"The Infiltrator": Danger is drug of choice in this thriller

The Infiltrator Official Trailer #2 (2016) - Bryan Cranston, John Leguizamo Movie HD

Set in the seamy world of the drug trade, The Infiltrator is a tale of addiction but not to drugs.

Danger is the narcotic thats got the pictures principals in its grip. They know it could kill them, but they cant break free of its hold. In dangers thrall, where the slightest misstep could bring ugly, agonizing death, thats where they feel most alive.

The story of the Infiltrator is based on actual individuals and incidents. Set in the mid-1980s, it follows a trio of federal agents, Robert Mazur (Bryan Cranston), Emir Abreu (John Leguizamo) and Kathy Ertz (Diane Kruger) as they go deep undercover to disrupt the financial underpinnings of narco kingpin Pablo Escobars Medellin cocaine cartel.

The Infiltrator, with Bryan Cranston, John Leguizamo, Benjamin Bratt, Diane Kruger. Directed by Brad Furman from a screenplay by Ellen Brown Furman. 127 minutes. Rated R for strong violence, language throughout, some sexual content and drug material. Several theaters.

Mazur poses as a sharp-witted money launderer, Ertz as his glamorous fiance and Abreu as his street-smart, lowlife partner in crime.

Directed by Brad Furman (The Lincoln Lawyer) and scripted by his mother, Ellen Brown Furman (based on Mazurs 2009 memoir The Infiltrator: My Secret Life Inside the Dirty Banks Behind Pablo Escobars Medelln Cartel), the pictures great strength is its powerful performances.

Cranstons Mazur, a family man with a background in accounting, makes a choice early on to turn down the offer of a safe retirement to instead pursue corrupt bankers and cartel higher-ups.

The execution-style murders of some of the people with whom he has dealings, which leave him literally soaked in their blood, frighten him but dont deter him. Disciplined and almost insanely brave, he keeps his nerve and moves up the chain of cartel figures. He does this by earning their trust, trust which by the very nature of his role he will betray.

As he grows close to a cultured, ruthless upper-echelon cartel figure played by Benjamin Bratt, Cranston persuasively conveys how morally conflicted Mazur feels about bringing down the man who considers him to be a valued friend.

Leguizamo gives a looser, edgier performance as a guy who freely admits to loving the rush of living on the edge, while Kruger is silky smooth as a rookie agent whose composure and intelligence matches Mazurs own.

Though The Infiltrator breaks no new ground in its storytelling, it is nonetheless a riveting piece of work.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg faces criticism over Trump attacks

Ruth Bader Ginsburg Continues War Of Words With Donald Trump | MSNBC

Donald Trump called on Wednesday for the resignation of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.Trump took to Twitter in a rant against Ginsburg. USA TODAY

The back-and-forth between Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Donald Trump is getting messy and critics are saying some things may be better left unsaid.

Ginsburg has taken to criticizing the presumptive Republican nominee in recent days, saying she doesnt even want to contemplate the effects a Trump candidacy would have on the Supreme Court.

Its no surprise that Ginsburg isnt a big fan of Trump (she is known for her liberal views and was nominated by former President Bill Clinton.) But justices usually avoidcommenting on politics; particularly politics related to who should be the next president, likely to nominate at least one other justice theyll work with.

Trump has called on her to resign over the comments.

But Trump isnt the only one complaining. Many others are calling Ginsburgs comments inappropriate.

Both The New York Times and Washington Post editorial boards called her comments out-of-line.

The Washington Post wrote: However valid her comments may have been, though, and however in keeping with her known political bent, they were still much, much better left unsaid by a member of the Supreme Court.

The New York Times said these comments could force her future rulings to be called into question.

In this election cycle in particular, the potential of a new president to affect the balance of the court has taken on great importance, with the vacancy left by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia. As Justice Ginsburg pointed out, other justices are nearing an age when retirement would not be surprising. That makes it vital that the court remain outside the presidential process. And just imagine if this were 2000 and the resolution of the election depended on a Supreme Court decision. Could anyone now argue with a straight face that Justice Ginsburgs only guide would be the law?

House Speaker Paul Ryan a reluctant Trump supporter who does not hesitate to differentiate his views told CNN Tuesday that Ginsburgs comments are proof of the need for a Republican president to choose who goes on the Court next.

"I think it is out of place in an appointed branch of government. That shows bias to me," Ryan said during a CNN town hall. "I don"t think that is something she should have done."

And Florida Sen. Marco Rubio (who has endorsed Trump but makes it clear he doesnt support him on a variety of issues) had the businessmans back in this one.

But it wasn"t just Republicans who were critical, Democrats saw issues as well.

