Attorney: Video exists of 'Suge' Knight in deadly run-in

As Marion "Suge" Knight sat jailed on suspicion of murder, dueling narratives cast him as attacker and victim in the hip-hop music mogul's latest and most serious run-in with the law.

Sheriff's deputies said he hit and killed a man with his pickup truck, injured another and then fled. His lawyer said he was an innocent victim who accidentally ran over his friend and the other man as he tried to escape an attack.

He turned himself in and was booked on Friday.

A better understanding about what happened Thursday afternoon may be found in a video that Knight's attorney said is in "police custody." Defense attorney James Blatt said he'll likely see it Monday or Tuesday, and he was confident it would vindicate his client who was being held in lieu of $2 million bail, on Saturday.

The incident was the latest in a long line of brushes with death and the law for the 49-year-old founder of Death Row Records, one of the genre's leading labels.

Knight started the label that helped solidify West Coast rap with Dr. Dre, who had been a member of the legendary group N.W.A. The label also launched the career of Snoop Dogg and had Tupac Shakur in the last months of his life.

The fatal run-in occurred a short while after Knight was told by deputies to leave a film location where he had argued with someone, authorities said.

The cast and crew were taking a break from filming a promotional video for the biopic "Straight Outta Compton," about the rise of N.W.A., according to a person familiar with the project who was not authorized to speak about it publicly and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The argument resumed and escalated a short while later at a fast-food restaurant about two miles away, with Knight and the man exchanging punches through his open window. Knight then struck the man and a friend with his vehicle and fled, said sheriff's Lt. John Corina.

Terry Carter, 55, Knight's friend who authorities do not believe was involved in the altercation, died at a hospital, Corina said. The other man was identified by his manager as Cle "Bone" Sloan, 51, an actor and film consultant. He was hospitalized in stable condition, said manager Jermaine Shelton.

Corina said Knight backed up his pickup truck and knocked Sloan down.

"Then he puts the truck in drive, drives forward, running over him, and then keeps going forward and keeps on driving, and runs over Carter, who is standing in the parking lot, and keeps on going after that," Corina said.

He said witnesses told investigators it looked like an intentional act.

Defense attorney Blatt said Knight was called to Tam's Burgers in Compton for a meeting and was attacked by four people, including Sloan, as he slowed his truck. The men beat him through his window and threatened to kill him.

Corina said evidence thus far disputed Blatt's account, saying only one man exchanged blows with Knight through the window before he got run over.

The fatal run-in comes less than six months after Knight was shot six times at a West Hollywood nightclub in August the second shooting he's survived. No arrests have been made.

Knight punched the gas and fled in fear, Blatt said. He had no idea he hit two men. Corina said that claim is hard to believe.

Knight surrendered early Friday and was booked on suspicion of murder.

At 6-foot-4 and weighing 325 pounds, Knight's reputation as an imposing figure is credited, in part, with helping create Death Row Records when he strong-armed another label to release Dr. Dre from his contract, said Chuck Creekmur, CEO of allhiphop.com.

"You can't separate Suge from the music that came out of Death Row Records," Creekmur said. "He's linked forever to a really, really great musical period of time. And that would be linked to a really horrific period when we lost several of our brightest stars."

Knight was at the center of one of the most notorious rap conflicts of the 1990s, pitting rappers Tupac Shakur against Biggie Smalls in an East Coast versus West Coast rivalry.

Knight was sent to prison for nearly five years for badly beating a rival with Shakur at a Las Vegas hotel, just hours before Shakur was fatally shot while riding in Knight's car just east of the Strip.

Smalls, whose real name was Chris Wallace, was shot to death in a similar attack six months later.

Knight and Dre later had a falling out and Dre left. The record company eventually declared bankruptcy and was auctioned off.

Dr. Dre and Ice Cube, another former N.W.A. member, were at the film location Thursday, but they didn't see Knight, according to the person who spoke on condition of anonymity. Filming was shut down for the day and not resumed Friday.

The history of Knight's run-ins with the law goes back more than 20 years.

In November, Knight pleaded not guilty to a robbery charge filed after a celebrity photographer accused him of stealing her camera in Beverly Hills. Because of prior convictions, he could face up to 30 years in prison.

