Kenny Sailors: The Long-Forgotten Inventor Of Basketball"s Jump Shot09:42

BEST Basketball Vines of June 2016

Thisstoryoriginally aired on Feb. 20, 2016. This week itappears againas a part of our Origins Show.

Sure, the slam dunk is flashy but three-pointers win games. And to sink a three-pointer, you have to know how to jump.

No one knows who first came up with the idea of jumping in the air and shooting a basketball. But the modern jump shot, the one that"s still used today the one we teach to kids does have an inventor. And that man is not in the basketball hall of fame. At least not yet. Why?

To answer that question, we have to turn back the clock 84 years.

TwoBrothersOn A Farm

The year is 1932. The location: a family farm outside Hillsdale, Wyoming. The star of our story is Kenny Sailors. Hes 12. And he idolizes his older brother, Bud, the way 12-year-olds often do. And so when Bud starts playingbasketball, Kenny wants to play, too.

"And, of course, we didn"t have any place to play except he"d put a hoop up. A rim and no net on it, and he fixed a backboard, and we fastened it to the old wooden windmill that we had. Bud and I"d go out there and play around. And I never could get a shot off, and he really enjoyed that because he was 6-foot-5, and I was just about, I don"t know, 5-foot-7 probably. He"d laugh and he"d say, "Kenny, this isn"t the game for you. It"s for big men. Tall men."

"It was out there on that packed ground and that old windmill that I figured out a way to get a shot off over that brother of mine. Dribble up to him. He couldn"t stop my dribble, and I"d dribble up to him and then jump. Boy that spooked him. He said, "That"s a good shot, Kenny. You have to get better at that.""

Kenny Sailors did get better at it. He got good enough to play for the University of Wyoming and good enough to take that team to the 1943 NCAA finals at Madison Square Garden.

"People out East, had heard stories about this team from the West, and their superstar who played this kind of crazy game," saysShawn Fury, author of"Rise and Fire," a book about the many men who"ve contributed to the jump shot."They ended up winning the NCAA championship. And then a few days later, they played the winner of the NIT tournament, and they won that as well, so they were kinda the kings of college basketball."

Theres an old highlight reel of that game on YouTube. Thing is, even though Kenny was named the College Basketball Player of the Year, he doesnt get a shout out on the highlight reel. A clean view of his jump shot doesnt even make the cut. Fury explains.

"Forever in basketball history, both feet were always on the ground when they took a shot. They"d have the ball with two hands and at their chest and they"d shove it forward, kind of like shoving a boat off into the lake or something.Soit makes sense that a sports announcer who has watched hundreds of games but just seen set shots had never seen anyone like Kenny. So he probably didn"t have the words to describe it, so he"s just going to kind of gloss it over."

Jump For It...Or Don"t

Announcers weren"t the only ones confused by Sailors" shot. Defenders didn"t know what to do either.

"They would raise a hand to try to block the shot, but a lot of times they wouldn"t jump," Fury says.

"You know, that"s hilarious," I say. "It seems so logical. He jumps, you jump. "

"Yeah, to us, it sounds so simplistic and it sounds like something that James Naismith himself should"ve known in 1891," Fury says with a laugh. "But it just wasn"t, because the game for 50, 60 years had been played one way."

Kenny Sailors" first pro coach didn"t want him to use the jump shot. (AP)

So lets talk about how basketball was played back in 1943. Kenny Sailors is not the only one on that old, grainy highlights film who jumps. Players on both sides jump for rebounds, they jump for layups. On another highlight reel you can even watch a guy dribble downthe court, jump in the air and fling the ball at the basket. It goes in.

So what made Kenny Sailors jump shot different?

"It looked different," says Jud Heathcote. "No one would shoot in somebody"s face, as we call it, and he did."

Heathcotewould later go on to coach Magic Johnson and Michigan State to the NCAA championship.

Hesays it"s a crime that Sailors isn"t in the Hall of Fame.

But back in the 1940s, Heathcote was a college basketball player himself, and he saw Sailors and his jump shot at a tournament in Denver.

"He would get right close, jump over them and release the ball," Heathcoterecalls. "And so this was spectacular in terms of my observation."

This is what Heathcote saw. Sailors would stop. (This is important because otherwise hed plow into the defender that"s a foul.) So hed stop squared up to the basket, jump, and at the top of his jump hed release the ball with one hand using the other hand just as a guide. If youre having trouble picturing it, think the Warriors" Stephen Curry. Its pretty much the shot thats made him by some measures the most dominant player in the NBA today.

Got it? Now picture it in the 1940s.

"So when I saw this little guy dribble right up into big guys, just jump and shoot right over them," Heathcote says, "I was mesmerized with the jump shot."

The jump shot took Kenny Sailors to the league that would become the NBA. But when he got there, he found out that not everyone was mesmerized.

