Canadian ex-high school teammates Jamal Murray, Thon Maker taken in top 10 of NBA draft

Thon Maker 2016 NBA Draft Scouting Video - Strengths

NEW YORK Theres been a lot of Canadian hoops history made at recent NBA drafts, but Thursday brought even more.

Jamal Murray and Thon Maker, former high school teammates at the Athlete Institute in Orangeville, Ont., both went in the top-10. For Murray, it all seemed predestined.

For Maker, well, what a story, the type more suited to Hollywood than the NBA.

Murray, who starred as a freshman at Kentucky, averaging 20 points per game, went seventh to the Denver Nuggets, while Maker, born in Sudan, raised in Australia and in Canada for two years, first with Murray, then with his brother Matur, went 10th to the Milwaukee Bucks.

They became the first NBA selections out of Canadian high schools (who didnt finish at American high school or prep schools) since Jamaal Magloire 20 years ago.

Maker famously challenged his way into this draft, doing so despite not playing in college or overseas because he said he had graduated last year, but returned for a fifth year of high school, but was expected to go late in the first or even in the second round before his meteoric rise.

Its an amazing story. Hes an amazing player, and he deserved all of it, Murray said when asked about the saga at the podium.

Im just happy for him. I cant wait to see him go and get started.

Hes a great player, great person, hard work ethic. Hes going to be something special. He wants it, and you can tell. I love playing with guys that have the same fire.

Maker will compete for Australia at international events, but Murray will be a key piece for Canada moving forward.

But his focus is on Denver, and on proving the teams that let him slide wrong.

I always believe Im the best player, and when a team really sees the No. 1 choice, like Denver did, then I just want to play for them more, Murray said.

I want to give them all Ive got, and I just want to learn and be ready to compete.

Murray will team with another big guard in Emmanuel Mudiay with the Nuggets.

Me and Mudiay, we played in the Hoops Summit together for one year. So I kind of got to see what hes like. Hes a great player and hes a great guy. Family person, and well be a good team. Well be working together and playing off each other.

Murray set freshman scoring and three-point records while at Kentucky and head coach John Calipari raved about him all season and ever since, saying he was one of the best players he has ever coached.

Murray, who starred at the Pan Am Games in Toronto last summer, despite being far younger than the competition, does not lack for confidence.

Just going to be an all-around player, the player that you cant leave open, the player youve got to pay attention to on the court at all times, he said of his NBA projection.

Maker is out to prove people wrong as well.

People usually say nowadays that playing hard is the new skill, or having a motor is a new skill. For me it was just always having that work ethic and just continuing to work hard, Maker said.

My skills have always been just work on them, and you never know when youre going to use them in the game. So just work on them, have them in your pocket, and then when required, use them.

Maker was asked about his journey.

It took a long time in a short time period, I can say that, because its five years its goingonsix years now, was how Maker put it.

It was five years when I decided I first wanted to be a pro and take basketball serious. So its been a long time because Ive put in a lot of games, a lot of work, and to finally see it pay off, really I lost words. When I was walking there, trying to say thank you to my family, just took lots of words, and I speak with them every day. It was a different situation. Mentally you just cant wait. Physically youre trying to control yourself, and at the same time its unreal.

The Raptors had hoped Murray or someone else in the consensus Top 8 fell after Ben Simmons and Brandon Ingram went 1-2 as expected, but Marquesse Chriss went a pick before Torontos ninth selection, which was used on Austrian centre Jakob Poeltl.

Poeltl said he is excited to back up Jonas Valanciunas and rejoin Utah teammate Delon Wright, the teams third-string point guard.

Backup centre isnt a huge position of need, even though Bismack Biyombos return is unlikely, but the team was impressed by his skill and toughness.

Its amazing, you know? Just knowing you have a friend, like somebody that can help you out already there, him having one year of experience already, its going to help me out a lot and its just a fun thing to think about, Poeltl told Postmedia as he walked to do more interviews.

It was definitely a possibility, but like I said, Im super stoked that I ended up here.

The Raptors later picked Pascal Siakam with the 27th pick, a Cameroonian big man who has drawn comparisons to Biyombo.

