Melania Trump, Cruz hit trail as surrogates for Donald

What was Melania Trump like in Slovenia? - BBC News

Melania Trump and Ted Cruz both made their post-convention debut as Donald Trump surrogates on the campaign trail Thursday -- though the Texas senator and former primary contender did so without mentioning the GOP nominee by name at his initial appearance.

Cruz joined Republican vice presidential nominee Mike Pence on the campaign trail in Prole, Iowa, a month and a half after he posted a tepid endorsement of Trump on Facebook.

This election has been one wild ride, but the stakes in this election have never been higher, Cruz told the audience. He noted that maintaining GOP control of Congress and putting a Republican in the White House amounted to the whole enchilada.

Standing at a podium with a Trump-Pence logo, Cruz praised several Iowa Republicans, including Rep. Steve King and Sen. Charles Grassley, but did not name Trump.

Cruz did mention Trump at a later stop in Michigan, telling the crowd in Portage, "You oughta vote for Donald Trump and Mike Pence and Republicans up and down the ticket."

In Iowa and Michigan, Cruz delivered his pitch to the base, while Melania Trump made her first solo appearance in suburban Philadelphia, where Donald Trump is trailing Clinton.

He knows how to make real change. Make America great again is not just a slogan, she said, adding that as first lady she would be an advocate for women and children.

Despite her husbands reputation for frank, sometimes crude talk, the native of Slovenia focused on family issues saying that the culture has gotten too mean and rough.

Prior to her address, the Pennsylvania state Democratic Party sent out a copy of an old Michelle Obama speech that was labeled as an advanced copy of Melanias speech, a reference to allegations of plagiarism that emerged after her Republican National Convention speech.

Cruz and Melania Trump are the latest in a growing pool of surrogates campaigning for Trump, as Hillary Clinton deploys influential Democrats ranging from President Obama to Bernie Sanders to the trail.

Surrogates can be very helpful in the final days of the campaign when it is far more important to energize and excite voters than to persuade them, Republican campaign strategist Chris Jankowski told FoxNews.com.

I think it would have been wiser to have heard more from Ivanka and Melania all throughout September and October. This speech may have some impact ... but I am doubtful that it will have enough of an impact, Sarah Lenti, a Colorado-based Republican consultant, added.

In battleground states where the margins are narrowing, the surrogates are making the biggest showing.

Michigan, which has not voted for a Republican candidate for president since President George H. W. Bush in 1988, is such a case.

A Fox2/Mitchellpoll released on Wednesday showed Clintons lead in the Great Lakes state has narrowed to 3 percent.

The week began with Trump rallying on Monday, while Donald Trump Jr. arrived mid-week to make stops at Michigan State University and Grand Valley State University. Ivanka Trump appealed to suburban women voters during a Michigan Women in Business Roundtable event.

Not new to the role of surrogate, Obama fired up a Florida crowd with a feisty speech that went off-script as much as Trump.

This is the guy who spent 70 years -- his whole life -- born with a silver spoon, showing no respect for working people. Hes spent a lot of time with celebrities, Obama told the audience in Miami.

But Trump, the president said, does not hang out with working people unless theyre cleaning his room or mowing the fairways.

Youre going to make this guy your champion if youre a working person? he asked the crowd.

Melania Trump: Donald Trump"s lewd talk about women is "boy talk"

Melania Trump : My husband is kind, he cares about people

NEW YORK Melania Trump on Monday dismissed her husband"s sexually aggressive language as "boy talk," insisting his remarks do not reflect "the man I know."

Trump"s wife, in a series of media interviews, said she has accepted her husband"s apology and the couple is "moving on." The comments come more than a week after the release of a 2005 video in which Trump brags about kissing women and grabbing their genitals without their permission.

"I said to my husband that, you know, the language is inappropriate. It"s not acceptable. And I was surprised, because that is not the man that I know," she told CNN.

She suggested that Trump may not have known his microphone was on, calling it "kind of a boy talk" that "Access Hollywood" host Billy Bush was encouraging.

Mrs. Trump also said it is fair game for her husband to appear with women who have accused former President Bill Clinton of sexual assault, claiming the Democrats fired the first volley into the increasingly ugly war about the couples" private lives.

"They"re asking for it. They started. They started from the beginning of the campaign putting my picture from modeling days," she said in excerpts released by Fox News ahead of the interview"s broadcast. "That was my modeling days and I"m proud what I did. I worked very hard."

Melania Trump"s image was used in a negative ad campaign during the Republican primary, but there is no evidence that the Clintons were involved. At the time, Donald Trump accused former rival Ted Cruz of being involved and responded by tweeting an unflattering image of the Texas senator"s wife. Cruz also denied involvement.

The interviews are Melania Trump"s first moments in the public eye since the accusations over the last 10 days that have sent her husband"s White House bid reeling.

First, a 2005 video leaked of Trump using vulgar language to describe women and apparently boasting of sexual assault. And in recent days, several women have come forward to say that Trump had groped or sexually assaulted them.

