Cubs legend Ernie Banks died of heart attack

The lawyer for the family of Chicago Cubs great Ernie Banks said Sunday that the legendary player died Friday after suffering a heart attack, just a week short of his 84th birthday.

A public service for Banks likely will be Wednesday at Daley Plaza, sources said.

Banks passed away Friday at 83 after a storied 19-year playing career and 40-plus years as an ambassador for baseball and the city of Chicago. At a news conference Sunday, his widow, Liz, spoke briefly and introduced family attorney Mark Bogen, who read a short statement and declined to take questions.

Known worldwide as "Mr. Cub," Banks became the Cubs first African-American player on Sept. 17, 1953, and went on to become a two-time National League Most Valuable Player. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1977. In 2013, he received a Presidential Medal of Freedom in recognition of his goodwill. At the time, he equated the medal to the Nobel Peace Prize.

Bogen praised Banks for his contributions inside and outside of baseball, including support for the military, gay rights, kids with disabilities and numerous charities.

"Ernie Banks was a wonderful husband, a great father and grandfather," Bogen said.

"One of his favorite quotes was, 'Life is a song. Sing it. Life is a game. Play it. Life is a challenge. Meet it. Life is a dream. Realize it.'"

The family also started a Facebook page called Ernie Banks Remembered.

"He loved people and wanted to hear their stories," Bogen said.

The statue of Banks that was removed last fall from outside Wrigley Field has returned to Chicago to be used for the public memorial, said Brent Harris, proprietor of the Kalamazoo shop where the statue was being refurbished. New bolts were added in order for the statue to be mounted in Daley Plaza this week from Wednesday morning through Saturday. In 2008, Banks became the first player in Cubs history to be honored with a statue at Wrigley.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel called Banks a friend who was a great ambassador for the city.

"We are bringing Ernie's statue to Daley Plaza to honor not just one of the best ballplayers of all time, but a great man who made our city proud from the day we first met him in 1953," Emanuel said.

Tom Ricketts, chairman of the Cubs, said Banks loved his fans as much as they loved him.

"We couldn't think of a better way to honor Ernie than to allow those fans a way to pay their final respects to this great man," Ricketts said.

Klay Thompson's teammates can't believe he scored 37 points in a single quarter

Golden State Warriors shooting guardKlay Thompson made NBA history on Friday night, scoring a record-breaking 37 points in a single quarter against the Sacramento Kings. Fans obviously could barely believe what was happening as they watched the score go from 60-60 to 97-73, but what about Thompsons teammates? It turns out they were equally in shock, judging from their postgame reactions, tweets and Instagram posts.

Draymond Green, who managed to sneak in a layup between Thompsons seemingly nonstop jump shots and three-pointers, compared Thompsons effort to the video game NBA 2K15. Or, well, at least he tried to.

You dont get that hot in 2K. Them video games are real now. And that wasnt real. You cant do that in a video game! Green said before pausing, laughing and adding, I dont understand what you all want me to say! Yall are making me look like I dont know how to talk to the media at all right now. I honestly dont know what to tell yall right now.

Stephen Curry took a more humorous approach on Instagram.

The photo is captioned: Still in shock! This guy @klaythompson was unreal tonight! 37! 37! 37! If hes not an All-Star next Thursday..

Harrison Barnes posted a video, showing the team dumping some celebratory cooler water on Thompson.

Here are a few other teammate reactions:

Thompson also had something to say.

2015 Pro Bowl: What you need to know about the Arizona Cardinals players ...

GLENDALE, AZ - Four athletes will represent the Arizona Cardinals at the 2015 NFL Pro Bowl in Glendale on Sunday and as they have all season, theyll all play on the same side.

All four men each of whom plays on the defensive side of the ball were selected to Team Cris Carter in the Pro Bowl Draft conducted earlier this week to compete against Team Michael Irvin

Heres what you need to know about each of these outstanding Cardinals before the Pro Bowl kicks off Sunday at 6 p.m. at University of Phoenix Stadium:

Patrick Peterson (fourth appearance): Regarded as one of the leagues best cornerbacks, Peterson has been a Pro Bowler in each of his first four NFL seasons. He was crucial to the Arizona Cardinals 31-14 comeback victory over the St. Louis Rams on Nov. 9, intercepting two passes in the fourth quarter and returning the second one for a touchdown to seal the victory.

Peterson had his ups and downs in 2014 he held star wide receiver Dez Bryant without a catch for most of the Cardinals 28-17 win over the Dallas Cowboys on Nov. 2, but he was dominated by WR Julio Jones, who had nearly 200 yards in the Atlanta Falcons 29-18 win over the Cards on Nov. 30. At the Pro Bowl, Peterson said hes looking forward to covering rookie sensation Odell Beckham, Jr., who had 1,305 yards and 12 TDs for the New York Giants this season.

