Scouts break down Eagles vs. Washington Redskins

EAGLES ~ "LYIN" EYES" 1977

PHILADELPHIA All right so it"s a 6-8 team against a 7-7 team; it"s still the biggest game of the season and will, in all probability, determine the NFC Eastchampion.

The Washington Redskins (7-7) come to Lincoln Financial Field on Saturday night with a chance to win the division title, if they can beat the Eagles(6-8) for the second time this season and for the third straight time overall.

PLUS:Agholor remains upbeat

If the Eagles win Saturday night they could win their second division title in three years with a win the following week against the Giants.

Three highly-regarded scouts gave their take on their game and broke down the match-ups.

"I"m going with the Eagles, simply because they"re home,"" the first scout said. "I think it"s going to be close.""

The second went with the visitors.

"Anything can happen, right?"" he said. "But you"re asking me to pick, I"ll take Washington. (The Redskins) are just playing better right now.""

Finally, the third scout hedged his pick.

"With DeMarco Murray, Eagles 20-17,"" he said. "Without DeMarco Murray, Redskins, 24-14.""

MORE: Eagles in driver"s seat

Here"s the breakdown:

Redskins" offense vs. Eagles" defense

"You tell me the Eagles secondary is injured and then you add DeSean (Jackson)coming back with some motivation, that"s scary (for the Eagles),"" one scout said.

He added that while the primary focus will be on Jackson, the former Eagle, the Redskins spread the ball around and get everyone involved.

"They have (Pierre) Garcon and he"ll make all the tough, third-down catches,"" he said. "And then the tight end, Jordan Reed. They scheme him up and get the match-ups they want. That"s their guy.""

ALSO:3 Eagles selected for Pro Bowl

Washington quarterback Kirk Cousins has been playing well, too.

Cousins, who will be a free agent at the end of the season, has a quarterback rating of 101.4, or better, in each of his last four games, including a near-perfect 153.7 last week against the Buffalo Bills.

In his last two games, both wins, Cousins is 46-for-59 for 619 yards with five touchdowns and just one interception. He also ran for two touchdowns.

"He"s showing he"s a NFL quarterback,"" one scout said. "And making himself some money, too.""

One scout said Washington"s running game with Alfred Morris and Matt Jones is scheme-based.

"They"re the old-school three-four yards at a time. Every once and again Jones will break one, or he"ll get you on a screen. But mostly they just want to grind it out when they run.""

How should the Eagles attack the offense?

"They have to get after Cousins, put him in a bad spot,"" one scout said. "That"s what Dallas did and it worked. Billy Davis likes to blitz, he might have to come up with some different ones to throw Cousins off his game.""

PLUS: Bradford just not good enough

Redskins" defense vs. Eagles" offense

"Give their coordinator (Joe Barry) a lot of credit,"" one scout said of the Redskins. "He"s doing a great job. He"s got them in the right schemes, making the right calls. He couldn"t have them playing much better than they are. Because talent-wise I really don"t like them much.""

Washington"s numbers on defense are not that impressive.

"You look at them on paper and you think that"s a really bad defense,"" another scout said. "But they play hard. They come up with a big play when they need it.""

The Redskins are 25th in overall defense: tied for 13th against the pass and 27th against the run. They allow 23.7 points per game, 15th in the league.

Quarterbacks have thrown 26 touchdown passes against them, with just nine interceptions for a cumulative passer rating of 96.2.

"You can make plays against their secondary,"" the first scout said. "If (Sam) Bradford and those receivers play well, the Eagles win.""

MLB hot stove: Alex Gordon has new suitor; Mike Leake lands big dollars

Mike Leake traded to the Giants

We have more proof that you don"t have to be a great player anymore to be paid like one.

Merry Christmas, Mike Leake.

The 28-year-old starting pitcher has good but unspectacular career numbers and never has been an All-Star, but landed a six-year, $80-million contract on Tuesday from the St. Louis Cardinals.

Meantime, the Chicago White Sox might be the team that becomes the Grinch to the reigning World Series champs.

The Kansas City Royals are hoping that they"ll be able to re-sign free agent left fielder Alex Gordon, but the White Sox are "showing interest"and could price them out, Fox Sports" Ken Rosenthal reported.