It was a wild and unpredictable night at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

A fan outside sported a green leprechaun outfit, complete with hat, and a sign that read: Thanks for the gifts, Billy King. That, of course, is a reference to the disastrous trade the former Nets general manager made years ago to land Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce that handed the Celtics a boatload of juicy picks, including No. 3 overall in 2016.

The deal bombed and to make it worse, the Nets organization had to watch Boston come away with a coveted pick in its own arena.

Arvydas Sabonis, the legendary, 7-foot-3 Lithuanian centre killed time by ordering snacks an hour beforehand. His son, Domantas, was picked 11th by Orlando, but the Magic stunningly surrendered Sabonis, former No. 2 overall selection Victor Oladipo and Ersan Ilyasova to Oklahoma City for Serge Ibaka, in a heist for the Thunder.

Toronto had tried to make a move for Ibaka using the ninth pick and more, but couldnt match Orlandos huge offer.

Kendall Jenner Morphs Into "Goth Goddess" for Marc Jacobs

Kendall Jenner Inspired Look: Fresh & Glowy | Summer 2016

Kendall Jenner has turned herself into a "goth goddess" for fashion designer Marc Jacobs" new fall campaign.

Jacobs has shared a photo on Instagram of an advertisement featuring Jenner made up in all black with high platform heel boots and wearing white makeup.

KENDALL, Supermodel I will always remember the first time I met Kendall during castings for our Fall 2014 fashion show. Katie Grand invited her to come by the studio for a brief introduction before she was photographed for the model boards. At the time, I knew very little about Kendall As history now has it, her very first fashion show was for Marc Jacobs Fall 2014. Kendall has since been a part of every show along with being featured in our Spring 15 ad campaign (also shot by David Sims). It goes without saying that Kendall has gone on to establish an incredible career for herself and every bit of it is a testament to her hard work, passion and desire. During castings for Fall 16, due to the enormous height of the boots we designed, we had to make certain that each girl was able to walk (and walk safely). Kendall slid those boots on and walked around the studio as if she was in a pair of running shoes: statuesque, confident and just as enthusiastic and excited to be doing the show as if it was her first one. For me, it is the ability of a model to effortlessly transform into a look and character that makes her so appealing and inspiring. Photographed by David Sims for our Fall 16 ad as a Goth Goddess is the sweet, kind and ultimate professional, Kendall Jenner.

The former creative director for Louis Vuitton said that during the casting process for the Fall 2016 campaign, due to the enormous height of the boots, it was important to find a girl who was able to "walk safely" in them.

"Kendall slid those boots on and walked around the studio as if she was in a pair of running shoes: statuesque, confident and just as enthusiastic and excited to be doing the show as if it was her first one," Jacobs wrote.

Jacobs goes on to say Jenner is "sweet, kind and the ultimate professional."

The 20-year-old daughter of Caitlyn Jenner and Kris Jenner has been modeling for Jacobs since 2014.

Germany embraces glitzy offices to shake up corporate culture

Germany VS Northern Ireland & Spain VS Croatia | Get Germanized Livestream | #8 | 2016

MUNICH/HERZOGENAURACH, Germany Major German companies are investing in ambitious new buildings designed to attract top staff and encourage innovation, seeking to create a more dynamic corporate culture and keep pace with U.S. rivals despite investor concerns about the cost.

Germany is competing in a global race for top talent, particularly in technology and design, as firms such as Apple (AAPL.O) and Facebook (FB.O) work on futuristic campuses with gardens, fitness facilities and gourmet restaurants.

Siemens (SIEGn.DE) opens new headquarters in downtown Munich on Friday, a move it hopes will help Chief Executive Joe Kaeser"s drive to open up the engineering giant founded in 1847 to new ideas, loosen hierarchies and increase staff engagement.

Sportswear firm Adidas (ADSGn.DE) and fashion site Zalando (ZALG.DE) are also investing hundreds of millions of euros in new offices in Germany.

Investors have questioned how much glitzy buildings can really help improve performance. Apple"s new "spaceship" campus is now well behind schedule and over budget at $5 billon.

After the near collapse of Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS.L) in 2008, its new 350 million-pound ($518 million) headquarters was dubbed "Fred"s Folly" after disgraced former CEO Fred Goodwin.

