La Caada officials consider Sports Chalet"s headquarters as a potential buy

Sport chalet

With City Hall quarters growing increasingly close, La Caada officials seem to be eyeing available real estate in search of a property that could accommodate a relocation, or at least handle the personnel overflows of more populous departments.

An agenda for a Dec. 15 closed session meeting of the La Caada Flintridge City Council indicated City Manager Mark Alexander is currently engaged in talks with La Caada Properties, Inc., regarding possible prices and terms of payment for 1 Sport Chalet Drive, which has served as Sport Chalet headquarters since 2002.

While Alexander stated in an email last week he was not at liberty to discuss the matter, he said the current City Hall building, located at 1327 Foothill Blvd., has been owned by the city for at least the past 15 years and occupied by city staff even longer.

Mayor Dave Spence said in an interview last week city officials had been contacted by a representative of La Caada Properties and told the space was being put up for sale. Officials have sought appraisals for both the Sport Chalet building and the current City Hall building, he added.

"The city is still evaluating what would be the most financially prudent view," Spence said. "We"re trying to get a handle on the amount of money we could get for the current City Hall if we did move the location."

The property on which Sport Chalet"s corporate office sits includes the 27,915 square-foot building at 1 Sport Chalet Drive, as well as a 3,038 square-foot building at 827 Houseman St., currently being leased by the Foothill Progressive Montessori School through 2024.

According to Glendale commercial real estate broker Stevenson Real Estate Services, which has the property listed online for sale or for lease, the first floor of the corporate office building can be leased for the monthly rate of $2.30 per square foot. The entire lot is listed as available for purchase for a total of $14.4 million.

Randy Stevenson said in an interview Tuesday Sport Chalet"s corporate headquarters currently occupies the building"s second floor. While the option to lease the bottom floor has been available since September, the owners decided to also list the property for sale about a month ago. Stevenson confirmed La Caada city officials expressed some interest in the space some months back.

"They toured the building," he said. "We coordinated a tour, got the building accessible and walked them through."

Spence said he believed the estimate given the city for an undetermined portion of the property was in the neighborhood of about $11 million.

In 2014, the locally founded and independently operated Sport Chalet was bought by Connecticut-based Vestis Retail Group, which owns East Coast sports retailers Bob"s Stores and Eastern Mountain Sports. At the time of the sale, Vestis announced Sport Chalet chief executive Craig Levra would remain in that position in the La Caada corporate office for the foreseeable future.

In May of this year, Levra left the company and is now actively involved in the boards of a database and a tech retail company. It"s unclear whether Vestis plans to move all Sport Chalet offices elsewhere. Representatives from the company did not return multiple calls.

Meanwhile, the Sport Chalet site is not the only option being considered to reduce overcrowding at City Hall. Spence said city officials were recently advised a neighboring office building adjacent to Memorial Park may soon be available for purchase.

While the space would not likely accommodate all the city"s departments, the mayor said it could provide a means for housing employees from some of the city"s more crowded work spaces.

"We are trying to figure out how we can relieve the congestion of our employees," Spence said. "These two buildings are up for sale, so we"re just trying to evaluate what is the best move."

NBA play-offs: Steph Curry"s ankle; Paul George"s old school Saturday takeaways

Paul George Full Highlights at Raptors 2016 Playoffs R1G1 - 33 Pts, 6 Ast, BEAST!

Throughout the NBA play-offs, The Nationals resident NBA dudes Jonathan Raymond and Kevin Jeffers will be breaking down the key talking points of the night before. Below, the takeaways from the first night of the 2016 post-season:

Read more: 2016 NBA Play-offs Previews and predictions, plus schedule in UAE time

Saturday, April 16 scores:

Toronto Raptors 90-100 Indiana Pacers (Pacers 1-0)

Golden State Warriors 104-78 Houston Rockets (Warriors 1-0)

Atlanta Hawks 102-101 Boston Celtics (Hawks 1-0)

Oklahoma City Tunder 108-70 Dallas Mavericks (Thunder 1-0)

Stephen Currys ankle will be the most talked-about body part of the play-offs

It seems like a lifetime ago. In many ways, it seems like it never even happened, like the Stephen Curry we know today the visionary-passing, feverish-ball-handling, angelic-shooting whirling dervish assassin simply emerged fully-formed out of the basketball ether when he ascended to superstardom a couple seasons back.

But before this Curry, there was merely the pretty-good Curry, who shot fewer threes, didnt go to the rim as confidently, created fewer opportunities and whose defence was so suspect it brought into genuine question his long-term viability as an NBA starter.

And that Curry, before he could become this Curry, also had to answer the question of whether there would be a Curry in the NBA at all.