We all know that the justices on the Supreme Court have political views. Im not sure were well served by them airing them out in the open, said Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn. according to Politico. Those of who have been concerned about the open political leanings of conservatives like Clarence Thomas also have to be bear the same concerns about judges on the other side of the bench.

She may have got out over her skis a little bit and [been] more forthright and political than she should have been. Its very unusual, said Senate Minority Whip d**k Durbin, D-Ill., said according to Politico.

But The White House stayed out of the comments (kind of) when asked about them Wednesday.

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest declined to comment on Ginsburgs Trump remarks, but observed, She didnt earn the nickname The Notorious RBG for nothing.

Tom Brady in love-hate triangle with Trump and Justice Ginsburg

STEPHEN A SMITH FULL FACEBOOK RANT AGAINST TOM BRADY (7/13/2016)

Donald Trump, who somehow has made it into the finals to be our next president, and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the outspoken and spunky United States Supreme Court justice, have engaged in a very entertaining p*****g match the last few days.

Can Tom Brady, the star of the Deflategate sitcom, get sprayed in the crossfire?

Brady is The Donalds favorite quarterback and last season Brady displayed a Trump campaign Make America Great Again cap in his Patriots locker. Ginsburg, meanwhile, is expected to issue the final ruling whether Brady will miss the first four games of the 2016 season or whether his suspension will be deferred pending appeal.

Brady and Trump are not much more than golfing buddies, although the way Trump portrays it, he just about watches tape with TB 12. They are so close that Brady will not even be attending the Republican Convention next week in Cleveland. Then again, he didnt attend the Pats White House visit last year.

James Freedland: Ginsburg hates Donald Trump. So what?

So, how has Brady-Ginsburg-Trump become a political love-hate triangle built for reality TV?

As anticipated, the full 13-member Second Circuit Court of Appeals in New York ruled Wednesday to deny Bradys request for a rehearing of the courts three-member panels decision in April to confirm Roger Goodells powers and reinstate Bradys four-game suspension, which is now scheduled to be served at the beginning of the 2016 season.

Bradys next step is to ask the Second Circuit, within the next seven days, for a stay as he appeals to the Supreme Court to hear the case. The Second Circuit is expected to deny that request by mid-August.

The four-time Super Bowl winner will not be out of options and this is where it gets really interesting.

Justice Ginsburg doesn"t want to think about a Trump presidency

His last Hail Mary will be to ask the Supreme Court to issue a stay that will cover the 90 days he has to file a request for the most powerful court in the land to hear the case. The stay, if granted, will also cover the period of time until the Supreme Court decides whether to hear the case, which likely wont be until next spring. Because the season opens Sept. 11, there is a sense of urgency. Brady is free to participate in training camp and preseason games.

The Supreme Court would be expected to makes its ruling on the stay very quickly.

The circuit justice from the Supreme Court who is assigned to rule on matters coming from the Second Circuit is none other than Ruth Bader Ginsburg. She is a liberal judge and tends to side with labor. Thats great news for Brady. This case is no longer about deflated footballs. Its whether Goodell abused his CBA powers.

The bad news is Trump keeps boasting about his bromance with Brady. That clearly should not influence the ruling of Ginsburg, a woman of high integrity. If Ginsburg grants the stay, then Brady is clear for the 2016 season. If not, then he will miss games against the Cardinals, Dolphins, Texans and Bills.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg, down in the muck

I see Brady playing weeks one through four, said noted sports legal expert Daniel Wallach. With Justice Ginsburg the one deciding, things look pretty good for Brady. Its an easy decision for Justice Ginsburg to stay the suspension.

Even if the Supreme Court later decides not to hear the case, he will be able to serve the four games in 2017. But if she denies the stay and Brady eventually wins, he can never recover games that he loses, Wallach said.

Its unlikely the Supreme Court will decide whether to take the case before the end of the 2016 season.

Then theres the Trump factor.

Trump now attacking Ruth Ginsburg, says she should step down ASAP

What about Ginsburg saying, I cant imagine what this place could be I cant imagine what the country would be with Donald Trump as our president. She even brought up a comment from her late husband, Now its time to move to New Zealand.

Trump fired back at the 83-year-old Ginsburg on Twitter, of course, with typical class. Justice Ginsburg of the U.S. Supreme Court has embarrassed all by making very dumb political statements about me. Her mind is shot resign.

The Supreme Court receives thousands of requests every year to hear cases. They accept less than 1%, about 100 per year, which makes Deflategate a long shot to find its way into the courtroom in Washington. But hiring respected attorney Ted Olson, who has argued many cases before the Supreme Court, including representing George W. Bush in the ruling that eventually made him president over Al Gore, could help Brady get the case heard.