"This first coach I had from Dutch Dehnert was his name. He had that New York brogue, you know. That nice old guy, but he just wasn"t a coach. He said to me, "Sailors, where"d youse "youse" where"d youse get that leapin" one-hander?" That"s what they called it. Leapin" one-hander. "Oh," I said, "I don"t know, Dutch." I said, "I"ve had that quite a while." I said, "That"s what keeps me in the game." He says, "You just never make it in this league with that kind of a shot." He says, "I"ll show you how to shoot a good two-handed set shot." And he says, "That dribble." He says, "We don"t dribble in this league." He said, "We pass the ball up the court.""

Luckily, for both Kenny Sailors and the future success of the NBA, that coach was fired and replaced with a guy who put the ball in Sailors" hands and let him do what he wanted with it. And that worked out pretty well for Sailors and for the NBA.

"I think it grew the popularity to a degree that it never would have otherwise," Fury says. "Increased scoring a lot, in college basketball especially. You know, you used to have games in the 40s or the 50s. Now you had games in the 80s and 90s. And fans just enjoyed that more."

But what about Kenny Sailors?

"Kenny"s story really has been a forgotten story," says filmmakerJacob Hamilton."He disappeared for nearly 50 years after he retired from the game of basketball."

Hamiltonis directing a documentaryabout Kenny Sailors" life, and heprovidedall of the interviews with Sailors that we"re using for this story. Butbefore he started working onhis film, he had the same reaction to the story as I did.

""Wait, this guy invented the jump shot? How is that possible?" And, "The jump shot didn"t always exist?""

The Jump Shot"s Legacy

A few years ago,Hamilton invited Sailors out for breakfast Sailors ate ham and eggs and they talked about the movie theywanted to make. Sailors mentioned his time in the Marines, his 15 years as a dude rancher in Jackson Hole, his 35 years in Alaska coaching high school girls basketball and his lifetime as a devout Christian. He seemed more interested in talking about those things than he was in talking about the jump shot.

""Cause he is very humble, he is very modestand he doesn"t like to take credit for it," Hamilton says."You just look at his life and like, "Man, that"s the way to do it. He didn"t waste one second of his life.""

Kenny Sailors died on Jan. 30, 2016 just two weeks after his 95th birthday.

"You know, the thing that we feared most was that he would pass away and no one would know and he"d be forgotten, like he was before," Hamilton says.

But Sailors hasn"t been forgotten. Since his death in late January, the call to include him in the Naismith Hall of Fame has only gotten louder. It was always something that seemed to matter to Sailors" friends more than it mattered to him. He"d like to say that as a lifelong Christian, he didnt spend a lot of time worrying about such things.

"You know, these halls of fame that you can get into down here that men select you to get into, they"re nice up to a point. I know I belong to the greatest hall of fame that any man or woman can ever belong to. And when you belong to that and you know you belong to it, you don"t worry about these halls of fame that men create down here. Don"t mean that much to you."

The Naismith Hall of Fame announced its 2016 class at the NCAA Final Four in April. Sailors was not among the honorees. The veteran"s committee will continue to consider his case. And should his name eventually be called, Jacob Hamilton says he knows that his friend will be smiling down on the announcement.

Orange Is The New Black"s Laura Prepon is such a beauty in no make-up

Laura Prepon reveals who has ever lived in Brazil (LEGENDADO PT/BR)
Laura Prepon revealed her true, natural beauty this weekend when she posted a gorgeous no make-up snap to her Instagram feed on Sunday (5 June).

Yes, the actress, producer and author can totally work it on the red carpet when she wants to, but isn"t it even better to see how amazing she looks with not a scrap of make-up on?

Instagram / @lauraprepon

Laura, who plays Alex Vause in the hit Netflix show Orange Is The New Black took to the social media site on Sunday while surrounding by all things natural.

"Fresh flowers and farmers market fruits and veggies makes for a happy Sunday," she posted.

It was, therefore, only fitting that she went for the natural approach to her hair and make-up at the same time, right? After all, Laura is a big advocate of organic, healthy-eating and overall well-being, having just co-authored "The Stash Plan" with top nutritionist, Elizabeth Troy.

And it seems her healthy lifestyle is paying off when it comes to her skin.

At 36-years-of-age, Laura looks fresh-faced, glowing and pretty much wrinkle-free in her latest snap.

Jel? Yeah, same here.

Laura looked glam and gorgeous at The Women of Netflix"s Rebels and Rule Breakers event, 14 May 2016

As well as eating well and looking after her body, Laura has another beauty trick up her sleeve. And it"s a totally free one, too!

"People always ask how I start the day for an awards show," she posted to Instagram before this year"s SAG Awards in January.

"I start by sweating in my infrared sauna. I always feel like it shakes off the sleep fog to break a sweat first thing, as well as sweat out those pesky toxins.

"Then I jump in a freezing cold pool to jump start my body and get ready for the day! Better than any cup of coffee. #sagawardsprep #coldplunge," she added.

