Protests of Milo Yiannopoulos only reinforce the controversial speaker"s message

On Tuesday May 24, the DePaul College Republicans are hosting the Dangerous f****t Tour featuring speaker Milo Yiannopoulos. A journalist for Brietbart News Network and poster boy of the emerging alt-right movement, Yiannopoulos calls himself the internets most fabulous supervillain and rose to fame for his participation in the 2014 #GamerGate controversy.

For those unaware, #GamerGate was an international media saga that came about as a reaction to feminist bloggers criticisms of sexism in the video gaming industry. Accusing these women of ethical violations and conspiring with the industry, Yiannopoulos and his followers launched an internet harassment campaign that included sending death threats to various women and doxxing, posting personal information online to induce harassment. Researchers at the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University found the campaign to be vitriolic and noted considerable abuse and harassment including rape and death threats of female developers and game critics.

This controversy propelled Yiannopoulos to fame, or perhaps infamy, making him one of the few right-wing icons popular with todays youth. His notoriety continues to grow due to his outspoken support of presidential candidate Donald Trump and his criticisms of liberalism, identity politics and the rise of political correctness, most notably on college campuses. He has garnered significant media attention for causing controversy and testing the limits of free expression.

One of Yiannopoulos favorite targets is feminism, a movement he calls a cancer, and denies various statistical realities including the gender wage gap, which he calls debunked despite most researchers accepting the reality that gender wage differentials exist. He also denies the existence of the patriarchy a matriarchy in his eyes and argues that all university gender studies programs should be eliminated, asserting that birth control is evil because it makes women fat and crazy.

Despite being openly gay himself, Yiannopoulos publicly attacks the LGBT community and connected activist movements. He has stated multiple times that he believes that being gay is wrong, thinks that gay rights have made us dumber, and asserts that he would not raise a child in a gay household. He also challenges transgender rights, arguing that trans people should be banned from undergoing s*x changes which he views as an indulgence and should instead be treated with therapy and drugs like other psychiatric disorders.

Another favorite topic of his is #BlackLivesMatter, a movement Yiannapoulos accuses of being counteractive to its own intentions because of the demonstrators whiny demeanor and lack of factual support for their cause, although he provides no counter-evidence aside from making generic, racist criticisms of black culture including blaming the failure of black men for the prevalence of single-mother households. He has also called the movement preposterous and socially counter-productive and is staunchly opposed to African-Americans racist behavior towards whites.

What is clear, after an in-depth look into Yiannopoulos arguments, is that these ideologies are not intended to be rational viewpoints but instead are formulated to create as much dissent and rage as possible. This anger is materializing all over the country as he incites protests at various colleges, including Rutgers University, where his recent event was disrupted by feminists demonstrating by covering themselves in fake blood. A major component of alt-right rhetoric is the portrayal of liberals as coddled, childish and regressive, accusing them of being overly politically correct (PC) and opposed to free speech if it is discordant with their progressive ideology. The rise of safe spaces, trigger warnings and a new focus on non-offensive discourse on many campuses is seen as a way of repressing conservative ideology.

Heres the important point: Yiannopoulos isnt entirely wrong. The issue of political correctness on college campuses is an extremely necessary conversation. One prominent issue, for example, is the debate over trigger warnings on class syllabuses, which would allow students to exempt themselves from schoolwork they find offensive or disturbing and require professors to provide alternative assignments. This kind of hypersensitivity is counter-productive to the goals of higher education, not only because of the high potential for abuse, but also because a certain level of discomfort is often necessary to a learning experience. How could one, for example, truly understand the history of this country without exposure to various unsettling themes and images such as racial violence?

Another important issue is the politics surrounding safe spaces. The idea of a safe space is to offer an inclusive environment in which all opinions may be voiced and heard without judgment. In order for a safe space to be fully functioning, all opinions must be welcome at the table. This is a great framework for discussion, but in reality it is not hard to imagine that conservative viewpoints could be quite taboo in these situations. Yiannopoulos, responding to students demands for safe spaces on campus, makes the accusation that the guise of offensiveness is used as technique to suppress conservative opinion.

