Mary Landrieu defeat widens party, racial divide in the South

Mary Landrieus thumping in a Louisiana run-off election Saturday has many lessons for Democrats, none of them happy.

It strengthens Republicans grip on the US Senate, increasing their majority to 54 seats nine more than they had before last months mid-term election which also gives them a better hand in 2016 when more GOP senators up for reelection will be vulnerable (as were Democrats this year).

Saturdays voting also boosted the GOPs grip on the US House to at least 246 seats. As the AP points out, this gives Republicans a commanding majority that matches the party's post-World War II high during Democratic President Harry S. Truman's administration.

The election also confirms the extreme difficulty Ds now have in winning (or holding on to) elected positions in the South.

Heres a stark snapshot from Politico: In 1962, every senator and an overwhelming majority of House members from the South was a Democrat. Next year, Democrats will control 39 of 149 Southern congressional seats, fewer than at any time since Reconstruction. The GOP won each of the seven governors races in the South this year as well, padding majorities in state legislatures across the region.

It matters not that Sen. Landrieu aligned herself with Republicans on a key issue the Keystone XL pipeline. Her support of Obama administration programs especially the Affordable Care Act more than outweighed that. Much more.

Landrieus defeat at the hands of US Rep. Bill Cassidyconfirms the widening racial divide in the South regarding party affiliation and elections.

During Louisianas open primary vote last month, Landrieus 42 percent tally (which forced the run-off for the three-term incumbent) included just 18 percent of the white vote, according to exit polls. Here too, Obama weighed down Landrieus increasingly desperate attempt to hold on to her Senate seat: 73 percent of white voters polled in November said they strongly disapproved of Obama.

US House delegations across nine states stretching from the Carolinas to Texas are divided almost entirely by race, with white Republicans representing majority-white districts, while majority non-white districts are represented by black or Hispanic Democrats, according to the AP.

In the end, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee cut its losses, canceling TV ads it had scheduled for Landrieu. With outside help from groups like American Crossroads, Freedom Partners, and the National Rifle Association, Rep. Cassidy outspent Landrieu in the run-off.

Campaigning for Cassidy were Sens. Rand Paul and Marco Rubio, former Sen. Rick Santorum, neurologist Ben Carson, and Sen.-elect Joni Ernst. Sen. Ted Cruz and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush helped raise campaign cash.

In the end, it wasnt close. Cassidy beat Landrieu 56-44 percent. Early voting turnout was overwhelmingly white and Republican. Stats blog FiveThirtyEight put her chance of losing at 99.8 percent.

Politico accurately summed up Saturdays election in Louisiana (and its broader import) in just five words: Dems' final insult: Landrieu crushed.

Landrieu's defeat is a blow for one of Louisiana's most famous political families, leaving her brother, New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu, to carry the banner.

SEC Championship draws big crowds

Tens of thousands of college football fans rolled into Atlanta for the SEC Championship Game Saturday at the Georgia Dome. The conference title matchup pits No. 1-ranked Alabama against No. 14-ranked Missouri. The 4 p.m. game is sold out with an expected attendance of 74,000 fans."Obviously this is one of the biggest annual events we host here at the Georgia Dome. All of the parking we have with the Georgia World Congress Center Authority is sold out online already. So if you don't have one in your hand already, the best advice is to walk from the hotel district or take MARTA," said Georgia Dome spokesman Jason Kirksy before the game.

The Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau predicts the economic impact from the championship game will exceed $39 million. Channel 2's Tom Regan visited some of the souvenir merchandise vendors who set up tents near Centennial Olympic Park."I think we're going to do very good. We have received a lot of Missouri fans yesterday and today," said vendor Lynette Hutcherson Friday. One of those visitors said his group will take in other attractions besides the game. "We're going to do the VIP tour over at the CNN Center later today, and we're also going to be at the the World of Coca-Cola tour afterward," said Missouri fan Steve Gold.Atlanta police had additional officers on hand to control the crowds. The director of SEC ticket sales advised the public to be wary of counterfeit tickets.

