Risk-taker Mnuchin poised for top Treasury job

Trump taps Steven Mnuchin as treasury secretary; strikes deal with Carrier

Steven Mnuchin, a hedge fund manager and former Goldman Sachs executive, is President-elect Donald Trump"s choice for Treasury secretary, a source told USA TODAY. Here is what we know about the 53-year-old. USA TODAY NETWORK

From buying a failed bank during the U.S. financial crisis to producing major movies and serving as national finance chairman for Donald Trump"s presidential campaign, Steven Mnuchin has a recordof winning risky bets.

Now the former Wall Streetbankeris poised for what could be his biggest challenge yet: Trump"s nominee for U.S. Treasury secretary.

Trump is expected to officially name Mnuchin, 53, as his choice for the nation"s top financialpolicy job as soon as Wednesday,a source close to Trump"s transition team told USA TODAY Tuesday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because officials were not authorized to speak publicly about selections.

To associates and friends who were surprised when he accepted Trump"s invitation to serve as lead campaign fundraiser after the New York presidential primary, Mnuchin offered a potentially prescient explanation.

Nobodys going to be like, Well, why did he do this? if I end up in the administration," he told Bloomberg Businessweek in August.

The news that Mnuchin is Trump"s pick came as reports swirled that Trump would nominate billionaire Wilbur Ross, also considered a risk taker, to serve as Commerce secretary.Ross, 79, made a career out of buying ailing companies in sometimes troubled sectors on the cheap, restructuring them and then selling them for billions of dollars.Ross, too, could be announced as early as Wednesday, the source close to the transition team said.

Trump has praised Mnuchin, who with the Republican National Committee helped raise tens of millions of dollars for the billionaire businessman"s winning campaign over Hillary Clinton. However, they weren"t always the best of friends.

In a 2008 lawsuit, Trump targeted one of Mnuchin"s companies in a lawsuit that alleged Deutsche Bank and other investors improperly balked at extendingmultimillion-dollar construction loans on the Trump International Hotel and Tower in Chicago. The case was ultimately settled.

Mnuchin, a twice-married father of three, is a Yale College graduate who followed his father to renowned U.S. investment bank Goldman Sachs. He started at the financial powerhouse in the 1980s and spent 17 years there, amassing a fortuneand becoming an executive vice presidentof the New York City-based companybefore his2003 departure.

His next stop was ESL International, the hedge fund founded by Edward Lampert, one of Mnuchin"s Yale roommates and another Goldman alumnus who is now the CEO and chairman of Sears Holdings. Lampert tapped him for a board seat on Sears Holdings-owned retail chainKmart in 2003. However, Mnuchin left soon afterward to become chief executive of SFM Capital Managment, a fund backed byinternational financier and investor George Soros.

Mnuchin"s SFM tenurewas similarlybrief. In 2004, he co-founded private hedge fund Dune Capital Management with Daniel Neidich, another former Goldman executive. The fund invested in equities andreal estate including some Trump projects.

Additionally, the fund invested in the U.S. movie industry. Starting in 2006, Mnuchin reacheda three-year deal in which an entity called Dune Entertainment agreed toinvest $500 million in a string of 20th Century Fox movies, according to multiple media reports.

The transaction launched a deeper Mnuchin diveintoentertainment investments and co-producing that ultimately included the Hollywood blockbuster success Avatar, The X-Men franchise, American Sniper, Gravity and The Lego Movie. Those films scored box office wins. Yetother movies that involved Mnuchin, such as Our Brand is Crisis, a fictional account of American campaign strategists involved in a Bolivian election, flopped.

In 2013, Mnuchin, filmmaker Brett Ratner and Australian businessman James Packer joined in anentity called RatPac-Dune Entertainment that agreed to $300 million in co-financing for as many as 75 films by Warner Bros. Pictures, according to the movie company andmediareports.

The following year, Mnuchin partnered with Ryan Kavanaugh and an investment group to buy debt and an equity stake in Kavanaugh"s Relativity Media. He also took a seat on the Relativity board of directors, becoming the company"s non-executive chairman.

"Steven has been a trusted adviser for years, and I personally recruited him to join our board," Kavanaugh said in a statement at the time. "He brings an unrivaled perspective on the ever-increasing value of content in Hollywood and Wall Street."

The move also ended up snarlingMnuchin in controversy.

Five years before taking the Relativity post, heled an investor group thatbought California-based IndyMac Bank, which had collapsed in a more than $7 billion implosion during the financial crisis. The investor group, which paid the FDIC roughly $1.55 billion to take the bank off the FDIC"s hands, was backed by Soros, hedge fund managerJohn Paulson, computer manufacturerMichael Dell, private equity investorChristopher Flowersand others.

IndyMac became OneWest Bank, with Mnuchin as its chairman. The deal drew criticismbecause it was finalizedbefore FDIC Chair Sheila Bair managed to institute a change that would requireprivate equity buyers like the Mnuchin-led group to maintain a10% leverage ratio at newly-resurrected banks and hold the investments for at least three years.

Bair, now the president of Washington College, declined to comment for this story. However, recounting the IndyMac collapse and sale in Bull By the Horns, her 2012 book about her FDIC tenure, Bair characterized the regulator as boxed in.

"The reality is that those who are brave enough to buy distressed companies in a down market whether banks or any other type of company expect to make a return commensurate with the risks they are taking," wrote Bair."The FDIC, as seller, had no good options."

New criticism and lawsuits came after Relativity Media sought federal bankruptcy court protection in July 2015. By then, Mnuchin had left the movie company"s board. And he was weeks away from selling OneWest Bank to CIT Group ata price that produceda hefty profit for himand fellow investors$3.4 billion in cash and stock, more than doublingtheirinvestment.