Rosenthal tweeted that "Gordon appeals (to the White Sox) for several reasons: Knows division, (left handed-hitter), defense, makeup."

Gordon, 31, is a three-time All-Star and career .269 hitter who has played his entire nine-year career for KC. He hit .271 with 13 homers in 104 games last season plus .241 with two homers in 16 postseason games.

The Cardinals, after losing right fielder Jason Heyward to the Chicago Cubs, are among other clubs rumored to be in the running for Gordon.

St. Louis, which has won three NL Central titles in a row, did make up for the loss of free agent starter John Lackey by signing Leake.

The 5-foot-10 righty was 11-10 with a 3.70 ERA in 2015 pitching for Cincinnati and San Francisco. For his career, he"s 64-52 with a 3.88 ERA since 2010 with a 14-win campaign as a Red in "13.

The Orioles, while still keeping tabs on free agent first baseman Chris Davis, are expected to announce the signing of left handed-hitting South Korean outfielder Hyun-soo Kim to a two-year, $7-million deal before Christmas, the Baltimore Sun reported.

Kim, who hit .326 with 28 homers and 121 RBIs in 141 games last season in the Korean Baseball Organization, is expected to be the Orioles" starting left fielder next season.

As for Davis, it appears that the Orioles still are very interested in re-signing the lefty-swinging slugger even though they took their seven-year, $150-million offer off the table.

Davis, 29, averaged 40 homers in his four full seasons with Baltimore, including an MLB-best 53 in 2013 and 47 in 2015.

Veteran outfielder Alejandro De Aza is on the move again after playing in the big leagues last season for three teams.

His new club is the Mets, who signed the 31-year-old Dominican on Tuesday to a one-year deal that Rothenthal reported is worth $5.75 million plus a possible $1.25 million in performance bonuses.

De Aza, 31, hit .261 with seven homers, 32 RBIs playing 90 games last season for Baltimore, Boston and San Francisco. The left-handed hitter is a career .267 hitter over an eight-year career in which he"s also played for the Marlins and White Sox.

Free agent right-hander Mat Latos, a three-time 14-game winner who had a rough 2015 season, is drawing interest fromBaltimore, Kansas City, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay, ESPN.com"s Jerry Crasnick reported.

Latos, 28, was 4-10 with a 4.95 ERA last season in 24 games, 21 as a starter, pitching in 2015 for the two Los Angeles teams.

Freddy Sanchez, a three-time All-Star second baseman and 2006 NL batting champ playing for Pittsburgh, celebrated his 38th birthday on Monday by filing his retirement papers, Crasnick reported.

Sanchez hasn"t played since suffering a season-ending shoulder injury in 2011, the last of his 2-plus seasons with San Francisco,. He had back surgery the following season, then "contemplated a comeback in recent years," Crasnick tweeted.

The Hollywood, Calif., native was a .297 hitter over 10 seasons, the first two of which were cups of coffee with Boston in 2002 and "03.

Giants" Jason Pierre-Paul calls Sunday"s game against Patriots a "terrible loss"

Josh Norman Bodyslams Odell Beckham Jr.

Jason Pierre-Paul, the Giant with the freshest legs and fewest fingers, stood at his locker following the 27-26 loss to the Patriots Sunday night and minced no words as his team pivoted toward the bye week.

We had them, he said. Terrible loss.

He saw few silver linings in a golden opportunity lost, and mentioned that the upcoming off week was not a bonus in his eyes since he had just played his second game of the season while teammates have played 10. He planned to stay in New York this week, review film and continue finding the best way to attack.

VACCHIANO: GIANTS GO FROM SUPER TO STUPOR IN PATRIOTS LOSS

Im just getting started, he said.

Pierre-Paul collected his first sack of the season against the Patriots, only to see it erased from the stat sheets because of a hands-to-the-face penalty on the play. His whirling toward Patriots quarterback Tom Brady helped to unsettle the Patriot at times, providing the pass rush that needed improvement when Pierre-Paul was recovering from his Fourth of July injuries. He was also credited with a pass defensed, and felt most comfortable wearing a protective club instead of a glove. Together, the Giants forced the reigning Super Bowl MVP to fumble on one play and get picked off on what Brady called a terrible throw by the goal line. The turnovers were no consolation.