"We've always had a good many counterfeits in the past years, so we just want to alert fans to be cautious," said SEC director of ticketing Jim Sullivan.Sullivan showed Regan the special embossed features on championship tickets that makes them difficult to duplicate."The white lettering on the ticket is raised. If you rub your finger over it, you can tell it's raised. And another way, of course, is the hologram in the foil. If you tilt the ticket, you're going to see SEC logos appear and disappear," said Sullivan.A ticket validation window was open at the Georgia Dome where fans can have tickets authenticated prior to the game.

Pearl Harbor survivor brings Vikings fans to their feet

Pearl Harbor survivor Richard Thill of St. Paul waves to the crowd of 52,152 who rose to their feet at the Vikings-Jets game and cheered in unison, USA! USA!

Richard Thill survived Pearl Harbor and waited 73 years for an ovation many of his comrades would never hear. So a stubbornly long New York Jets drive and icy wind at TCF Bank Stadium could not ruin his moment.

The Vikings salute military veterans during the first television timeout of the second quarter each home game. Thill was a special honoree Sunday, Dec. 7 -- a solemn anniversary in U.S. history, one he hopes never fades from memory.

The 91-year-old St. Paul native was introduced with a video tribute that included an interview and familiar black-and-white newsreels that showed the destruction caused by the Japanese surprise attack.

With the aid of a walker, Thill stood in the east end zone, smiled broadly and waved to the crowd of 52,152, which rose to its feet and cheered in unison -- "USA! USA!"

"That was outstanding, to say the least," Thill said later.

Earlier Sunday, Thill was the guest of honor at a Pearl Harbor Remembrance Ceremony at the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs hosted by the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association and the Fort Snelling National Cemetery Memorial Rifle Squad.

Mike McElhiney, legislative director for the veterans affairs department, spoke of how stories about the attack and the war affected his life and military career.

"Although I am younger than most people in this room, it still resonates with me," McElhiney said.

After the ceremony, Thill said talking about the attack still made him emotional.

"If I talk about it, I'll cry," he said. "I pray for those who were lost, I still do."

Thill is president and chaplain of the Minnesota chapter of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association. There once were three chapters with 500 survivors. Thill and his treasurer are the last in the state.

"It's kind of lonesome," he said. "They've all died just about.

"

Thill was 17 when he joined the Naval Reserve and was stationed in Hawaii in January 1941, earning $21 per month. He was a communications officer on the destroyer, USS Ward, which was patrolling the front of the harbor the morning of the attack.

His ship sank a Japanese mini-submarine before the air raid commenced, a coordinated attack that killed almost 2,400 Americans and drew the United States into World War II.

Shots fired from the USS Ward are considered the first by the U.S. in World War II. The ship's gun now sits on the grounds of the veterans affairs building.

Thill said his base was ill-equipped to counterattack the fighter planes that dove to about 50 feet above the water before firing their ammunition and dropping bombs.

"You could see two planes side-by-side coming in. We had a lot of old World War I machine guns that would jam up all the time. We were behind the times," he said.

Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day at TCF Bank Stadium included a B-25 flyover carrying World War II veterans Roger Rand of North Oaks, Minn., Jim Carroll of Bloomington and former Vikings coach Bud Grant.

"I couldn't see anything," Grant said about his quick flight. "Those are for dropping bombs, not flying passengers."

Thill served five years in the Navy before returning to St. Paul and taking a job as a lineman at Northern States Power Co. He survived Pearl Harbor without a scratch but lost parts of three fingers on his right hand after being electrocuted.

Thill still speaks to elementary and high school history students whenever he can about his experiences on Dec. 7, 1941, the worst attack on U.S. soil until 9/11.

Thill was asked how he has survived the subsequent 73 years.

"I don't smoke, but I drink beer. That's what keeps me going," he said.

Jana Duggar, Tim Tebow Dating? Rep For Former NFL Star Responds To '19 ...

Jana Duggar is still single according to Tim Tebows rep. Despite rumors of a romance between the 19 Kids and Counting star and the former NFL quarterback, the pair is reportedly not courting because theyve never even interacted.

Tim and Jana Duggar have never even met, a rep for the 27-year-old athlete told Us Weekly magazine.

