Alligator Attacks Can Be Deadly But Are Quite Rare

Florida has an estimated alligator population of more than a million.

The alligator attack that killed a two-year-old Nebraska boy at a Disney resort in Florida was a tragic, rare incident in a state with the nation"s second-largest alligator population.

This is Florida"s second fatal alligator attack since October 2015, but before that, the state had avoided a deadly encounter for seven yearsthe longest stretch sincethe statestarted keeping records onsuchattacks. In response, Disney has closed access to the beaches and lagoons throughout its Orlando park.

Florida has an estimated alligator population of more than a million, based on some 6.7 million acres of suitable habitat, including rivers, lakes, swamps, and marshes.

Despite alligators prevalence, the chances of getting bitten by one are minute: The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission estimates that a state residents odds of being seriously injured in an unprovoked alligator incident are roughly one in 2.4 million.

Officials scour the Disney grounds for the child and alligator.

Orange County Sheriff Jerry L.Demings said Wednesday that the boy"s remains were found intact near the sandy beach where he was last seen alive with his family. His likely cause of death was drowning, after the alligator dragged him into the water.

Wildlife officials have yet to identify the alligator that killed the child, but have captured and killed five alligators found in the lagoon near the beach. Forensics work, including analyses of the alligators" bite marks, will determine which alligator was responsibleor if the alligator in question is still in the lagoon.

"Although we have some closure, the investigation is ongoing," says Nick Wiley, director of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. "We"re going to make certain that we have the alligator that"s involved...or we"re going to continue to look for the alligator until we find the right one."

American alligators have lived on Earth for more than 150 million years, and males average 10 to 15 feet (three to 4.6 meters) in length. Learn more about alligators.

The sheer number of alligators in Florida represents a conservation success story. From the late 1800s through the 1950s, American alligators were hunted to near-extinction for their meat and hide, which was considered a high-quality leather. Historical estimates suggest thatat least six million alligators were killed in Florida and neighboring Louisiana from 1880 to 1955. In 1967, the American alligator was placed on the endangered species list, and after two decades of concerted effort, populations rebounded, leading to its removal from the list in 1987.

As Florida"s human population has grown alongside the thriving alligators, the frequency of attacks has increased. In 2015, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission estimated that the frequency of serious bites increases at a rate of about 3 percent per year.

From 1948 to April 2016, Florida has endured 383 recorded incidents in which a wild alligator bit a person seriously enough to require at least first aid, accordingto a database maintained by the commission. The database does not include incidents in which humans were handling or harassing alligators.

Of the 383 incidents, 257 are classified as major bites, meaning that they required medical attention beyond first aid. Twenty-three of the 257 major bites ended fatally, either from thealligator attack directly or from secondary infections. Of the fatal attacks, at least 15 occurred when the victim was swimming, snorkeling, or wading in the edges of a body of water.

There has beenonly one confirmed fatality since 2008: the October 2015 death of a 61-year-old man killed while snorkeling inBlue Spring State Park, in Orange City, Florida. The seven-year stretch had been Floridas longest without a fatal alligator attack.

Alligators are opportunistic carnivores, preferring to go after readily available and easily overpowered prey. The reptiles generally dont attack for reasons other than food and rarely pursue humans.

In fact, alligators tend to be naturally afraid of humans, but they may lose that fearand associate humans with foodwhen people feed them. For this reason, its illegal in the state of Florida to feed wild alligators.

How Brock Turner and Oscar Pistorius" defence teams tried to elicit sympathy for their clients

Oscar Pistorius sentence hearing, 15 June 2016

AS OSCAR Pistorius hobbled around a South African courtroom without his prosthetic legs, tears streaming down his face, he looked like a vulnerable, broken man.

This week during his sentencing hearing, Pistorius defence team have tried to elicit sympathy from the judge by painting their client as a man who deserves leniency.

The double amputee Olympic athlete was last year convicted of murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentines Day in 2013, and faces a minimum 15-year jail term.

On Wednesday, Pistorius defence lawyer asked his client to remove his prostheses and show the judge how difficult it is for him to walk unassisted.

