The 6 Best Movies to Buy or Stream This Week: "10 Cloverfield Lane," "45 Years"

10 Cloverfield Lane - Movie Review

One of last years best movies and two of this springs hit disc and streaming platforms this week, alongside two classics in spiffy new Criterion editions. And as a bonus to our usual five, weve got a recent (and excellent) documentary on the late, great Muhammad Ali, newly streaming on Netflix.

ON NETFLIX

The Trials of Muhammad Ali: The recent death of Muhammad Ali has prompted an understandable uptick in viewing of films about his life, and that lifewas certainly not one lacking immortalization; you can trace the bulk of Aliscareer through the scores of documentaries and biopics that have taken him as their subject. Bill Siegels 2013 portrait recently re-upped on Netflix is less concerned with him as a fighter than as a political figure, focusing primarily on Alis conversion to the Nation of Islam and his refusal to fight in Vietnam, which led to a three-and-a-half year legal battle and exile from the ring. As straight biography, its pretty familiar (and was dramatized, around the same time but from the Supreme Court POV, in the HBO movie Muhammad Alis Greatest Fight); the films value is in the detail paid to Alis development as a political thinker and provocateur, via copious (and often tense) clips from speaking engagements and television appearances. Ali was a great fighter, but he was also a fascinating man, and The Trials of Muhammad Ali pays him the compliment of viewing his life as a continuing philosophical evolution.

ON BLU-RAY/DVD/VOD

10 Cloverfield Lane: Dan Trachtenbergs sorta-sequel to producer J.J. Abramss 2008 Cloverfield is, for most of its running time, a dazzling, absorbing, sometimes unbearably tense thriller, an efficient and precise three-hander that rarely takes a false step or sounds a false note, with flawless performances by stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead (equal parts fierceness and vulnerability), John Gallagher Jr. (charming while resisting the urge to play up his characters simplicity), and particularly John Goodman (pivoting easily from folksy teddy bear and paranoid lunatic). It falls apart a bit at the end, in which the ongoing questions of what lurks outside their shelter door is answered and is, like so many of these things, a disappointment but that complaint aside, this is a smart, gripping piece of genre craftsmanship. (Includes audio commentary and featurettes.)

45 Years: Kate and Geoff Mercer are rock solid; they have an offhand intimacy, their gentle ribbing has decades of backstory, and theyre currently preparing for their 45th wedding anniversary. But a few days before, a letter arrives, and becomes a reminder of the complexity of each others secrets; you spend enough of your life with someone, and you can forget they had a life before you. That life becomes an obsession for Kate, magnificently played by Charlotte Rampling as a woman haunted by a ghost; Tom Courtenay is equally smashing as a man who realizes what hes doing to her, perhaps too late. The direction by Andrew Haigh (Weekend) is subtle and marvelous, keeping a respectful distance, and letting even the smallest moments pay enormous emotional dividends. (No special features.)

Eddie the Eagle: Director Dexter Fletcher tells the story of Eddie Edwards, the underdog hero of the 1988 Olympics, in a charmingly retro style; its a carefully constructed throwback, looking and sounding and playing like a movie not only set in the late 80s, but made then as well. Its just about the only way you can get away with this oft-told a tale by acknowledging that weve seen it all before (this isnt even the first movie about a plucky underdog at those Olympics; Calgary 88 was the year that gave us Cool Runnings Jamaican bobsled team). Some movies must overcome their clichs; this one embraces them, which veers it from moldy and trite to cheerfully knowing and impossible to dislike. (Includes featurette.)

ON BLU-RAY

Here Comes Mr. Jordan: Alexander Halls 1941 comedy (newly reissued by Criterion) concerns a prizefighter whose soul is pulled from his body just before seemingly certain death too soon, as it turns out, so the powers-that-be on high place his soul in the body of a millionaire as he tries to reconfigure his life. Its an ingenious premise (and often imitated, primarily via the remakes Heaven Can Wait and Down to Earth), and Halls film has a lot of fun laying out the rules of this world, and the logistics of its theology, which ends up engaging in thoughtful ruminations on faith and fate. Claude Rains is exquisite as the title character, the guy behind the guy in the afterlife, all elegance and patience; Robert Montgomery is the terrific lead, a likably wide-eyed lug. The straight romantic subplot is kind of a clunker (not unusual in comedies of this period), but its heart is true, and the conclusion is surprisingly effective, hopeful and melancholy in just the right portions. (Includes interviews, radio adaptation, and trailer.)

