FedEx: 'Show-Me Story is Showing Up'

By Ben Levisohn

BofA Merrill Lynch added FedEx (FDX) to its US 1 list today, but it wasnt the only investment bank with kind words for the express shipper today. Citigroups Christian Wetherbee and team note that FedExs show-me story is showing up. They explain:

We routinely hear that FedEx is confusing because the stock has done well (+57% in 2013 and +24% YTD), but there is no evidence that the Express restructuring is working and earnings growth is all driven by the buybackwe believe that as FedEx delivers (pun intended) on its targets, there is the potential for meaningful upside from current levels as investors rotate into the stock (potentially from Rails or other Industrials), which trades at an attractive 17x NTM EPS

Based on our analysis of the individual components of FedExs Express Profit Improvement Plan, we believe the segment has realized a solid $300m of net improvement to profitability from its efforts. F2015 seems particularly exciting in that incremental initiatives are coming on line (aircraft replacement & domestic network reorg) which should help drive greater benefits and should be augmented by lower fuel prices.

Beyond the companys progress toward its Express profit improvement plan, we believe both FedEx and UPS (UPS) are on the verge of generating real pricing power. This trend should be the incremental catalyst to earnings and the stock post-holiday in C2015. Assuming both FedEx and UPS remain rational, we believe pricing could inflect to +3-4% from its recent +2-3% range driving greater earnings power and an improved valuation

FedEx is also the biggest beneficiary of lower fuel prices in our coverage, thus we reiterate our Buy and FedEx remains on the Citi Focus List.

Weatherbee raised his target on FedEx to $210 from $190.

Shares of FedEx have gained 1.5% to $180.33 at 12:13 p.m. today, while UPS has.risen 0.5% to $110.37.

When to image a hard drive, and when to clone it

Robert Spann asked how best to copy everything on his internal drive. Should he image the drive, or clone it?

Cloning copies the complete contents of one drivethe files, the partition tables and the master boot recordto another: a simple, direct duplicate. Imaging copies all of that to a single, very large file on another drive. You can then restore the image back onto the existing drive or onto a new one.

Typically, people use these techniques to back up the drive, or when upgrading to a larger or faster drive. Both techniques will work for each of these chores. But imaging usually makes more sense for a backup, while cloning is the easiest choice for drive upgrades.

[Have a tech question? Ask PCWorld Contributing Editor Lincoln Spector. Send your query to answer@pcworld.com.]

Why not just drag and drop? Thats fine for an unbootable drive. But you cant just drag and drop an operating system. If its the drive you boot from, only cloning or imaging can reliably make a working copy.

If youre moving to a new drive, cloning is the easier solution. Its one step. You plug in the new driveeither in a spare bay, or through a USB/SATA adapterlaunch the cloning software, and do the job.

Imaging, on the other hand, requires you to do all of that twice. You plug a third, spare drive into the PC and create the image file on it. Then you swap the old drive for the new one, and restore the image to the new drive.I suppose you might choose imaging if you dont have either an extra bay or a USB/SATA adapter, but you do have an external drive with sufficient free space.

Imaging makes more sense for backup, because you can put multiple image backups onto one sufficiently large external hard drive. You can only put one clone on a drive. In fact, several backup programs, including my current favorite for imaging and cloning, EaseUS ToDo Backup Free, allow you to make small incremental image backups, recording how the contents of the drive change day to day.

There is one advantage to cloning for backups. Should your main drive crash, you can swap in a cloned drive and be back in action almost immediately. With an image, youd have to buy a new internal drive and restore the backup to it.

But if you really need to be up and running that fast, and youre willing to dedicate an entire drive for that purpose, youd be better off putting the two drives together into a RAID 2. That way, the spare drive will be completely up to date.

Miami Dolphins take Crosspointe students shopping

Eighteen students from Crosspointe Elementary School were among more than 100 children from Palm Beach, Broward and Dade counties who were accompanied by the Miami Dolphins on a Thanksgiving shopping spree at Publix supermarkets.

Current and former players, cheerleaders, the mascot, staff and the Miami Dolphins Women's Organization members were paired with the students, who each received $100 to spend and a calculator to keep track as they went through the store.

"It's great to come out and shop with the kids," Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill said in a statement, of the 11th annual Kids and Fins event. "It's more of a benefit to us than it is to the kids to see the smile on their faces and see them having fun."

Publix treated the students to dinner, gave them T-shirts and the students performed in a dance contest before selecting holiday meal items to take home to their families.

"It's great that the Miami Dolphins gave back to our kids and I am so privileged to give my students this opportunity," said Crosspointe Principal Annmarie Dilbert. "The expressions on the kids' faces were priceless getting to see a Miami Dolphins football player will be an experience that lasts for a lifelong memory."

One of the Crosspointe students, Wesnel Romain, 10, a fifth-grader, wrote a letter to the Miami Dolphins expressing his gratitude.

"To the Miami Dolphins, I really must express my gratitude for the time and food you gave me," he wrote.

