Nashville to vote in mayor"s race featuring heavy spending

NASHVILLE -- The seven candidates vying to become Nashville"s next mayor have spent a combined $12.5 million on their bids -- the equivalent of $43 for every registered voter in Music City.

Voters go to the polls Thursday to choose among Councilwoman Megan Barry, attorney Charles Robert Bone, hedge fund manager David Fox, real estate mogul Bill Freeman, Criminal Court Clerk Howard Gentry, charter school founder Jeremy Kane and businesswoman Linda Eskind Rebrovick.

Four of the candidates have spent more than $1 million of their own money on the race to succeed term-limited Mayor Karl Dean, led by the $3.6 million Freeman has poured into his own campaign. Amid the flood of television advertisements, candidate forums, direct mail and yard signs, it"s unlikely that any of the hopefuls will reach the 50 percent threshold to avoid a runoff between the top two finishers on Sept. 10.

The election comes as the city seeks to sustain its momentum as a popular destination for tourists, relocating businesses and new residents, while trying to balance its growth with the efforts to preserve the character of the city that made it such an attraction in the first place.

The city"s population has grown by 16 percent since 2000 and shows little sign of slowing down. And Nashville"s growing traffic problems and transit needs are taking on a new priority amid the familiar refrain -- heard in mayor"s races across the South -- that nobody wants the city to become another Atlanta, where rapid growth has been accompanied by notorious gridlock.

Dean said the recognition of a need for transit solutions is a new development since he ran in 2007, when "nobody really paid attention" to his proposals for rapid bus transit.

"Eight years later, it"s the No. 1 or No. 2 issue in the city," he said. "Because people want to see it happen."

Although the candidates have generally spoken in favor of public transit, they have offered few specific proposals. The current mayor"s own experience may be leading them to exercise caution.

Dean last year abandoned his $175 million plan to create a 7-mile bus route on dedicated lanes to connect the eastern and western sides of the city through downtown. The proposal faced vocal opposition from some businesses and residents in affluent areas on the western section of the route.

But Dean said he considers that setback temporary.

"Southern cities in particular don"t have a history of mass transit, and you get into a lot of issues like "I"m all for transit, but not around me,"" he said. But freer movement in, out and around the city is a quality of life issue for most residents and commuters, he said.

"Nashville is the hub of the region," he said. "And for Nashville to keep its economic prominence, you"re going to need high-quality transit."

Dean"s predecessor, Bill Purcell, agrees.

"People can fly into Nashville, do a full day of business, go back to the airport and fly out," he said. "That"s not easy in New York, it"s very hard in Los Angeles, it"s not simple in London."

Residents who remember not too long ago being able to reach any point of the city within 10 or 15 minutes find the traffic jams all the more grating, he said.

Although the level of spending on the Nashville"s mayor"s race has come as a surprise, self-funding by candidates is not a new phenomenon. Phil Bredesen, then a fairly unknown health care entrepreneur, in 1987 spent more than $3 million -- or more than $6.3 million in today"s dollars -- on his first race for mayor. He lost that bid, but won in his second try, and later served two terms as governor.

And Dean, the current mayor, spent more than $1 million on his successful bid in 2007.

Purcell said he was encouraged that so many candidates want to drop so much money on running for the office.

"There was a time when most people, including me, would say, "No, you run for mayor,"" he said. "What"s happened since the late 1990s in most of America is a recognition that it"s the mayor of a city that plays the critical role in assuring your quality of life."

Enough with the Will Smith-Jada Pinkett Smith breakup rumors

Story highlights
  • A story claimed the couple was splitting this summer
  • Smith took to Facebook to refute the rumors

That"s the first thing you need to know. The actors, who have been married for 17 years, were the subject of breakup rumors on Monday after a RadarOnline report claimed the pair had quietly worked out a $240 million deal to "split at the end of the summer."

The site Gossip Cop was quickly on the case, saying it just wasn"t true.