Wearing sportswear emblazoned with the logos of his former sponsor Nike, Pistorius was unsteady at times, holding onto wooden desks and helped by a woman at one point. He then returned to a bench where he sat alone, head bowed, and wiped away tears. The demonstration drew gasps from some onlookers in the courtroom.

I dont want to overplay disability, his lawyer Barry Roux said, but the time has come that we must just look [at Pistorius] with different eyes.

On Monday defence psychologist Dr Jonathan Scholtz argued time in prison would not be psychologically or socially constructive and that Pistorius was not a threat to society.

One would describe him as broken. In my opinion his current condition warrants hospitalisation, Dr Scholtz said.

Since 2013, he becomes traumatised when he hears the sound of gunfire He never wants to touch a firearm again.

Broken is also how convicted rapist Brock Turner described himself, after he was found guilty of sexually assaulting a 22-year-old woman at Stanford University in 2015.

My shell and core of who I am as a person is forever broken from this. I am a changed person, Turner wrote in a statement submitted to a Californian court.

Former Stanford student Brock Turner appears in a California courtroom. Picture: Karl Mondon/San Jose Mercury News via APSource:AP

He blamed alcohol, college party culture and sexual promiscuity for what happened that night, and mourned the loss of his reputation.

The night of January 17th changed my life and the lives of everyone involved forever. I can never go back to being the person I was before that day, he wrote.

I am no longer a swimmer, a student, a resident of California, or the product of the work that I put in to accomplish the goals that I set out in the first nineteen years of my life.

Ive lost my ability to obtain a Stanford degree. Ive lost employment opportunity, my reputation and most of all, my life.

Both Turner and Pistorius have refused to take responsibility for their actions, never apologised, and continue to see themselves as victims. The narrative perpetuated by their defence teams is that time in jail could have no positive benefit the court of public opinion and trial by media has been damaging enough.

Lorraine Finlay from Murdoch Universitys School of Law says this tactic in common during sentencing.

They focus on the defender and his personal attributes. With Turner it was the fact he was an elite swimmer and with Pistorius that he was a Paralympian, she told news.com.au.

They highlight anything in their background that makes the judge think of them as a person who deserves a second chance, rather than them being totally defined by the crime theyve committed. The problem with that is we forget about the victim.

Stunts like getting Pistorius to take his prostheses off allow the judge to see the defendant as a human, not a criminal.

Oscar Pistorius breaks down in court as he listens to testimony inside the dock. Picture: Kim Ludbrook/AFPSource:AFP

Its a real example of his vulnerability. Its one thing to write on paper This man will face heightened risks in jail, but its another to see it right in front of you.

Its important that a sentence is tailored to the individual, and in some cases convicted criminals are given a second chance if they show remorse and show a strong promise of rehabilitation.

They deserve the opportunity to be rehabilitated, said Ms Finlay. Theres nothing wrong with painting a full story of your client, but we need to make sure the full story of the victim and the reality of what happened isnt lost in the process.

But when the crime is that serious, like with Turner and Pistorius, there are limits to how far that can go. Brock Turner might be a lovely person, but he committed a horrific crime that changes his victims life forever, and you cant go back from that.

Argentina vs. Bolivia | Copa America Centenario Match Preview

Argentina vs. Bolivia | 2016 Copa America Highlights

Argentina vs. BoliviaCopa America Centenario | Group DJune 14 | 10 pm ET | CenturyLink Field, SeattleTV: FS1, UniMs, UDN

Argentina will try to finish group play with a perfect 3-0-0 record when they take on Group D stragglers Bolivia on Tuesday night.

La Albicelestewill be prohibitive favorites against their South American rivals, who lost both of their first two matches and have already been eliminated from contention for the knockout stages. A win or a draw would seal Group D for Leo Messi and friends, and they could even secure the top spot with a loss pending the result of the preceding Chile-Panama match.

Will Messi get a start?

After missing Argentinas opener against Chile due to a back injury, Messi got his tournament off to a torrid start against Panama last week, coming on for the final 30 minutes and scoring a hat trick in their 5-0 victory.