La Chienne: Jean Renoirs second sound film (also new from Criterion) is the story of an unhappily married loner who falls for a prostitute, and the pimp who encourages the relationship for his own gain. Renoirs surprisingly frank script explores the tension of exploitation, the dynamics that drive these relationships, and how messy it gets when they explode. Renoirs film and his camera move sparingly but deliberately, circling these people and waiting for this thing to go sideways, and arriving at a conclusion of true complexity, in which poetic justice and class privilege jockey for position. Haunting, frank, and remarkable. (Includes full-length television documentary, new introductions, vintage Renoir introduction, and new restoration of On purge bb Renoirs first sound film.)

Toddler snatched by alligator

Alligator Drags Off Boy at Disney Florida Resort

One witness themdialled911 at 9.16pm,Demingssaid. The mother and father, who at different points both ran into the water after the child, shouted for the help of a nearby lifeguard.

"The parents diligently tried to get the child,"Demingssaid.

Demingssaid that, according to witnesses, the family had set up a baby pen about 20 to 30 metresfrom the water on the sand, reported CNN. With the parents and two-year-old boy was a daughter, who is four, the network reported. A witness told CNN a movie was being screened on the beach Tuesday night.

There were no other people in the water at the time of the attack, according to authorities. Signs posted near the lake warn against swimming in it, reported the Orlando Sentinel, but there were no signs warning of alligators. The sheriff said there had been no recent reports of any nuisance alligators in the area, but questions about their presence in the lake will be part of the ongoing investigation.

"As a father, as a grandfather, we"re going to hope for the best in these circumstances,"Demingssaid. "But based upon my 35 years in law enforcement experience, we know we have some challenges ahead."

The GrandFloridianResort and Spa is nestled among Disney"s sprawling complex, positioned just south of the Magic Kingdom theme park in the Orlando area. It stretches along the west side of the Seven Seas Lagoon, a man-made lake that park visitors cross on ferries in route to the Magic Kingdom.

"Victorian elegance meets modern sophistication at this lavish bayside Resort hotel," reads the GrandFloridiandescription online. "Relax in the sumptuous lobby as the live orchestra plays ragtime, jazz and popular Disney tunes. Bask on the white-sand beach, indulge in a luxurious massage and watch the fireworks light up the sky over Cinderella Castle."

Demingstold reporters that, according to records, this was the first alligator attack at Disney.

"Everyone here at the Walt Disney World resort is devastated by this tragic accident," a Disney official told reporters. "Our thoughts are with the family. We are helping the family and doing everything we can to assist law enforcement."

AJJainand his wife, resort guests from Georgia, were on the same beach with friends near the scene of the attack Tuesday night, reported the Orlando Sentinel.

"I"m just here to say a prayer,"Jainsaid. "I can"t imagine what those parents are going through. It"s been one tough week in Orlando."

In March 1997, a 3-year-old New Smyrna Beach boy was killed by a 200-kilogram alligator that grabbed him and dragged him into Lake Ashby in Volusia County as he walked on the shore with his dog. Officials believe the 3.3-metre gator was attracted by the dog. Adam Trevor Binford was pulled under the surface and drowned. Wildlife officials shot the alligator, which was still holding the boy"s body 20 hours later.

This attack is the third tragedy to strike the Orlando area in less than a week. Last Friday, 22-year-old ChristinaGrimmie, a former finalist on NBC"s "The Voice," was shot and killed by a deranged fan while signing autographs after a concert in the city. Less than 48 hours later, 49 people were massacred and 53 were injured inside an Orlando gay nightclub in the deadliest mass shooting in UShistory.

"We"re doing our best to deal with all of the situations we have going on here,"Demingstold reporters Wednesday. "Our staff is very resilient, and tonight they"re very focused, if you will, on assisting this family."

Flag Day 2016: How to properly display the American flag

2016 Am. Samoa Flag Day – Parade (vid 2)

Note: This story was originally publishedin 2015.

Today is Flag Day.

The national observance commemorates the adoption by Congress of the Stars and Stripes as the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777, according to theNational Flag Day Foundation.

The observance originated with a Wisconsin teacher who on June 14, 1885, placed a flag in a bottle on his desk and assigned students to write essays on the flag and its significance. That teacher, Bernard Cigrand, spent many years seeking national recognition of Flag Day. President Wilson on May 16, 1916, issued a proclamation for the national observance of Flag Day. In 1949, President Truman signed an act of Congress designating the 14th day of June every year as National Flag Day.

The National Flag Code outlines the proper handling and display of the United States Flag.

If you are planning to fly your Stars and Stripes on Friday, here are some things to remember about proper handling fromwww.usflag.org:

  • The flag customarily is displayed from sunrise to sunset but it can be displayed 24 hours a day if it is lighted at night. It should not be displayed during inclement weather.
  • The flag should be hoisted briskly.
  • When displayed from a staff projecting horizontally or at an angle from the window sill, balcony or front of a building, the union of the flag should be placed at the peak of the staff unless the flag is at half staff. When the flag is suspended over a sidewalk from a rope extending from a house to a pole at the edge of the sidewalk, the flag should be hoisted out, union first, from the building.
  • The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.
  • The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor or water.
  • The flag should never be carried flat or horizontally, but always aloft and free.
  • The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free.
  • The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.