Of course, that didn"t stop the chatter, which seemed to grow as the day went on. It"s not the first time such a story about one of Hollywood"s highest-profile couples has surfaced, and here are a few reasons why we need it to stop:

Will Smith has better things to do than respond to your worries.

Smith hasn"t had the greatest luck at the box office in the past few years (we still aren"t over 2008"s "Seven Pounds"), and we need him to focus on getting back on track. He"s super-talented, and fans are looking forward to his upcoming projects, including "Suicide Squad" and "Bad Boys 3."

Having to jump on his Facebook page like he did Monday to say "I promise you all - if I ever decide to divorce my Queen - I SWEAR I"ll tell you myself!" is just a distraction.

There are children involved!

The couple are parents to teens Jaden and Willow (as well as Will"s son, Trey, from an earlier marriage), so let"s be sensitive to what these breakup rumors do to them.

Actually, we know what they do, as we could hear Willow laughing all the way from Twitter when she let it be known how ridiculous she thought the whole story had become.

Jada Pinkett Smith is doing important work.

We"d much rather talk about the actress" efforts to end human trafficking within the United States. This summer, she partnered with CNN to expose the billion-dollar industry of child s*x trafficking as part of the CNN Freedom Project.

There are other celebrity couples who are actually breaking up.

While folks were scouring the internet for details on a Smith breakup, Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale as well as Reba McEntire and Narvel Blackstock were actually splitting.

Don"t let yourself be distracted.

HitchBOT thumbs through town

Hitchhiking is illegal on turnpikes and generally frowned upon elsewhere in the commonwealth but one little guy has been making his way around the world doing just that.HitchBOT, a hitchhiking robot, is a seasoned traveler and Internet phenomenon and last Friday many Marblehead residents and visitors had the opportunity meet HitchBOT as it embarked on its cross-country tour of the U.S. en route to San Francisco. The pint size robot has a bucket for a body, foam noodles for its arms and legs and wears yellow rubber gloves and patterned rubber boots. He was created by two Canadian academics, Frauke Zeller, assistant professor of professional communication at Torontos Ryerson University and David Harris Smith, assistant professor in communication studies at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario as a social experiment.Zeller and Harris Smith met Marblehead resident Rhod Sharp Thursday, July 18, during launch party of sorts at the Peabody Essex Museum. Sharp wanted interview with HitchBOT for his BBC radio program and at this stage Zeller and Harris Smith had not yet made a final decision on the exact spot where HitchBOT would start its next cross-country tour, accept that it needed to be on the coast. Sharp suggested HitchBOT try thumbing for a ride out of Swampscott or Marblehead and the latter was chosen. On Friday morning HitchBOT, Zeller and Harris Smith came to Sharps home on Franklin Street for the interview and chose Front Street for the secret start location. HitchBOT was positioned at the junction of Front and Franklin streets, with its thumb raised skyward and San Francisco or bust written on its head.Last year HitchBOT thumbed its way across Canada, from Halifax Nova Scotia to Victoria, British Columbia covering over 10,000 kilometers in just 26 days and getting a total of 19 lifts. Since then it has visited Germany and taken a vacation in the Netherlands.HitchBOT is equipped with a GPS, which enables its creators to track its progress while artificial intelligence provides it with the ability to carry on limited conversation and tell people where it is. Sitting in Sharps living room HitchBOT said, I am in Marblehead. He also told Sharp he had a very appealing personality and asked him out on a date.Once HitchBOT was put in position on Front Street, it announced to the small crowd that came to see him off, I have changed my mind, however by then the die was truly cast. He was soon to be on his way.Designed as an experiment in social interaction, HitchBOT has a strong social media presence and is followed by over 30,000 people worldwide including the many people who took photographs at the Peabody Essex Museum party.Page 2 of 2 - Despite the local attention, HitchBOT"s first travelling companions out of town were quite slow to materialize. Zeller and Harris Smith were just starting to think about moving HitchBOT to a busier location when a large black SUV drove by and then came back and parked.Out came the Siess family who were visiting from Cologne, Germany. They recognized HitchBOT from an appearance on German TV and had a spare seat in their SUV. A deal was quickly struck and they agreed to give the robot its first ride to Gloucester and possibly on to New York, and off they went.According to HitchBOTs Facebook page, by press time, it reached Gloucester where it was taken out on a boat ride.To follow HitchBOTs adventures check out his website at http://www.hitchbot.me/ or his Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/hitchbot.