Despite its racy premise, The Loft is too sloppy to be shocking

Besides being an early contender for the worst date movie of 2015, The Loft is a film that cant decide what it wants. Its a male fantasy, and a cautionary tale. Its sleazy in concept, and timid in execution. It punishes its protagonists for their transgressions, then lets them off the hook. And, perhaps most maddeningly, it insists on painting those protagonists as pretty okay guys, deep down, even as their behavior repeatedly challenges that conclusion. (For some of the characters, anywaydespite The Lofts many attempts at red herrings, the observant viewer could predict the final outcome simply by who gets a humanizing subplot and who doesnt.)

Based on a Belgian thriller, The Loft centers around a group of five 1-percent types who share a loft reserved for entertaining their invariably blonde, thrillingly unstable mistresses, girlfriends, and one-night stands. (The wives, on the other hand, are all brunette, sour-faced buzzkills.) Then a sexy young blonde turns up dead, n***d, and handcuffed to the bed, with a Latin phrase smeared in blood on the headboard. Party over, bro.

The Loft is enamored with hidden agendas, plot twists, expository speeches about those plot twists, and shocking revelations in general. Its also enamored of sleek modern design, and everything from the crash pad itself to a police interrogation room looks like it was shot on the set of an Ikea catalog. If only the movie was as enamored with filling its plot holes. (It features an LAPD whose autopsies apparently do not include toxicology reports, for starters.) Or with dialogue. Everyone makes an unintentionally hilarious statement at some point, although the really leaden ones are reserved for the mistress characters. These lines are all delivered straight, with the exception of those uttered by Modern Familys Eric Stonestreet, who gives an over-the-top performance as lecherous drunk Marty.

Besides privilege, these men reek of duplicity. One moment Marty is telling his friend Vincent (Karl Urban) not to talk to a woman because fat chicks scare the good-looking chicks away, and the next hes devastated because his wife left him for having s*x with that fat chick. One moment Chris (James Marsden) is a lovesick puppy dog who just wants to do right by heartless blonde Anne (Rachael Taylor); the next hes willingly participating in a frame-up. But what makes these characters so unlikable isnt that theyre unethical. Gripping films can and have been made about terrible people. The problem is that these guysand this movieare doing such a terrible job of being terrible.

What Should We Expect From Katy Perry's Super Bowl Halftime Special?

Photo: Maya Robinson and Photos by Getty

We don't know about you, but we'll be watching the Super Bowl on mute (well, except for the commercials) up until it's time for the Halftime Special. That's when Katy Perry will take the arena stage to do her best career-encompassing performance for an audience of over 100 million people. What will she do? Stick to the typical Katy Perry stuff? Go off-book? Will she focus on singing or dancing? Will she throw shade? Will she sing "Firework"? (That last one, for sure.) We have a slew of educated guesses below.

1. Lenny Kravitz. This isnt an assumption; its reality. It has been confirmed that Lenny will appear during Katy Perrys big show. But what will he do? Will he wail out to the guitar solo on Birthday? (There is no guitar solo on Birthday, but there could be one.) Maybe h**l fill in for Juicy J on Dark Horse with ...

2. Another big surprise guest. You can't have a Super Bowl Halftime Show without one huge surprise: Beyoncreunited the ladies of Destiny's Child; Janet Jackson released her nipple; the existence of Aerosmith. Too bad it won't be a surprise anymore. (If you don't want to know, skip this next part!) Last night, an "anonymous source" spilled the beans: Missy Elliott will join Perry on the Super Bowl stage. That sounds great! But here's an idea that would also shock the nation (and be blogged about for years to come): Invite rumored ex-BFF Taylor Swift up there and sing a song together. (Imagine if it's a "Bad Blood" duet.)We're friends again! Go, friendship! Go, females! Go, Super Bowl! Go, America!

3. Latex, as in Katy will be wearing some. Its quite literally a guarantee that Katy Perry will wear some sort of form-fitting latex or spandex situation, in case you need to convince the football fans youre perhaps watching the Big Game with that they need to pay attention to the halftime show.

4. Cats. Having seen Katy Perrys Prism tour, I can pretty much promise you that her Halftime Spectacular will include some sort of feline. Will it be a bunch of dancers dressed in terrifying cat costumes? (Did we not learn anything from Cats?) Will it be Perry herself with cat ears? Perhaps a trippy floating cat-face la Miley?