Manager Gerardo Martino said Messi will play on Tuesday night, but didnt commit to starting the Barcelona superstar.

Messi will play in the game, Martino said, in his pregame press conference. We will do what we believe [best], according to the opinion of the player and the doctor. It seems to me that Leo lost his fear in the game against Panama. [When scoring his first goal] Leo made a run at speed and he felt more comfortable, much better in the game. As the days pass he will feel even better still.

Di Maria in doubt

Messi isnt the only Argentina star with an injury concern. Paris Saint-Germain winger Angel Di Maria left Fridays win against Panama late in the first half due to an adductor injury and, despite making a partial return to training on Monday, is unlikely to play on Tuesday.

Ive seen him running around the pitch, and I see him in good spirits as well, Martino said. But I cant tell you when he will be available to play.

Regardless of whether or not they finish first or second in Group D, Argentina will play in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Martino didnt yet know if Di Maria would be available for that game.

Battling Bolivia

Theyre already out of the running for the Knockouts, but Bolivia have been feisty in both of their first two Copa America Centenario matches. They entered the final minutes of both of their games tied at 1-1, but allowed an 87th-minute Blas Perez strike in their 2-1 opening loss against Panama and were buried by a 100th-minute (yes, you read that right) penalty in Fridays 2-1 loss to Chile.

Boliviawill hope to put up a similar fight against Argentina in their Copa finale on Tuesday night.La Albicelesteare a different animal, however, andBolivia will need to be at their sharpest just to keep it close.

Animal Kingdom premiere recap: "Pilot" / "We Don"t Hurt People"

Table Read - He"s In | Animal Kingdom | TNT

If gritty crime dramas with hunky men and mommy issues are your thing, theres a good chance youre going to go crazy for Animal Kingdom. Loosely adapted from the 2010 Australian film of the same name though more closely resembling a TV version of Point Break than anything else TNTs Animal Kingdom is steeped in California noir goodness. Theres coke, neon lights, sunny beaches, weed, robberies, violence, and Ellen Barkin. What more could you ask for?

The premiere certainly gets right down to business, with paramedics showing up at an apartment and responding to a woman dying from a heroin overdose while her son sits on the couch with a nonchalant look on his face. Its obvious hes been here before, though this time is different. The boy is Josh, a.k.a. J, and this time his mom, Julia, doesnt recover. After she dies, J ends up calling his grandmother (Ellen Barkin), known affectionately as Smurf, for a place to stay.

Smurf comes to pick up her grandson, and smuggles away some drugs while shes at it. As J is about to leave, hes confronted by his moms dealer, whos asking for money hes owed. J doesnt tell him his Mom died, but he doesnt pay him either. Its a small moment, but one that leads to a bigger turning point later in the episode.

When J is brought back to his grandmothers place, we get a glimpse at the life she and her sons are living. Theres a pool, nice cars, plenty of TVs, and money lying around the house. It seems like theyre living the dream, especially compared to the relative squalor J was used to, but its clear that everythings not exactly on the up-and-up. Still, Js uncles set him up in a room, bring him a TV, and give him some money to buy new shoes.

As it turns out, Js extended family are a bunch of criminals, mostly running robbery jobs. Smurfs in charge and her boys do the grunt work. Smurf wants to bring J into the fold for the next operation, which is set to go down in a few days, but her boys arent so sure. They dont know a thing about J and arent sure if they can trust him.

Still, the uncles are trying to make J feel at home, in their own twisted, criminally inclined way. They take him surfing, where they intentionally p**s off other surfers before getting J to pull a gun and show that hes manly enough, that he can hold his own with the big boys. J is clearly reluctant, but what choice does he have?

Back at home, J discovers the room hes staying in isnt exactly his. It belonged to Pope (Shawn Hatosy), another one of Smurfs sons, who was sent to prison for three years for robbing a bank. Hes back home now and not entirely excited to see J in his room. The feeling seems mutual. J is wary of the man and so is Smurf, whos fairly reserved for someone whose boy just got out of prison.