Two nights after thinking he was traded, Wilmer Flores puts Mets by..

NEW YORK -- Wilmer Flores gave Mets fans one more reason to fall for him -- this time with his bat as well as his heart.

The new favorite at Citi Field hit a leadoff homer in the 12th inning to lift New York over the Washington Nationals 2-1 Friday night in the opener of a pivotal series between the top teams in the NL East.

Two nights after endearing himself to Mets rooters when they saw him wiping tears away at shortstop after he thought he"d been traded, Flores received four standing ovations on an invigorating day for the Mets.

"New York fans get a lot of criticism for being tough. They take a lot of heat for how hard they are on people. What they did for Wilmer Flores, you"re not going to find in a lot of places," Mets manager Terry Collins said.

Just a few minutes before the 4 p.m. trade deadline, the Mets gave their meager offense a major boost by obtaining slugger Yoenis Cespedes fromDetroitfor two minor league pitchers.

Hours later, Flores drove in both Mets runs and made a spectacular defensive play at second base to back Matt Harvey.

"I"m sitting here looking at some guys who are outstanding writers. Outstanding. You couldn"t write that. You guys couldn"t come up with that. And you"re good. That"s unbelievable,"" Collins said.

Flores sent a 1-1 fastball from Felipe Rivero (1-1) to left-center for his 11th home run and first in 147 at-bats since June 12 against Atlanta. Fans jumped out of their seats and roared in a delighted frenzy as Flores pumped his arm and circled the bases, pointing to the word "Mets" across his chest when he came around third.

"Great feeling," said a grinning Flores, who was asked if he"d ever been cheered that way before. "Yeah. Not that loud."

The 23-year-old infielder tossed aside his helmet and was swarmed by teammates who rushed to home plate to celebrate. New York pulled within two games of first-place Washington and washed away the sour taste of Thursday, when the Mets squandered a six-run lead in a gut-wrenching loss to San Diego.

"Words can"t really describe what has been going through his head and us as a team the last couple days," Harvey said. "For tonight to happen the way it did, it"s pretty unreal.""

Flores has three game-ending RBIs this season. The Mets said that tiesCubsshortstopStarlin Castrofor most in the majors, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

As fans filed out of Citi Field, they chanted "Wil-mer Flores! Wil-mer Flores!"

"Just because the kid showed that players are human beings,"" Collins said, "he"s got them now and it"s really exciting to see."

Carlos Torres (4-4) struck out the side in the top of the 12th.

Nationals slugger Bryce Harper was ejected in the 11th after taking a called third strike and screaming right in the face of plate umpire Jerry Meals.

"Just sticking up for my team, and myself, at the same time. He was bad all night," Harper said.

Harper, now 0-for-17 against Harvey, had reached base safely in a career-best 26 consecutive games before going hitless in five at-bats. The fourth-year outfielder has been tossed six times in his career, three this season.

"He needs to stay in the baseball game,"" manager Matt Williams said. "We talked about it. We"ll talk about it again."

Flores put the Mets ahead in the fourth against Gio Gonzalez with a two-out RBI single off the glove of diving shortstop Ian Desmond.

Yunel Escobar tied it in the eighth with a two-out RBI single on Harvey"s final pitch.

An energetic and vocal crowd of 36,164 turned out for the opener of a three-game set, the most significant series in years for the Mets.

"We"ve got to make up some ground here so we can stay in the hunt,"" Collins said before the game.

Harvey was up to the occasion. He retired his first 16 batters before Jose Lobaton singled in the sixth, prompting a collective groan and then a warm hand from fans who began chanting "Harvey! Harvey!" an inning earlier.