"I realize how busy you are and know that it took a lot of your time to take me shopping. Your loving action was truly appreciated. Yesterday I was able to eat a delicious steak dinner with vegetables."

He ends his letter by simply saying, "thank you."

Mike Pettine will announce Wednesday if it's Johnny Manziel or Brian Hoyer: 'I ...

BEREA, Ohio -- A subdued Browns coach Mike Pettine said Monday he'll likely announce Wednesday if Johnny Manziel will replace Brian Hoyer, and that he hasn't made up his mind yet.

"(I'm) not ready to make a decision on that at this point,'' he said. "I'm not leaning one way or the other, but there's a lot to consider."

Pettine acknowledged that it's a difficult decision and one he'll take very seriously. He'll make it in conjunction with his offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggains and general manager Ray Farmer. The 7-5 Browns are in the thick of a playoff hunt and will host the 8-4 Colts on Sunday. Indianapolis walloped the Redskins and Colt McCoy 49-27 Sunday.

"I don't know where I want to go, and it's certainly important,'' Pettine said. "We'll spend a lot of time on it. I'll lean on the people I trust to help make it."

Asked if he still believes in Hoyer, who's 7-5 this season but slumping over the past five games, he didn't answer directly. For his part, Hoyer said Monday "you don't get to 7-5 just lucking into it'' and feels he deserves the nod.

"As I said yesterday, I just felt we needed to make a change,'' he said. "We needed a spark. We had been listless for a good amount of time. Really two of the past three games on offense (we've) had those issues. I think the defenses had a lot to do with it.

"Atlanta, I do think that we were very confident. It was our highest yardage production output of the year, but interceptions were obviously a concern. I don't want to say that he was taken out because we lost confidence. It was a decision in-game to spark our team."

Pettine was asked what's holding him back from saying 'Hoyer's our guy.'

Browns' Brian Hoyer still confident he can get the job done Cleveland Browns quarterback Brian Hoyer says he is confident he can get the job done in the remaining four games as they make a run for the playoffs despite being benched for Johnny Manziel during the loss to the Bills. It is not yet known who will be the starter Sunday against the Colts.

"We believe that competition is a cornerstone of what we do,'' he said. "We do look at the body of work, but I think given the play recently at that position that it's time to discuss it....it's our normal procedure that we do week to week, and this week is no different."

Pettine admitted that this isn't the first time the staff has discussed switching to Manziel. Hoyer, 10-5 as a Brown overall, has faltered over the last three games, throwing one touchdown pass and six interceptions in that span and earning ratings of 61.2, 52.3 and 51.0. He's gone 1-for-9 in the redzone in those three outings, and his once top-10 rating has toppled to No. 27 at 79.9. He's mustered one touchdown pass in the last 15 quarters, and none in the last nine. He's last in the NFL in third-down passing.

What's more, the defense has gifted him with 17 takeaways over the past six games -- most in the NFL in that span -- and he's spun them into only three touchdowns. If not for some horrible clock management on the part of Falcons' coach Mike Smith, the Browns would likely be in the midst of a three-game tailspin with a 6-6 record and -- and virtually out of playoff contention.

"After Houston it certainly came up,'' said Pettine. "After some of the mistakes last week it came up. Just where we've been and the level of Brian's play, it's warranted discussion, but to me it's not just that one position. Anytime we're having a player not perform to our standards on a given week, it comes up for discussion.''

Pettine stressed that Manziel's involvement in a fight at his downtown apartment building in the wee hours before the Browns' flight to Atlanta the following day had nothing to do with the fact he "never considered'' using him against the Falcons, a game in which Hoyer threw three interceptions. Two of them were in the final five minutes, and Hoyer pulled out the 26-24 victory with a field goal in the final 44 seconds. He said they've addressed behavior with Manziel and everyone else on the team but that "we're not going to overdo it. As I said before, we're not going to micromanage our players outside of the building. At the same time, they know that there is a standard that they need to live up to. I think Johnny understands that certain positions should be held higher than others."He indicated that Manziel is ready for the challenge of this playoff run if called upon. After the Colts, the Browns host the first-place Bengals (8-3-1), then finish on the road at Carolina and against the 7-5 Ravens.

"His attitude and effort and energy and just overall quarterback play, it's shown steady improvement through the year,'' said Pettine. "We see a lot of him in practice week to week. We got a taste in the game of what he's capable of. We saw some of that in preseason. It's not like this is the first time we've seen him out there."He said Manziel had a couple of hiccups in his debut "but showed good energy, made some throws. I know he missed Travis (Benjamin) on the one boot. I thought the throw to (tight end Jim Dray) was in a pretty tight window, I thought Jim made a heck of a catch. I thought he was very decisive on the scramble for the touchdown.''

However, the Browns will have plenty to consider when they huddle up to make the decision over the next two days.

* Manziel would be making his starting debut against Andrew Luck and the Colts, who are first in the NFL with 31.8 points per game.

