Once Upon a Time Bosses Answer Our Burning Questions About the "War" Coming to Storybrooke & the Show"s Future

Once Upon A Time 6x11 Emma & Old Hook in Wish Realm "Tougher Than The Rest" Season 6 Episode 11

Things are about to get interesting in Storybrooke.

As Once Upon a Time returned for the second half of season six, Emma (Jennifer Morrison) and Regina (Lana Parrilla) found their way home out of the wish land--thanks to an always-welcomeappearance from August (guest star Eion Bailey)--bringing with them the wish land"s version of Robin (Sean Maguire), which shouldn"t get weird at all. (Yeah, right.)

Once home, Emma had the showdown with the hooded figure that"s been plaguing her all season long, only she found the strengthto flip the script on Gideon (Giles Matthey), blasting him with her powers and putting up a good fight. Although, as Gold (Robert Carlyle) later told Belle (Emilie De Ravin), she just may have incited a war, given that Gideon"s plans include him becoming the Savior regardless of the costs.

Oh, and we finally learned how a chance encounter with August as a young runaway gave Emma her iconic last name, Swan! (He stopped her from burning the pages of fairy tales for warmth, rescuing The Ugly Duckling just in time.)

It was a lot to unpack, but luckily co-creators Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis were on hand to tackle our burning questions about where the show goes from here, how the much-talked about upcoming musical episode figures into things, and what it took to convince Colin O"Donoghue to step into that fat suit to bring the wish land"s version of Hook to hilarious life.

With all this talk of war coming to Storybrooke, just how bad are things going to get?Kitsis: Um, I think it"s going to be really bad.

Horowitz: I think there"s an intensity that"s about to overcome everything and it"s going to be not just be about the external conflicts of what"s going on with Gideon or whoever else they may be facing, but also internally as all the characters have to look inward and deal with their own issues in the face of great adversity.

We see Goldtell Belle that he doesn"t want Gideon to kill Emma, that we wants to spare him the same fate that"s befallen him. Can we trust him when he says that, given that he is Gold, after all?Kitsis: I think that in this case, what we do know is it"s like a gangster who wants his son to be a doctor. That"s how we approached it. Rumple is many things, but he does love his son. He does feel the guilt of what happened with Baelfire and I think he means it. I think that me may be unable to resist the dark magic, but he certainly doesn"t want to send his son on the same life. You always want whats better for your children. So, I believe him. But that doesn"t mean he won"t be tempted or have curveballs thrown in his way.

Gideon talks about his motivation not being out of pure evil, but instead needing to become the Savior to go save others. Can you talk about what that means?Kitsis: What I can tell you is that he hinted at wanting to free the realm of the Black Fairy. His motivations are going to become clearer in his origin story and the Black Fairy"s origin story, which is two flashbacks we"ll be doing this year. Gideon"s is episode 16 and the Black Fairy"s will be 19.

With all of this intensity coming to Storybrooke, how exactly does a musical fit into that? What can you talk about the plans for that?Horowitz: It"s interesting you should say that because we"ve been thinking about a musical for a long time, and we"ve actually been planning this one since last fall. What we wanted to do with a musical, one of the things that the bar we had to clear for ourselves was that we didn"t want it to be a standalone episode or something outside of the continuity. We wanted it to be an organic part of the season"s storytelling. And we found a way to do that which we"re really excited about. So all this intensity and stuff that going on in town, I think you"ll see, once we get to the musical, that it is nicely balanced by what"s happening in the musical. The storytelling in the musical is the key to all the different storylines going on.

Kitsis: Yeah, it"s not like a one-off, "Oh, it doesn"t matter."

What was the reaction like amongst the cast in approaching the musical episode?Kitsis: They all have musical backgrounds, so they were really excited. They"ve been very enthusiastic. It"s interesting. They really, really are excited. What we love is that the audience already knows how talented our cast is, but I don"t think they realize how well they can sing. So, it"s really fun for us to show off our fantastic cast.

I want to talk a little bit about Regina"s decision to bring the wish land"s version of Robin Hood back into Storybrooke. When you guys killed off Robin last season, was this idea already there to play with another version of the character?Horowitz: As with most of our ideas, when we get between seasons we do this planning for the upcoming season and a lot of these big ideas and big arcs grow out of that. So what usually happens at the end of the season is we take a few weeks when production is done to sit with the writers, we look back at what happened the previous year, we look ahead to what we want to have happen the next year, and we have a whole slew of ideas that we"ve had since the beginning that we want to find a place to touch on. I think that idea grew out of those discussions there and then we kind of seeded it in to what we"ve done this season. And you"ll see in the second half of the season how it comes into play and most importantly what it means for Regina.