The right-hander, who owns a 0.99 ERA in eight career starts against the Nationals, was backed by a string of exceptional defensive plays. Flores stretched out for a diving stop in the first, earning his initial standing ovation of the night.

"I didn"t anticipate that,"" he said.

KEEP ME, TOO

The other Mets player mentioned in reports Wednesday night of a trade with Milwaukee that ultimately fell through was injured pitcher Zack Wheeler, recovering from Tommy John surgery. General manager Sandy Alderson said he intended to reach out to Wheeler -- but the right-hander called him Friday to express his desire to remain with New York. "Actually had quite an impact,"" Alderson said.

TRAINER"S ROOM

Nationals: RHP Stephen Strasburg (left oblique strain) is slated to throw 80-85 pitches Monday in his second rehab outing for Triple-A Syracuse.

Mets: C Travis d"Arnaud went 0-for-4 with a walk in his return from the disabled list. ... LF Michael Cuddyer (left knee inflammation) is expected to begin playing rehab games in the next few days. "He"s feeling a lot better," Collins said. ... LHP Jerry Blevins (broken left forearm) was finally cleared Thursday to begin a throwing program. He was injured April 19. ... LHP Jack Leathersich, who was at Triple-A Las Vegas, had Tommy John surgery Thursday. Leathersich went 0-1 with a 2.31 ERA in 17 games for the Mets this season.

UP NEXT

Nationals rookie Joe Ross (2-3, 3.03 ERA) starts the middle game of the series against All-Star Jacob deGrom (10-6, 2.05).

If you want a clear indicator of just how dominant UFC womens bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey is, consider that the big question fans and media are debating ahead of her main-event bout at UFC 190 in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday (10 p.m. ET pay-per-view) isnt whether shell beat challenger Bethe Correia its how quickly.

And, lest you assume that faster is better, at least when it comes to proving ones superiority over an opponent in the cage, you should know that this is the rare situation where you might be wrong.

On paper, theres no good reason to think Correia (9-0 mixed martial arts, 3-0 UFC) stands a chance of beating Rousey (11-0, 5-0). The Brazilian challengers unbeaten record might look like a match for the champions, but not every winning streak is created equal.

For instance, the three opponents Correia has faced in the UFC so far are a combined 1-7. The fact that two of those opponents happened to be Rouseys friends and teammates, whom Correia gleefully picked off as if in a conscious effort to get the champs attention, is at least part of the reason why shes getting this title shot in her home country, despite being an 18-1 underdog according to some oddsmakers.

The other part is theres simply no one else left in the UFC womens bantamweight division. Rousey has demolished the four fighters below her in the UFCs official womens 135-pound rankings.

The only one of those four to make it out of the first round against Rousey is current top contender Miesha Tate, whom Rousey has already beaten twice. Of the three UFC title defenses that followed Rouseys second win against Tate, the longest a TKO victory over Olympic silver medalist wrestler Sara McMann took a little more than a minute. The other two lasted a combined 30 seconds.

This is whatRousey is known for, these quick and easy victories. After winning the bronze medal in judo at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, she tried her hand at amateur MMA in 2010 and then went pro in 2011. And it wasnt until her rematch with Tate in 2013 that she needed more than one round to put away any opponent.

Correia would seem to be a prime candidate for another early night. Shes smaller than Rousey, nowhere near as powerful or athletic, and nothing about the grappling prowess shes demonstrated so far in the UFC gives us any reason to think shell be able to avoid Rouseys signature submission, the armbar.

Nothing, that is, except for Rouseys promise to take her time and make Correias punishment last.

After Correia mocked Rouseys teammates in her post-fight celebrations, then appeared to take a jab at the suicide death of Rouseys father in interviews leading up to this fight, Rousey vowed to make Correia suffer, to humiliate her in addition to defeating her.

"Some things take longer,"Rousey said in May. "Like, a choke takes longer than an armbar, and a TKO takes longer than the choke. I might go for the prolonged finishinstead."