Antonio Cromartie (fourth appearance): Cromartie, who the Cardinals signed to a one-year contract before the 2014 season began, was named to the Pro Bowl last weekend in place of CB Richard Sherman, whose Seattle Seahawks will compete in next weeks Super Bowl.

Cromartie complemented Peterson by intercepting three passes of his own in the regular season, including two in a 24-20 win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Oct. 26. The nine-year pro added a fourth INT in Arizonas playoff loss at the Carolina Panthers. Cromarties 31 career INTs are tied for the eighth most among active NFL players.

But Sunday may be the last time Cromartie takes the field as a member of the Cardinals, as hes set to become a free agent at the end of the season. He said hed like to return to the Cards next season but will also explore other options.

Calais Campbell (first appearance): Campbells Pro Bowl selection was long overdue. The defensive end, who was selected by the Cardinals in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft, had seven sacks this season despite missing two games with an knee injury. His 43.5 career sacks are the sixth most in franchise history.

Campbell set a personal single-game record by recording three sacks in a 19-3 loss at the Seahawks on Nov. 23. The 6-foot-8, 300-pounder is one of the Cardinals most likeable players, as hes active in charities and community events, and hes one of the teams most reliable and consistent athletes, notching at least 58 total tackles and 6.5 sacks in each of his last five seasons.

Justin Bethel (second appearance): The third-year cornerback was invited to his second consecutive Pro Bowl because of his impact on special teams. Bethel, who was a steal for the Cardinals in the sixth round of the 2012 NFL Draft, is one of the leagues best in kickoff and punt coverage, and he was named the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week on Nov. 5 for his blocked field goal in Arizonas win over the Cowboys.

Bethel had two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery in the 2014 season, and he has three blocked field goals in his last two seasons. He also had his most productive NFL season on defense in 2014, recording a career-high 25 tackles, including 21 solo tackles.

A Flight Attendant Explains How SkyMall Didn't Make Its Money From Its Catalog

Screenshot from skymall.com

I dont think SkyMall really cared about selling you all of that stuff.

Jeff Friedrich is an associate editor at Slate.

I never received a SkyMall memo or went to a Skymall training hour. In the three years I spent working as a flight attendant on Delta Airlines regional flights from 2011 through 2013, no one ever told me how to help customers who wanted to make a SkyMall purchase. In the rare instance in which a passenger asked, I said something like, I think you need to go online or something.

I was the closest thing SkyMall could have had to a sales associate, and I knew nothing about the company. This seemed to me like no way to run a business thats focused on direct retailing. And perhaps it wasnt, particularly in light of Fridays news that SkyMall and its parent company Xhibit Corp. had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Several bogeyman feature in the story of SkyMalls decline, according to Xhibits filing: More planes with Wi-Fi. More passengers with electronic devices. Amazon and eBay. The direct marketing retail industry is crowded, rapidly evolving and intensely competitive, said chief financial officer Scott Wiley in the filing.

But this makes it sound like the SkyMall catalog was the problem, when the truth is that SkyMall (the business) had long since moved on from SkyMall (the catalog). In other words, Skymall had ceased to even be a direct retailing company.

According to Xhibits annual report from 2013, the year it acquired SkyMall, 66 percent of SkyMalls consolidated revenue came from its loyalty business, mainly from 3 partners: Caesars Entertainment, Capital One, and Marriott Rewards. Skymall wasnt making most of its money from its catalogs. By 2013, it earned more money by acting as a middle man for credit card companies and other partners: When a credit card holder spends enough money on a card, these reward programs allow you to redeem reward points for magazine subscriptions, cheap electronics, and other junk. SkyMall handled the fulfillment.

The proximate cause of Skymalls bankruptcy? Xhibit Corp. is a strange, spammy-seeming company with a history of financial losses. In September 2014, it sold the loyalty business for reasons I cant easily ascertain from its financial documents. The company used the proceeds to pay down debt.

SkyMall began its loyalty business in 1999.From a 2001 filing by SkyMall, Inc, we know that the loyalty business accounted for no more than 15 percent of SkyMall's revenue in 2000.We dont know exactly what happened to SkyMall from 2001 through 2013, a period during which it was privately held. But whats happened since the millennium, it seems, is that SkyMall depended less and less on the revenue it made from the catalogs in your seatback, and more and more on revenue from its credit card partnerships.

Maybe that explains why no one trained me to support your SkyMall purchase.

What will Lakers look like when Kobe Bryant returns from injury?