Can Trumps friendship with Brady impact Ginsburg?

This is not the same as Trump appearing before Justice Ginsburg, Wallach said. She is not going to recuse herself. The requirement for recusal is a higher threshold more than being a Trump friend. But it is an interesting dynamic. This will be the first instance in which a potential Trump-related matter is presented to Justice Ginsburg following her remarks. But its seven rings removed from Trump. Much is made of the friendship, but its probably no more than a public friendship.

Brady and Trump became friends after Trump asked him to judge a beauty contest following one of his Super Bowl victories. Can I just stay out of this debate, Brady said last season. Donald is a good friend of mine. I have known him for a long time. I support all my friends. That is what I have to say.

The best thing for Brady to do to ensure he"s in Ginburg"s good graces so he can stay on the field in 2016? Build a wall between him and Trump. Even offer to pay for it.

Bernstein: Joe Paterno Abetted Child Rape

Howard Stern on Joe Paterno

By Dan Bernstein

There can be no more attempts to absolve Joe Paternoof blame, no more wishful and willful ignorance of facts, and no more hiding from the truth.

Documents have been unsealed, and the sworn testimony is as stark as it is searing.

Joe Paterno ignored Jerry Sanduskys victims who had come directly to him to tell their stories and ask for help. Joe Paterno turned a blind eye to reports of rape, abuse and molestation from other assistant coaches who were eyewitnesses to Sandusky molesting boys. Joe Paterno chose to let a monster use the Penn State football program as a farm for cultivating children on which to prey. Joe Paterno knew what was happening, and didnt care. Joe Paterno himself decided to let Sandusky keep attacking innocent children, rather than cause discomfort in his kingdom.

All this we know from newly public testimony in a case that pits the school against its insurer todetermine who should pay the $93 million (and climbing) in settlements to boys raped and abused by Sandusky.

According to The Washington Post, the records include excerpts from depositions given by accusers who contend they reported abuse to Paterno or members of his staff in the 1970s and 80s. One man, identified as John Doe 150, testified in 2014 that while attending a Penn State football camp as a 14-year-old in 1976, Sandusky assaulted him in the shower, penetrating his r****m with his finger. The victim asked to speak with Paterno about it, the Post report said. Doe testified that he specifically told Paterno that Sandusky had sexually assaulted him, and Paterno ignored it.

The victims sworn recollection of the exchange with Paterno will sicken you, and will define the coachs legacy.

Is it accurate that Coach Paterno quickly said to you I dont want to hear about any of that kind of stuff, I have a football season to worry about? the mans lawyer asked him in 2014.

Specifically. Yes I was shocked, disappointed, offended. I was insulted. I said, is that all youre going to do? Youre not going to do anything else?

He then testified that Paterno simply walked away from him.

Get more commentary from CBS Local Sports Voices.

Here was the man behind the Great Experiment, the idea that a powerful football program could be underpinned by upstanding morality, citizenship and scholarship. It was a grand and glorious vision for which Paterno was venerated until he died in 2012. And all along the way, as this ambition was being fulfilled, Paterno was consciously allowing a child-rapist to roam the facilities, using the football program to insulate and facilitate his serial crimes over decades.

The pathetic attempts by the Paterno family to re-write history have to stop now, as does their disgusting, ongoing campaign to discredit abuse victims at every turn. This is the point at which they must stand down and be silent, sad and ashamed.

Those 200 players, just a week removed from petitioning for the restoration of Paternos statue, can be asked again why they hold that desire in their hearts. Outside central Pennsylvania, the rest of the world will keep wondering about the deep mental illness still apparently infecting so many alumni, fans and trustees. We remain amazed by its twisted thrall, its depth and breadth.

Penn State officials pay lip-service to healing, but refuse to stand strongly for victims by quelling the smoldering Paterno revisionists. All this new testimony should embolden anyone in power there with even an iota of human decency left to speak out, and try to move a haunted, diseased institution from darkness into light.

Reconcile the truth that Joe Paterno helped children be raped. Confront it, accept it, absorb it. Do whatever must then be done to move on with whatever is left of a self-image that could not allow this understanding, for either a conflicted university or any sorry individual soul.

Its time. It is far past time.

Remigio Pereira, the "lone wolf" Tenor who changed "O Canada"

The Tenors All Star Game Canadian National Anthem "Oh Canada" Remigio Pereira,

Remigio Pereira likes to bill himself as a team player.

Every decision we make is a group decision, the (perhaps former) member of the singing quartet the Tenors told the Star in 2010. When it comes to the group, we all have to want to sing something or it doesnt wind up on the stage.