One of Relativity Media"s creditors, RKA Film Financing, took a cynical view of Mnuchin"s dual involvement with the movie company and the bank which was also owed millionsby Relativity.

In a 2016 New York Supreme Court lawsuit, RKA said Relativity"s collapse "amounted to a classic Ponzi scheme," and labeled its CEO Kavanaugh "a con man."

Mnuchin had held "a unique position," the lawsuit alleged, "affording him knowledge of both Relativity"s precarious financial position and the ability to ensure certain creditors namely OneWest Bank were able to siphon away funds that had been commingled" with RKA"s investments.

The lawsuit also charged that OneWest swept approximately $50 million from Relativity"s bank accounts before the collapse.

A bankruptcy court declaration by Timothy Coleman, a Blackstone expert who worked with Relativity on restructuring plans, said the OneWest transfers "further strained" the movie company"s "already problematic liquidity situation," and also forced postponement of some film projects.

The movies included Masterminds, which featuresZach Galifianakis, Kristen Wiig and other actors in a comedy based on an actual bank robbery. The film ultimately opened on Sept. 30 this year.

A Mnuchin court filing called his inclusion in RKA"s lawsuit"not just baseless, but sanctionable." He moved to throw out the case, as did Kavanaugh.Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Charles Ramos dismissed the lawsuit in an October decision that left the door open for the complaint to be updatedand refiled.

Benjamin Naftalis, an attorney for RKA, said the company "plans to file an amended complaint that will continue to include Mr. Mnuchin."

Though Mnuchin is best known publicly for his business dealings, he and his family also became known as some of the thousands ofinvestors caught up in the aftermath of Bernard Madoff"s notoriousPonzi scheme.

More than $3 million that Mnuchin and his brotherinherited from their deceased mother"s estate represented fictitious profits from Madoff"s estimated $20 billionscam, court-appointed trustee Irving Picard alleged in a 2010 bankruptcy court filing. But a court decision said the family"s withdrawals, and similar Madoff payouts to otherinvestors, had occurred more than two years before the scheme collapsed.

As a result, the moneycould not legally be recovered to help repay the disgraced financier"s less fortunate customers, the court ruled.

Although Mnuchin so far has emerged relatively unscathed from several court challenges, a new federal complaint filed after Trump"s win potentially could become a factor in Senate confirmation hearings for the Treasury post.

OneWest was criticized bysome housing advocates over a wave of foreclosures filed amidthe financial crisis.

Additionally, the bank, its successor, CIT Bank, and CIT Group were targeted this month with a new federal complaint that alleged they engaged in redlining and other discrimination against minorities. Two groups that advocate for fair housing and equal access to credit filed the complaint with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

"Our analysis of OneWest suggests the bank has no significant branch presence in communities of color, and not surprisingly, its home loans to borrowers and communities of color are low in absolute terms, low compared to its peer banks, and low when compared to what one would expect given the size of theAsian-American, African-American and Latino populations in California," said Kevin Stein, a deputy director forthe California Reinvestment Coalition, one of the groups that filed the complaint.

In response, CIT Group said it is"committed to fair lending and works hard to meet the credit needs of all communities and neighborhoods we serve."

Mnuchin did not respond to USA TODAY interview requests submitted to a company spokesman. However, Trump"s presidential transition staff provided a statement in which former OneWest chief executive Joseph Otting said the bank "remained committed to fair lending and meeting the credit needs of all borrowers in its communities, including those in distress."

Steinsaid the allegations submitted to HUD should be examined during Mnuchin"s expected confirmation hearings.

"It was not our intent in filing the case. But it should be considered," said Stein. "The American people would want a Treasury secretary who understands the lives of ordinary people and how they interact with major financial institutions."

Morning Update: Cubs sign Jon Jay; Blackhawks win in shootout

John Jay - Advertencia - Prod. By Nelly "El Arma Secreta" (Official Video)

Vinnie Hinostroza remembers playing hockey against good friend and (now) teammate Ryan Hartman, starting when they were seven years old.

He was one of the toughest kids in the area to play against, Hinostroza said. You never wanted to play against him, even when there wasnt checking.

So basically, Hartman has always played this energy-driven, sandpaper game. It just so happens that his game is a lot like former Blackhawks forward Andrew Shaws. So when Shaw was traded, the inevitable questions arose. Who was going to take Shaws place in the lineup? Who was going to bring Shaws agitation? Who was going to bring Shaws net-front presence? It was all about someone being the next Shaw.

While Hartman has replaced Shaw in some aspects, he is not, nor was he ever, trying to be Shaw. And so far this season Hartmans been playing his game pretty well and creating his own identity with the Blackhawks.

So maybe its time for us to give Hartman credit for being a good player in his own right, and not a guy trying to be another guy.

Andrew came into the league and built his own path and became the player he is by his own play and his own game, Hartman said. Im just looking to do the same thing.

Hartman has given a boost to the Blackhawks, and hes currently on a line with Marian Hossa and Hinostroza. He was especially good on the Blackhawks Circus Trip, during which he had three goals in seven games including the game winner against Anaheim on Friday. Hes been agitating. Hes been aggressive. So far hes also done all that while staying on the right side of the discipline line.In 19 games this season, Hartman has just two penalty minutes.

[SHOP:Gear up, Blackhawks fans!]

Hinostroza said Hartmans succeeding with his own game.

Thats always been his identity. Hes not trying to be someone else, Hinostroza said. So its important he sticks to that and people will really start seeing how he plays. Hopefully he can keep it up.

