Is Yeti worth the extra bucks?

30oz Tumbler Yeti vs Ozark Trail Comparison

HOUSTON - Yeti is to coolers what Mercedes is to cars: A luxury brand many consumers swear by. People pay more, because they believe Yeti products keep drinks colder longer.

Consumer expert Amy Davis from KSAT 12"s sister station, KPRC-TV in Houston, put the brand to the test.

Davis purchased the Yeti Rambler Tumbler for $29.99, an Igloo insulated tumbler for $14.99, an Ozark Trail tumbler made by Walmart for $7.74 and a Bubba Cup for $6.99.

She filled them each with ice and water and made sure they all were a freezing 32.1 degrees.

On a scorcher of a day, Davis left them on the curb outside the TV station and checked on them throughout the day.

At two hours, most of the ice had melted inside all four cups, but the water temperature was still cool.

Five hours after she filled them, Davis started to separate the working cups from the slackers.

The water inside the Igloo tumbler was 90.3 degrees. It was 77.3 degrees in the Bubba Cup. The water was still in the 60s in both the Yeti and the Ozark Trail tumblers eight hours after they were filled.

Finally, 21 hours later, the water in the Yeti was 71 degrees, while the water in the Ozark Trail cup was 68 degrees. Shoppers could almost buy four Ozark Trail tumblers for the price of one Yeti tumbler.

But here"s the rub. The secret may be out, because Walmart was out of the 20-ounce tumblers at the time this story was published.

The 30-ounce Ozark Trail tumblers are available at some stores. Be sure to check stock online before you head to the store.

Local PBS Host Calls Dallas Shooter a Martyr, is Placed on Leave

First black Miss Alabama calls Dallas cop killer a ‘martyr’

Kalyn Chapman James, host of an art show on Florida PBS station WPBT, has been put on administrative leave after calling the Dallas shooter a martyr in a Facebook video.

The first black Miss Alabama, James is a contractor for the South Florida PBS station and hosts a show called Art Loft, a weekly program showcasing local artists, exhibitions, performances and art groups.

In the Facebook video, James said, I value human life and I want to feel sad for them but I cant help but feeling like the shooter was a martyr, and I know its not the right way to feel because nobody deserves to lose their lives and I know those police officers had families and people who loved them and they didnt deserve to die.

Thursday night, Micah Xavier Johnson was determined to be the lone shooter in the murder of five police officers in an ambush during a protest march.

WPBT attempted to distance itself from James by tweeting out this statement.

WPBT2 South Florida PBS does not condone the personal statements made by one of its independent contractors regarding the events in Dallas.

James told Mobile NBC affiliate WPMI her words were taken out of context. What Micah did was wrong period, said James. Maybe martyr wasnt the right word but it was what came to mind at that time.

I apologize to anyone who was offended by my comments. My heart was not filled with hate, she said.

Fox News suspends contract with Newt Gingrich amid high VP speculation

Newt Gingrich: Would be hard to turn down VP offer

Fox News has suspended its contributor agreement with Newt Gingrich amid increasing rumors the former House Speaker is in the lead to become Donald Trump"s vice presidential pick.

"Due to the intense media speculation about Gingrich"s potential selection as Donald Trump"s vice presidential candidate, we felt it best to halt his contributor role on the network to avoid all conflicts of interest that may arise," the network"s executive vice president, Jay Wallace, said Tuesday in a statement.

Moments after the announcement, Gingrich said Trump would likely announce his VP selection either Wednesday or Thursday, and "certainly no later than Friday," in order to dominate the weekend news cycle.

"It"s a little like "The Apprentice," he added, referring to the popular game show formerly hosted by Trump. "You"ll find out sooner or later who the last one standing is."

Gingrich"s name has been bandied about as a top choice for the billionaire businessman, and he has reportedly been lobbying for the No. 2 spot.

"Newt Gingrich is "actively lobbying" to be Donald Trump"s running mate," CNN reported this weekend, citing an anonymous source.

