Oblique Strategy: Skirting the Edge of Intergalactic War in Stellaris

Stellaris - PC Review

Up until a few days ago, I had never played a grand strategy game. Id heard of Sid Meiers Civilization, Total War, Europa Universalis and others, but Id never really paid attention to them. As far as I was concerned they were games I would never play, my lack of a capable PC allowing me to forget all about them. When I was asked to go to a two day multiplayer event to play one of these games, you can then imagine my trepidation. Stellaris, the 4X grand space strategy title that Id be playing, sounded complicated. My research also told me that Paradox, the developers behind it, were renowned for making particularity complex strategy games. Safe to say, I was scared. However, Im not one to shy away from a challenge, so I agreed to travel to the event, for better or worse.

As soon as I arrived, I felt out of my depth. Standing outside, I joined a conversation with some fellow journalists, their talk of strategy games going completely over my head. I didnt know what they were talking about and I was now more afraid than ever of what I might find in the room opposite me. Despite my reservations, I sat down at a PC, listened to a short presentation, and then we were told to start the game. Before getting into the action, we had to customize our empire, deciding things such as its name, what race our people would be and defining our government and ethics. I decided to make a xenophobic human race who had direct democracy, which meant every five years there would be an election. My empire name: Death To All But Metal. (Thank you, Steel Panther.) As the day went on, my name became less and less fittingDeath To No One But Myself would sound more accurate.

On the first day, Paradox told us that attacking each other was forbidden and so the room entered into a non-aggression pact. This allowed us to come to grips with how to play the game and give us an opportunity to build up our empires. The goal of Stellaris, in its most basic form, is to expand your empire and become the strongest and biggest one within your allocated solar system. In order to do this, you have to explore planets beyond yours using science ships, you have to inhabit other worlds and you have to maintain a healthy income of resources in order to build and upgrade your empire. This is just a tiny portion of the things you have to do and think about, though. Strategy game newbies like myself will probably take their first look at the game, even just the starting menus, and think Stellaris looks terrifying. However, help is at hand in the form of very useful tutorials.

Showing up on the right hand side of the screen, these tutorials were a life saver to me throughout my time with Stellaris. They taught we how to make new ships, how to mine for resources on other planets and how to recruit people, such as Scientists, in order to make things like research run smoothly. Without the tutorials, I would have been lost. And smart, careful placement on the screen meant they were never too intrusive or annoying. I also found the hints very useful, things such as hovering over resources icons giving you extra guidance. Just because its helpful doesnt mean Stellaris pampered me, though. It didnt hold my hand but it didnt feel like it was throwing me in the deep end either. Instead the tutorials just guided me to where I should be, and learning how the game works for myself seems like a large part of what Paradox is aiming for.

These tutorials were useful, but I found a better to way to learn: by p*****g my empire up the wall.

After wed had lunch, I looked over my small, but functioning empire. Id played about 2 hours at this point and I was relatively happy with my progress. Martin Anward, the AI Lead at Paradox, even came over while I was waiting to restart and said I was doing well, his excitement upon seeing my Gala World being completely lost on me. Once we returned to the game, however, I got cocky. I decided the best thing to do would be to start a war with a neighboring empire, the Bakuturian Sovereignty, who were much more powerful and bigger than me. It was a mistake. To wage my unwinnable war, I had to communicate with them. To do this, you click on the emblem of your chosen empire or you can select them via the Government tab on your top left. Early on I had declared them as my rival, which I did to gain influence points. These are currency that you can use to build frontier outposts, their purpose being to extend how much of the solar system you can build and settle on. Influence points make up a third of your main resources, and while they arent as useful or important as energy and minerals, they are vital to expanding your empire.

As they were already my rivals, the Bakuturian Sovereignty werent too keen on me anyway, my xenophobic stance on alien relations not helping the matter. Clicking on the communicate button, I saw that I could exchange resources with them, set up an embassy in their territory and demand they become my vassal. This is basically where you make another empire your pet, them operating semi-independently but without a say in foreign policy, who they wage war with and with no way to stop you from taking a cut of their resources. They said no so I said go to h**l and waged war. I thought I was safe: Id developed a 800 attack fleet after all, an attack number that I now know to be laughably flimsy. I had to learn this the hard way. It was over in about ten minutes. They sent in two thousand enemy ships to attack my fleet, nearly destroying them in the process. Then they went after my stations on my home planet Earth, with my Spaceport, where armies and ships are developed, taking heavy fire, as well as my research and mining stations.

I had to submit before I was wiped out. When I surrendered, they demanded my home planet of Earth and everything on it, including its residents. I gave it to them, making Sirius my new homeland and cowardly leaving my people under the rule of a bunch of evil tyrants. As you can probably tell, I was heavily invested at this point. I learned more from my failed war experience than anything else in those two days; seeing how not to play Stellaris allowed me to learn how to properly play it. Much else happened through the rest of the day: I joined an Alliance with The Merrymen, who were controlled by a fellow room dweller. She dragged me into a war, but it was thankfully mostly fought in her territory. The Shell, a rapidly expanding empire next to me who were ran by a Polish YouTuber, asked me to leave The Merrymen Alliance and join one with him. I accepted considering his vast size and my depleted nation. I also started noticing people leaving their seats and walking towards other players. Then I remembered: tomorrow the non-aggression pact would be over. It would be a free for all and people wanted to make alliances before the chaos. I would stay quiet throughoutmy empire had been through enough already.