* He'd be without his starting tight end in Gary Barnidge (ribs) and clutch third-down receiver in Miles Austin, who remains hospitalized in Buffalo with a kidney injury.

* He might have to play with a third-string center in Ryan Seymour if Nick McDonald's ankle is still bothering him.

* In the hotly-contested AFC North race, every game will be a virtual elimination proposition.

But Pettine will throw anything out the window that doesn't answer his fundamental question.

"I've said it a million times, "Who gives us the best chance to win this weekend? Period,'' said Pettine. "For us involving the playoffs, we have to win and that's the bottom line. It's not like anything beyond that would influence the decision. It's that simple. It makes it easy when you look at it like that and shut out everything else."

He said he won't paint himself into a corner by saying the decision has to be his last one of the season. "We work very short term, and we're getting down to the end with four left,'' he said. "They're all huge, none more important than this one.''He also stressed that he's getting no pressure from the front office or from owner Jimmy Haslam to start Manziel. He also acknowledged that whole offense played poorly against Buffalo's fourth-ranked defense, but he ticked off Hoyer's deficiencies nonetheless.

"I felt we were stagnant and he had missed some reads and made some poor throws,'' said Pettine. "He wasn't having a very good day. I thought he rushed some throws. There were some instances throughout the game and it was just a cumulative thing. Just felt we needed to make a change."

Question is, will it be permanent?

Chiefs fans, players show support for Eric Berry

Eric Berry has a tough battle ahead of him, but he won't face it alone. The Kansas City Chiefs safety will miss the rest of the season after it was revealed last Monday he could have lymphoma. In a show of solidarity for their teammate, Chiefs players wore custom-made "Berry Strong" T-shirts before Sunday night's game against the Denver Broncos.

Joe Flacco Quietly Having Potential Career Year for Baltimore Ravens

Evan Habeeb USA TODAY Sports

Whether its because hes in a division that gets overlooked for not seeming to have a legitimate contender, or because the NFLs top quarterbacks are so utterly dominant, it seems as though Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flaccohasnt received a significant amount ofattention or recognition despite putting together a very solid season so far. Whatever the reason may be,Flacco is on pace to have one of his best seasons as a pro and he may get his team a playoff spot in the process.

Flaccos success this year has been night and day compared to last year. Through 11 games this season, Flacco has thrown 18 touchdowns and he threw for 19 all of last season. Additionally, hes on pace for 26 this year, which would surpass his career-high of 25 set in 2010. He has thrown eight interceptions this season and is on pace to throw under 12 this year. Last year, he threw 22. Additionally, Flacco is averaging over 250 pass yards a game and is just above pace to crack the 4,000-yard mark for the season, which would be the first time he has ever done so in his career. So how has Flacco been able to achieve this success so far this year?

Like most high-level players, Flacco has a solid team surrounding him, whichhelps with achieving success. Last season, Flacco was the most sacked quarterback in the NFL and the Ravens had the worst running game in the league. This year, however, those two factors have improved drastically. The Ravens have given up just 15 sacks all season, which is the fourth lowest amount in the NFL. Last season they gave up 48. Additionally, the Ravens have been able to implement a running game that is averaging over 130 yards a game.

These factors (amongst others) have given Flacco the ability to use his many targets effectively while keeping the amount of hits he takes to a minimum. He now has a run game that opponents have to respect which opens up play-action and passing options, and he also has time in the pocket thanks to the protection from his offensive line.

I dont think many would consider Flacco to be amongst the leagues most elite quarterbacks, however, he has been able to take a Ravens team that people didnt expect much from and leadthem to potentialplayoff contention with just a couple games remaining in the season. At 7-4 and tied for second place in theAFC North,Flacco and the Ravens have a chance at a playoff spot and perhaps even a division title.

Fan Poll who is better Rob Gronkowski or Jimmy Graham?

Slideshow: Who is better Gronk or Jimmy Graham?

This is a fan poll asking who is the better tight end Jimmy Graham or Rob Gronkowski. You can vote on Gronkowski or Graham without having to sign up for anything. Jimmy Graham and Rob Gronkowski are considered the best tight ends in the NFL but who is better?

Jimmy Graham is big at 6ft 7 and 260 pounds but he is a more athletic finesse type of tight end than Rob Gronkowski is. Graham actually plays wide receiver a lot and his speed and jumping ability causes huge mismatches for the opponents of the Saints.

In 73 NFL Games Jimmy Graham has caught 366 passes for 4,533 yards and 50 receiving touchdowns. Graham is easily one of the best end zone targets in the NFL The questions is whether or not Jimmy Graham is better than Gronk?

Rob Gronkowski is big too at 6ft 5 and 265 pounds. Gronk has deceptive speed but is more of a plodder than an athlete like Jimmy Graham. Both Gronkowski and Graham have had problems staying healthy but are beasts when they play their A game.

In 61 NFL games Rob Gronkowski has 284 catches for 4,067 yards and 51 touchdown receptions. Gronk is more of a bull his way into the end zone guy rather than the leaper Jimmy Graham is. Who is better? Please vote here.