For more information on flag etiquette, go to www.usflag.org.

Buffalo"s relationship with OJ Simpson these days? It"s complicated

O.J. Simpson Infamously Trying On Gloves At Trial

Until it was announced that Bruce Smith would join him on Sept. 15, Jim Kelly had been the only Buffalo Bills player to have his jersey number retired by the franchise. Some historic franchises such as the Chicago Bears have retired as many as 13 players numbers; others with rich traditions, such as the Dallas Cowboys and Oakland Raiders, have zero retired numbers.

But its impossible to write the history of the long moribund Bills franchise without the name Orenthal James Simpson somewhere on the first page. So even with five other Bills players in the Pro Football Hall of Fame who spent the majority of their careers in Buffalo its a bit stunning that Simpsons number was never retired at any point after his retirement from football.

[Yahoo Fantasy Football is open for the 2016 season. Sign up now]

Before Smith and Kelly arrived, Simpson unquestionably was the greatest Bills player ever. He still might be to some. But those thoughts are somewhat hushed and often conflicted now.

Kelly and Smith can joke about it now. Even if its still a bit awkward of a punchline years later.

Bruce goes, You got your number retired and youre not even the best Buffalo Bill ever, Kelly said, via the Buffalo News. I said, I know, O.J.s in jail. I had to throw that at Bruce. I thought Thurman [Thomas] should have gotten his number retired before Bruce.

Kelly was kidding. The audience roared. But some might have cringed when reading the words.

You have to dig to find Simpsons name on the Buffalo Bills official website. Yet hes a member of the teams Hall of Fame and Wall of Fame. But you cant buy a Simpson No. 32 jersey either on the teams site or on the NFL.com shop.

Still, those Simpson No. 32 jerseys show up at Bills games every week and were considered hot collectibles at one point. But then again, O.J. wasnt named to the franchises fan-voted 50th anniversary team in 2009; Thurman Thomas was the pick at running back.

Its a complicated relationship for sure.

Its schizophrenic, said Gene DiFrancesco, a Buffalo native and lifelong Bills fan.One camp believes he did it and should be taken off the stadiums Wall of Fame. Another camp is in denial. And the last camp privately loves him, maintained relations and would invite him to their luxury boxes after the trial.

It, of course, was the double homicide of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman in 1994. And the trial that followed, O.J. Simpson being charged for their murders, has since been called the trial of the century. The fact that were talking about it more than 20 years later with such fascination, highlighted by FXs The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story and ESPNs O.J.: Made in America 30 For 30 series, which is showing this week, says a lot.

Simpsons celebrity had a few clear stages. The first came at USC in winning the Heisman Trophy. The second was his Bills career, launched to its height during his epic 1973 season. Then it was his fame on the big screen as a Hertz pitch man, an NFL analyst and also as a movie star. And, of course, the trial and everything since. It"s the last part that"s the trickiest to figure out especially now in his predominant NFL city.

But back in his Buffalo heyday, there were few bigger, more significant athletes to that region than Simpson.

He was a star, said Chuck Frawley, the treasurer and past president of the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame. He was a big thing for this community. He took a team that was near the bottom and added a lot of life to this area.

A Buffalo resident the past 50 years, Frawley watched Simpson rise to stardom on an off the field and he was a no-brainer charter member for the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame in its first class back in 1991.

It was a slam dunk, Frawley said. There were a couple of absolutes our first year, and he was one of them. O.J. Simpson, Warren Spahn, Bob Lanier, Gilbert Perreault those were the Mt. Rushmore guys in Buffalo sports history.

Three years later, Simpsons ex-wife and companion were killed, changing the narrative for Bills fans. His spot in the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame is safe, but its not as if it wasnt up for debate.

We talked about removing him, yes, Frawley admitted. It wasnt something we agonized over, but it did come up before it was dismissed. We said, Hey, hes in based on his athletic achievements and thats what our organization is about. Does it tarnish it a little bit? Sure. But were not going to take him out.

We may perhaps downplay him. We dont necessarily put him high on the list when were talking about who our Hall of Famers are. Hes not at the top of the list on our promotional items, lets put it that way.

After all, its possible that Simpson killed two people, even after he was found not guilty in a court of law (though later found guilty in a civil trial). Thats what ultimately has made his relationship with the Bills so complex.