During that evenings dinner, we were told that the room was actually going to be split up into two alliances. So the next day we all chose a side: The New Space Party or The Possibly Aggression Pact. The New Space Party was led by Martin, the Paradox AI Lead. Naturally, I chose them. After a few hours of preparation and a short break, the war began. I stayed quiet, traversing the map and watching the battles unfold, the exhilaration of it all dragging me in. Watching the little ships destroy each other was wonderful, even more so because I knew I was safe. Call me a coward, but I didnt feel like being obliterated so early on in the day. Thanks to my lack of partaking, however, the war provided me with a great excuse to explore the game without being interrupted. Delving more into Stellariss systems and tabs, I learned a few lessons I could have done with knowing the day before. I learnt that I hadnt been extracting resources from my own planets, which I started doing by erecting farms and stations within Sirius. I learnt that using the ship design tab is very handy, creating new and more powerful ships leading to a better fleet. I also learned that Stellaris was even more wonderfully complex and intricate than I had thought the previous day. I did not want to part with it.

In the end, The New Space Party were victorious, the game coming to an end a few hours later. When we were told to leave the game, all I wanted to do was steal the computer in front of me and go and start Stellaris all over again. In two days this game managed to transform me from someone who didnt care about strategy games, to someone who wants to play them all, starting with this one. To some, this might just be another fish in the genres ocean, but to me, Stellaris has opened my eyes to a whole new world of videogames. One day I will have a PC that runs it, and when I do, Ill create the biggest and best empire in the galaxy, no matter how many hours it takes me to do it.

"The Good Wife" finale: reviews and reactions roundup

The Good Wife - Peter Takes The Stand

After seven seasons and a slew of awards, "The Good Wife" gave its closing statements Sunday night, closing the book on Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies) and her storied legal career.

First, the good news. "The Good Wife" ended its run on a high note, ratings-wise, bringing in 10.4 million viewers and giving it a 20 percent increase in the coveted 18-49 demographic from the previous week, according to Nielsen. The finale received the highest number of viewers for the show since November 2014, when it hit 10.72 million, and the series hadn"t topped 10 million viewers since January 2015.

But while there were plenty of people watching, not all of them necessarily enjoyed what they saw. Some critics were on board with how the series decided to wrap everything up -- or more to the point, not wrap everything up -- but others were less forgiving.

"I did not find all the loose ends frustrating, because though there is plot left up in the air, Alicia"s character is a certainty," Slate"s Willa Paskin wrote.

"You almost had me, "Good Wife" finale, right until the end. I have some very mixed emotions about that last sequence," Maureen Ryan wrote for Variety. "This last season was like the drama"s lead character: Inscrutable, unpredictable, thoughtful, engaging, a little self-indulgent and never simple."

"This finale could make you furious, and you would be right for feeling that way," Kathryn VanArendonk wrote at Vulture. "But for the sheer audacity of it all, for its defiant embrace of opacity, I think it"s right to admire as well."

And at the Boston Globe, Matthew Gilbert delivered possibly one of the harshest critiques of the swan song. "There wasn"t much to love about the series finale of "The Good Wife,"" he wrote. "Closure is overrated, especially for a series that has never been pat. But still I felt unsatisfied by the ending, as if something important was being withheld, as if the real step forward we"ve been waiting for will never be taken."

As far as viewer reactions went, fans online echoed the sentiments of most of the critics. Responses on Twitter were mixed, to say the least.

Zombie Jesse McCartney Bites a Dude in "Fear the Walking Dead"

Jesse McCartney - Superbad

Breaking up is hard to do, even during the apocalypse.

Captive, the fifth episode of Fear the Walking Deads thus far excellent second season, is a breezy diversion from the journey to Baja until it ends in a gnarly prisoner exchange between the Abigail and Connors (Mark Kelly) pirate party. Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey) ends her romance (or rather, her manipulation) of Jack (Daniel Zovatto) while Travis (Cliff Curtis) is kept below deck, left to answer to a hostile Alex (Michelle Ang) whom the Abigail left behind in Ouroboros. Predictable but engaging, Captive is a convenient end to most of the narrative threads as the Abigail resets course to Mexico.

Prisoner exchanges happen in a million spy thrillers, and even a few in the primary Walking Dead series. But Fear uses the familiar structure to advance characteristics for some of its key players: the resourcefulness of Alicia, the resiliency and humanity in Travis, and the downright super-villain ingenuity of Daniel Salazar (Rubn Blades), who is quickly becoming a round-bellied blend of Walking Deads Herschel and fan-favorite Carol.

While those three endeavor to curry favor from viewers, Chris (Lorenzo Hernie) is becoming a liability and the character who fans will likely hate the most. While plotting the prisoner exchange, the temperamental son of Travis offs Connors brother, Reed (ex-pop star Jesse McCartney in a fun, unexpected performance). But before they lose their bargaining chip completely, Reed turns into a walker, and the gears in Daniels head starts turning.