We flustered them and had them on their heels, linebacker Jonathan Casillas said. Until the last play of the game.

There will be plenty for the defense to learn from regarding the finish. The Patriots ran the ball early behind tailback LeGarrette Blount, and tight end Rob Gronkowski scored on a 76-yard reception. The Giants did not have to deal with Patriots wideout Julian Edelman, New Englands leading receiver, because he was went off with a foot injury at the end of the first quarter.

Despite it all, Brady completed 26 of 42 passes for 334 yards.

Pierre-Paul is still making up for lost time. He insisted that the Giants needed to start looking ahead to a Nov. 29 matchup with Washington.

Asked how he felt physically, he said, I think Im in good shape. I dont know, Im tired man.

Jason Pierre-Paul shows off mangled right hand as Giants star talks for first ...

HD: Odell Beckham Jr. vs Josh Norman Helmet to helmet hit after play scuffle

Jason Pierre-Paul rubbed the scarred skin that used to be his index finger, caressing it with his good hand throughout a 12-minute session with reporters. The mangled limb was out there in front of the cameras for the world to see, no longer the guarded injury that may have cost a 26-year-old his lifes work.

There was no such vulnerability from the Giants star. He was smiling, confident, dismissive and, above all, defiant.

Pierre-Paul offered no apologies and few words of regret in his first interview since blowing up his hand in a July 4 fireworks accident. He declared himself a better player with nothing to prove, and explained that his lack of communication with the Giants was simply the consequence of medication.

MYERS: JPP FINALLY BACK WITH GIANTS, MAY NEVER BE SAME AGAIN

RELATED: A TIMELINE OF JPP SINCE FIREWORKS INCIDENT

You cant do nothing when youre on anesthesia, waking up, going in and out of conscious, he said. I had no reason not to let them in (the hospital). I just didnt know.

I dont know who was making my decisions. It couldve been the doctors.

Pierre-Paul, who signed a one-year deal with Big Blue on Tuesday, will not travel with the team to New Orleans for Sundays game against the Saints.

The DE characterized that as his own decision following a conversation with Tom Coughlin, believing his presence would cause further distraction to his teammates. Its still unclear when, or if, Pierre-Paul will play real games and try to capitalize on an incentive-laden contract. But that was almost a moot point.

Im the same JPP that I was last year, he said, acknowledging h**l be wearing a special glove on his mangled right hand. Theres not going to be a major adjustment. As far as my hand goes, Ill get used to it. Im just fortunate to play football again.

RELATED: JPP GUARANTEED $1.5M FROM GIANTS THIS SEASON

I dont have a desire to prove anybody wrong. The day I walked in here I already won. People said I was going to be out for the whole season. And I knew what kind of effort I put in the offseason way before this happened. Just coming back, I already won.

The fireworks disaster that cost Pierre-Paul at least a $15 million contract was a mistake and thing that happened. He said it occurred during an annual event with kids in South Florida, something hed done for the last six or seven years.

The mistake, or my fault, he said, was buying the fireworks. I did it and it just went off. Things happen. Mistakes happen. I wasnt shocked at all. My fiance was going crazy. But I stayed calm.

I wasnt embarrassed at all, he added. At the end of the day, media is going to say what theyre going to say. People are going to have their opinions. But I didnt care about none of that. Because one way or another, I was going to return to football.

Throughout the 12-minute interview, he interrupted answers to declare that theres an untold story to the accident one that hes holding back for another time. I got pictures and everything, he said. Pierre-Paul turned appreciative when asked about support from the Giants, and while recalling a sobering stay in the hospital.

Im just very fortunate Im alive, he said. I got wounds and I look up every day at my hand and say, Thank you, Lord. But Ive seen worse. There was probably 12 people in that hospital and mine was the best so Im just fortunate.

RELATED: TOM COUGHLIN NOT SURE WHEN JPP WILL HIT THE FIELD

Although defiant, Pierre-Paul acknowledged one very important lesson: no more firework shows.

Of course it is (my last time). You live and learn. People make mistakes. Were all human. Were all people.
