No drama: Nationals are 2016 NL East champs

Peedi Crakk & Oschino (Full) - Drink Champs

PITTSBURGH - The 2016 Nationals won the National League East without drama, without wild pendulum swings, without the kind of indelible memories (both good and bad) that so often define championship seasons.

No, this was a methodical march to a division title by a ballclub that simply was very good throughout and wore down its opponents along the way.

And now, at last, these guys can celebrate their achievement.

The Nationals officially clinched the NL East crown tonight, beating the Pirates 6-1 at PNC Park and then watching as the Phillies fended off a furious Mets rally from 10 runs down at Citi Field, the 1-2 punch necessary to turn a magic number of two into a magic number of zero and ignite a champagne celebration in the visitors clubhouse here.

And they did it, as they so often have all season, in methodical fashion. They took a quick lead, expanded that lead shortly thereafter and then finished things off.

Might as well have been a condensed version of the 2016 season. The Nationals opened the Dusty Baker Era with a 9-1 record. They only briefly fell out of first place, for a measly four days in early May, then retook their lead over the Mets and Marlins and continued to expand it steadily over the next four months.

In the end, they managed to open up an 8 1/2-game lead on New York with only eight games remaining on the schedule. Thats all she wrote.

Its the franchises third division title in five years, and all were won in relatively convincing fashion. This team still has never found itself thrust into a down-to-the-wire pennant race, an oddity to be sure but one no one is complaining about considering the end results.

Next up: Winning a postseason series for the first time. The Nationals will face the NL West winners (almost certainly the Dodgers) in the NLDS, beginning Oct. 7. That best-of-five series will go a long way toward cementing this clubs legacy, but thats a story for another day.

Right now, this achievement deserves to be celebrated, and celebrate these Nationals will.

In the wake of Friday nights crushing loss, during which Mark Melancon blew the save with two outs in the ninth and Yusmeiro Petit surrendered the winning run in the 11th, the Nationals remained a loose and upbeat bunch this afternoon. At least a dozen players were in the PNC Park outfield some 4 1/2 hours before game time playing soccer, Frisbee, Nerf football or trying to fly a toy airplane.

This, after all, is a mostly veteran team, with a host of guys who have been here before and werent about to start panicking over a slightly delayed division title clinch.

And when they took the field for real at 7:07 p.m., they were all business, bursting out of the gates to open up a quick 3-0 lead behind Bryce Harpers sacrifice fly and Stephen Drews two-run single.

Handed that lead before he even took the mound, Joe Ross was sharp through his first two innings of work, throwing 25 of his 36 pitches for strikes. The right-hander, though, faded in the bottom of the third, and that caused some trouble.

Bakers ideal plan entering the game was for Ross to throw four or five innings, building upon his three-inning, 51-pitch return from the disabled list. The managers one caveat: He wanted Ross to avoid any prolonged innings. So when the right-hander needed 27 pitches to face six batters in the third, Baker decided not to push him any farther.

Sean Burnett entered with two outs and the bases loaded and coaxed a line out to right field from John Jaso, protecting a 3-1 lead. The Nationals still needed six more innings from their bullpen, but their lineup made sure to provide that group some more room for error.

Thanks in part to three Pirates errors, the Nationals scored three more runs in the top of the fourth, extending the lead to 6-1.

Meanwhile in Flushing, the Phillies were on a rampage, exploding to a 10-0 lead over the Mets that left manager Terry Collins benching many of his starters and sending the B squad out to the field for the rest of the night. Those backups did make it interesting, rallying to get to within striking distance, but not close enough to pull off the unthinkable.

And thanks to a dazzling performance out of the bullpen by Reynaldo Lopez, who took over in the bottom of the fourth and kept posting nothing but zeroes until he was pulled with one out in the ninth, the Nationals gave the Pirates no reason to conjure up thoughts of their own comeback.

Everything was academic. No drama. Just a methodical completion of the rest of the game.

It was, in the end, a fitting way for these Nationals to clinch this division title.

Co-champs emerge from Houston spelling bee to compete nationally

SMASH CHAMPS (iPhone Gameplay Video)

HOUSTON - After competing in 14 rounds with 53 total spellers from 42 Texas counties, Shourav Dasari, a Spring resident and seventh-grader at McCullough Jr. High in Conroe ISD, and Nihar Janga, an Austin resident and fifth-grader at River Ridge Elementary in Leander ISD, were awarded co-champion titles from the 2016 Houston Public Media Spelling Bee.

The two spellers will advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee May 22-27 in Washington, D.C., with an all-expenses-paid trip to "Bee Week."