So why, then, are we not having these important conversations? Herein lies the catch-22 that Yiannopoulos has expertly concocted with his tour. As he travels to different universities, he intentionally provokes protest that in turn is documented and used as evidence of the regressive politics of the left. His event at DePaul, for example, will be recorded by Hypeline for use in Yiannopoulos upcoming film. This approach of being intentionally extremist in order to trigger those groups, supposedly to illuminate the intolerance of progressives, but in reality only makes the environment for discourse more divisive and fruitless. While it may be successful in inciting protest, he is using his speech not to contribute to the discussion but instead to make inflammatory, unsubstantiated claims with the explicit purpose of causing anger, essentially building a wall of animosity instead of promoting respect, tolerance and open discourse between ideologies. Its disturbingly hypocritical.

This criticism of protest also a form of free expression is dangerous rhetoric because it disparages civil disobedience, which is among the most established and respected forms of free speech in America. This message mirrors the sentiments of Trump, who mentioned in multiple rallies his nostalgia for the old days when protesters would be carried off on stretchers. This rhetoric detracts from the actual issues relating to the repression of freedom of speech at DePaul and other universities. While Yiannopoulos points the finger at college liberals, the reality is that DePaul and other universities have a history of censoring demonstrations from a wide range of ideologies. For example, in 2014, liberal DePaul students protest over alleged sexual violence in the athletic department was shut down after 20 minutes. In 2005, the university shut down the DePaul Conservative Alliances protest against affirmative action after just 40 minutes.

This is indicative of a larger political trend of protest suppression, which is the subject of a number of current social science studies. Political demonstrations are becoming increasingly censored by various government and private institutions which use permits as one tactic of preventing or minimizing speech that is counter to their agenda or ideology by regulating attendance, disallowing the posting of propaganda or simply denying permission outright.

We should be discussing these real barriers to speech that threaten the very existence of our democracy, but we are not doing so in a meaningful manner. This has everything to do with the unique and critical partisan division in political discourse right now in the United States. The relevance of Yiannopoulos tour is partly due to his mirroring of statements made by Trump about many of the same subgroups. Trumps exaggerative style, or as he calls it, a truthful hyperbole, is mimicked in Yiannopoulos tour, which features this same breaking of cultural norms by making obscene statements and offensive arguments. This discourse, it seems, is quickly becoming mainstream in right-wing political commentary.

If we are truly committed to open discourse and free expression on campus, we must remain open to all viewpoints and accept the reality that the opinions of others will sometimes make us uncomfortable. We must also exercise restraint and treat others with respect and dignity with consideration of painful circumstances. Most importantly, we must come together and try to understand our differences in an attempt to compromise, instead of allowing demagogues to further divide us.

Kyle McElroy is a member of the DePaul Chapter of The Roosevelt Institute.

DC UNIVERSE REBIRTH #1

DC Universe Rebirth #1 from DC Comics

Here it is, the beginning of a new era of DC Comics. These happen more and more these days, but this one feels different. Yes, like previous reboots/refreshs/resets, this one ties together story elements of DC Comics both past and present, weaving a a tangled tapestry of history and continuity. Yes, its got one of the craziest reveals to ever grace a superhero comic. Thats all true, but its more than that. Geoff Johns is pouring his heart out here, his love for the DC Universe is on full display. Same goes for Gary Frank, Ethan Van Sciver, and Ivan Reis, who all bring a sense of life and energy to the characters and their world. Time will tell if this big move pays off, but for now its hard to not be excited about the future of the DC Universe. The sky is the limit.

Captain America: Steve Rogers #1

Captain America: Steve Rogers #1 from Marvel Comics

Cap is back, Jack! Look, we all new that Steve Rogers was going to come back as Captain America, thats just the nature of superhero comics. We just didnt know exactly what Rogers coming back would mean for the Marvel Universe and the mantle of Captain America. Now, we know it means big changes. Yeah, hes got a new look and a new shield (seems wrong for Rogers to not have the original shield, but okay), but things start off as business as usual. In fact, the first half of this comic would have you believe things are back to normal, but the back half quickly proves thats all an illusion. No spoilers here, but Captain America is not alone, in more ways than one. The last page alone is worth the price of admission, and its one that will leave long time Cap fans with their jaws on the floor. Well be back for issue two, thats for sure. Plus, that Jesus Saiz can really draw. Holy cow, this is a pretty comic book.

DIVINITY II #2

Divinity II #2 from Valiant Comics

WrittenBy:Matt KindtArt By: Trevor Hairsine and Ryan WinnColorsBy: David BaronLettersBy: Dave Lanphear

Divinity II is insanity. Its a reality-shifting, time-jumping story that extends directly from the first Divinity and spins everything further than you thought it could go. Matt Kindt is writing a grand space opera here, a huge tale that is crushing the Valiant Universe under its thumb. We know the Stalinverse is coming, and this issue shows us how it is born. Trevor Hairsines fluid and graceful pencil work holds he issue together, jumping effortlessly from the center of the Earth to decades in the past. Divinity II #2 is the seed that just might destroy the Valiant Universe, but destruction never looked so good. Kindt and Hairsine are unstoppable, not that wed want to stop them from making magic such as this.