Much like several other rookies, Hartman is taking advantage of an opportunity. Another offseason purge and another tight salary-cap situation opened the door for some of the Blackhawks prospects. Hartman is especially noticeable against the Blackhawks more physical opponents.

I think hes always had a little edge to his game that he needs to bring every shift, coach Joel Quenneville said. You notice him. Hes abrasive in the puck area, he goes to the hard areas, comes up with loose pucks and can make a play in tight areas, which is his game. Physicality you look at our lineup, guys who can enhance our team physically in any way, we dont mind that. He brings that element that we appreciate.

Hes also brought offense, good for a team that needs more secondary scoring. So whats been working for him?

Its a mix of a lot. Finding chemistry with line mates, with other players, a little bit of puck-luck too. Pucks have come onto my stick in good areas at times. Weve been getting some wins, too, which helps, Hartman said. Its a good thing Ive been able to score. Thereve been a few posts and other chances, a couple of open nets I shouldve scored on, too. But hopefully I can continue helping out on the scoresheet.

Hartman is here because the Blackhawks had players to replace, including Shaw. But he should be known for his own game, for his own contributions.

Im just coming along game by game, Hartman said. [Im] playing the way Ive always played and just trying to build a career from there.

Trump looks to Tom Price, Seema Verma to overhaul health care

dil to hai dil by Seema Verma

President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday named a vociferous Obamacare critic and an Indiana policy consultant to help him overhaul the healthcare system.

Republican Rep. Tom Price, an orthopedic surgeon from Georgia, will be Trump"s Health and Human Services secretary, and consultant Seema Verma will lead the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, a powerful agency that oversees government health programs and insurance standards.

Trump cast Price and Verma as a "dream team" to help him once he takes office on Jan. 20 with his campaign pledge to repeal Obamacare, President Barack Obama"s signature health law formally known as the Affordable Care Act.

Of Price, Trump said in a statement: "He is exceptionally qualified to shepherd our commitment to repeal and replace Obamacare and bring affordable and accessible healthcare to every American."

Price said there was much work to be done "to ensure we have a healthcare system that works for patients, families, and doctors" based on "sensible rules to protect the well-being of the country while embracing its innovative spirit."

The 2010 Obamacare law triggered a long and bitter political battle between the White House and congressional Republicans, who said it created unwarranted government intervention in personal healthcare and private industry.

Trump has said he will replace Obamacare with a plan to give states more control over the Medicaid health plan for the poor and allow insurers to sell plans nationally.

Both positions require Senate confirmation, and the Trump administration will need congressional approval to repeal and replace the health law.

Price, an early Trump supporter from the House of Representatives, is chairman of the budget committee. He has long championed a plan of tax credits, expanded health savings accounts and lawsuit reforms to replace Obamacare.

Verma worked with Vice President-elect Mike Pence, the governor of Indiana, on a compromise to expand Medicaid coverage for the state"s poor with federal funding.

The Indiana program requires beneficiaries to make monthly contributions to health savings accounts.

Trump said Verma had decades of experience advising on Medicare and Medicaid policy and helping states navigate complicated healthcare systems.

"Together, Chairman Price and Seema Verma are the dream team that will transform our healthcare system for the benefit of all Americans," he said.

Price campaigned with Trump because he promised to overhaul Obamacare. However, Trump"s position on the health insurance program appeared to soften after he met Obama following the hard-fought Nov. 8 election.

Obama has acknowledged the law could use improvements but has credited Obamacare with cutting the number of uninsured Americans from 49 million in 2010 to 29 million in 2015. Much of that drop is due to the law"s provision allowing states to expand Medicaid.

Trump said he would consider keeping provisions in the law that let parents keep adult children up to age 26 on insurance policies and bar insurers from denying coverage to people with pre-existing conditions.

Price and Verma are two of about 70 people with whom Trump has met as he looks to shape his White House and Cabinet team.

Trump is expected to reveal an additional Cabinet pick on Tuesday while continuing to consider his options for the three biggest positions - secretaries of state, defense and Treasury.

Trump saw retired Gen. David Petraeus, a potential candidate for the State Department or the Pentagon, on Monday. On Tuesday, he is expected to meet with Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and later have dinner with Mitt Romney.

Romney, the 2012 Republican presidential nominee, and Corker are in the running for secretary of state, along with former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

"Solace" Clip: Anthony Hopkins and Jeffrey Dean Morgan Are on the Trail of a Serial Killer (Exclusive)

Halle Berry & Jeffrey Dean Morgan Talk Letterman, Selfies

Twenty-five years after he first terrified audiences as Chianti-loving serial killer Hannibal Lecter in Jonathan Demmes The Silence of the Lambs, Anthony Hopkins will assume the role of an investigator on the trail of a mysterious murderer in Solace, an upcoming thriller with acast that also includes Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Abbie Cornish, and Colin Farrell. However, Hopkinss character isnt just an ordinary detective rather, hes a man with psychic abilities, and in an exclusive new clip from the film, his powers givehim immediate insights into the case.

In director Afonso Poyarts film, Hopkinss protagonist is brought back into the police-work fold by his former student (Morgan), whos now an FBI agent. In the scene above, he receives a briefing on the case fromthe investigators (including one played by Cornish), who show himcrime-scene photos of the killers many victims, all of whom have been killed by a stab wound to the base of their skulls. While he listens to thegruesome details, Hopkins is struck withvisions of one victim, a young boy, dead on a swing, his ice cream cone dropped on the ground images that haunt the elder sleuth, who tells Morgan that its best if they start their investigation at the beginning.

Considering that the films headliners Hopkins, Farrell, and Morgan are all currently starring in separate, prominent hits of their own (HBOs Westworld, Warner Bros Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and AMCs The Walking Dead, respectively), Solace will aim to use star power to leave its own high-profile mark at the box office when it debuts in theaters on Dec. 16.