Shareholders have also complained about an upgrade of PepsiCo"s (PEP.N) headquarters, set amid lakes and fountains.

Siemens says it is investing a figure in the "low triple- digit millions" of euros in its building, which collects rainwater to flush toilets and will use 90 percent less electricity and 75 percent less water than its predecessor.

"I remain to be convinced whether this is the best use of shareholders" money. At least Siemens are deploying the most energy-efficient technologies," said Barclays analyst James Stettler.

All three German office projects are introducing open-plan, shared desks, a big change given the country"s hierarchical corporate culture in which most managers sit separately from their teams in closed offices.

SITTING WITH THE BOSS

The firms say they are not only trying to save space, but also encourage employees to interact more with each other.

"Our new headquarters is a place where encounters occur," Siemens CEO Kaeser said this week.

A Massachusetts Institute of Technology study found that 35 percent of a team"s performance can be predicted by the number and quality of face-to-face interactions its members have.

In contrast to the massive, closed, out-of-town campuses Apple and Facebook are working on, the Siemens building in central Munich will allow the public to walk through new inner courtyards and exhibition spaces and use the ground-floor cafe.

"The new headquarters will make Siemens itself more accessible and open," said Zsolt Sluitner, chief executive of Siemens Real Estate.

The office has 1,100 desks for 1,200 staff and will introduce a "clean desk" policy, with staff required to use a storage space for their personal items when they head home.

Adidas has already had some experience with the approach. It is building a new office for more than 2,000 employees but decided to test new workplace designs on about 300 staff in the meantime and also roll them out to other offices globally. Priya Kohli, a soccer marketing expert, has been part of the pilot project.

"You get to speak to different colleagues. It helps massively with relationships," said the 33-year-old from London.

The fact that Kohli"s boss no longer has his own office is an added bonus: "If you are sat beside him, it is completely different than if you have to knock."

Adidas has spent more than 500 million euros ($566 million)on its headquarters outside Herzogenaurach in rural southern Germany as it competes with bigger U.S. rival Nike (NKE.N), which is also expanding its campus in Beaverton, Oregon. "You"re losing your one fixed working place but gaining 10 new places," said Christian Dzieia, Adidas property development director. "Successful buildings provide great places for communication and spontaneous interaction." At Zalando, Europe"s biggest online fashion firm currently building a new campus in the heart of Berlin for 5,000 staff costing 140 million euros, the challenge is to retain the start-up vibe that companies like Siemens and Adidas want to promote.

"The advantage at Zalando is that we already have a lot in our culture that will define the future of work but we need to maintain it," said Frauke von Polier, Zalando"s human resources chief. Eric Bowman, head of engineering at Zalando who previously worked in Silicon Valley, said European firms have an advantage over U.S. rivals because there is a better work-life balance.

He cited Silicon Valley firms locking away their staff for 20-hour days on increasingly fancy company campuses that provide for all their needs apart from sleep.

"I don"t really want to hire children. I want people to have a life outside work," he said.

FBI investigating person of interest, vehicle after Florida man killed by collision with trailer

Person of Interest 5x13 Sneak Peek #2 "Return 0" (HD) Series Finale

Law enforcement are investigating a person of interest and a vehicle that might have been involved in a fatal crash in Big Horn County last week that resulted in the death of a Florida man after his vehicle was struck by a trailer that broke away from its hitch, according to the Montana Highway Patrol.

Trooper Eric Winburn said that the FBI is now handling the investigation into the death of 65-year-old Ronald Eugene Beasley because the person of interest is believed to be a local adult male who might be a tribal member.

Winburn said he was unable to give any other information on the investigation and referred The Gazette to the FBI for further questions. Investigation into the crash will continue to be handled by MHP, Winburn said.

No vehicle identification number could be found on the trailer, but the SUV on the trailer did have a VIN registered out of Wyoming at one time," Winburn said.

Beasley was killed on June 15 at about 1:25 p.m. on U.S. Highway 212 when a trailer holding an SUV broke off the hitch of the westbound SUV towing it and struck Beasleys eastbound SUV on the drivers side. Beasley, the driver, was ejected from the vehicle after the trailer "ripped down the side of the vehicle," Winburn said. Beasley died from injuries sustained in the crash, Big Horn County Coroner Terry Bullis said.