Silver: No decision yet on Charlotte All-Star Game

MOST AMAZING ALL-STAR GAME EVER! | On-Season Softball Series

LAS VEGAS (AP) NBA owners made no decision Tuesday after a lengthy debate about moving next year"s All-Star Game from Charlotte because of North Carolina"s law limiting protection for LGBT people.

Commissioner Adam Silver said no vote was taken at the Board of Governors meeting, but the league realizes a decision has to come fairly quickly. He said he was personally disappointed North Carolina legislators didn"t modify the law enough in recent weeks to make the discussion moot.

"We feel this law is inconsistent with the core values of the league," Silver said.

Silver said the NBA was put in a situation not entirely its own making because the law was enacted by North Carolina"s legislature after the 2017 All-Star Game was already awarded to Charlotte.

He added that the game is important for the league in ways that aren"t always shown on the court.

"The primary test for us is under this law whether we can successfully host our All-Star week," he said. "It is more than a game, it is a week full of activities in North Carolina. The question for us becomes in this situation, given the controversy, given the amount of discussion, given how hardened the views are, is this the place we should be in 2017, at the epicenter of global basketball where we can go celebrate our game and our values."

Silver did not say when a decision would be made on possibly moving the game, but that the clock is ticking.

"We"re not trying to keep everybody in suspense," he said. "We realize this decision has to be made very quickly."

Silver"s remarks come less than two weeks after North Carolina legislators revisited the law and chose to leave it largely unchanged. During their yearly work session that ended this month, the General Assembly restored the ability of workers to use state law to sue over employment discrimination on the basis of race, religion and other factors - but left gender identity and sexual orientation unprotected.

The law passed in a March special session also excludes sexual orientation and gender identity from antidiscrimination protections related to the workplace, hotels and restaurants; and overrules local antidiscrimination ordinances. Republican leaders have said the law was passed in response to a Charlotte ordinance that would have allowed transgender people to use restrooms consistent with their gender identity.

The fate of the law is likely to be decided in federal courts where dueling lawsuits are being heard, though those results are likely to come after the NBA has to make its decision on the All-Star Game. Elsewhere, other states have filed lawsuits challenging federal guidelines on transgender bathroom access in schools.

A day before North Carolina"s legislature passed the minor change related to workplace lawsuits, the NBA issued a joint statement with the Charlotte Hornets saying that it had discussed the issue "with numerous groups at the city and state levels," but it doubted proposed changes would go far enough.

Charlotte officials have said they expected the event to have an economic impact of around $100 million, based on data from recent All-Star games in the comparable New Orleans and Orlando markets. The game could rival the $164 million economic impact of the 2012 Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, the largest financial bump of any event for the city.

In other league business, Silver said:

* He supported Kevin Durant"s right to join a Golden State team already loaded with talent, but acknowledged there were some concerns about having a league where it seems only two teams have a chance to win the finals. He said there have been talks with the players" union about changing some of the elements in the free-agent system, and that it will be a part of the upcoming collective bargaining negotiations.

"I don"t think it"s good for the league," Silver said about the possibility of uneven competitive balance.

* There will be changes in the rules on deliberate away-from-the-play fouls to prevent more "Hack A Shaq" situations. Owners agreed to extend the prohibition on the fouls from the last two minutes of the game to the last two minutes of each period. Along with other changes, he said, officials feel that 45 percent of the calls could be eliminated.

"It"s not a full step, but this is a serious half-step," he said.

* The league has no plans to expand beyond its current 30 teams, but does find Las Vegas an attractive place to do business. The city recently got its first pro franchise, with an NHL team scheduled to begin play next year.

Michigan shooting: Inmate kills 2 bailiffs, sheriff says

Michigan Courthouse Shooting: Multiple Victims, 2 Bailiffs Dead, Officer Shot at Berrien County

(CNN) Two court bailiffs were killed and a deputy was injured Monday after an inmate grabbed the deputys gun outside a holding cell in a Michigan courthouse, Berrien County Sheriff L. Paul Bailey said.