5. Balloons: So let me get you in your birthday suit / Its time to bring out the big balloons. Noted.

6. This:

7. Speaking of fireworks, there willdefinitely be fireworks. And the song "Firework." Its the Super Bowl! End with a bang. A very controlled, very inspiring bang.

8. A medley! If you've seen a Super Bowl Halftime Show before, you know these things run on medleys. But what will Perry pick from her vast discography of hits? She's got 12 and a half minutes to work with, so let's say she does the classics: "Teenage Dream," "California Gurls," "Firework," "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" as well as the hits off Prism: "This Is How We Do," "Roar," Dark Horse." Will she include the underrated "Birthday"? How about a short interlude tribute to "I Kissed a Girl"? Let's assume she closes with "Firework"; will there be any other unexpected additions?

9.Ferras. "Who?" Ferras. He's the first guy Katy Perry signed to her Metaphorphosis Music label just lastyear. He also went along with her on the Prism tour, appearing mid-show to show off his skills and have Perry gab about his talents. Will he be at the Super Bowl? Likely. Will Perry use her chance at this immense audience to push her artist? Perhaps.

10. Cultural appropriation. Just saying! It wouldn't be the first time.

Katy Perry promises 'wild' Super Bowl halftime, but she won't be fined

Updated JAN 29, 2015 9:10p ET

PHOENIX -- In between the burning questions about her costumes, her hair and the planned choreography of her halftime show at Super Bowl XLIX, pop mega-icon Katy Perry delivered the line of the week when asked if she had her single-girl's eye on a particular player in Sunday's game at University of Phoenix Stadium."I'm just here so I don't get fined," Perry said, channeling the infamous line from Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch at Super Bowl Media Day.Given the gathered crowd and the size of room designated for Perry's press conference on Thursday at the Phoenix Convention Center, you could make a strong argument that the Super Bowl is the sideshow this weekend while Perry is the headline act.

One of the world's biggest music stars has a record 64.1 million followers on Twitter, a Grammy Award, anthemic hits like "Roar" and "Firework" that she will perform on Sunday, and a reported net worth of $130 million. She also promised that "nothing in my performance will be deflated."

"Katy Perry is as big as it gets," said Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski, who was one of many players singing her songs at media day.

Perry spent about 20 minutes discussing her upcoming performance immediately after national anthem singer Idina Menzel fielded questions. Perry was joined at one point on stage by her dog, Butters, and she reminded everyone that she spent her kindergarten and first grade years at Paradise Valley Christian School, so "I feel like this is somewhat of hometown turf," she said. "I feel very comfortable here."

Here's a sampling of her other responses.

On asking Lenny Kravitz to join her on stage: "We've worked up something incredibly soulful. Of course he brings his soul and I think he's going to make the night even sexier -- just the appropriate sexiness, everyone. Family fun."

On what viewers can expect: "I think I'm the only person in Super Bowl halftime history that will bring both a lion and sharks to the show. It's going to be wild out there."

On who she's rooting for: "I love the Seahawks because of (friend and QB) Russell (Wilson) so I think that I'm going to probably go for them."

On potential costumes (maybe channeling Katniss Everdeen): "If I have 12 1/2 minutes I'm going to take the opportunity to show off a few looks. I know there are some bets going on out there, so I won't ruin the surprise. I don't believe in gambling, but this is exciting. I've never been bet on as far as what my hair color is going to be.

"All I'll say about my opening costume is that it's going to be flaming hot."

On surprise guests: "I thought long and hard about it. I wanted to kind of bring someone back, a throwback of sorts that definitely needed some more shine. All I can say is it will be a real female fun night. When this person enters the stage and when you hear the first ring of the cord, I think jaws will drop and faces will melt."

On the show: "I'm not bringing any elements from my tour, which is such a visual feast in and of itself. I made a whole different show for this particular halftime show. We've spent many months curating such a wonderful show."

On concerns over wardrobe malfunctions (a la Janet Jackson): "I'm not self-sabotaging by nature. If there is news about my performance, I want for all of it to be about the music and female empowerment and that everybody just had a great time."I can only control myself. I've done plenty of fittings. I'm working with my costumes on the field already. Like I said, my motivation and my objective here is for people to be talking about the music the next day. I hold a lot of pride in the music, and I wouldn't want anything to (deter) from that."