BLOODSHOT REBORN #13

Bloodshot Reborn #13 from Valiant Comics

WrittenBy:Jeff LemireArt By: Lewis Larosa and Stefano GaudianoColorsBy: Brian ReberLettersBy: Dave Lanphear

Speaking of insanity, you guys are reading Bloodshot Reborn, right? This thing is madness in comic book form, a trip into the demented mind of a character who clearly has a very, very small grasp on reality. Jeff Lemire has breathed so much life into this character he has somehow turned Valiants most forgettable title into a must-read book. This issue sees the end of The Analog Man storyline, and I have to say I didnt see the last few pages coming. Not by a mile. Its good stuff, and Lemire delivers it with confidence and swagger. It certainly helps that he has the incredible artist Lewis Larosa delivering epic page after epic page. Larosa does truly amazing things in this comic and his work is elevated even more thanks to the silky-smooth color work provided by Brian Reber. Valiant fan or not,Bloodshot Rebornshould be on your pull list.

Okay, thats it for usthis week. Check out the complete list below and let us know what your pull list looks like in the comments!

How "Inside Amy Schumer" Has Adjusted to its Star"s Ever-Increasing Celebrity

Inside Amy Schumer - Dr. Congress

Seemingly every new season of Inside Amy Schumerhas brought us the same question: What is Amy going to donow that shes gotten famous? Her profile has increased considerably each year that the sketch show has been on the air, and audiences are perpetually wondering how the show will be affected by that. Weve watched her gradually evolve from a favorite at the Comedy Central roasts to a full-fledged superstar who pals around with Jennifer Lawrence. In that context, its natural to wonder how that ever-increasing fame is going to affect the comedy of someone who is known for dark humor and has never cared too much for keeping the audience comfortable. Luckily, Amy and her writers have done a fine job handling these adjustments in stride, and the show has continued to be one of the most consistently uproarious comedies on television.

One of the most frequently covered aspects of this show has been its feminist-leaning tendencies. After the second season hinted at feminist concepts with sketches like Hello, MLady, which skewered nice guys who turned cruel at the first hint of rejection, season 3went into it full bore, with several sketches taking on explicitly feminist concepts. In the same episode, we saw the Football Town Nights sketch thatlooked at rape culture in high school, and Last Fuckable Day, a spot-on satire of Hollywood ageism. There was also the Emmy-winning song parody Girl, You Dont Need Makeup, which seemed to be a specific parody of One Directions What Makes You Beautiful but could be a stand-in for any song that attempted to appeal to female audiences with generic lines about how youre perfect just the way you are, without offering real substance. The twist that the boy band dudes change their mind after actually seeing her without makeup drove the point home perfectly. Looking at these sketches, it was clear that Schumer had embraced the idea that she was a voice for feminism in comedy, and was bringing that into her show on a regular basis.

And yet, none of these sketches could match the masterpiece of season3, the 12 Angry Men parody. This was an episode-length sketch focusing on the question of whether or not Schumer was hot enough to be on television. It followed the premise of the classic play note-for-note; in the beginning, only one juror thinks she is, then spends the rest of the episode convincing the jury to change their minds. This involves asking whether or not Schumer gives them a reasonable chub (a welcome addition to the lexicon), before eventually they all change their mind. This was Amy Schumer taking on sexism directly, and using her newfound fame as the platform to do it. Essentially, this was an entire episode dedicated to digging into the real meat of the rancid concepts those other sketches had only touched on briefly.

Really, the 12 Angry Men episode could have been an unmitigated disaster; to begin with, stretching out one sketch into an entire episode can be a huge problem if you dont have the material to back it up. More importantly, the sketch ran the risk of being excessively heavy-handed. Can 22 minutes of hearing why old-school objectification of women is bad and harmful really make for an entertaining comedy show, or will it leave viewers merely feeling chastened rather than entertained? Luckily, the sketch ended up being hilarious mostly because it used a light touch. The raging sexist attitudes that made up the jury room were presented as silly and out-of-touch rather than dangerous and menacing, similar to how the Hello MLady sketch succeeded by portraying potentially creepy guys as awkward and a bit douchey, but ultimately harmless rather than as a serious threat. These sketches expose the idiocy of sexism by portraying it as a ridiculous sideshow rather than as an imminent threat.