Yes, it makes us feel cold thinking about it, but there"s definitely something to be said about a cold water skin pick-me-up. We also hear that Kate Hudson is a big fan of dunking her face in iced water every morning.

And if it"s good enough for both Kate and Laura? We"re sold.

ps: Season 4 of Orange Is The New Black is back (yay!), hitting Netflix on 17 June.

Eerily accurate fan fiction predicted Taylor Swift and Tom Hiddleston"s relationship in 2014

TAYLOR SWIFT AND TOM HIDDLESTON DATING?

It"s not very original to compare the worldwide web to a monkey banging on a typewriter, but here we are. Millions of us have been banging on keyboards for many years now and somehow, somewhere, someone predicted the current predicament some are calling "Hiddleswift" two years before it happened, and with some eerily accurate details.

I"ll recap quickly for those who haven"t been keeping up: Taylor Swift broke up with her exceptionally boring boyfriend (a rich DJ named Calvin Harris) two weeks ago. On Wednesday, a bit unkindly, the entire Twittersphere was thrust into the ice-cold shower of a Sun exclusive. The British tabloid published several photos of Swift canoodling with Tom Hiddleston on a pile of rocks near her home in Rhode Island. The pictures showed them wearingleather shoes on a beach, which was equally disturbing to some. Me, I"m just wondering who made the insane rock sculpture in the corner of the frame.

this relationship already felt like fan fiction

The Sun also embedded a video of the two dancing at the 2016 Met Ball, where they met three weeks before Swift and Harris" breakup. They are both terrible dancers, and Tom"s tuxedo has tails.

Even as I type, these events seem improbable. What would the world"s biggest pop star have in common with a 35-year-old man who has only recently been able to book acting jobs outside the Thor universe? Who falls in love at a dinner partysponsored by a global tech corporation? Seriously, who takes the time to build aBlair Witch-inspired craft projectin between spit-swappings?

Yet, these events aren"t only real, they were predicted. Jennifer Stanley, a fan fiction writer who posts her work on Archive of Our Own, wrotea 12,000-word piece called "Wildest Dreams" in late 2014. It accurately predicts the celebrity relationship moniker that sprung up around the Hiddleston-Swift romance ("Hiddleswift!") and depicts the pair meeting at the 2015 Met Gala. It"s the wrong year, but I"m still chilled right down to my bone. Is Taylor Swift the all-seeing eye? It"s just a coincidence.

Some highlights from the most terrifying piece of fan fiction I"ve ever read:

Taylor Swift struggles to remember watching Thor.

"But there was a flash of blue eyes somewhere in the crowd that met mine and held my gazeif only for a split second. They were all too familiar, but where had I seen those eyes before? I bit the inside of my cheek after I had glanced away, losing focus of the conversation taking place in front of me as I fished through my mind like mad to figure out where I had seen them before. Where? Where?!"

Tom Hiddleston has strange anatomy.

"A cute chuckle rumbled out from his chest."

Taylor learns a lot.

"I learned so much more about Tom that night than I could ever imagine. h**l, I even learned so much about Ancient Chinese Culture."

The rest of the fiction is NSFW, and is tagged with a "s**t" warning. (Hey mom, I"m reading s**t at work!)

The oddest thing about the story is that Stanley integrated lyrics from Swift"s song "Wildest Dreams," making the encounter with Hiddleston serve as the creative impetus for the song. Hiddleston actually looks a lot likethe guy in the music video for "Wildest Dreams," which was released last August. He"s extremely Anglican-looking, and constantly wearing linen shirts. The video is also very "Old Hollywood," and Hiddleston is considered the frontrunner to take over the role of James Bond. I don"t know what I"m saying, really, but I wouldn"t be shocked to discover that Swift has had this stunt in mind for a very long time! Is it so hard to believe that Swift reads all the fan fiction about herself, carefully selecting the best plot lines to integrate into the Grand Narrative of Swift? I believe it! Okay, that"s absurd, she"s a person.

But how do you explainStanley"s sequel to "Wildest Dreams"? In "I Know Places," Hiddleston and Swift are hanging out in "the water," when their relationship is exposed prematurely by the media. It was written in April of 2015.

The real life "Hiddleswift" even feels like fan fiction they"re both pop culture figures that young internet denizens are extremely passionate about (Hiddleston is often referred to as"The Internet"s Boyfriend") and they have ostensibly nothing to do with each other. The only place they possibly could meet is at the Met Ball Manhattan"s annual party for anyone who is famous for any reason.

I don"t know why "Hiddleswift" has happened, but I do know, by the classic laws of probability, that it was just as likely to happen as any other thing. And while that is the basic premise of fan fiction, it is the antithesis of the premise of Taylor Swift"sexpertly curated life. In all our days on this messy Earth, we will never know what is random and what is Swift.