The ankle injuries, and surgeries, that sapped the eventual MVPs 2011/12 season, at age 23 his third in the league, are easy to forget about now. Easy to forget that before Stephen Curry was master of the basketball universe, he was a frustrated kid telling his trainer: I feel like Ive been doing nothing but rehabbing for two years. I feel like Im never going to be able to play again."

We can thank Dr Richard Ferkel, Brandon Payne and Keke Lyles for that.

But it still always lingers, quietly in the background, and every now and then like on Saturday night we are ominously reminded of it.

Curry is almost certainly fine. He even tried to come back in against Houston; coach Steve Kerr refused him, and may keep him out of Game 2. Still, its a reminder. A reminder that Currys potential Achilles heel is always lurking there, inside his ankle. And a reminder that any foregone coronation could have an unforeseen kink looming.

It still helps to be able to go old school

All season, the Warriors and Spurs have been showing us that ball-movement and three-point shooting pace and space are the engine to a modern offence. s******g around with inefficient mid-range jumpers and plodding isolation plays is dinosaur basketball.

And then we are reminded not every team in the NBA can be the Warriors and Spurs. And that it still helps to be able to get points out of mid-range and isolation offence if its what players can effectively do.

As the Raptors attack ground to a halt in the final five minutes in their opener against the Pacers, there was Paul George, sinking a step-back 17-footer, dishing off inside for a couple easy buckets, hitting a contested jumper from the top of the key. And suddenly what was a one-point nail-biter looked more like a one-sided snooze.

The Pacers had George as a trump card. George, whose game is smooth, simple and straight out of 1996. Dont say it doesnt have a place in the modern NBA.

The West is a series of mismatches

Even with Curry missing a full half, the Rockets were dismantled by Golden State. The team that went to the Western Conference Finals last year is long gone. Houston looked like they lack cohesion, desire and anything resembling a gameplan. Whether theyre not even trying or just plain bad, it doesnt really make a difference. Theyre toast.

Similarly, the Mavericks are overmatched with the Thunder. Rick Carlisle has done a fantastic job keeping that team together this season, and making what they could of what is probably Dirk Nowitzkis final year, but there just isnt enough there.

If either of these series, and with them the Spurs-Grizzlies pairing, is anything less than a four-game sweep, it would count as a massive shock.

The East, however, will be fun

The Celtics and Hawks looked coming into their series like they would be pretty evenly matched, and they delivered. Both play well-rounded, distinct, entertaining styles of basketball, and this series might very well be the most rewarding to watch in the first round. It could go seven games.

Meanwhile, old ghosts are already haunting the Raptors. Their crumbling was cringe-worthy, and it seems all the mentality questions hovering around a team who have disappointedly exited in the first round each of the past two seasons remain.

Blues vs. Blackhawks, 2016 NHL playoffs: Time, TV schedule and live stream

Gotta See It: Wild bounce ends Blackhawks and Blues OT deadlock

Dennis Wierzbicki-USA TODAY Sports

Both teams are knotted at 1-1 as the series heads to Chicago.

You may be surprised to learn the first round series between the Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues heads into Game 3 on Sunday tied at 1-1. Just kidding. We all know this is going seven games. Puck drop in Chicago is at 3 p.m. ET.

Scouting the Blackhawks

Duncan Keith made an instant impact upon his return from a six-game suspension, registering two points and bolstering the Blackhawks" blue-line in Game 2. Chicago benefited from luck in some ways in the win; if Vladimir Tarasenko"s go-ahead goal in the second period isn"t overturned, the Blues might"ve gone into full Ken Hitchcock "shutdown mode" defensively. Instead, Chicago sustained the momentum. Keeping it through the next two home games is crucial.

Scouting the Blues

It took two playoff games for the Blues to reach a crossroads of sorts. Either they let the missed calls in Game 2 carry over and deflate them, or they rally around it and put up a great road performance in Game 3. Odds are it"ll be the latter, though they"ll have to change their "hit every Blackhawk that moves" strategy. St. Louis has 41 hits in each game and that hasn"t keept the Blackhawks from almost surpassing them in shots both times.

On Israel Visit, Monica Lewinsky Tackles Online Hate Speech

Hillary Clinton Discusses Monica Lewinsky and Her Marriage

7 Apr, 20167 Apr, 2016

Lewinsky is an anti-bullying champion, having been the victim of personal attacks in the wake of the affair she had with then-U.S. president Bill Clinton in the mid-1990s.

The panel was held as part of the Forbes 30 Under 30 Summit. I came to be interested in the topic of bullying because of experiences that I had in the late 1990s, Lewinsky told the audience, according to the Jerusalem Post.