This version of Robin, how does he handle adapting to Storybrooke and, in turn, how does Storybrooke adapt Robin Hood suddenly being back?Kitsis: I mean, exactly. People are like, "What is this?" We"ve dealt with large snow monsters and wraiths and dragons and fairies, but we"ve never had a bizarro version of someone else coming back. So, I think that Storybrooke is going to be wary, but I think more importantly, Regina"s friends and family are going to be wary because this is not the same Robin Hood and Regina has been trying very hard to remove the darkness from her and move forward with her life. This is definitely going to be a test of that.

I have to ask, when you told Colin that he was going to become that old, paunchy version of Hook, how did he take that?Horowitz: Colin was full-throttle for it. He is an incredible actor who will go any place you point him to and make it special.

Snow has been stuck asleep for so long. What can you tease about how this situation with her and Charming moves forward?Horowitz: Well, one, it seems like she"s been asleep longer than she has been because we"ve been off the air. But, yeah, it"s been a challenge. One of the big elements of the storytelling in the second half of the season is how do Snow and Charming deal with this new curse of being separated in a waythey"ve been separated before, but it"s always been by physical distance. Now, they"re separated in a way that"s almost even more cruel. How do they deal with that? And can they overcome it and how? Those are a lot of questions that get posed and dealt with as the season progresses.

There"s been a lot of talk about the future of the series past this season, with rumors floating about a possible reboot to the series as some storylines close. What would you say is the truth about how you"re approaching an upcoming additional season?Horowitz: I think that we"re approaching it in that there"s another chapter to the story that we want to tell, and hopefully we get the chance to tell it. Within the bounds of this season, there are many, many stories that we"ve been telling for a long time that may reach some kind of climax. But at the same respect, these are characters who have, to us, really rich history and vital lives yet to be explored that while we may shake things up in a big waywe"re hoping tothere"s a lot more we want to do if we"re lucky enough to get the chance to do it.

Once Upon a Time airs Sundays at 8 p.m. on ABC.

Once Upon a Time"s Characters Are In a Rut

ONCE UPON A TIME - 6X01 THE SAVIOUR REACTION

Share.

Same story, different season. By Terri Schwartz

Time is a flat circle, and it seems the characters in Storybrooke are stuck in it. As Once Upon a Time enters its sixth season, the premiere sees the same problems play out between the same people in slightly different deviations of versions we"ve seen before. People only fall back on their bad behavior so much; if they aren"t going to learn something from the mistakes they seemingly grew from in the past, it might be time to have them face something new entirely.

Spoilers for Once Upon a Time"s Season 6 premiere, "The Savior," continue below.

Over the past few seasons, Once Upon a Time has kept things fresh by bringing in new fairy tale/Disney faces to enliven the series. From Anna and Elsa to Peter Pan to Hades, the constant revolving door of splashy guest characters has oftentimes shifted the focus from steady development of the core Storybrooke crew to the arc of the moment.

We want to hear it.

But after letting that style of storytelling run its course, showrunners Adam Horowitz and Eddie Kitsis seem to be making a shift back to the way they did things in the early seasons of the series: namely, not splitting the season in half and telling two different story arcs around the midseason hiatus. The duo confirmed during a recent press Q&A that Season 6"s adventures in the Land of Untold stories will be something that stretches over the course of the whole year, instead of being wrapped up tidily in the midseason hiatus.

On paper this seems like a smart way to reinvigorate Once"s storytelling. Season 5 was split between Camelot and the Underworld, but the major throughline was Emma -- and then Hook -- becoming the Dark One. In Season 6, it seems like the real story will be whether Emma can change her unhappy Savior"s fate, and whether that takes place in Storybrooke or the Land of Untold Stories or elsewhere is of secondary importance. Spending 20-odd episodes on this one conflict means there"s an opportunity for real growth on the show.

The real issue is that many these characters are still making the same mistakes and bad decisions six seasons in that they were at the start. Some of these storylines echo heavily plotlines that occurred over the past few seasons, with Rumpelstiltskin and Belle literally following their own footsteps by recreating their Beauty and the Beast-inspired dance from the Season 4 premiere.

Rumple and Belle"s relationship drama is a big example of the "been there, done that" theme of the Season 6 premiere. These two love each other, but he can"t be better than the "best man he can be," and that"s not enough for her. He lies, she feels betrayed, maybe they rekindle their romance or maybe she keeps him at arm"s length -- either way, a happy ending always seems in sight but just out of reach.