Kobe Bryant had played what will probably be the last game of this season, and perhaps the last of his illustrious career, but once again showed how he has always been one to go out on his own ultra-defiant terms. Bryant was forced to leave in the fourth quarter of the Los Angeles Lakers 96-90 loss to the New Orleans Pelicans after he suffered a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder while attempting a dunk. Plans to finish out as a lefty werent working out very well, so he finally relented.

After having the shoulder examined and treated for nearly 30 minutes, Bryant wasnt going to look the part of a beaten man. And he had probably sharpened his acting skills earlier in the day while filming a scene at Smoothie King Center for an upcoming movie starring Will Farrell and Mark Wahlberg.

When reporters were allowed in the locker room after a lengthy delay, Bryant didnt emerge from the training room with his shoulder covered in ice, but rather wearing a sportcoat and brown leather Louis Vuitton backpack with purple, furry accents and shoulder straps yes, over his b*m right shoulder. Either masking the pain of the harsh reality that a third straight season was going to end in injury or unaware of its severity, Bryant said the shoulder would require him to ice a little bit, so that he could get ready to play Friday in San Antonio.

I feel okay, Bryant said. I feel fine.

Bryant has been the obstinatesort from the time he entered the league as an 18-year-old determined to be recognized sooner or later as the best in the game, unwilling to accept that anyone was better or that he should have to always defer to Shaquille ONeal.

What would a serious shoulder injury mean to him? Kobe thought out loud. He played through a torn labrum before, even averaged 40.6 points per game with the ailment in February 2003. He confronted countless other knick-knack injuries that would derail others. And in the previous two years, Bryants body has broken down but created a more resilient spirit; one that shot two free throws on a ruptured Achilles tendon and played the remainder of a game with broken bone in his left knee.

The Lakers announced that Bryant met with team physician Dr. Steve Lombardo, who discussed the possibility of surgery. But Bryant plans to delay any decision until meeting with Dr. Neal ElAttrache.

Bryant had recently begun sitting out games and adhering to a 32-minute playing time restriction to preserve his body. Inevitably, the 55,415 regular season and playoff minutes that he has accumulated over his 19-year career came back to haunt him as Bryant sustained his latest injury from simply dunking with two hands, not some violent collision.

The injury is terrible news for the 36-year-old Bryant, who is averaging team highs of 22.3 points and 5.6 assists in a season in which he passed Michael Jordan for third place on the all-time career scoring list and was elected to his 17th all-star game. But Bryant displayed a sense of humor about the setback on Twitter by jokingly telling fans, This is what happens when I pass too much!

The Lakers (12-31) have the second-worst record in the Western Conference and have gone 2-6 without Bryant, including a win over league-leading Golden State. Despite his big scoring games, Bryant is shooting a career-low 37.3 percent from the field and the Lakers have been significantly worse with him on the floor. They are 14 points per 100 possessions better with Bryant off the court, which is the second-worst net efficiency differential for players with at least 1,000 minutes played. Only teammate Jordan Hill is worse.

Coach Byron Scott had discussed the possibility of shutting down Bryant before the season ended and expressed some regret Friday for giving him a heavy load earlier in the season; Bryant averaged 37.1 minutes a game in November before taking a step back last month. But the Lakers have been hit with a rash of injuries this season, with Steve Nash, rookie Julius Randle and Xavier Henry also going with the season-ending variety.

The Lakers have to secure a spot in the top five of the NBA draft lottery to keep a draft pick that would otherwise go to Phoenix, so losing big is probably the desired option for the franchise. But Bryant who is owed $25 million next season, the final year of his contract cant concern himself with a developing draft pick when he would have one last shot to match Jordan with a sixth championship ring. For that to happen, the Lakers would need to acquire a franchise-altering player in free agency or a trade. Given his health problems in recent years and the Lakers inability to retain Dwight Howard in 2013 or to retain Pau Gasol or attract Carmelo Anthony or LeBron James last summer, Bryant was asked Wednesday why a big name star should trust what direction the franchise is taking. Bryant said the Lakers General Manager Mitch Kupchaks ability to make opportunistic deals in the past should be taken into account.

Its phenomenal, so much so that the league had to protest a trade that he made, Bryant said, referring to the vetoed Chris Paul deal in 2011. He pulled that off and saved money? What other GM could pull that off? Youve kind of got to lean on the track record of the front office and the decisions that they make. He makes really solid ones.

Bryant admitted recently that he has contemplated retiring after this season but it would be hard to imagine that he would leave the game on such a our note with such a sour team. If he decides to to put his body through yet another grueling rehabilitation he described his last recovery period as worse than climbing Mount Everest the Lakers team that he returns to will be much different. And it will need to be much better to make the comeback worthwhile.