Sherri Papini was branded and her hair was cut off to "wear her down," Shasta County sheriff says

Sherri Papini Abduction | Sheriff Confirms Husband"s Chilling Details

The abductors of Redding mother Sherri Papini may have branded her and cut off her hair while holding her captive to send a message and humiliate her, Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenko told Good Morning America on Wednesday.

I would think that was some sort of either an exertion of power and control and/or maybe some type of message that the brand contained, Bosenko said. It is not a symbol, but it was a message.

Bosenko declined to elaborate on the brands appearance. Papinis blond hair was cut, Bosenko said, because her captor or captors were very sick and may have wanted to not only cut it off not to change her physical appearance but also as to humiliate to wear her down.

Papini was found on the side of a road beaten, chained, with a bag over her head and weighing only 87 pounds Thanksgiving morning, her husband said in a statement released Tuesday.

"Nothing could have prepared me for what I was about to see upon my arrival at the hospital, nor the details of the true h**l I was about to hear," Keith Papini wrote. "My first sight was my wife in a hospital bed, her face covered in bruises ranging from yellow to black because of repeated beatings, the bridge of her nose broken."

In the statement to Good Morning America, the husband also rejected Internet speculation that Sherri was not actually kidnapped.

"We are not going to allow those people to take away our spirit, love, or rejoice in our girl found alive and home where she belongs," he wrote. "I understand people want the story, pictures, proof that this was not some sort of hoax, plan to gain money, or some fabricated race war. I do not see a purpose in addressing each preposterous lie."

Authorities investigating the case have also said they have no reason to disbelieve her story.

Detectives were delving into the victims past as they tried to piece together details of the bizarre episode.

The 34-year-old woman was found bound by restraints along Interstate 5 in Yolo County. Officials were called about 4:30 a.m. after Papini flagged down a motorist. The mother of two was treated for injuries and reunited with her husband.

Officials said they were not aware of a motive for the apparent kidnapping. Bosenko also said it was not clear whether Papini knew her abductors.

Before Papini was found, police had filed about 20 search warrants in court related to the investigation. Many were filed under seal, the Sacramento Bee reported. ABC reported that detectives were also looking through Papinis computer records, investigating past relationships and seeking video surveillance camera footage that might offer clues.

Papini disappeared Nov. 2 while she was out for a jog in the small town of Mountain Gate in Shasta County.

Her husband reported her missing after he came home from work and found that she hadnt picked up their children from daycare. Her cellphone and headphones were found near where she had last been seen, about a mile from her home, investigators said.

Her disappearance made national news, and the community launched an aggressive manhunt to find her. Her story was shared on social media and volunteer searches were launched.

Leaner and meaner: US shale greater threat to OPEC after oil price war

Oil prices surge worldwide as OPEC hashes out a deal to cut production | Manorama News

In a corner of the prolific Bakken shale play in North Dakota, oil companies can now pump crude at a price almost as low as that enjoyed by OPEC giants Iran and Iraq.

Until a few years ago it was unprofitable to produce oil from shale in the United States. The steep slide in costs could encourage more U.S. shale output if OPEC members cut supplies, undermining the producer group"s ability to boost prices. OPEC ministers meet Wednesday to weigh output cuts to end a two-year glut that has pressured global oil prices.

In shale fields from Texas to North Dakota, production costs have roughly halved since 2014, when Saudi Arabia signaled an output free-for-all in an attempt to drive higher-cost shale producers out of the market.

Rather than killing the U.S. shale industry, the ensuing two-year price war made shale a stronger rival, even in the current low-price environment.

In Dunn County, North Dakota, there are around 2,000 square miles where the cost to produce Bakken shale is $15 a barrel and falling, according to Lynn Helms, head of the state"s Department of Mineral Resources.

"The success in Dunn County has been fantastic," said Ron Ness, president of the North Dakota Petroleum Council.

Dunn County"s cost is about the same as Iran"s, and a little higher than Iraq"s. Dunn County produces about 200,000 barrels of oil a day, about a fifth of daily production in the state.

It is North Dakota"s sweet spot because it boasts the lowest costs in the state, yet improved technology and drilling techniques have boosted efficiency for the whole state and the entire U.S. oil industry.

The breakeven cost per barrel, on average, to produce Bakken shale at the wellhead has fallen to $29.44 in 2016 from $59.03 in 2014, according to consultancy Rystad Energy. It added that in terms of wellhead prices, Bakken is the most competitive of major U.S. shale plays.

Wood Mackenzie said technology advances should further reduce breakeven points.

Landlocked Bakken producers still need a substantially higher international price than their breakeven cost to make a profit, since they pay more to transport crude to market than producers in most other U.S. regions.

International oil prices of $45 a barrel are enough for some Bakken producers to profit, Ness said, and $55 would encourage production growth.

Oil soars on OPEC hopes, dollar renews its surge

Saudi Arabia faces resistance to oil cuts, inside and outside OPEC
By Richard Leong | NEW YORK

NEW YORK Oil jumped on Wednesday as OPEC members clinched a deal to cut production, while upbeat U.S. economic data and comments from the U.S. Treasury Secretary nominee triggered a selloff in the bond market.

Higher crude prices bolstered shares of energy producers and stock prices around the world, with the Dow and S&P 500 hitting record highs.

An improving view on global growth, led by the United States on hopes of tax cuts and federal spending under a Trump administration, rekindled the dollar"s push toward a near 14-year peak.

"Everything seem to be coming together for more growth and risk appetite," said Larry Milstein, head of agency and government trading at R.W. Pressprich & Co. in New York.

