Ben Carson referred to slaves as immigrants and people are outraged

CNN"s Angela Rye Reminds Ben Carson That "We Built This Joint for Free"

Ben Carson, dubbed "Low Energy" by now-President Donald J Trump in 2015, is the United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.

He gave a speech on Monday, somewhat of a debut in the role, in which he told agency employees to be can-do and to exercise as much of their brain as possible.

No, seriously.

He said:

You can"t overload [the brain]. Have you ever heard people say:"Don"t do that or you"ll overload your brain?"

You can"t overload the human brain. If you learned one new fact every second it would take you more than three million years to challenge the capacity of your brain. It can"t be done.

So, we need to concentrate a little less on what we can"t do and a little more on what we can do. After all this is America, this used to be known as the "can-do society", not the "what can you do for me society", but the "can-do society".

That"s what America is about.

A land of dreams and opportunity.

So far, so good. The brain tangent was a little weird, but he"s a neurosurgeon so we"ll get over it.

What he said next, however, has left people outraged.

There were other immigrants who came here in the bottom of slave ships, worked even longer, even harder for less.

But they too had a dream that one day their sons, daughters, grandsons, granddaughters, great grandsons, great granddaughters, might pursue prosperity and happiness in this land.

People have reacted angrily to the implication that slaves were remunerated in pay comparable to working conditions in the present, rather than victims of colonialist oppression, and that they were in some way pursuing prosperity, rather than being subjected to tyrannical conditions.

Also, immigrants are people who voluntarily move to a different country.

There was nothing voluntary about the forced trafficking of the slave trade.

carson also, during his speech, said of the 18th century United States of America...

People could do whatever they wanted as long as what you wanted to do didnt interfere with me and what I wanted to do.

... Apparently ignoring the experience of black people and Native Americans at this time in history.

Carson later clarified his comments in a statement:

Im proud of the courage and perseverance of Black Americans and their incomprehensible struggle from slavery to freedom. Im proud that our ancestors overcame the evil and repression that we know as slavery.

The slave narrative and immigrant narrative are two entirely different experiences. Slaves were ripped from their families and their homes and forced against their will after being sold into slavery by slave traders.

The Immigrants made the choice to come to America. They saw this country as a land of opportunity. In contrast, slaves were forced here against their will and lost all their opportunities. We continue to live with that legacy.

The two experiences should never be intertwined, nor forgotten, as we demand the necessary progress towards an America that"s inclusive and provides access to equal opportunity for all.

We should revel in the fact that although we got here through different routes, we have many things in common now that should unite us in our mission to have a land where there is liberty and justice for all.

Trump"s Cabinet Just Keeps Getting Worse

Ben Carson declines job in Trump White House

For a little while, anyway, here at the shebeen, we"re going to be keeping the ol" weather-eye on the Trumpian hiring hall, because it"s already been shown to be a repository of bad ideas and very strange specimens. For example, there is talk that Dr. Ben Carson will be named Secretary of Education, a cabinet department, you may remember, that every Republican presidential candidate for 20 years has said shouldn"t exist at all. Dr. Ben, of course, is a creationist with some interesting theories in the field of Egyptology.

More recently, Dr. Ben, crusader against the evils of "political correctness," has proposed that the federal government monitor the nation"s universities for evidence of ideas of which Dr. Ben does not approve. From WaPo:

Dr. Ben Carson, currently running in second for the Republican presidential nomination, told NBC"s Chuck Todd on Sunday that he supports a system under which the government would investigate allegations of "extreme bias" on college campuses. "The way that works," Carson explained, "is you invite the students at the universities to send in their complaints. And then you investigate." He later added, "It"s not a violation of the 1st Amendment, because all I"m saying is taxpayer funding should not be used for propaganda. It shouldn"t be."

There also is talk that the Department of Homeland Security will be entrusted to Sheriff David Clarke of Milwaukee, who already has said that the outbreak of protests against the election of Donald Trump is overdue to be crushed. It"s possible that Clarke has muted his ravinerrhetoric because he"s preoccupied with finding out how an inmate died of thirst, in 2016, in his jail.

More, I am sure, to follow.