When J isnt spending time being slightly mystified and terrified of his uncles, hes hanging out with his girlfriend, Nicky. After some foreplay that J isnt into (ya know, because of the whole dead-mom thing), they start talking about his moms death and where hes living. As the episode progresses, its hinted that Nickys about to get roped into this criminal lifestyle alongside J, if shes not careful.

Opinion: OnePlus finally nailed it with the OnePlus 3, but they still have work to do

OnePlus 3 | 6GB RAM | Worth the Wait? Opinions not Review

OnePlus has had an interesting history to say the least. Yesterday the company launched itsfourthsmartphone, the OnePlus 3, and its actually really impressive. It packs powerfulspecs, great hardware, and an incredibly low price tag. The company still has some seriouswork to do, however.

First things first, lets talk the OnePlus 3sspecs. Youll have a 5.5-inch Optic AMOLED 1080p display (which is really just SuperAMOLED), a Snapdragon 820 processor, a whopping 6GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage. It also has an all-metal design and a custom build of Android Marshmallow out of the box, all for $399. Sounds good right? Of course it does!

At first glance the OnePlus 3 looks like an amazing device, but awesome specs with a low price doesnt make it the perfect phone. Theres a lot more behind the scenes that OnePlus will need to worry about.

One thing that the company will need to handle is demand, something we honestly dont know if they can do. Every smartphone launch theyve had to date has launched with an invite system. Doing this reduced the amount of phones the company had to ship at any given time. Rather than getting 100,000 orders in a day that need to be shipped out ASAP, the invite system keptthings at a much more manageable level.

OnePlus says theyve made some major expansions to their support staff in order to cope with extra demand and assist customers. They also said that theyve learned a lot in managing inventory and they feel theyll be able to handle the demand. A day into sales the phone isnt out of stock yet, so things seem to be fine so far.

Another arguably more important obstacle theyll need to worry about is software updates. Looking back at previous devices, OnePlus has never been quick on updating to new Android versions, despite their near stock software build. The best example of this is the OnePlus 2. It launched with Android Lollipop, which was released in late 2014.

The OnePlus 2 was released on July 28th, 2015. Later that year in early December, Google released Android Marshmallow for Nexus devices and slowly but surely OEMs began updating their devices. While OEMs like LG, HTC, and even Samsung kicked off their rollouts for the new OS within a couple of months, OnePlus took over 6 months to push an official OTA back on June 5th. Even worse, OnePlusaffordable OnePlus X hasnt seen any big updates at all, and the company hasnt even mentioned that theyll be working on one. Update: As noted by a readeron this post, OnePlus has noted that they are working on an update for the OnePlus X.

To make the OnePlus 3 a phone that can really be considered a great buy, OnePlus needs to support the phone. On their Reddit AMA yesterday the company did confirm that they will be supporting the device both in terms of security updates and regular software updates, however they didnt make any promises regarding speed except that they are working hard to deliver updates as fast as possible.

At the end of the day, OnePlus has done a great job with the OnePlus 3 and learned a lot from their past smartphones, but to stick the landing they need to handle demand for the phone and support its software for a while to come. As OnePlus is known for, the OnePlus 3 packs some beastly specs for just $399, but as weve also seen with OnePlus, that doesnt always make a great phone. At least the OnePlus 3 has NFC.

Did you pick up the OnePlus 3? Are you planning to do so? Drop a comment below and let us know your thoughts!

The 6 Best Movies to Buy or Stream This Week: "10 Cloverfield Lane," "45 Years"

10 Cloverfield Lane - Movie Review

One of last years best movies and two of this springs hit disc and streaming platforms this week, alongside two classics in spiffy new Criterion editions. And as a bonus to our usual five, weve got a recent (and excellent) documentary on the late, great Muhammad Ali, newly streaming on Netflix.