But while season3 established Schumers interest in feminist-minded comedy, a few key things happened in between the third and fourth seasons. The first was that Schumers feminism faced a backlash. Older jokes like I used to date a lot of Hispanic guys, but now I prefer consensual re-surfaced, causing people to ask whether hailing Schumer as a feminist comedy icon was a smart move. Now, theres a strong argument to be made that the punchline to that joke isnt all Latino men are rapists but rather can you believe how horrible and racist that thing I just said was? She was using irony as a way of mocking the foolishness of racism. Still, you get the feeling that when Schumer made the joke, she had no idea that she would eventually become either a major celebrity or someone who the world of social justice cared about. She didnt have to choose her words as carefully back then, and now, in light of her increased fame, it was coming back to bite her.

Still, it didnt hurt her that much, because the other major development that took place in between seasons was that Schumer became an even bigger celebrity than she was before. Trainwreckbecame a massive hit, she starred in a Super Bowl commercial, filmed a standup special at the Apollo, and began a standup tour where shes played at sports arenas for upwards of20,000 people. Rather than just being a star in the comedy world, Schumer has become a legitimate A-list celebrity. This couldnt help but lead to the question of whether or not she was too famous for cable TV. With season4 beginning, we had to wonder whether or not Schumer had become too much of a big fish for her current situation.

So far, that hasnt been a problem yet. Schumer has used her newfound celebrity to recruit other A-listers like Liam Neeson and Lin-Manuel Miranda. These sketches could have been exercises in vain look how famous I am narcissism, but they were both pretty d**n funny, with Amys attempt at writing her own version of Hamiltonparticularly drawing some major laughs. But while Schumer has had some fun palling around with celebrity friends, the show has also taken on a more serious tone at times as well.

The second episode of season4 began with a parody of QVC-type shows that was dedicated to selling guns. As the sketch goes on, it points out all of the dangerous gun loopholes that exist, while a list of pro-gun congressman appears on the screen. This sketch was clearly a direct reaction to a shooting that occurred at a showing of Trainwrecklast year. While Schumer may have held anti-gun views before, this tragedy undoubtedly affected her on a personal level, giving her the need to speak out about it. This sketch is funny at first, and certainly effective in making its point, but its the closest Inside Amy Schumer has ever come to being a bit too heavy-handed in its message. Still, considering how close this issue likely was to Schumers heart, she can be forgiven for being too on-the-nose just this once.

Elsewhere, the show has shown off its serious side in the Amy Goes Deep segments, which is often the least funny but most interesting part of the show. In season3, she interviewed trans activist and adult actress Bailey Jay, in an interview that was met with mixed reviews. Some criticized it for asking questions about trans people that they would rather not be asked, while others praised it for starting a much-needed dialogue. This season, she has continued to bring on guests from walks of life we might not otherwise think about. One of her best interviews with the series was with a woman with Down Syndrome. Schumer succeeded here by not condescending, and treating her like a human being. But while that segment was heartwarming, Schumer was also willing to get dark with the segment where she interviewed a sociopath. This person spoke openly about not empathizing, and described some pretty disturbing behavior of their childhood. Still, Schumer took the interview head on, never recoiling, and always keeping an open mind to what her guest had to say. If the criticism of Schumer after her old jokes started an internet controversy was that she was a typical White Feminist, the Amy Goes Deep segment is what can prove those assertions. Week by week, she has shown that there is no under-discussed aspect of humanity that she is not willing to provide a voice and representation to.

With Schumers celebrity status lurking in the shadows of her show, we cant help but wonder how much longer Inside Amy Schumer will be for this world. Still, while its here, its something we can appreciate. Schumer is using her celebrity to have fun with some of our favorite big stars, but more importantly, knowing she has one of the more popular comedies on basic cable, shes used her fame to give people we normally wouldnt hear from a chance to tell their stories. Most importantly of all, shes been able to take on more of an activist persona while not giving up the bawdy humor that made us love her in the first place.

Peter Thiel has a contrarian view of Shakespeare, too (VIDEO)

Peter Thiel Interview - Peter Thiel"s Top 10 Rules For Success

"When I was sitting where you are, back in 1989, I wouldve told you that I wanted to be a lawyer. I didnt really know what lawyers do all day, but I knew they first had to go to law school, and school was familiar to me," he said.