So, how did speculation of a budding romance start? Parents Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar posted a photo of them alongside Tim Tebows mother, Pam Tebow, on the Duggar familys official Facebook page.

We enjoyed hearing Pam Tebow (Tims mom) share tonight at the Loving Choices crisis pregnancy center banquet! the pair wrote in the caption photo. A great lady and a great cause!

According to Star magazine, the Duggars met Pam Tebow at a fundraiser for Loving Choices Pregnancy Centers in Springdale, Ark. On Nov. 11. Pam had been the keynote speaker at the event, but the meet up with the Duggars wasnt just business. The magazine reports that Pam visited the TLC reality TV family at their Tonitown, Ark. home the following day.

The 19 Kids and Counting fan base have been in full shipping mode for 24-year-old Jana Duggar, Jim Bob and Michelle Duggars eldest daughter, ever since two of their other daughters wed this year. Jill, 23, married Derick Dillard in June, and Jessa, 22, married Ben Seewald in November.

Prior to Jesss nuptials, rumors sparked that Jana was unable to date due to obligations to help the family. An insider told Radar Online that Jim Bob and Michelle would leave their children at home and put Jana in charge while they go out on date nights.

[Jana] does it with a smile, but its sad, a source explained. Its not like she ever gets a date night!

Even Janas twin, John David Duggar, is reportedly in the early stages of relationship. The second oldest son in the family was photographed with an unidentified female last month, leading fans to speculate that he has begun to court.

Although Tim Tebow is said to not be dating the single Duggar, 19 Kids and counting viewers are in full support of a relationship. Both devout Christians with strict dating viewers, fans believe that the pair would make a great couple and allegedly so does the Duggar patriarch.

Jim Bob is no dummy, a source told Star magazine of the courting potential. Tim would be a perfect addition to the family and a feather in his cap. Can you imagine the press attention a Tim-Jana wedding would get?

How does NJIT beat Michigan?

All hail the pocket protector brigade!

Two days after the University of the Sciences beat Drexel in Philadelphia, one day after Yale topped Connecticut in Storrs, New Jersey Institute of Technology might have pulled off the biggest shocker since Chaminade topped Ralph Sampson and Virginia more than 30 years ago.

The Highlanders topped No. 17 Michigan 72-70 -- in Ann Arbor.

Forget this being NJIT's first win against a ranked opponent; its the first time the school has played a top 25 program.

The school, which is billed as among the best in the fields of solar research, nanotechnology, resilient design and tissue engineering, became a full-fledged Division I member in 2006.

Since then, it had amassed all of 76 wins heading into Crisler Arena.

From February 2007 to January 2009, NJIT lost every single game it played, a 51-game record-setting streak of futility.

So how does this happen? How does Michigan, a team that gave Villanova all it could handle two weeks ago, that just topped Syracuse on Tuesday night, that came into the game as a 24.5 point favorite, fall to a team that already lost twice this year to UMass-Lowell?

The same way these things usually happen: a lazy and lousy effort on the part of the favored team, and an inspired game from the underdog.

Truth is, Michigan didnt deserve to win this game.

The Wolverines played ol' defense, especially on the perimeter. NJIT shot 58.7 percent from the floor and a blistering 64.7 percent from the arc.

They let Damon Lynn hit the winner and drain six 3-pointers.

Why, you ask, is that such an offense? Well, last season Lynn drained 107 treys. That ranked him fourth in the nation. This season, he had already hit 20 in the four games before Michigan.

Maybe step out on him?

Offensively, take away Caris LeVert and his 32 points, Michigan was 12-of-36 from the floor, 5-of-16 from the arc.

But really, blame human nature. Coaches and players all like to say they take every game one game at a time, and blah, blah, blah.

Lets be serious. Having just come off the big game against Syracuse and with a date against Arizona slated for next week, there is no way the Wolverines gave NJIT the same sort of attention. There are 350 teams playing Division I basketball. Even with all of the conference reshuffling, only one is still left out in the cold, orphaned with no league, and thats NJIT.

By the time Michigan realized it was time to get it in gear, it was too late.

The upset was in the books, and the rise of the pocket protector brigade continued.