ON NETFLIX

The Trials of Muhammad Ali: The recent death of Muhammad Ali has prompted an understandable uptick in viewing of films about his life, and that lifewas certainly not one lacking immortalization; you can trace the bulk of Aliscareer through the scores of documentaries and biopics that have taken him as their subject. Bill Siegels 2013 portrait recently re-upped on Netflix is less concerned with him as a fighter than as a political figure, focusing primarily on Alis conversion to the Nation of Islam and his refusal to fight in Vietnam, which led to a three-and-a-half year legal battle and exile from the ring. As straight biography, its pretty familiar (and was dramatized, around the same time but from the Supreme Court POV, in the HBO movie Muhammad Alis Greatest Fight); the films value is in the detail paid to Alis development as a political thinker and provocateur, via copious (and often tense) clips from speaking engagements and television appearances. Ali was a great fighter, but he was also a fascinating man, and The Trials of Muhammad Ali pays him the compliment of viewing his life as a continuing philosophical evolution.

ON BLU-RAY/DVD/VOD

10 Cloverfield Lane: Dan Trachtenbergs sorta-sequel to producer J.J. Abramss 2008 Cloverfield is, for most of its running time, a dazzling, absorbing, sometimes unbearably tense thriller, an efficient and precise three-hander that rarely takes a false step or sounds a false note, with flawless performances by stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead (equal parts fierceness and vulnerability), John Gallagher Jr. (charming while resisting the urge to play up his characters simplicity), and particularly John Goodman (pivoting easily from folksy teddy bear and paranoid lunatic). It falls apart a bit at the end, in which the ongoing questions of what lurks outside their shelter door is answered and is, like so many of these things, a disappointment but that complaint aside, this is a smart, gripping piece of genre craftsmanship. (Includes audio commentary and featurettes.)

45 Years: Kate and Geoff Mercer are rock solid; they have an offhand intimacy, their gentle ribbing has decades of backstory, and theyre currently preparing for their 45th wedding anniversary. But a few days before, a letter arrives, and becomes a reminder of the complexity of each others secrets; you spend enough of your life with someone, and you can forget they had a life before you. That life becomes an obsession for Kate, magnificently played by Charlotte Rampling as a woman haunted by a ghost; Tom Courtenay is equally smashing as a man who realizes what hes doing to her, perhaps too late. The direction by Andrew Haigh (Weekend) is subtle and marvelous, keeping a respectful distance, and letting even the smallest moments pay enormous emotional dividends. (No special features.)

Eddie the Eagle: Director Dexter Fletcher tells the story of Eddie Edwards, the underdog hero of the 1988 Olympics, in a charmingly retro style; its a carefully constructed throwback, looking and sounding and playing like a movie not only set in the late 80s, but made then as well. Its just about the only way you can get away with this oft-told a tale by acknowledging that weve seen it all before (this isnt even the first movie about a plucky underdog at those Olympics; Calgary 88 was the year that gave us Cool Runnings Jamaican bobsled team). Some movies must overcome their clichs; this one embraces them, which veers it from moldy and trite to cheerfully knowing and impossible to dislike. (Includes featurette.)

ON BLU-RAY

Here Comes Mr. Jordan: Alexander Halls 1941 comedy (newly reissued by Criterion) concerns a prizefighter whose soul is pulled from his body just before seemingly certain death too soon, as it turns out, so the powers-that-be on high place his soul in the body of a millionaire as he tries to reconfigure his life. Its an ingenious premise (and often imitated, primarily via the remakes Heaven Can Wait and Down to Earth), and Halls film has a lot of fun laying out the rules of this world, and the logistics of its theology, which ends up engaging in thoughtful ruminations on faith and fate. Claude Rains is exquisite as the title character, the guy behind the guy in the afterlife, all elegance and patience; Robert Montgomery is the terrific lead, a likably wide-eyed lug. The straight romantic subplot is kind of a clunker (not unusual in comedies of this period), but its heart is true, and the conclusion is surprisingly effective, hopeful and melancholy in just the right portions. (Includes interviews, radio adaptation, and trailer.)