So he went to law school and got a very good job at a law firm, and soon after that almost landed a position as a Supreme Court clerk.

"This is sort of the top prize you can get as a lawyer. It was the absolute last stage of the competition. But I lost. At the time I was totally devastated. It seemed just like the end of the world," he said.

Instead, it led him to move to California and eventually help to found and lead PayPal.

"Looking back at my ambition to become a lawyer, it looks less like a plan for the future and more like an alibi for the present," Thiel said. "It was a way to explain to anyone who would ask to my parents, to my peers and most of all to myself that there was no need to worry. I was perfectly on track. But it turned out in retrospect that my biggest problem was taking the track without thinking really hard about where it was going."

While Thiel thought he was being true to what he wanted to do, he said he was actually doing what others had taught him he should want to do.

"At this moment in your life you know fewer limits, fewer taboos and fewer fears than you will ever in the future. So do not squander your ignorance," Thiel advised Hamilton"s grads. "Go out and do what your teachers and parents thought could not be done and what they never thought of doing."

Of course, Thiel also started his speech with the warning, "Like most graduation speakers my main qualification would seem to be that I am one of the few people who are even more clueless about what is going on in your lives than your parents and your professors."

A video of the complete Thiel speech is attached to this story.

Ozzy Osbourne: Wrong Michelle Pugh Singled Out As His Mistress

Who is Ozzy Osbourne"s Alleged Mistress, Michelle Pugh?

The marital problems of Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne have been all over celebrity news sites this week, and the name given for the woman with whom Ozzy had an affair is Michelle Pugh. Fans of the Osbournes have been angry with Pugh to say the least. They have targeted insults and accusations at her this week. Unfortunately, as reported by Hollywood Life, the Michelle Pugh they have been attacking is not the Michelle Pugh with whom Ozzy had an affair. And their attacks are hurting business for the wrong Michelle Pugh.

The woman who has been the object of Ozzy Osbourne fans is a nail tech from Washington. She found the confusion humorous at first, but once the attacks of Ozzy fans began hurting business, it wasnt funny anymore. Hollywood Life reports that

Once she started getting hateful direct messages and comments on social media, calling her a w***e and a homewrecker, she became annoyed.

She reportedly has blocked the offenders and deleted the messages accusing her of destroying the Osbourne marriage. That takes care of the personal injury. But it doesnt repair the damage done to her business.

The Beverly Hills hairdresser who did allegedly have an affair with Ozzy Osbourne went into hiding once her name became public.

As recently reported by the Inquisitr, Sharon Osbourne says that she discovered the affair after going through Ozzys emails. She confirmed that Ozzy was having an affair and that hairdresser Michelle Pugh was his mistress. Emails sent by Ozzy also indicated that he was supporting Pugh. Both Sharon and daughter Kelly tried to contact her at her place of business for a couple of weeks before the story went public. Earlier this week, the Osbournes were seen together at an event for Ozzys band. Some hoped this meant they were reuniting, but Sharon is still the band manager and appeared with Ozzy solely in that capacity, not as a gesture of forgiveness or reconciliation.

Ozzy was initially thrown out of his home but returned a couple of days later. In response, his wife moved out. It has been confirmed that she has spoken with a divorce attorney, but she indicated on The Talk this week that she has not made a final decision on the fate of her marriage. This is not the first time that she has discovered Ozzy was having an extramarital affair and says that this time is different because she doesnt feel she should have to live this way at 63-years-old.

Ozzy has been issued some conditions upon which a possible reconciliation ride. His wife is insisting that he do two things. The first is that Ozzy attend marriage counseling with her. The second is that he go to rehab for s*x addiction. Sharon has also chosen the facility that she feels would most benefit Ozzy Pine Grove, the facility Tiger Woods went to for s*x addiction treatment.

This is not the first time the Osbourne marriage has been on rocky ground. Sharon previously left Ozzy when his drug and alcohol abuse spiraled out of control. She left him at that time and insisted that he get treatment for substance abuse. Ozzy did as she wished, they reconciled, and he says he has been clean ever since.

Ozzy Osbourne was born on December 3, 1948, in Birmingham, England. He became famous as the lead man for the heavy metal band Black Sabbath. In the late 70s, he decided to pursue a solo career and became widely known for extreme behavior including urinating on the Alamo and biting off the head of a bite in his performances. Ozzy has three children from his marriage with Sharon Aimee, Kelly, and Jack.