After shooting the officers, inmate Larry Darnell Gordon tried to take hostages in the courtroom area, shot a woman in the arm and was fatally shot by other bailiffs when he tried to flee, Bailey said.

Killed were Joseph Zangaro, 61, and Ron Kienzle, 60, according to CNN affiliate WXMI. They both had retired earlier from other law enforcement agencies and then served more than a decade each as bailiffs, Bailey said.

Our hearts are torn apart, Bailey said. They were our friends. They were our colleagues. Ive known them over 30 years.

The injured deputy is James Atterbury, 41, WXMI said. He underwent surgery at Lakeland Health in St. Joseph and was expected to recover, Bailey said. The civilian woman who was shot also suffered non-life-threatening injuries, he said. Her identity was not released.

The shootings, which happened in St. Joseph, a small town on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, occurred just a few days after a sniper killed five police officers in Dallas.

Community brought together

I just want to be here to support. A terrible day and a wonderful community, Michigan governor Rick Synder said, speaking out just hours after the tragedy. I asked all Michiganers to put their prayers out. Their thoughts and prayers.

The community, looking for hope and healing, gathered at Atterburys church, where his father is a pastor and where leaders of the congregation led prayers for the injured victims recovery.

His uncle, Robert Atterbury, said he never expected tragedy to hit so close to home. Hes a great guy. Ive known him since he was a baby, he told CNN affiliate WBND of his nephew

Authorities didnt mention any connection between the Dallas shootings and events at the Berrien County courthouse, but Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder said, This is a particularly tough time for law enforcement so I ask everybody to reach out and be supportive of law enforcement.

Gordon, 45, of Coloma was being held on several felony charges, Bailey said. It was not clear what the specific charges were.

He had been taken from a holding cell and was being moved to a third-floor courtroom for an arraignment hearing when he began struggling with Atterbury, Bailey said.

In that fight the inmate was able to get the deputys gun away and then shoot the deputy and then move out from that area and kill the two bailiffs, Bailey said.

The officers were shot in a part of the courthouse that is not accessible to the public, Bailey said.

Gordon ran into a public corridor, shot the woman and spent about five minutes in the courtroom area trying to take hostages before he ran through a door and was taken down by other bailiffs who responded, Bailey said.

Bailey said it appeared Gordon was not handcuffed. When asked if any rules had been violated in handling prisoners, Bailey said, We had no information he was going to be violent and not everybody who goes into the courtroom is handcuffed.

Anxious wait

Witnesses and family members of those caught up in the tragedy said that the immediacy of the threat shocked them.

Everyone else got evacuated, but not them so they mustve been right where it happened, Mike Remsey, whose his wife and daughter had visited the courthouse to fill out paperwork, told CNN affiliate WBND. Its a scary thing to come to a public place and have gunfire, and your family in danger.

One man, who was miles away, said he felt a range of emotions when he heard his wife was at the center of the shooting. Goosebumps, nerves, shaking, anxiety. All of it. How else can you feel?

Theres been a lot of stuff lately, and it scared me.

Judge: Court personnel put lives at risk

Michigan State Police and other agencies are investigating. The courthouse will be closed on Tuesday while the crime scene is processed.

Benton Harbor Bay Mayor Marcus Mohammed, whose city is right down the road from the Berrien County Courthouse, told WBND: We are joined almost like Siamese twins, were just connected. What affects them affects us.

Together we can pull through it and hopefully come out strong.

Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Robert P. Young, Jr. issued a statement late Monday, saying: This tragic incident is another sad reminder that courthouse employees put their lives at risk every day to serve the people of Michigan. As we await further details and the results of the ongoing State Police investigation, we stand ready to implement steps to further strengthen courthouse security to better protect both employees and the public.

St. Joseph is a town of about 8,300 on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, about 35 miles north of South Bend, Indiana, and some 100 miles by car from Chicago.