"Guaguanche" was the winning word for Shourav and "snotziekte" was the winning word for Nihar in the Houston bee, the nations second largest local spelling bee. The bee went on for more than four hours and was broadcast live.

"Im excited and proud to represent Houston,"Shourav said. "I hope I can do my best in Washington, D.C."

This is Shourav"s second year competing at the Houston Public Media Spelling Bee. He tied for third place in 2014.

"Im very proud of myself," Nihar said. "I learned a lot of new spellings and I learned that if I put my mind to it, work really hard and not get distracted, I can achieve success."

This is Nihar"s second year at the bee. He came in third place in 2015.

This will be the first year that both compete at the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Shourav will be speller No. 233 at the Scripps National Spelling Bee and Nihar No. 232. They will join hundreds of contestant spellers from across the country at the 89th national bee, aiming for the victory and prizes worth more than $30,000. The bee will broadcast live nationally on ESPN during "Bee Week."

Participating spellers in Houston included 25 girls and 28 boys ranging in age from 9 to 14 years old and grades third through eighth, representing 1,130 schools in Texas.

"We are so proud of all the students that competed in our spelling bee today theyve all worked so hard to get here," said Lisa Trapani Shumate, associate vice president and general manager of Houston Public Media. "Its an honor to conduct and televise this highly competitive academic competition that showcases so many of their talents beyond vocabulary and grammar."

Section 1 wrestling sets records but has no state champs

Smash Champs - Launch Trailer

ALBANY In many respects, the 2016 New York State Championships were an extraordinary weekend for Section 1 wrestling.

There were 17 wrestlers from the section who placed in the top six in Division 1 (large schools), shattering the previous high of 12 from 2014. And a total of 22 placed between Division 1 and Division 2 (small schools), eclipsing the highof 18 from 2010 and 2013.

But despite the record-setting depth, there was also disappointment. For just the second time since 2009, there were no individual champions from Section 1. Four reached the finals East Ramapo senior Trey Wardlaw (106 pounds), Fox Lane sophomore Matt Grippi (138), Lakeland/Panas senior Alex Melikian (182) and Mahopac senior Mike DiNardo (195) but each was pitted against a defending state champion.

DiNardo came the closest to pulling off an upset, but came up on the short end of 3-1 decision against Ward Melvilles Christian Araneo. A two-point takedown from Araneo in the opening seconds turned out to be the difference. DiNardo pushed the pace for the rest of the match, but the equalizing move never came.

After he got that first takedown, I was a little off, DiNardo said. Then I felt like in the second and third period, I kept going after him, but he was pretty sound. After I got in on a shot, I feel like he just waited for a stalemate to get a fresh start.

More coverage from Albany: Videos from the finals and results from the placement matches

DiNardo has been one of the most improved wrestlers in the area in recent years after injuries plagued him earlier in his varsity career.

My sophomore year, I didnt even place (in the top six) at sectionals, he said. Then for my junior year to win sectionals and place fourth in the state, and this year win sectionals and be a state finalist, its pretty cool. It shows that these past two years of working hard really paid off.

Melikian was a welcomed addition for the Section 1 team. He transferred from Kennedy Catholic for his final season and became the first state finalist to ever come out of Lakeland High.

I started off at the middle school there, and coming back after all of this time, and Ive wanted to see kids get into that program, Melikian said after a 13-4 loss to Shenendehowas Kevin Parker in the finals. Ive wanted to see my friends and peers, kids younger than me, excel and do great things in wrestling. I just really hope that kids are going to say, Hey, look. We have a state finalist. I can get to that point, too.

Wardlaw, who entered the state tournament unseeded at 106 pounds, may have been overlooked by some. But wrestlers from the once-failing East Ramapo program are used to being the underdog.

After nearly folding a few years ago, Wardlaw was one of the keys to reinvigorating the Titans. He made it all the way to the state finals, losing a 6-1 decision to Eastport South Manors Adam Busiello, the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the country at 106 pounds. Wardlaw was the first state finalist from the East Ramapo district since 1975.

Its a big accomplishment, Wardlaw said. I give thanks to (coach Ryan Kearns), his assistant (Rob Preiss), and my other coach (Corey Drummond), who couldnt be with us here. Its thanks to them and my hard work. They built a good program, and hopefully they can strive for more in the future.

Grippi was also up against the top-ranked wrestler in the country in his finals match. Hilton junior Yianni Diakomihalis, who is probably the best pound-for-pound wrestler in the state, became a four-time state champ with a 13-5 major decision over Grippi.

In spite of the loss, Grippi is a strong bet to eventually get to the top of the podium.

It goes both ways, Grippi said. I dont like using it the excuse that, its OK because Im a sophomore and Ill be back next year. Im in the moment now I want to win now. At the same time, its nice knowing that I have 365 more days to train and get back to this spot.

