Draymond Green, Klay Thompson back Steve Kerr"s use of marijuana

First Take - Klay Thompson Scores 60 points in 3 quarters in Warriors blowout win over Pacers

OAKLAND, Calif. -- In light of Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr admitting recently that he used marijuana for chronic back pain, some of his players had his back on Saturday.

Draymond Green and Klay Thompson discuss Steve Kerr"s medicinal marijuana admission.

Kerr says he tried pot for back pain

Ive never been a guy who has done it, period, Draymond Green said. So, I cant say that I know much about it, but from what I hear from whether its football guys, I think a lot of them do it because of all the pain that they go through.

And when you read Steves comments, it makes a lot of sense. When you look at something that comes from the earth, any vegetable that comes from the earth, they encourage you to eat it. So, I guess it does make a little sense as opposed to giving someone a manufactured pill. If something takes your pain away like some of these pills do, it cant be that good for you.

Kerr revealed in a podcast that he tried marijuana twice to help him recover from two back surgeries the past year and a half. He also stated that he hopes all professional sports leagues would allow for the usage of marijuana as a form of treating pain, as opposed to a prescription drug, like Vicodin.

But not recreation use, Klay Thompson said. That should not be of its use ever, but theres obviously a medicinal side to [marijuana] that people are finding out have benefits, especially people in really high pain.

Coaches are subject to one drug test per season during training camp, with different thresholds for what is considered a positive test. NBA players who test positive for recreational drugs such as marijuana are not disciplined until their third failure.

Green first saw the news of Kerrs comments on his cell phone.

But, of course, we live in a world where the first thing that pops on your phone is, Steve Kerr said he smoked weed twice because they want the headline. And then you read it, and its like, Man, this makes a lot of sense."

Green and Thompson applauded their coach for being brave enough to speak out on this issue. Now that this topic is front and center on the minds of the sporting world, Green is left wondering why marijuana isnt approved.

The only thing I can really think of is that its from the earth. Its grown from the earth, Green said. So, maybe it is better than a Vicodin, like [Kerr] said. ... It usually takes a guy like Steve to do something like that to where it even starts the conversation. And then you start the conservation, stuff is still at least three or four years out. Who knows?

Kobe Bryant calls Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson "stone-cold killers"

Every Three-Pointer from Klay Thompson"s Record Breaking Night

Kobe Bryant is widely recognized as the fiercest competitor of his generation, an on-court killer whose only focus was winning above all else.

In an interview with ESPN, when asked which players in today"s NBA have a Kobe-like instinct, Bryant named Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson specifically, and explained why he enjoys their particular brand of basketball.

"There"s several of them out there right now that approach the game extremely, extremely seriously," Bryant said. "I get a kick out of watching Golden State play, because they seem very unassuming. You know, Klay and Steph seem very calm and (like) nice guys. Those guys are stone-cold killers, man. They don"t care about what you think of them. They don"t care about if they make a game-winning shot or miss it. They"re out there to do their job, and they have a very strong sense of killer instinct."

This shouldn"t come as too much of a surprise. The Warriors are historically great, and they"re favored to win a second straight championship. Those things don"t happen unless you have players like Curry and Klay who are laser-focused on achieving their goals, and Bryant knows that better than perhaps anyone else.

Klay Thompson's teammates can't believe he scored 37 points in a single quarter

Golden State Warriors shooting guardKlay Thompson made NBA history on Friday night, scoring a record-breaking 37 points in a single quarter against the Sacramento Kings. Fans obviously could barely believe what was happening as they watched the score go from 60-60 to 97-73, but what about Thompsons teammates? It turns out they were equally in shock, judging from their postgame reactions, tweets and Instagram posts.

Draymond Green, who managed to sneak in a layup between Thompsons seemingly nonstop jump shots and three-pointers, compared Thompsons effort to the video game NBA 2K15. Or, well, at least he tried to.

You dont get that hot in 2K. Them video games are real now. And that wasnt real. You cant do that in a video game! Green said before pausing, laughing and adding, I dont understand what you all want me to say! Yall are making me look like I dont know how to talk to the media at all right now. I honestly dont know what to tell yall right now.

Stephen Curry took a more humorous approach on Instagram.

The photo is captioned: Still in shock! This guy @klaythompson was unreal tonight! 37! 37! 37! If hes not an All-Star next Thursday..

Harrison Barnes posted a video, showing the team dumping some celebratory cooler water on Thompson.

Here are a few other teammate reactions:

Thompson also had something to say.