A witness told Winburn that the man whose trailer hitch broke had pulled a U-turn after the crash and shouted Im going for help, before driving east toward the town of Busby located about 10 miles east of the crash.

Winburn said that prior to the crash, the towing vehicle was fishtailing and had swerved into the opposite lane before returning to the westbound lane, at which point the hitch broke.

After the crash, Winburn said the suspect vehicle was dark gray and possibly a Jeep-brand SUV. He described the trailers broken hitch as almost completely rusted out.

Big Brother 18 Recap: Summer Vacation Begins

Big Brother 18 - Episode 1 Chat - 6/22/16

By Mark DrumConnect with Mark!Blogspot/Twitter/Facebook/Email

With 12 houseguests there was bound to be some twists and turns waiting to surprise. Sure enough host, Julie Chen said there were three twists that would be announced by the end of the episode. I know I had my suspicions of twists, however I was still surprised by these new twists. As always with Big Brother, Expect the Unexpected! Heres my recap from last nights premiere episode of Big Brother season 18!

Meeting the new houseguests

As tradition all of the new houseguests were surprised with their house keys signifying their entry into the Big Brother house. Brontes fun fact that only 29% of the females have won Big Brother and in her words, when she wins shed it would be 33%, got to love the brainiac. It was interesting to hear that Corey sleepwalks; I wonder if there will be moments that happen in the house. Michelle was a talker for her introduction and Tiffany surprised her sister via video chat that shes going to be on Big Brother. After all the introduction of the houseguests was complete, the 12 new houseguests were sent off into the Big Brother house.

Once they all got settled in, Julie drops the three twists to the new houseguests, revealing the first twist was that there were four stowaways, in the house. The houseguests then tried to figure out who would be coming back. Jozea looked at the plates and thought that might be a clue. One showed Colorado and someone brought up that Becky from last season was from Colorado. The anticipation from the houseguests was high, but soon enough the stowaways, would reveal themselves.

Stowaway Houseguests Return

As a Big Brother fan, knowing that only 12 new houseguests were going into the Big Brother house, there was bound to be some returning houseguests. The four returning houseguests were not past winning houseguests but some big personalities from past seasons. Two of them were past Americas favorite houseguests. Here are the four returning houseguests in the order they appeared out of the luggage in the front of the Big Brother doors:

Nicole Franzel (23) (Season 16)

Occupation: ER Nurse

Hometown & Current City: Ubly, MI

  • I am excited that there is another Michigander for this season. Nicole is single and ready to focus on the game! However this will be her third chance at winning the $500K prize. In her previous season, she was voted out, and then won the opportunity to come back into the game but then was voted out again and into jury.

James Huling (32) (Season 17)

Occupation: Staff recruiter

Hometown: Sumter, SC

Current City: Wichita Falls, TX

  • Surprising that James came back especially after just being out of the house less than nine months ago. But hes determined to redeem himself and win this game. Plus hes in it to help support his daughter and as a former Americas favorite houseguest, hes sure to be back to some of his antics with this new cast.

DaVonne Rogers (28) (Season 17)

Occupation: Poker Dealer

Hometown: Inglewood, CA

Current City: Lancaster, CA

  • Mama Day is back in the Big Brother house! Heres hoping she doesnt get evicted in the second week. She had a lot of personality and was someone who would speak her mind. Mama Day is also doing this to support her daughter but to also redeem herself from last season.

Frank Eudy (32) (Season 14)

Occupation: Medical Sale Rep

Hometown: Marion, AR

Current City: Charlotte, NC

  • The final returning houseguest was Frank, who also was Americas favorite his season and also had returning houseguests compete his season. His loyalty and competitive drive is what got him as far as he did in the game. However hes hoping this time around to be able to flex more of his social game to keep him in than having to win competition.

