Badgers women"s hockey: Late goals lift UW to sweep of Cornell

Wisconsin vs Northwestern football 2016

Junior Annie Pankowski scored the go-ahead goal her second of the game in the second period and the top-ranked University of Wisconsin womens hockey team pulled away for a 5-2 victory in a non-conference game Saturday night at LaBahn Arena.

Tonight was a battle, UW coach Mark Johnson said. They competed very hard which, if youre playing against opponents that do that you end up getting better by playing those types of opponents. Well gain a lot of things from tonights game and other than the victory which is obviously the most important part is overall it will help us become better and stronger.

The Badgers (14-1-1) scored twice in the second period and added a goal midway through the third to cap a series sweep of the Big Red (6-4-1). UW defeated Cornell 3-0 on Friday night.

I thought they brought a different challenge than obviously in some of our WCHA opponents, Pankowski said It was nice to see what the East Coast has to bring and I thought we rose to that challenge this weekend.

Junior Maddie Rolfes, sophomore Sam Cogan and senior Sydney McKibbon each added goals for the Badgers.

Freshman Nikki Cece, Fridays winner, stopped 12 of 14 shots for her third career victory.

Rolfes put UW up 1-0 just 1:10 into the game before Cornell tied it up. Pankowski put the Badgers back in front 2 minutes later before Cornell again knotted the score.

The Badgers will continue their homestand with a weekend series against No. 2 Minnesota. Faceoff on Saturday is set for 3:30 p.m., while Sundays game, which will air on Fox Sports Wisconsin, starts at 2 p.m.
