Weather Forecast: Mild for the first day of winter

First Day of Winter
MISSOULA -

Today marks the first day of winter, but the season will kick off to a quiet and mild start. Other than a few snow showers this morning near the Bitterroot and Swan Mountains, expect dry conditions with partly to mostly cloudy skies. Highs should be slightly warmer than average, warming into the upper 20s to upper 30s.

Increasing clearing in the cloud deck overnight will allow temperatures to cool into the single digits and teens, with some valley fog likely forming by Thursday morning.

Patchy fog may stick around in valleys through the morning hours tomorrow, particularly for those of northwest Montana that received the most moisture over the past few days. Otherwise, expect the quiet conditions to take us through thursday with highs in the 20s.

A system tracking in from the Pacific Northwest will spread snow showers across the Idaho-Montana border by early Friday morning, with isolated to scattered snow showers making their way across valleys through the day.

A more widespread snowfall event will move in Saturday and linger into Sunday morning. So, several valleys will have the chance to wake upto some light snow or flurries falling for Christmas morning!

The holiday weekend will also be on the cooler side, with highs in the teens and 20s and lows in the single digits to teens.