Fatal shootings have happened before in courthouses.

In 2005, Georgia rape defendant Brian Nichols seized an officers gun and killed a judge, a court reporter and a sheriffs deputy inside the Fulton County Courthouse in Atlanta. Before being captured, Nichols also killed a federal agent. He was sentenced to life in prison.

UFC sold for $4 billion, Dana White stays on to run promotion

UFC Has Been Sold for $4 Billion

LOS ANGELES (AP) The UFC has been sold for approximately $4 billion to a group led by Hollywood talent agency WME-IMG.

UFC President Dana White confirmed the sale of the mixed martial arts promotional company in text messages to The Associated Press on Sunday night.

WME co-CEO Ari Emanuel also announced the sale early Monday in an internal company email that included SNTV a joint venture between The Associated Press and IMG.

"We"ve been honored to have UFC and a number of its athletes as clients and couldn"t be happier to take our relationship to this next level as the organization"s owner and operating partner," Emanuel said.

White will stay on to run the UFC, which has grown from a money-losing promotion in a minor sport into a global entertainment brand. UFC owners Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta have tapped out of the company after nearly 16 years, although they"ll retain a minority interest. The Abu Dhabi government still owns 10 percent of the UFC as well.

The New York Times first reported the completion of the long-rumored deal. It has financial backing from private equity firms Silver Lake Partners, which owns WME-IMG, and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, along with the investment firm of billionaire Michael Dell, founder of Dell Computers.

"UFC has experienced tremendous growth over the last decade and we are looking forward to helping the organization and its athletes identify new opportunities to develop and further establish their global footprint," Emanuel said.

The UFC was founded in 1993 as the Ultimate Fighting Championship, staging violent fights that were banned or unregulated in many areas. The Fertitta brothers and White, their high school friend, purchased the promotion for $2 million in 2001.

With White as the promotional face and Lorenzo Fertitta as its chairman, the Las Vegas-based UFC was kept afloat by the Fertittas" casino fortune while the sport once labeled by John McCain as "human cockfighting" gradually gained widespread acceptance and popularity.

The UFC used cable television and the internet to get its intriguing product in front of young fans, and they also sought legitimacy by welcoming regulation by athletic commissions. New York finally lifted its ban on MMA earlier this year, putting the sport in all 50 states.

After helping Chuck Liddell, Randy Couture and Tito Ortiz become stars who straddled the line between sports and entertainment, the promotion now boasts a stable of elite athletes with mainstream fame, including Conor McGregor, Brock Lesnar and Ronda Rousey, who is represented by WME.

Although the UFC has received occasional criticism from fighters for its pay scale, its ability to control talent costs is a major factor in its profitability. Its position atop MMA also allows it to match the sport"s top fighters against each other consistently, setting it apart from the hopelessly fractured world of boxing.

The UFC"s price tag has drawn gasps since it was first rumored earlier this year, but the consortium is getting a sports property with a unique niche and ample growth potential.

WME purchased IMG, the sports and event management group, in 2013, and the talent agency has evolved into a multifaceted entertainment company. The organization already made moves into niche sports properties last year by buying Professional Bull Riders and forming an e-sports gaming league with Turner Broadcasting.

With more than 500 athletes under contract, the UFC stages roughly 40 events per year and is broadcast in more than 150 countries, reaching 1.1 billion television households. The promotion has built a large roster of endorsement deals and sponsorships, and its subsidiary ventures include everything from a digital streaming service to more than 100 branded fitness centers.

The UFC also recently began construction in Las Vegas on a 180,000-square-foot, campus-style corporate headquarters that also will house training and rehabilitation facilities for its fighters.

The UFC appears regularly on Fox under its seven-year broadcast deal, which ends in 2018. The next contract is expected to be extraordinarily lucrative.

On Saturday night, the promotion staged the landmark UFC 200 show in its hometown. The event drew 18,202 fans to T-Mobile Arena and took in $10.8 million in ticket sales, both Nevada records for the company.