Stronger investor confidence reduced safe-haven demand for gold, which was on track for its steepest monthly loss since mid-2013.

The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries has agreed its first output limiting deal in eight years in an effort to deal with global supply overhang, an OPEC source told Reuters as the debates continued in Vienna on the exact size of each member"s cuts.

Brent crude LCOc1 was last up $3.58, or 7.72 percent, at $49.96 a barrel. U.S. crude CLc1 was last up $3.28, or 7.25 percent, at $48.51 per barrel.

The rally in energy shares helped lift the Dow and S&P 500 to record intraday highs. The blue-chip U.S. stock indexes were also boosted by bank stocks on bets of loosening of regulation under Trump and a Republican-controlled Congress.

The Dow Jones industrial average .DJI rose 66.43 points, or 0.35 percent, to 19,188.03, the S&P 500 .SPX gained 2.69 points, or 0.12 percent, to 2,207.35 and the Nasdaq Composite .IXIC dropped 23.18 points, or 0.43 percent, to 5,356.73.

European stocks also advanced on a jump in oil companies .SXEP. But regional banks struggled after news Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS.L) failed a Bank of England stress test and Italian lenders fell before a referendum on the country"s political system on Sunday. [.EU]

The jump in oil prices, together with stronger-than-expected data on U.S. private job growth and regional manufacturing on Wednesday, ignited a wave of selling in bonds, pushing benchmark U.S. yields toward their highest levels since July 2015.

An aversion to own long-dated U.S. government bonds grew following comments from U.S. Treasury nominee Stevem Mnuchin who told CNBC television: "We"ll look at potentially extending maturity of the debt because eventually we"re going to have higher interest rates."

U.S. 10-year Treasury note yield US10YT=RR rose 10 basis points to 2.40 percent, a tad below last week"s 2.42 percent that was the highest since July 2015.

German 10-year Bund yield was 4 basis points higher at 0.26 percent, while Japanese 10-year yield edged up 1 basis point at 0.03 percent. DE10YT=RR JP10YT=RR

Rising U.S. yields and upbeat domestic data pushed the dollar index .DXY up 0.72 percent at 101.66, which was still short of the near 14-year high of 102.05 set last week.

Meanwhile, gold XAU= was on track for its biggest monthly decline since mid-2013, largely pressured by the bets of a series of U.S. interest rate hikes over the next year as U.S. growth seemed to accelerating.

Spot gold prices XAU= fell $16.81 or 1.41 percent, to $1,171.53 an ounce.

Kate Mara"s ex-boyfriend dented the Giants" Super Bowl trophy

Kate Mara Flirting with Craig Ferguson [HD]

If the Giants need a new kicker, they might want to try out Kate Maras ex.

The Hollywood starlet, appearing on Tuesday nights episode of Conan, related the time her former boyfriend fumbled the Lombardi Trophy at her family home the Maras own the Giants and put a boots worth of damage into the heralded hardware.

I was dating someone a long time ago who came to visit my parents not too long after the Giants won the Super Bowl, and a trophy had just arrived, Mara said. My parents, my mom specifically, was very excited about this. And she said, Would you like to see it? Would you like to hold it? Theyve sent white gloves that you put on before you can hold the trophy.

He was a very enthusiastic man and he put on the gloves and then he went to lift up the trophy, but he lifted it up from the base, which we didnt know wasnt connected to the trophy, and it fell. He was wearing these steel-toed boots, he was a pretty good soccer player and he kicked his foot up and caught the trophy with his boot and then caught it in his hands.

And he dented, just a tiny part.

Kate MaraPhoto: Getty Images

So who is the lucky lover turned accidental kicker? There are two viable suspects, though we know it came soon after a Giants championship and the suitor was English: Mara was linked to Daredevil star Charlie c*x in 2008, soon after Big Blues first title of recent vintage, and was dating actor Max Minghella when they triumphed again after the 2011 season.

The House of Cards ingenue is currently dating English actor Jamie Bell cant say she doesnt have a type of Billy Elliot and Fantastic Four fame.

Mara actually is football royalty two times over: Her mother comes from the Rooney family that owns the Steelers (hence sister Rooney Maras stage name). The two blue-blood franchises square off this Sunday in Pittsburgh, a once-every-four-years occurrence.

The good news is we always win, Mara said. Someones always happy.

Ripley"s animals are safe, aquarium closed Tuesday

GATLINBURG - Update at 1:35 p.m. Tuesday:Tennessee Ripley"s Aquarium of theSmokiesis intact, and officials say "first and foremost" they want to thank the first responders for "risking their lives to save our community."

"We would also like to thank our dedicated Aquarium team that stayed as late as possible before being forced to evacuate when fires approached the back of our building," Ryan DeSear, the operation"s regional manager, said. "We are grateful to have had the police escort our emergency team back into the Aquarium early this morning to check on the well-being of our animals. We have a team of Marine Biologists and Life Support Experts inside the Aquarium and are happy to report that the animals are safe."

Update at noon Tuesday: Tennessee Ripley"s Aquarium of the Smokies is intact, according to Gatlinburg officials.

Ripley"s posted to Facebook at 11:53 a.m. Tuesday that all animals at the aquarium are safe. All attractions at the aquarium will remain closed until the evacuation has lifted.

A team of marine biologists and life support experts are tending to the animals as of Tuesday afternoon, according to Ripley"s.

Here"s a list ofwhich structures are destroyed and which are intact.

Update at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday: Tennessee Ripley Attractions General Manager Ryan DeSearsaid he wasn"t sure if flames reached Ripley"s Aquarium of the Smokies.

DeSear said the aquarium"slive web camera was still active, and the building was still standing.