It"s not easy to maintain conflict -- a necessary evil in storytelling -- in a seasons-long relationship, and it"s a problem many long-running TV shows run into. But Once Upon a Time has a habit of putting a new skin over the same story, and the Belle and Rumple tale is a prime example. Now the thing keeping Belle and Rumple apart is an adult version of their unborn son, who warns Belle of the same thing she"s been grappling with for seasons: don"t trust Rumpelstiltskin. He will disappoint you, he will lie to you, he will fail you.

The best thing for this relationship is to rip this band-aid off, one way or another. Make one of them change in a substantial way, or have them come to terms with the fact their relationship isn"t going to work and move on. Sometimes love isn"t enough, and that"s an OK story for Once Upon a Time to tell. Horowitz and Kitsis have long said their goal is to show the human behind some of the most iconic and beloved fairy tale creations, and seeing a couple know when to say "enough" is pretty darn human.

But Belle and Rumple aren"t the only two to be retreading familiar territory. Regina and Zelena have been at odds ever since the Wicked Witch was introduced, and for largely the same reasons. The two sisters finally came together in a lovely way in Season 5, realizing that true love can be familial as much as it can be romantic. The new season tossed that resolution to the side: Regina blames Zelena for the death of Robin, and doesn"t deny that she wanted to get rid of the part of her that is most similar to her darker sister. That sends Zelena into the arms of Regina"s severed half, the Evil Queen, to put her at odds with the good side of her sister once again. The baggage between these two is ripe dramatic material, but it"s material that"s been mined again and again and again to similar effect since the Wicked Witch was introduced in Season 3.

Once Upon a Time goes all the way back to Season 1 for the source of its new conflict between Emma and Hook, when she defers to lying to him about her hand tremor instead of just coming out with the truth -- something certain to have frustrating and familiar consequences for their relationship. Explaining Emma"s decision-making, Kitsis said, "It"s her character. The fun thing about six seasons, at least as writers, is you get to revert to that. When Emma has a problem, it reverts back to Season 1: wall goes up, I"ll figure it out myself. She can sit there and have these great scenes of hugging Henry and hugging her mom and telling Regina they"re buddies, and then all of the sudden when something comes up she reverts back."

The rationale for Emma"s tremors and darker storyline in Season 6 is that, after so many seasons of fighting bad guys and having her new friends knock down the walls she built up, all the things she had fought to keep at bay would rush in and cause new issues. It"s a smart direction to take the Savior in, but to do so at the expense of every lesson she learned about family and relationships over five years undercuts the point. Emma has lied to Hook in the past and she always puts things on her own shoulders. Each time she seems to learn her lesson, but it"s clear the storytelling doesn"t intend to have those lessons stick.

Got feedback on our player?

We want to hear it.

It"s the moments where Once Upon a Time does push its characters out of the cyclical cycles of their stories that the Season 6 premiere is the most rewarding. Regina is the character who has arguably grown the most over six years, and her scenes with Snow White highlight best how much has changed for them both. As much as Regina struggles with her own sister, her relationship with Snow White has evolved from viewing her the bane of her existence to Snow being one of the first people she turns to when she has a problem. Those hard-fought friendships are often the ones that mean the most in our lives, and seeing Once reflect that plays into the idea that these larger-than-life figures are just human.

Once Upon a Time is faced with the tough challenge of keeping the same fan-favorite relationships engaging year after year in new ways that also don"t irreparably change the dynamic of the show. But with the same storylines being told in different variations, it"s hard not to be frustrated by seeing characters start to travel down the path they just reached the end of not long before. Hopefully the next time they find resolution to these conflicts, it will prove to have a more lasting impact and allow them to journey somewhere new.

"Once Upon a Time" Season Six Shockers

Once Upon A Time 6x01 Emma Sees Her Future & End of Her Story "The Savior"

Sundays season six premiere of Once Upon a Time saw new characters and new revelations for current characters.

The show opened with a scene between two new characters. Aladdin was paid a visit by the carpet-riding Jafar. Jafar said to Aladdin, Do you remember when we first met? You were nothing but a common thief. But you had honor, despite what you did to me. The ironys delicious.

Mr. Gold met a man named Morpheus, who helped him to navigate Belles dream world.

Perhaps, the biggest revelations came from existing characters. Emma was haunted by violent images that turned out to be visions of the future. It was explained that she was seeing the way she will die and there was no way to escape it.

The episode ended with a shocking revelation that the Evil Queen had returned.