And if you do not know what I am talking about, please do not Google it, she joked.

Lewinsky said that, with the advent of social media, the nature of human dialogue has changed.

I wanted to moderate this panel because of the bullying work I have been doing and seeing all of the harassing and shaming and trolling that is done on line, she said.

The affair thatcatapulted Lewinsky to national and global headlines took place before websites like Facebook and Twitter made public shaming as dominant as they are today.

We are now in a place, because of social media, that dialogue, online dialogue, was leading to people sometimes taking their own lives, Lewinsky said, according to the Post.

As a result, she added, how we chose our words and we communicate is something that we need to pay even more attention to online.

Among those present at the panel were two people who deal with online expressions of the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Muhammad Nasser Eddin, director of Middle East programming for Seeds of Peace, said that online communication is challenging because of the comments that are posted about the conflict. The focus of the program he runs, bringing together Israel and Palestinian teenagers, is face-to-face dialogue, he said.

Moriya Rosenberg, a member of the YaLa Peace Movement, a Facebook-based group promoting peace and coexistence, also participated. The group allows people to engage in a safe space where you can be yourself and open up and learn about other cultures, she said, adding that YaLa is a huge network with more than a million members.

"Colonia" Movie True Story: History Of Colonia Dignidad Before Emma Watson Film Premieres

Emma Watson Surprise PRANK

If you thought the Colonia movie was a complete work of fiction, think again. The movie, which stars Harry Potter actress Emma Watson as a women who finds herself living in a cult-like sec in 1973 while looking for her abducted boyfriend, is based on a true events. Before the political thrillerpremieres in theaters, get to know some ofthe truth behind the films inspiration.

The trailer for shows Lena (Watson) arriving to a village in the woods. Once you join us, you must remain, a man, played by Michael Nyqvist, tells her. How have you spent your life so far? You must have a boyfriend. Someone who loves you. When Lenadenies being attached, the man reveals he thinksshes lying, but her answers appearto satisfy him. Watsons character is later seenconforming to the religious sects rules by wearing a uniform, working to serve G*d, praying, and being abused.

The trailer reveals a reunion betweenWatson and her lost lover Daniel (Daniel Brhl). In one scene her boyfriend is shown apologizing to her that shes been abducted. Im so sorry they brought you here as well, he says. I joined up to find you, she admits. Unfortunately for the couple, their reunion may be short-lived. Another sequenceshows Daniel being tortured in a bed and blindfolded and Lena bleeding from her nose.

While the promosfor the Florian Gallenberger (City of War: The Story of John Rabe) feature are dramatic, its nothing in comparison to the horrorstories that have come out of the real Colonia Dignidad. The 70-square mile sect was created by Paul Schfer (Nyqvists character)near Parral, Chile, in 1961. BBC News" report about the sect in 2005 stateit was created by Schfer, a former n**i nurseturned preacher, after he fled Germany following a warrantfor his arrest due to claims he molested two boys. In its heyday, the group had 300 members, most of which included German immigrants. Colonia Dignidad was reportedly attractive to locals as well as it offered free schooling, hospital care and jobs.

While it isdifficult to separate fact from fiction, testimony fromthose who spent time insideSchfer"s worldis chilling. BBC News reports that defectors from the camp have said Schfer was worshipped as a G*d, members were not allowed to leave, were segregated by s*x and taught to shun sexual desires. Electric shocks were also administered to the genitals of young boys underground, which would help better explain Daniels torture scene.Schfer is also said to have partnered with Chilean dictatorGeneral Augusto Pinochets secret service during his rulingand allowed Colonia Dignidad to serve as a torture camp for his prisoners.

"The more time I spent studying the historical facts and hearing peoples stories, the more I wanted to learn about Schfer"s microcosm. I wanted to tell the story of a couple who become members of this community by chance and who try to escape, Gallenberger said in Screen Media Films press release. "Although our two main characters are fictitious, each detail of the film is historically confirmed, even some of the dialogue with Paul Schfer are authentic.

After several years on the run, Schferwas arrestedin Argentina at the age of 84 in March 2005. In 2006, he was found guilty of sexual abusing over 20 children and earned 20 years in jail and a monetary fine. Schfer died of heart failure at a prison hospital in Santiagoin 2010.

The American Scholar organization reports that the group, which has been renamed Villa Baviera, is now partially integratedwith regular culture. The village remains an oasis of German tidiness, with blooming flower gardens and perfectly tended copses of willows and pines, journalist Bruce Falconer wrote of his visit to the community in 2008. As I walked through it, there were very few people on the streets, and those I encountered smiled politely, then quickly retreated indoors. They did not invite conversation.

Colonia premieres in theaters on Friday.