"As long as we have fuel in our generators, that aquarium can run on its own," DeSear said.

DeSearsaid a "raging fire" was about 50 yards away from the aquarium when workers were evacuated on Monday night.

Workers at the aquarium were evacuated mostly due to smoke, according to DeSear.

Original Story at 3 a.m. Tuesday: Fire has engulfed at least 30 structures in Gatlinburg late Monday, and one building many people are very concerned about is the Ripley"s Aquarium of the Smokies.

As of midnight Tuesday, Ryan DeSear, General Manager of the aquarium, told 10News that the building was still standing, that all workers were evacuated, but he is very concerned about the 10,518 animals left behind.

He was one of the last people out of the building at 7:45 p.m. Monday, and said he had to force many of the workers to leave because they didn"t want to leave the animals without help.

"They were force evacuated," DeSear said. "To them, every animal has a name. You don"t give that up"

Unfortunately, he said, "Nothing is more important than human life. Fish can be replaced. It sucks."

DeSear said as long as the building had power and didn"t catch fire, the animals should be safe. When everything is functioning normally, the animals can survive for 24 hours without human intervention. The clock would start ticking as soon as the power goes out.

Before he left, he did a final check of the animals, and said they were behaving normally. He took that as a good sign because animals have a special sense of danger, and they didn"t appear to be affected.

But DeSear and all of those who care for all of that aquatic and animal life at the aquarium are very anxious to get back to them.

"We need to be one of the first people allowed back in when it"s safe," he said. "I hope the people manning the checkpoint here our plea."

Trump taps Tom Price to lead HHS, Elaine Chao as Transportation secretary

Elaine Chao Nominated As Donald Trump"s Transportation Secretary | CNBC

NEW YORK President-elect Donald Trump made two Cabinet selections on Tuesday, choosing fierce Obamacare critic Georgia Rep. Tom Price to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, and Elaine Chao, who served in the Cabinet of George W. Bush, to serve as the secretary of the Department of Transportation.

Trump announced his choice of Price, while the selection of Chao, the wife of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, was confirmed by a person with knowledge of the decision but not authorized to speak publicly.

Price is exceptionally qualified to lead an effort to repeal and replace President Barack Obamas health care law, Trump said in a statement. The president-elects transition team did not immediately respond to questions about the congressmans past commitment to transform Medicare into a voucher-like system, a position at odds with Trumps repeated campaign promises not to cut the popular health care program that serves an estimated 57 million people.

Chairman Price, a renowned physician, has earned a reputation for being a tireless problem solver and the go-to expert on health care policy, making him the ideal choice to serve in this capacity, Trump said.

Chao led the Department of Labor for several years under Bush.

The president-elect appeared to still be torn over his choice for secretary of state. He summoned former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney to New York for dinner Tuesday night to discuss the post for a second time. He was also meeting with Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, who is getting new attention from Trumps team. On Monday, Trump spent an hour with retired Gen. David Petraeus, another contender.

Trumps decision to consider Romney for the powerful Cabinet post has sparked a public backlash from some of his closest aides and allies. Campaign manager Kellyanne Conway has warned that it would be a betrayal to Trump supporters if he selected Romney, who was a severe critic of the president-elect during the campaign.

Even as he weighed crucial Cabinet decisions, Trump appeared distracted by outside issues or eager to create distractions himself. He took to Twitter early Tuesday to declare that nobody should be allowed to burn the American flag. He warned that those who do should face perhaps loss of citizenship or year in jail!

Trump offered no context for his message. The Supreme Court has ruled that flag burning is protected by the First Amendment.

The president-elect spent the weekend tweeting his opposition to recount efforts in up to three states led by Green Party candidate Jill Stein and joined by Hillary Clintons team. He also falsely claimed that millions of people had voted illegally in the presidential election and provided no evidence to back up the charge.

Trump won praise from Republicans Tuesday for his pick of Price to serve as health and human services secretary. A six-term congressman and orthopedic surgeon, Price has been a leading critic of Obamas health care law. If confirmed by the Senate, he would be a leading figure in Republican efforts to repeal the measure.

Incoming Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said Price has proven to be far out of the mainstream of what Americans want for programs that help seniors, women, families and those with disabilities. His nomination, Schumer said, is akin to asking the fox to guard the henhouse.

Trumps team also announced Tuesday that Seema Verma has been chosen to be administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Transition aides said Trump was likely at least a few days away from a decision on secretary of state. Romney has support from Vice President-elect Mike Pence, who is heading the transition effort.

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, a loyal Trump ally, was initially seen as the leading contender to helm the State Department. But questions about his overseas business dealings, as well as his public campaigning for the job, have given Trump pause.

Trump is now said to be considering Giuliani to head the Homeland Security Department, according to those close to the transition process.

Peoples reported from Washington. AP writers Julie Pace and Ricardo Alonso-Zaldivar in Washington and Jonathan Lemire contributed to this report.

Americas|Brazil"s Chapecoense Soccer Team Devastated as Plane Crash Kills Dozens

A chartered plane carrying 81 people, including members of a Brazilian soccer team that had made a stunning climb up the ranks at home, crashed on the outskirts of Medelln, Colombia, killing nearly everyone onboard, the authorities said early Tuesday.

Colombias civilian aviation authority said that six people had survived the crash three players, two crew members and a journalist who was accompanying the team.

Members of the Chapecoense soccer team were traveling from Bolivia to play in the final of the Copa Sudamericana tournament when the plane crashed around 10 p.m. on Monday.

The aircraft was carrying 72 passengers and nine crew members, according to the Medelln airport. Search and rescue efforts were hampered by low visibility and difficulty in reaching the site.

