a formidable offense all season. Getting on base will be key for the Chanticleers, as GatorSports.com"s Kevin Brockway noted:

Florida is the wrong matchup for Coastal Carolina in this case, as the Gators are second in the country with a ratio of 3.96 strikeouts to one walk.

Pete Alonso and Buddy Reed, also Day 1 draft picks, can provide Florida enough run support to hold off Coastal Carolina, which will struggle against a dominant pitching staff.

Hurricanes get primetime treatment for College World Series opener

2010 College World Series Final-Carolina vs UCLA Game 2, 9th inning

After winning a pair of afternoon games to get to Omaha, the Hurricanes will get primetime treatment when they open play in the College World Series later this week.

A day after Miami clinched its second straight berth in Omaha with a 9-4 win over Boston College, the Hurricanes learned they are set to take the field at TD Ameritrade Park against Arizona on Saturday night with first pitch scheduled for 8 p.m.

The game will be broadcast on ESPN2.

Miami, which is making its 25th appearance in the College World Series, is the highest-seeded team on its side of the bracket which, along with Arizona, includes Oklahoma State and UC Santa Barbara.

The loser"s of Saturday"s two games will play Monday at 2 p.m., while the winners will face off against each other Monday at 7 p.m.

The Hurricanes, the national No. 3 seed, clinched a 50-win season Sunday with their emotionally-charged victory over Boston College.

Third baseman Edgar Michelangeli had a pair of home runs in the win, including a seventh-inning grand slam that resulted in much celebration and a near benches-clearing brawl when some Boston College players took offense to Michelangeli"s bat flip toward the Miami dugout and his trot around the bases.

Ultimately, though, no punches were thrown, no players were ejected and the Hurricanes went on to secure the win and a return trip to Omaha.

"I"m looking forward to going to Omaha," Hurricanes coach Jim Morris said after Sunday"s win. "For the rookies, you tell them what it"s like but when you walk through those doors and on the field, it"s an unbelievable feeling. I"m excited about that for them and the team."

Staff writer Shandel Richardson contributed to this report.

College World Series memories: Shock the World

Kate Morrison, WFAA Sports 2:22 p.m. CDT June 13, 2015

The College World Series is upon us, with the first four teams facing off Saturday, June 13th. To get an insight into what it's like to travel the road to Omaha, and make it there as an underdog, I spoke with current Frisco RoughRiders catcher Pat Cantwell, who was the starting catcher for the Stony Brook Seawolves in 2012. The Seawolves were the fourth-seed in their region that year, and won four elimination games to advance to the College World Series, adopting the slogan "Shock the World" along the way.

What was it like, getting to the college playoffs with Stony Brook?

'We were underdogs the whole year - coming from the northeast, no one really gave us a shot anyway, but if anything it made us closer and it probably helped us out. I wouldn't trade that experience for the world."

What was the best part of your journey to the College World Series?

"Probably winning at LSU, because we were such big underdogs. I tell people this all the time when people ask me about it - going to Omaha was great, we were the Cinderella story, everybody was cheering for us, but there's something different about being the underdog when nobody wants you to win, nobody expects you to win, and our guys came out and answered the call. It was just one of those things where everybody came together at the right time and we got hot. It was a pretty special two or three days."

Stony Brook faced top pitcher Kevin Gausman in the LSU super-regional. What was that like?

"He [Gausman] was the best pitcher in college baseball that year, he closed out game 1 - the game that we actually lost because of the rain delay, so he finished out that game and [started] in Game 2. He did what he's best at - used both sides of the plate, good offspeed, good changeup, good slider. We were fortunate enough to get a couple of big hits, couple of guys on, and a couple of runs, and our pitching staff and bullpen did a great job, our defense was - I think it was nationally ranked that year, top 10 in the country. We made all the plays that we needed to make and fortunately we came out on top against a great pitcher and better competitor."

What advice would you have for someone with a team that's made it to Omaha this year?

"My advice would be to enjoy it, but don't let it take away from your competitive edge. Guys go there and they fall in love with the city and the people, everybody's very welcoming and very nice to you, everybody knows you're a baseball player when you're walking around. Go and enjoy it but you have to be ready to play when the time comes, so don't lose that competitive edge, but it's an experience you'll remember for the rest of your life, so you've got to try to have some fun with it too."

Any last thoughts or favorite memories of the College World Series?

"I mean, just the city of Omaha itself. You know, it was real cool when we got there - all the streets where the hotels are are named after the teams that are there, that was awesome. Everywhere you went there was some type of memorabilia from each school that was playing that year. The field was amazing, we played the first year at the new ballpark, and that's a beautiful facility. It was just a great experience. Everything that that city does for this time of the year is amazing, and I wish everybody could experience it once in their life, but it's just one of those things that you have to see for yourself."

The College World Series begins today at 2:00 PM CT when the Arkansas Razorbacks face off against the Virginia Cavaliers (ESPN), and continues with Florida versus Miami (FL) at 7:00 PM CT (ESPN). TCU will kick off its campaign for the title against LSU on Sunday at 2:00 PM CT (ESPN), with Cal State Fullerton facing defending champions Vanderbilt at 7:00 PM CT (ESPN2) that night.