You might think that would make her something of a villain in Brazil, where shell be fighting in Correias backyard, but as former UFC heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira pointed out when Rousey was mobbed by adoring Brazilian fans during this weeks open workouts in Rio, Rouseys star power eclipses her country of origin.

"Ronda now looks like the Mike Tyson of the (female fighters),"Nogueira says. "She has no nationality."

Bethe Correia is a huge underdog against bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey at UFC 190, but she is intent on shocking the world. USA TODAY Sports

That comparison is apt in terms of more than just pure celebrity. Like Tyson, Rouseys penchant for quick finishes makes her fights seem at times like they arent competitive enough to be worth the $59.99 purchase price on PPV. Unlike Tyson, she lives in an age when fights like her last one a 14-second submission win againstCat Zingano show up on the Internet in their entirety mere minutes after the fight is over.

In that sense, Rouseys promise to "drag it out and make the finish more exciting"might be the best possible selling point for what looks like a colossal mismatch. Rousey flipping another over-matched opponent onto her head, then extending her arm until she quits or has her elbow ruined, all in less time than it takes to microwave a cup of soup? Weve seen that. A vengeful Rousey expressing her violent wrath in patient, excruciating strokes? That would be something new.

As the fight draws closer, however, Rousey has begun walking back that promise somewhat. She admits she got "chewed out"by her mother, another former judo champion, for planning to prolong the bout. The longer the fight goes, even against an opponent as out of her depth as Correia seems to be, the more stressful it will be on her mother, Rousey notes.

"But Im going to be so dominant in every single second of it,"Rousey says. "Even though its going to be longer, shes not going to have to see her baby get hit."

Lynn Anderson, "Rose Garden" singer, dies

Lynn Anderson, whose version of the song "(I Never Promised You a) Rose Garden" was one of the biggest country hits of the 1970s, has died. She was 67.

Anderson died Thursday of a heart attack at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville after being admitted for pneumonia, publicist Mark Logsdon told CNN.

Anderson was born in Grand Forks, North Dakota, in 1947, and grew up in Sacramento, California. Born to the music business -- both her parents were songwriters -- she got her start as a professional singer while still in her teens, releasing her first record, "For Better or for Worse," when she was 19.

Soon Anderson was having major success, with such hits as 1967"s "If I Kiss You (Will You Go Away)" and 1969"s "That"s a No-No" and appearances on "The Lawrence Welk Show."

She had her biggest hit, the Joe South-penned "Rose Garden," in late 1970 and early 1971. The song was No. 1 on the country charts for five weeks and topped out at No. 3 on Billboard"s pop charts.

"I totally believed in Joe South, and in this song," she told Country Stars Online. A share of the credit, Anderson added, was due to then-Columbia Records head Clive Davis, whom she called "my hero." It was Davis who championed the song as a single and helped promote it.

Her performance netted the singer a Grammy for best country vocal performance (female) and helped her win female vocalist of the year from the Country Music Association in 1971.

All told, Anderson had 18 country Top 10 hits, including five No. 1 songs. Among her other hits: "Rocky Top," the Felice and Boudleaux Bryant tune that"s one of Tennessee"s state songs. Anderson"s version hit No. 17 on the country charts in 1970.

"I am a huge fan of Lynn"s. She was always so nice to me. She did so much for the females in country music," country star Reba McEntire said in a statement.

Anderson"s final album, "Bridges," came out last month.

The singer is survived by her father, Casey Anderson, partner, Mentor Williams, three children and four grandchildren.

The cast of WHAS: First Day Of Camp The cast of WHAS: First Day Of Camp

Wet Hot American Summer: First Day Of Camp is the type of television project that evokes skepticism in the people most excited for it. Even some diehard fans of the cult comedy were worried about the risk of WHAS devolving from a lean, focused film to a bloated, meandering series (or, put another way, the risk of an end-of-summer Coop turning into a beginning-of-summer Coop.) Thats a concern for any film-to-television adaptation, but for WHAS, theres also the matter of Michael Showalter and David Wains comedic sensibility, which is almost always deployed in films with a running time of just under or barely over 90 minutes. Joke-a-minute genre spoofs are supposed to get in and get out, and its been that way since the days of Zucker, Abraham, and Zucker. So how will WHAS work as what is essentially a four-hour movie?