The authorities said the plane had reported electrical problems as it flew near the towns of La Ceja and La Unin, in mountainous stretches around Medelln.

The crash crushed the hopes of one of the most impressive success stories in Brazilian soccer. In a national soccer league plagued by corruption scandals, mismanagement and lingering fury over the debacle of the national teams loss to Germany in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Chapecoense managed to achieve success on the field and financial stability.

It emerged as a scrappy upstart, challenging giants like Flamengo, Corinthians and other storied Brazilian clubs. In southern Brazil, the team was the pride of Chapec, a staid city of 210,000 known for its food processing plants and other agribusiness ventures.

This is a relatively small city, so everyone knows somebody who was on the plane, said Roberto Panarotta, 44, a professor of media studies in Chapec. He added that he lost a childhood friend in the crash, a member of the coaching staff.

Everybody is shocked, and nobody really knows how to react, he said. Nothing like this has ever happened here.

At least 21 journalists were reported to be onboard the plane, including reporters from Fox Latin America, the Globo television network and news organizations from southern Brazil. All but one died, the authorities said.

In a televised address, President Juan Manuel Santos of Colombia called the crash a tragedy that has the whole region in mourning. He said that of the six survivors, two were in critical condition, and that he had spoken with President Michel Temer of Brazil, offering any assistance needed.

The Colombian station Blu Radio, citing an interview it conducted with Alfredo Bocanegra, Colombias civil aviation director, said the plane had declared an emergency as it approached Medelln. The plane was given priority to land before air traffic controllers lost contact with it.

Federico Gutirrez, the mayor of Medelln, told Blu Radio that emergency support, with firefighters, ambulances and the hospital network, had been activated.

Members of Chapecoense were flying to Colombia for the first match of a two-leg final in the Copa Sudamericana, a second-tier championship for South American clubs. That match, against the Colombian team Atltico Nacional, was scheduled for Wednesday in Medelln. Chapecoense beat San Lorenzo the Argentine club that counts Pope Francis as a fan in the semifinals, and clubs like Atltico Junior of Colombia and Independiente of Argentina along the way.

The South American Football Confederation said that it had suspended the Copa Sudamericana and that the groups president was heading to Medelln.

As Brazilians awoke on Tuesday to reports about the crash, they expressed anguish, and Mr. Temer said on Twitter that there would be a three-day mourning period.

Before boarding, they said they were seeking to turn their dream into reality, Plnio David de Nes Filho, chairman of the board overseeing the Chapecoense club, told reporters. This morning, that dream is over.

The mayor of Chapec said he and other officials narrowly missed being on the plane. .

We were supposed to be on that flight, said the mayor, Luciano Buligon, adding that he and others had opted instead to take a commercial flight.

Others expressed relief about reports of survivors, including three players. Thank G*d Alan is in the hospital, in stable condition, Moa Ruschel, the wife of Alan Ruschel, a defender for Chapecoense who was among the survivors, said in a post on Instagram. We are praying for everyone who wasnt saved.

Chapecoense, founded in 1973, returned to the top tier of Brazilian soccer in 2014 after a 35-year absence. The two-legged fixture with Atltico Nacional in the final of the Copa Sudamericana had been described as the biggest in the teams history.

Chapecoenses rise from the countrys fourth division where it played as recently as 2009 has been described as a Cinderella story.

The club has established a reputation for long-term thinking and financial prudence, a rarity in the chaotic world of Brazilian soccer, and its progress to the final of the Copa Sudamericana put it in position to become the first team from the country to contest a continental trophy since 2013.

Conmebol, the governing body of South American soccer, issued a statement to say that all of the federations activities would be suspended until further notice. A number of teams in Brazil canceled events; Barcelona said it would hold a moment of silence before training on Tuesday; and clubs from across the world, including Manchester City and AC Milan, shared their condolences.

Romrio de Souza Faria, a former striker for the Brazilian national team, expressed his solidarity with the friends and families of the players, journalists, technical staff and flight crew who died in the crash.

G*d please help all those who were onboard the plane, Alexandre Pato, who plays in Spain and has been a member of Brazils national team, wrote on Twitter.

The rise of Chapecoense: A Brazilian footballing fairytale turned to tragedy

Associação Chapecoense divulga vídeo onde o time aparece comemorando no vestiário

As left-back Dener bombed down the left flank, the 25-year-old journeyman looked up and surveyed his options in the middle.

San Lorenzo defenders stood off, and allowed the whipped cross, but the ex-Coritiba, Ituano and Caxias fullback had pitched it behind the two arriving Chapecoense forwards attacking the penalty box.

Yet somehow, the winger Ananias had read the situation and pivoted as he realised the centre was heading behind him. His marker, Argentina international left-back Emanuel Mas read it a second later, and slipped; as he did so, the Brazilian took a touch with his right, swivelled, and fired into the back of the net with his left, beating Sebastian Torrico down low.

In the stands, the 50 or so supporters who had travelled from Chapeco, in the southern state of Santa Catarina, cheered. They jumped, they hugged, they waved state flags deliriously. On the sideline, coach Caio Junior, a former striker with Gremio and Internacional, as well as Vitoria Guimaraes and Belenenses in Portugal, pumped his fists. On the bench, defensive midfielder Josimar - substituted minutes earlier - cried.

A side who average 7,000 at domestic league games had silenced the 40,000 Argentines in attendance. A vital away goal against one of Buenos Aires footballing powerhouses. When the second leg ended one week later, Ananias magic moment had proved decisive.

Arguably the greatest goal in the clubs history, it sent the Verdo to a first ever continental final, to face the reigning Copa Libertadores champions - Colombian giants Atletico Nacional.