Increased demand for Champs grandstand tickets

Smash Champs (by Kiloo) - iOS - iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch Gameplay

The Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA), governing body of high school sports, is reporting increased demand for National Stadium grandstand tickets from fans of the ISSA-GraceKennedy Boys and Girls" Championships. Colleen Montague, chairperson of the ISSA committee that organises the five-day high school athletics meet, says that orders for grandstand tickets are up by as much as 300 per cent. Montague is also reporting that gate management will improve at this year"s renewal of the meet known widely as "Champs".

In response to a query on ticket sales for the upcoming event, Montague said, "Orders are up by about 300 per cent." Much of the increase is apparently coming from persons who successfully ordered tickets in previous years. "They ordered one last year and they"re ordering 5-10 this year, which we"ll be unable to meet that demand," she related, "so those requests will not be filled because we will simply be going by the numbers we had last year."

The cap on grandstand ticket sales is caused by the number of available seats. Said Montague: "Limited space is our greatest problem, and expansion is impossible at this point."

Opened in 1962 to host the Central American and Caribbean Games, the National Stadium has a grandstand that seats 5,000 patrons.

ISSA"s Champs chairperson said that improvements in gate management are afoot.

"On the Saturday afternoon (last year), we unfortunately had a breakdown because we had ticket holders and non-ticket holders in the same place, so that is something we will avoid this year," she said.

The big event is set for the National Stadium from March 15 to 19.

NCS wrestling: De La Salle, Las Lomas repeat as duals champs

SCH - Champs-Élysées (Parodie)

BRENTWOOD -- Las Lomas High does not yet have the resume which De La Salle"s wrestling program has accomplished, but the two programs flexed some muscle Saturday to repeat as North Coast Section dual meet champions.

A week after winning the prestigious Mission San Jose Warrior Invitational, Las Lomas rolled crosstown rival Northgate 64-12 to win the Division 2 title. While the Knights were celebrating their second straight NCS duals title, De La Salle routed Liberty 59-6 in the Division 1 final for its ninth dual championship in 10 years.

The Knights made quick work of Northgate, opening the match with first-round pins by Angelo Westmacott (184 pounds) and Max Bossert (197). Dalton Thebeau (115) and Iaroslav Titov (134) also rang up first-round falls for Las Lomas.

"Everyone is putting the time in," Knights head coach John Welch said. "Everyone -- the wrestlers, the coaches, the school, the parents. That"s how good things happen."

The Spartans continued to assert themselves as the reigning power in the section on the mat. They lost just three individual matches in the tournament. They started with a 64-3 rout of Pittsburg, then shut out San Leandro 84-0 in the semifinal.

"I always prepare not to be that dominant," De La Salle coach Mark Halvorson said. "I"m pleased that we are that dominant. Liberty has a great team, and we wrestled really good today."

The Spartans were relentless in the final, starting when 184-pounder Mitch Van Loon pinned Estevan DeVilla in 1 minute, 45 seconds in the opening bout. Davon Skarich followed with a 73-second pin at 197, and Darryl Aiello pinned in 56 seconds at 287.

The dual featured three bouts between returning NCS medal winners. In a rematch of a 120-pound semifinal from last year, Patrick Ramirez of the Spartans pinned Tino Curiel in 4:49. De La Salle"s Donovin Guerrero beat Briar Edwards 9-0 at 134 pounds, almost a year after they met in an NCS final match. At 154, returning champion Justin Hansz salvaged some pride for the Lions with a 3-1 victory over Peyton Omania.

Bruno Fratus Impresses Again in Sprints in Senior Champs Morning Session

DArtagnan Dias contributedto this report.

Brazilian sprinterBruno Fratus was impressive on Friday morning in the Senior Champs portion of the mens 100 free in Brazil before flagging in the evening open session. h**l hope to avoid that same pattern on Saturday in the 50 free after swimming a 21.45 for the fastest time of the day.

WithCesar Cielo scratching that 50 (he was a 21.60 leading off a relay, making him 2nd in line for a spot at the long course World Championships next summer), Fratus will be chased in the open most likely by Matheus Santana. Second-and-third fastest swims in the senior division in the morning went toNicholas Santos in 22.15 andWalter Pereira in 22.17.

The womens 50 free also had impressive times, as 50 meter backstroke queenEtienne Medeiros swam a 24.99 in the 50 free for the fastest swim. She and the very tallGraciele Hermann (25.05) will battle this one out in finals, though for now both are qualified for the World Championships with still two qualifying meets left to go.

The other Worlds qualifying swim in the morning came in the mens 100 breaststroke, whereFelipe Franca swam a 1:00.44.