Though it is asking viewers to suspend some hefty disbelief to believe a mere potato sack can disguise a walker especially one that is violently turning his head and loudly growling Fear asks viewers to accept the familiar structure of a prisoner exchange in order to serve up a satisfying zombie bite. It works, for the most part. And besides, its Jesse McCartney as a zombie. I dont want another pretty face and I want you and your beautiful soul take on a whole new meaning when it comes from a crooning corpse.

Meanwhile, the apocalypse continues to change people, and unsurprisingly, its often for the worse. Alex could have been an ally and asset to the Abigail, but Strands restrictive foreign policies anyone not on the boat turned her into an enemy, almost leading to everyones demise. In an expository reveal to Travis, Connor picked up Alex who led them straight to the Abigail. Its a little unnecessary since Alicia was also responsible, but why not one more just to tighten these loose threads.

More than finishing up all those teasers that aired during The Walking Dead this past season, Alex ends up a tool for Travis to further his character: Hes the humane one. Unlike Rick, Travis is an empathetic magnet for the shows moral compass. Where Rick has compromised and adapted, Travis has planted himself like a tree and refuses to move in the face of the apocalypse. It could kill him, but if Travis were to change his values even now, hes as good as dead already.

FC Barcelona will open a soccer school in Charlotte

F2 TRAIN WITH FC BARCELONA - MESSI, SUAREZ, PIQUE, TURAN & TER STEGEN! Learn the Barça Way with Beko

As part of a push to expand its U.S. presence, Spanish giant FC Barcelona is opening an official soccer school in Charlotte this fall, and tryouts are set to begin in a few weeks.

FCBEscola is open to boys and girls 6-12 years old, FC Barcelona said in a recent statement. The first tryouts are May 13-14, May 27-28 and June 10-11, and the fall season runs Aug. 15-Nov. 23.

The club is working with Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation on the location, though south Charlotte is most likely because thats where it has the most players interested, spokesman Rut Vilar said.

The school will not only help local players experience firsthand the best international, professional and developmental soccer pathway, but will also help put Charlotte on the global soccer stage, said Marc Segarra, co-founder of ISL Futbol, a global sports management company partnering with FC Barcelona on its U.S. expansion.

FCBEscola in Charlotte will be the second FC Barcelona soccer academy in the U.S. The club opened FCBEscola Miami School in 2014.

In addition to the schools, FC Barcelona is also organizing summer camps in nine U.S. cities, including Charlotte and Raleigh. The summer camp runs in two sessions, June 13-17 and June 20-24, each 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

Those interested can learn more here: http://academy.fcbarcelona.us.

Additionally, the club said, certain players could be selected for an FCB Experience, which is a trip to Barcelona to practice and play at the FC Barcelona Ciutat Esportiva. They will also participate in the International FCBEscola Soccer Tournament, in which players from the clubs different schools around the world compete.

The club said to help establish the authenticity and legitimacy of the school, a director, several former FC Barcelona players and professional coaches will work full-time to establish residency in Charlotte.

In March, Charlotte Deputy City Manager Ron Kimble said he met with Barcelona officials about the prospects of the team playing a summer exhibition at Bank of America Stadium this year.

Ailing Atletico"s Title Hunt Halted

Atletico were always relying on Barcelona to make an error in their end-of-season run-in if they were to win the title, but the race is now out of their hands following a 1-1 draw at Levante.

ESPN FC"s Dermot Corrigan provided evidence of Levante as something of a bogey team for Atleti over the past decade or so:

Manager Diego Simeone"s side have now lost two matches in succession for the first time since January, leaving not only Barca but alsoReal ahead of them in time for this season"s Primera Division curtain call.

The defeat is particularly embarrassing when one considers it came against a team Atletico won"t even face in Spain"s top flight next season, per Yahoo Sports" Andrew Gaffney:

Mathematically speaking, Atleti could still draw level on points with Barca if they manage to beat Celta Vigo next Saturday and their rivals drop to Granada, but their two losses to the leaders this season make it impossible for them to win the league.

Nevertheless, Simeone and his troops can look to the Champions League final opposite bitter rivals Real as a welcome consolation, with many sure to value European success above their domestic fairytale.

Messi Momentum Keeps Barca Bubbling

Messi"s free-kick opened the scoring against Espanyol.

One more win. With one more win, Barcelona will have put the finishing touches on a second successive Primera Division crown, with Lionel Messi again starring as the driving force behind their push.

The Argentinian ace opened the scoring against Espanyol with a superb free-kick on Sunday, his fourth goal in five league games, as Sky Sports La Liga showed:

With Atletico losing out and Real rising to second, ESPN FC"s James Tyler noted the table now resembles what we"ve become accustomed to seeing in Spain"s top flight:

Suarez netted twice and was joined on the scoresheet by MSN team-mate Neymar, along with Rafinha, who scored just seconds after entering the derby fixture in the second period.

Manager Luis Enrique knows what his team must do to claim the crown, and Barcawill travel to Granada next Saturday looking to win by any means necessary.