The feeling remained that it wasnt meant to ever be like this. Now, tragically, the fairytale of Chape will go no further.

News that the chartered La Mia 146 flight carrying 81 passengers, including 22 members of the clubs first-team squad, crashed en route to Medellin broke on Tuesday morning.

Of the 81, 76 are believed to have died. Football is united in grief and CONMEBOL, the South American football federation, have suspended all football activity in the wake of the accident.

Were gathered at the stadium, welcoming people who are affected, people who love Chapecoense said club vice-president Ivan Tozzo. Its an unbelievable situation. The penny has yet to drop. Were just waiting, everyone putting our faith in G*d that things will go our way. The pain is hard to take."

The vicissitude was every bit as unlikely as the club"s rise through the Brazilian ranks, becoming a progressive club among the country"s mad-cap footballing landscape, after decades treading water below the surface.

Founded in 1973 by the merger of Atletico Chapecoense and Independente, it was hoped that the new club - Associao Chapecoense de Futebol to give them their full title - would represent Chapeco - just over 200,000 inhabitants - and be a symbol of pride for their small city. Just four years later, the club won its first title - the Santa Catarina State Championship - beating much-bigger, more established rivals Avai 1-0 in the final, thanks to a goal five minutes from time through substitute Jaime.

The following year, they competed for the first time in the Brazilian championship, holding their own. It was hoped that this was the start of them establishing themselves, challenging the Sao Paulo and Porto Alegre behemoths who ruled the game. It didnt work out as such.

The following year brought relegation from the top tier, and led to something of a wandering existence in the lower reaches of the Brazilian game. Among the convoluted structure of the Brazilian game, state titles were won in 1996, 2007, 2011.

But a modest club they struggled to compete with even the more modest clubs in Brazils second tier, let alone the likes of the countrys most historic, long-standing pillars such as Atletico Mineiro, Gremio, Flamengo, Gremio, Sao Paulo and Santos.

Attempts to improve and kick on were attempted during their 30-plus years in the wilderness, including in 2002, a change of name to Associao Chapecoense Kindermann/Mastervet, after partnering with the sports marketing company. It made little difference and they reverted to the original just four years later.

But in 2013, Chape returned. The previous year, they had clambered out of the third tier, promoted after reaching the semi-finals of the post-season knockout competition on the back of an 18-game league stage where they had finished third, conceding just 12 goals in the process. That had come four years after promotion from Serie D.

The aforementioned backbone, the solid defence, remained in their debut season in Serie B, as the Verdao shocked the country by making it back-to-back promotions. Gilmar Dal Pozzos side lost just six times - conceding just 31 goals in 38 games - to claim a place in Serie A and end their 35 year absence, finishing behind only champions Palmeiras (the five-time Brazilian kings), whom they beat at home and drew with in Sao Paulo.

At their modest long-time home, the Arena Conda and led by a new manager, Celso Rodrigues, the Verdao claimed safety on their first year back in the top division with a 15th place finish. Victory in 11 of their 38 games, plus 10 draws, helped them on their way to 43 points, five clear of the four relegated sides. It had been a struggle, but the form of on-loan striker Leandro fired them to safety, as the 22-year-old notched 10 goals - all in the final four months of the season.

That success ensured a place in the 2015 Copa Sudamericana - the sister competition to the Copa Libertadores (think Europa League to Champions League) - and doubling their workload. In the hostile arena that is Brazilian management, they twice changed manager during the calendar year, leaving Guto Ferreira to eventually lead them to another year in Serie A, with a 14th place finish.

On their first continental sojourn, they reached the quarter-finals, only to be beaten by Argentine giants River Plate 4-3 on aggregate. The expectation was that this, a meeting with Los Millonarios, Argentinas most honoured club at El Monumental, would be as good as it would get. This was akin to Malagas Champions League run in 2013, a small club, getting where they had no right and where they would never go again.

Except they did. And except, they improved. For while 2015 was a magnificent journey, the past nine months have seen only further improvement. While Ferreira may have left mid-season to join Bahia, the side didnt miss a step and under Caio Junior, in their third year in the top division, Chape have looked even more at home. With just one league game left, scheduled to be a home tie against Atletico Mineiro this weekend, they sit ninth their greatest ever league campaign.

And yet that isn"t even half the story given their continental adventure of 2016.

They claimed victory over fellow Brazilians Cuiaba (3-2 on aggregate) in the second round, before beating Argentine heavyweights Independiente - South America"s most successful club - on penalties in the round of 16 (following back-to-back 0-0 draws). A 3-0 home win over Colombian outfit Junior in the quarter-final second leg followed a 1-0 loss in Barranquilla, ensuring a place in the final four.

There they came up against another of Argentinas most mighty: San Lorenzo. After Martin Cauteruccio had opened the scoring in the first period for the hosts, Chape left Buenos Aires with a 1-1 draw in their pocket thanks to Ananias, before holding their own in the home leg to claim a place in the final with an away goals victory, courtesy of a 0-0 draw.

This was a footballing fairytale, likened to Fulhams 2010 UEFA Cup final run, or that of Spains provincial club Alaves in 2001.

Further back, its reminiscent of Aberdeens Cup Winners Cup success in 1983, where Sir Alex Ferguson"s side faced European kings Real Madrid in the final, emerging victorious.

Now, despite Atletico"s request to hand the title to Chape, the fairytale that was never meant to happen will remain unfinished.

"Life-long friends were on that flight," remarked Plinio David de Nas Filho, president of Chape"s guiding committee on Tuesday morning. "We lived in harmony, with great happiness. Before boarding the flight, they said they were going to turn their dreams into reality. The dream ended this morning."

A great tragedy, said Tozzo. A great tragedy in more ways than one.