Only Nick Young, Ryan Kelly and Randle are signed to guaranteed deals next season and this summers free agent class will feature the likes of Marc Gasol, LaMarcus Aldridge and Rajon Rondo, who are currently with teams better positioned to compete. Greg Monroe and Goran Dragic are possibilities and Kevin Love might become available if the situation in Cleveland doesnt work out.

If Bryant decides to walk away, he could assist the Lakers and let them use the stretch provision and possibly spread his contract out to $5 million per season over the next five years to give the Lakers more salary cap room to start rebuilding without him. But Bryant was adamant Wednesday that h**l be heavily involved in assisting with the recruiting efforts.

Its a pretty simple message. Its the best organization in the world, best brand in the world, Bryant said of the Lakers. We win championships. Thats what we do. It would be much more than Xs and Os and style of play, things of that nature. Theres no place like winning in Los Angeles, man.

And time will tell if Bryant has exhausted his chances to continue.

Melissa Benoist of 'Glee' will play Supergirl

Melissa Benoist is your new Supergirl.

Right. I think she really was the last actor who hasn't worn a cape yet.

The "Whiplash" and "Glee" actress will star as Superman's equally-talented cousin in a new series on CBS. Benoist has also appeared in "The Good Wife," according to the Huffington Post.

Benoist will portray Kara Zor-El, who also happened to escape Krypton's destruction and ended up an orphan on Earth. She also -- stop me if you'd heard this before -- grew up with adoptive parents, who urged her to keep her powers secret. Therefore she wears a disguise that includes glasses. And she also happens to be related to Superman.

I wonder if she gets along with Lex Luthor's cousin.

The series will chronicle what happens after a disaster forces Zor-El to use her powers.

Helen Slater played Supergirl in the very forgettable 1984 film of the same name ("Supergirl," not "Forgettable 1984 Film.")

Why Hope Solo got suspended over husband Jerramy Stevens's DUI arrest

After dodging repercussions earlier this month when a judge dismissed a domestic assault case against her, U.S. goalkeeper Hope Solo found herself making headlines this week in connection with a drunken driving incident involving her husband, ex-NFL player Jerramy Stevens. This incident proved to be enough to goad the U.S. Soccer Federation to suspend Solo from the U.S. Womens National Team for 30 days.

During our current national team camp, Hope made a poor decision that has resulted in a negative impact on U.S. Soccer and her teammates, U.S. Coach Jill Ellis said in a statement posted to USSFs official Web site on Wednesday. We feel at this time it is best for her to step away from the team.

The incident in question occurred early Monday morning, when Solo and her husband were pulled over by police in Manhattan Beach, Calif. Stevens was arrested and charged with driving under the influence; Solo, who was reportedly also drunk and belligerent, was not arrested, but she reportedly still played enough of a role in the incident to raise eyebrows at the USSF.

Two details that may make this incident more unacceptable than previous problemsinclude: 1) the fact that Monday nights altercationoccurred while Solo was attending the current national training camp, and 2) a TMZ report that alleges Stevens was driving a U.S. Soccer official team van at the time of his arrest.

Were told soccer officials were especially upset that Hope allowed her husband to drive the team van potentially leaving the team liable had there been an accident, TMZ reports.

Solo, 33, and Stevens, 35, formerly of the Seattle Seahawks and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, have a tumultuous past. The couple married in November 2012, shortly after he was arrested on suspicion of assaulting Solo, but charges were never brought because there was insufficient evidence. Stevens was arrested again at his Tampa, Fla., home in 2012 for violating his probation in connection with a marijuana possession charge from October 2010.

Solos suspension will cause her to miss two games with Team USA, one against France on Feb. 8 and one against England on Feb. 13. She was also released from the remainder of training camp.

Solo put out a statement via Twitter on the suspension on Wednesday evening, noting she both accepts and respects USSFs decision. She also apologized for disappointing my teammates, coaches and the Federation who have always supported me.

I think its best for me to take a break, decompress from the stress of the last several months and come back mentally and physically ready to positively contribute to the team, she said.

While USSF confirms Solo, who has played on two Olympic gold-medal winning teams, will be eligible for reinstatement, the team did not guarantee her return. The decision will come only after review and approval by USSF and Ellis, the USSF said on its Web site.

Meanwhile, some voices in the sports community wonder if Solos become too much of a liability. New York Daily News sports columnist Filip Bondy.

What is left unsaid now is that Solos self-destructive behavior has become a great concern to everyone who knows her including teammates, U.S. officials and coaches, Bondy writes. They are trying to stand by her again now, though she is making it more difficult by the day. U.S. Soccer just hopes it can get her to Winnipeg on June 8 for the World Cup opener against Australia, and that her husband wont be driving the van.