After all of the returning houseguests were introduced and in the house, there were a few who were not happy with the old relics, coming back into the house. The returning houseguests know theyre outnumbered but should work with their fans that are in the house. Jozea, Paul and Zakiyah seem to have formed an alliance, so well see how this trio will do. Paulie wanted to come clean about being Codys brother. Which came as a surprise to Paul and was skeptic to why Paulie would announce it after the returners came back. Mama Day however was more concerned with the mini poker player, and knew that Vanessas sister was in the house. Julie came back to welcome the returning houseguests and announce the second twist to the houseguests.

Picking Teams For Safety

The second twist revealed to the houseguests was that they would all be competing in teams this summer. During an interview when Executive Producer Alison Grodner said Battle of the Block wasnt coming back but a new competition was being introduced now makes sense. The first competition had the houseguests holding on to a giant rocket to guarantee safety for not just one but two evictions. Each of the returning houseguests was then separated to then choose their first member of their team. However the person they chose had to be of the opposite gender then that person would choose the next person. Mama Day already confused two houseguests Paul & Paulie, while Frank chose Michelle because she was a fan of his.

Once the teams were chosen they all had to get on their rockets to start the competition and after each team was eliminated would land at a destination, which would have rewards and/or a punishment. Glenn had some trouble getting on, which stressed Nicole out. However Glenn wasnt the first one off the rocket when the competition started it was his teammate Tiffany who fell off. One by one houseguests started to fall after being hit with water, the rocket moving around and hit with bird p**p. The first team to be eliminated and the first have nots were DaVonne, Jozea, Paul & Zakiyah, which were sent to Notburgh. Nearing the end each team had one person left which were Paulie, Victor and Corey. In the end Victor came out victorious for his team and sent his team to Safevile. The team consisted of James, Bronte and Natalie. While Paulie landed his team to Mysteryland that would be a punishment later to be revealed, Corey landed in Cash City and his team would split $10,000 which mean each gets $2,500.

Introducing Category 4, Big Sister, Freakazoids & Team Unicorn is safe

The teams then had to think of a team name. It took Team Unicorn a bit of time to think of their name, they were safe from two evictions after winning the first competition. Meanwhile Category 4 (Frank, Bridgette, Michelle & Paulie), Big Sister (DaVonne, Jozea, Paul & Zakiyah) and Freakazoids (Nicole, Corey, Glenn & Tiffany) all had to compete in the second competition for safety. Ranking the teams, Team Unicorn would be on top currently since theyre safe for two evictions. Meanwhile the other three teams have to prove themselves and to ensure their own safety.

Balancing & Building Sandcastles

The second competition consisted of the houseguests balancing and building a pyramid sandcastle. The team who wins this competition would be safe from the first eviction. Which Julie revealed would be by the end of the first day, which means by the end of the first week two houseguests would be evicted. So Team Unicorns safety would only be for one week. The Freakazoids looked to have had the lead, struggling to get their final piece balanced. For team Big Sister, they struggled with communication between DaVonne and Paul. However the win came to Category 4, which meant they were safe from the first eviction. While Big Sister and Freakazoids had to compete in the third competition to guarantee their safety.

Similar to the second competition, Big Sister and Freakazoids had to build a sandcastle however instead of balancing them they had to solve a puzzle of building blocks. There were also some decoy blocks, so the houseguests would need to be focused and attention to detail. Communication was key because they all needed to work together. Glenn was struggling letting his team know that they needed to switch out some blocks at the foundation. Paul was controlling Big Sister and DaVonne was trying to put him in his place. It was neck and neck and Freakazoids were first to hit their buzzer to see if they were correct. However they were not and had to figure out what pieces were incorrect. For the viewers we could see Glenn was correct about the foundation. This gave team Big Sister the opportunity to win the competition and guarantee themselves safety from the first eviction. Leaving Nicole, Corey, Glenn and Tiffany all having to compete now against each other in the final competition for the night. This was the cliffhanger to the two-night premiere.

Prediction for Eviction & First person in power

Lets hope that our Michigander and returner Nicole isnt evicted. Since the Freakazoids are now competing as individuals for safety in this final competition, it is anyones own to win or lose. I predict however Vanessas sister Tiffany will be the first houseguest to be evicted. But again its anyones competition to win or lose. Tune in tonight to see whos evicted then from whom in Team Freakazoids will be the first in power. If Nicole survives I can see her getting the power. Watch what happens on CBS Detroit at 9 p.m.!