La Chienne: Jean Renoirs second sound film (also new from Criterion) is the story of an unhappily married loner who falls for a prostitute, and the pimp who encourages the relationship for his own gain. Renoirs surprisingly frank script explores the tension of exploitation, the dynamics that drive these relationships, and how messy it gets when they explode. Renoirs film and his camera move sparingly but deliberately, circling these people and waiting for this thing to go sideways, and arriving at a conclusion of true complexity, in which poetic justice and class privilege jockey for position. Haunting, frank, and remarkable. (Includes full-length television documentary, new introductions, vintage Renoir introduction, and new restoration of On purge bb Renoirs first sound film.)

What"s On Tonight: "Animal Kingdom," "Uncle Buck," And "Wrecked" Premiere

Disney"s Animal Kingdom 2014 Tour and Overview - Walt Disney World HD

TNT

Animal Kingdom (TNT, 9:00/10:00 p.m.) If youre an Australian film fan, youll probably recognize TNTs latest drama Animal Kingdom. Its based on a movie of the same name starring Joel Edgerton and Bloodlines Ben Mendelsohn. The series (like the film) centers on a family of criminals and follows a teen named J who plunges into danger when he moves in with his wild relatives in a surf community. With Ellen Barkin and Scott Speedman fronting it, this series may just be TNTs first genuinely great prestige drama.

Uncle Buck (ABC, 9:00 p.m.) This series is based on the 1989 John Candy film of the same name. In it, Uncle Buck was a lazy free-loader with a gambling problem. ABCs looking to modernize the story by having Mike Epps play Buck as a street smart hustler. The two-part season premiere sees Buck moving into his brothers house and struggling to adjust to suburban life. When hes left to look after his brothers kids, his unconventional parenting techniques cause problems (and a lot of laughs).

Wrecked (TBS, 10:00 p.m.) After a commercial flight crash-lands on an island, the survivors of the crash must work together to survive. If youre getting some Lost flashbacks, we dont blame you. This TBS comedy, which premieres tonight, is a parody of the Damon Lindelof drama, one filled with a bunch of hopeless morons. Its also actually pretty funny.

Americas Got Talent (NBC, 8:00 p.m.) Doubtful well discover the next Taylor Swift tonight, but a new crop of contestants are willing to give it a try.

Hotel h**l (Fox, 8:00 p.m.) That inn owner with a hoarding problem from last week continues to receive help from Gordon Ramsay. Were no expert, but it seems like a psychologist/therapist should be the person trying to cure her, not a celebrity chef.

To Tell the Truth (ABC, 8:00/10:00 p.m.) To Tell the Truth was one of TVs most successful game shows back in the day were talking 60 years back in the day but ABC thinks it could be ratings gold this summer, so theyre reviving it. The show features celebrities trying to guess who among a trio of contestants is telling the truth. Tonight, Tracee Ellis Ross joins the panel with guests that include Americas fastest texter, Taylor Swifts high school sweetheart and a contortionist. Later, a drag queen who is also a high-grossing Tupperware sales person, shark attack survivors and someone who makes a living jumping off buildings while on fire test their bullsh*t detectors.

Containment (CW, 9:00 p.m.) Dr. Cannerts has a breakthrough as he works to find a cure for the virus; Katie and Jake discovering some unsettling truths about patient zero; Jana and Suzy plan their escape; and a risky plan to secure an antidote veers off course.

Coupled (Fox, 9:00 p.m.) One of the ladies is rejected as another shares secrets from her past.

O.J.: Made in America (ESPN, 9:00 p.m.) Part two of ESPNs epic O.J. documentary focuses on race and the 1992 Rodney King riots, which set the stage for his trial.

Feed the Beast (AMC, 10:00 p.m.) Tommy and Dion forge ahead with their plan to breathe new life into Thirio with the help of Ries designs, but in order to pay for the upgrades, they have to resort to crime.

Maya & Marty (NBC, 10:00 p.m.) Nick Jonas and Eva Longoria stop by for some musical sketch shenanigans.

Person of Interest (CBS, 10:00 p.m.) Finchs infiltration of a maximum security government facility could spell the end of Samaritan, himself and the Machine.