Ted Cruz and Ben Carson Held a Secret Meeting Inside a Closet

Ben Carson Is Against Free College But For Free Gun Classes

Ted Cruz and Ben Carson, two adult males who are running for president of the United States of America, havent been getting along very well lately. Carson has, of late, been accusing Cruz of dirty tricks on the campaign trail, including, but not limited to, telling supporters that Carson had dropped out of the race when he hadnt. Cruz, for his part, has blamed the misunderstanding on CNN, who reported that Carson had returned to Florida during the Iowa caucus to pick up some fresh clothes, an act that Cruz claims led him to believe Carson was, in fact, returning to the Sunshine State to announce his removal from the race rather than to briefly weep into his pile of clean laundry. Carson replied by suggesting that Cruz fire his campaign staffers. Cruz has not done this.

Likely recognizing that this ongoing and patently insane argument would likely alienate voters on both sides, Cruz and Carson did what grown men do when faced with conflict: they held a secret meeting inside of a closet.

The Daily Beast reports that on Thursday night in South Carolina, ahead of the Conservative Review convention, Cruz and Carson huddled inside a storage closet so that they might work out their issues. The arch nemeses selected the storage closet because it was neutral ground, as are all storage closets, where conventional laws do not apply. The meeting lasted for nearly 25 minutes, with a Secret Service detail standing outside, at one point informing a Republican operative, Yeah, theyre in that closet.

The meeting did not go well, Carson communication strategist Jason Osborne told The Daily Beast.

Not only did the closet convention end with Carson concluding that the two would have to agree to disagreethe familiar death knell of once-happy couples across Americabut it bumped into Carsons speaking time at the convention, meaning that somehow, Cruz managed to completely screw Carson over yet again, this time under the guise of reconciliation. Moreover, Carson agreed to meet with Cruz only for five minutes, and only if their tiny ttette were to remain off the record. Which it clearly hasnt.

And why, pray tell, is this Meeting of the Midnight Society now public knowledge? Because Ted Cruz, Carsons campaign alleges, immediately told the media about the secret meeting in an ill-conceived attempt to look like a good guy. We werent going to comment to the press on it, but it seems pretty clear that the other party involved had a different agenda, Osborne said. How else could we perceive that to be?

Later that evening, after Carson spoke at the convention, he ran into Cruz again in the hallway and, in a bizarre twist, Cruz didnt even look at Carson, according to the latters campaign. There was a political play there and it didnt work for them, a Republican operative close to the campaign told The Daily Beast. The meeting didnt go as well as Cruz wanted it to go. Carson had a smile on his face and was looking right at him.

But Ted Cruz would forever denounce Plants vs. Zombies before he admitted to the media that the meeting was anything less than a raging success. When asked how the meeting went, Rick Tyler, a spokesman for Cruzs campaign, told The Daily Beast, Yes, they had a good visit.

We Were Very Confused By Ben Carson"s Weird Answers During The GOP Debate

Countdown To Iowa - Dr Ben Carson On Hannity

Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson gave some bizarre answers during Thursday"s GOP debate, the final chance for candidates to make their pitch to voters before next week"s Iowa caucuses.

Responding to a question about Russia, Carson -- not known for foreign policy prowess -- delivered an indecipherable answer involving, among other things, horses and oil.

Putin is a one-horse, uh, country. Oil and energy, he said.

What?

He also named some Baltic countries and may have threatened to invade them, but it was difficult to tell.

Several times during the evening, Carson looked like he was waking from a deep sleep when the moderators called on him.

In his closing statement, Carson took a non-traditional approach. Deviating from the usual stump speech conclusion, he decided to recite the preamble to the Constitution.

We the People of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

"Folks, it"s not too late," he concluded. "Enough said."

Unfortunately for Carson, he flubbed it a little, saying "securing the benefits" instead ofsecure the blessings."

If he wanted to jazz it up a bit, he could have performedthe song from Schoolhouse Rock.

Good try, Ben!

Ben Carson Responds to Anti-Christians in the Most Faith Inspiring Way

Dr Ben Carson Takes Questions at CLP 1/18/16

Despite a rather large field of GOP presidential candidates, few have made their faith a cornerstone of their campaign like Dr. Ben Carson has.

While on the campaign trail, Dr. Ben Carson has made it clear that he isnt afraid to talk openly about his faith and wont shy away from challenging those that want to rid America of their Christian history.

Earlier today, Dr. Carson issued a challenge to Americans, urging them to use Facebook and change their profile picture to include the words, In G*d We Trust.

Regardless of how you feel about Dr. Carsons presidential bid, it is refreshing to see a politician courageously share his faith during a time in which Christianity is under fireas clearly evident by some of the responses below:

Do you support keeping In G*d We Trust as a fundamental part of how we govern America? Take Dr. Ben Carsons challenge and spread the word!