The Republican nominee has denied the claims, calling the women liars and belittling their appearances.

In the interviews, Melania Trump deemed the celebrity businessman"s comments on the leaked tape "offensive to me and they were inappropriate."

"And he apologized to me," she said. "And I expect -- I accept his apology. And we are moving on."

She said something similar in a statement released by the campaign after the video"s release. She has also demanded retractions from a People Magazine writer who profiled the couple in 2005 and last week accused Donald Trump of an assault at the couple"s Florida home, Mar-a-Lago, while Melania was out of the room.

Melania Trump has never filled the role of the traditional political spouse, only making rare appearances on the campaign trail. Her speech at July"s national convention was initially praised until it was discovered that passages of it were lifted from Michelle Obama"s 2008 convention address.

Trump, who attended each of the first two presidential debates, was also lampooned on this week"s Saturday Night Live. The long-running sketch show ran a video in which actresses playing Melania Trump, her two step-daughters and two of the candidate"s most visible female allies did a version of Beyonce"s feminist manifesto "Lemonade" in an act of rebellion against the candidate.

The video ends with the Cecily Strong, the comedian playing Melania Trump, suggesting she wrote the song herself.

Reported by the Associated Press, posted by Hannah Wise, breaking news reporter.

Editorial: Melania Trump"s "extraordinary ability" to gain special ...

Melania Trump Copied Michelle Obama

America never has, and never will, face a shortage of attractive people looking under-fed and willing to pose for photos or stroll down a runway. The modeling profession will never require bending immigration rules so that our country doesnt get out-modeled by foreign competitors.

The only reason this needs clarification is because Melania Trump, who could become Americas next first lady, somehow finagled a coveted H1B visa in 2000 (the same year she began appearing in public with Donald Trump) under the guise of being a model. Not just any model but one of extraordinary ability, according to her application.

How a Slovenian fashion model pulled this off is still unclear, but its highly likely that someone of significant influence in very high places assisted. Someone like Donald Trump.

Only 65,000 H1B visas are awarded each year, which is an extremely small number compared with the high demand. The H1B visa program was created to ensure that American employers have access to top-level talent when American workers are unable to fill the void.

Employers in science, engineering and high-tech fields have been pleading with Congress for years to raise the cap on these visas because American companies are losing their competitive edge for lack of qualified talent. When key employees must exit the country because their work permits have expired and they cannot obtain an H1B visa, the employer is forced to scramble to find someone else of equal talent. Meanwhile, his former employee typically goes to work for competing companies in more immigration-friendly countries overseas.

That gives the overseas companies a competitive recruiting advantage. Because Congress has so radically restricted H1B access, top-notch scientists and computer engineers from China and India, among other countries, are opting to forgo the hassle of U.S. immigration laws altogether. This is one reason U.S. employers reduce their operations here and, instead, move to countries where fewer restrictions apply.

The United States has never faced a shortage of fashion models. The H1B program was never designed to help maintain Americas edge on the fashion runway. The visa that Melania Trump obtained came at the expense of some other employer who needed it for a more critical sort of worker.

Donald Trump, of course, denies having intervened on Melanias behalf. He also claims to be the standard-bearer of the movement to halt immigration abuses. If this doesnt qualify as an abuse of the system, what does?

The fact is, Trump lives and breathes by a double standard on immigration in which its perfectly fine to bend the rules when it suits his needs. When its other peoples lives, families and staffs on the verge of being split up, he shrugs his shoulders and pronounces, Get em outta here.

Democratic Congresswoman Copied Melania Trump"s R.N.C. Dress, but Not Her Speech

Melania Trump - Make Face Great Again - Tutorial

Both by Alex Wong/Getty Images.

The eagle-eyed sheriffs of the Twitterverse are constantly vigilant, ready to blow their whistles at any possible offensebe it fashion, feud, or folly. Last night, it was fashion. Ohio congresswoman Joyce Beatty spoke at the Democratic National Convention, but it was her outfit that made headlines. You might be thinking, Ugh, can we recognize women for more than what theyre wearing? But in this case, its an interesting conversation. You see, Beattys dress was identical to the $2,190 Roksanda one Melania Trump sported to deliver her now-infamous speech at the Republican National Convention (which coincidentally was in Beattys state of Ohio) last week.

DRESS PLAGIARISM, @NYDailyNews tweeted.

Did Joyce Beatty just plagiarize Melania Trumps outfit? @mashable asked.

Some people saw it differently, as more of a power play. In a complete baller move, Rep. Joyce Beatty wears Melania Trumps RNC dress at the DNC, @annehelen wrote.

It was unintentional mimicry turned power play, actually. Beatty told a local news affiliate that her husband bought the dress and asked her to wear it at the convention, and now its blowing up all over the nation that its the same as Mrs. Trumps. Shes not entirely sure if the two garments are identical, but she does know one thing:

I just know that I used my own words when I wore the dress.

Beatty then laughed things off, as if to remind us all that we were talking about clothes on a night of extreme historical significance.