Thats not a simple question to answer, but Campers Arrive does a phenomenal job of laying any concerns to rest. Netflixs all-at-once distribution model will play a huge role in the response to First Day Of Camp, and it may put the audience in a bit of a bind. No one is obligated to barrel through the series in an afternoon, but its so easy to doespecially if all the episodes are as funny as Campers Arriveand still might not be the optimal way to consume a type of comedy typically doled out in fine-dining portions. Im reminded of that social experiment in which kids are offered a few pieces of candy immediately or a handful of candy if they can bear to wait for it. Im almost certain First Day Of Camp works better if the episodes are spaced out by a day or so (as my reviews will be), but if I wasnt reviewing them according to that schedule, theres no way Id be able to resist.

But these are heady concerns for another day, or rather, later in the day. For now, let us bask in the sunshine of Campers Arrive, a hilarious and pitch-perfect extension of the WHAS brand. Its June 24, 1981, eight weeks before the events of the movie, and the Camp Firewood gang is the almost the same as it ever was. Coop is just as much of a mensch, and is equally vulnerable to infatuation. Andy is already putting way too much effort into acting like he could care less. Victor has already established his undeserved Big Man Around Camp image. Katie is sweetness and light, and Beth has the same no-nonsense approach that will later help her avert danger from a falling chunk of space-station debris.

Then again, a lot can change over a summer. Ben and McKinley havent figured out their situation yet, and if there is any justice in the world, their love story will take up as much real estate as possible. Arty is discovering his passion for broadcasting, and probably his aversion to soap. Neil doesnt like having a p***s stuffed in his ear, but as I think about it, thats probably a consistent trait. Theyre the same characters we know and love, but the two-month-earlier versions. Its a testament to how meticulously Wain and Showalter reverse engineered the film that despite the visual joke of much older actors playing younger versions of their original characters, First Day Of Camp actually feels like watching the characters eight weeks before the movie. In truth, that joke only really works for Coop, who at 16 has the gut of a 54-year-old professional ice-cream taster.

Campers Arrive works admirably well as an episode of television as opposed to feeling like a 30-minute chunk of a really long movie, but it also has the first-episode advantage. It feels like a television episode because it gets to lay out all the plot elements First Day Of Camp will play with, including Camp Firewoods financial woes, its fierce rivalry with the rich snobs at Camp Tigerclaw, and the pools of apparently radioactive sludge being dumped at the campsite. That its jam-packed with hilarious lines and typically absurdist sight gags is merely a bonus. Its going to be a lovely day.

    Stray observations:
    • Its impossible to do a WHAS review thats just a hail of joke bullets, so Im not going to do that. Who has the energy? But the Strays will run long every time.
    • Coop on Beths sense of humor: Its a very dry wit, but its very funny.
    • Josh Charles is such a fine addition to the cast, and I want him to devote the rest of his career to comedy.
    • Lake Bell man, where to even begin? Coops reunion with his girlfriend Donna is one of the funniest things Ive seen in a long time. Bell nailed Donnas reaction to Coops cloying sweetness: Awww ewww.
    • This show is clearly going to be densely packed with callbacks, as when Mitch is having his snack, a can of mixed vegetables with the top opened just enough.
    • McKinley, in response to Andys crack about his shorts: I got them from your moms dresser. Andy: Dont make fun of the guy who dresses my mom.
    • Why is there a rich side of the lake? Id love to read a history of the region.
    • Electro City sounds breathtaking. That said, I couldnt help feeling like John Slattery is slightly miscast, and I really liked him in 30 Rocks Brooklyn Without Limits, which was just as silly. Maybe Ill warm up to him.
    • I love Drew. I love everything about Drew. I love every line Drew utters, and Thomas Barbusca is a genius. What?! I like doing stuff like that!