As the ESPN feature has shown so far, Simpson was eventually viewed as a savior to long-suffering Bills fans. And as this quote from an NFL executive to Sports Illustrateds John Underwood at the end of the 1975 season showed, Simpsons impact on Buffalo and the Bills franchise even as he neared the twilight of his career there couldnt be overstated:

Simpson is the first athlete since Babe Ruth to have a stadium built for him [the 80,020-seat Rich Stadium in Buffalo], and when they filled it they filled it for Simpson, not the mediocre team the Bills had then. They still fill it for Simpson.

It can be a bit of a hardscrabble existence in western New York, and the 1990s were a strange time there. As the Kelly-led Bills reached unseen heights for the franchise (but never winning the big one), the area felt like a bit of a national dumping ground. Unemployment rates rose well beyond the national average in 1992, approaching 10 percent. Then came three national stories of ignominy with direct local ties that dragged the area even more into the dirt.

John Wayne Bobbitt, a resident of nearby Niagara Falls, had his p***s cut off by his wife in 1993 in an international joke of a story. Simpson took the national and international spotlight the following year. And in 1995, Timothy McVeigh (from nearby Pendleton, N.Y.) became famous after he was arrested and eventually convicted and executed for his role in the Oklahoma City bombing that killed 168 people and injured several hundred more.

Even with Simpsons acquittal that fall, this local infamy felt like something of a cruel joke. It wasnt exactly cool to be from Buffalo.

Weve had it hard. That city had has it hard, said Michael Krajacic, chapter president of the Bills Backers of Syracuse. "People suffer for so long, and it changes them. [It] changes how they see things."

Krajacic, 63, grew up watching every game, every play of Simpsons career. For the first 30 years of the franchise history, one name was above all others, he said.

We didnt have the Super Bowls yet, either, so he was what we were clinging to, Krajacic said.

But even with the teams success and with Simpsons trial in the early-to-mid 1990s, Krajacic said he and his closest of Bills fans only grew stronger in their support of their hero.

We were staunchly behind him in the trial, Krajacic said. Twenty years ago, we were a lot younger and he was an ultimate hero. To this point, we can still make the case that he was innocent of the murders and that it was a setup. We have investigated all kinds of theories, where drugs were involved and this and that.

I believe that theres still the possibility that hes not guilty.

The possibility loaded words indeed. Krajacic almost seems to personify the ambivalence that exists in many other Bills fans hearts, especially the ones of his generation. There are scores of Bills fans now who were not even alive when Simpson played; they only know him from the trial or from the recent TV series. But for those of a certain age, Simpson at one point represented a beacon of light in dark times.

When Simpson was arrested in 2007 and eventually convicted for his role in a Las Vegas robbery at the hotel room of a sports memorabilia dealer, Krajacics thoughts did change a bit, although not completely.

At this point in time, it seems like hes in jail for fighting for his reputation, Krajacic said. He just went a little bit overboard. Hes a hero, but hes a fallen hero.

Simpson does come up in discussion occasionally, Krajacic said, when he and his group meets weekly during the football season to watch games. Especially now, following the 20th anniversaries of the murder and the trial, and the big-production television series that have followed.

But even with the conflict in his and others minds, Krajacic stands behind the man who helped build Buffalo Bills football and he believes that most want to believe Simpson was innocent of the murders.

I think theres a desire to think that way for most of them. Some of them are more realistic than others, he said laughing, but I am not one of them.

Italy vs. Belgium live stream: Game time, TV schedule and how to watch Euro 2016 online

Funny Gianluigi Buffon FAIL. Swinging on a crossbar - Italy vs Belgium 2-0 EURO 2016

Valerio Pennicino/Getty Images

Through the first three days of the 2016 European Championships, every Juventus player that has stepped onto the field has seen his respective country win. Paul Pogba and Patrice Evra? Win with France. Stephan Lichtsteiner, the new captain of Switzerland, a winner. Germany, captained by Brother Sami Khedira, were winners.

Now comes the tricky part.

Both of the Euro 2012 finalists are taking the field today. And it"s safe to say that both of those countries, Italy and Spain, are not in the same shape they were four years ago. Key players are either show their signs of being four years older or completely retired. While Spain has the luxury of an influx of young talent at its disposal, Italy partly due to injuries, too arrives in France with an uninspiring roster than

Seriously, Thiago Motta is Italy"s No. 10. Seriously.

This is our first chance to see if Antonio Conte can work his magic and transform a meh squad into something that can, well, do something at the Euros. With who he has brought to France, not many people are expecting the Azzurri to do much of anything. A trip to the final for the second straight Euro tournament? Nah, not really. That"s just what happens when people see your likely starting strikers for your opening game are going to be Graziano Pelle and Eder.

Here"s to hoping Gigi Buffon and that BBC defense in front of him just shuts everybody out and Italy just grinds out a bunch of 1-0 wins. That"s what all the cliches say, right? Those crazy Italians sure do know how to defend!