Pereiras Facebook page features a close-up photo of a bright red flower with the message: Like petals to a flower, we all belong to each other.

So what was Pereira thinking at Tuesday nights Major League Baseball all-star game when he apparently stunned his fellow Tenors by changing the lyrics of O Canada?

RELATED STORY:

Remigio Pereira, left, holds up a sign as he sings modified lyrics to "O Canada" during a performance by The Tenors at the Major League Baseball all-star game in San Diego on Monday.(Major League Baseball)Remigio Pereira"s status with The Tenors was in doubt Tuesday after he changed the lyrics of "O Canada" during a performance at the Major League Baseball all-star game.(Damian Dovarganes / THE ASSOCIATED PRESS)

Were all brothers and sisters, all lives matter to the great, Pereira sang, instead of, With glowing hearts we see thee rise, the true north strong and free.

He also held up a handwritten sign saying united we stand and all lives matter, and made a peace sign.

Pereira did not respond to a request for an explanation from the Star.

The Tenors manager, Jeffrey Latimer of Toronto, could also not be reached for comment.

For their part, the other three members of the vocal quartet have apologized via Twitter to pretty much everyone on the face of the earth and called it a lone wolf act that was extremely selfish and shameful.

The Tenors, whose other members are Victor Micallef from Toronto, Fraser Walters from Vancouver and Murray from Port McNeill on Vancouver Island, are a Juno Award-winning quartet that tours the globe in tuxedoes and skinny suits, performing a mixture of classical and pop.

Pereira was with them from their inception in 2006, when they were called The Canadian Tenors. They changed their name in 2012, the year they signed a U.S. distribution deal with Verve Records.

Their first big gig was in November 2007 at the Winter Garden Theatre on Yonge St.

They are booked for the summer in the U.S. Their next scheduled date is July 29 at The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, on the same bill as Grammy Award-winning trumpeter Chris Boti.

Tickets were still on sale as of Wednesday, when comedian Mark Critch tweeted: #TheTenors used to known as The Canadian Tenors. Now they are known as the unbookable Tenors.

Pereiras actions lit up the Internet on a number of hashtags, including #lonewolftenor, #anthemgate, #tenorism, #TheTenors and #ocanada.

h**l hath no fury like 37 million people who are tired of being sorry #TheTenors, tweeted Ottawa journalist Mandy Kovacs.

Perez Hilton was among those stunned by what he heard, tweeting: Say what?! RT Canadian singing group #TheTenors added all lives matter to #OCanada!

B.C. musician Patrick Boyle was more amused than anything else, tweeting: Canada not immune to cowardly acts of tenorism. #lonewolftenor

Steacy Curry of Toronto was more sympathetic than many Tweeters, with the message: Its absolutely impact, not intent. But I do not believe that #RemigioPereiras intent was to be malicious. Hes clearly just ignorant.

Toronto musician Aime Page also wasnt impressed, tweeting: #RemigioPereira disgraceful and distasteful . . . very selfish act that did zero to help the cause :(

And Harrison Mooney of Vancouver added on Twitter: And now, please welcome the Tenors, to somehow insult the black community and ruin the Canadian anthem at the same time. Play ball!

Perhaps it was the tension of touring that drove Pereira to this point. It is not always easy spending so much time together, Pereira told Bostons Metro West Daily News in 2013. It sometimes feels like a marriage times four, but the work means a lot to all of us. We all have very high standards and a common goal to always do what is best for the band.

On Twitter early Wednesday, Pereira tried to explain why he went rogue and sparked a chorus of outrage: Ive been so moved lately by the tragic loss of life and I hoped for a positive statement that would bring us ALL together. ONE LOVE.

That was my singular motivation when I said all lives matter.

He added: I speak for the human race and the lives of all sentient beings. Love, peace and harmony for ALL has always been my lifes purpose.

Critch apparently wasnt impressed by his new spokesperson, tweeting: Hey Humans! Hey sentient beings. We have a guy to speak for us now. Remigio can be earths agent. #TheTenors

Following Tuesdays controversial performance, The Tenors issued a statement saying Pereira wont be performing with them until further notice.

The Tenors are deeply sorry for the disrespectful and misguided lack of judgment by one member of the group acting as a lone wolf today during the singing of the Canadian National anthem at the Major League Baseball All-Star Game in San Diego, the group posted on Twitter.

The other members of the group are shocked and embarrassed by the actions of Remigio Pereira, who changed the lyrics of our treasured anthem and used this coveted platform to serve his own political views.

Critch tweeted in response: Tenor was a Lone wolf. He was a tenor-ist. Canada, Lets pray David Foster isnt radicalized #Altolivesmatter

Pereira describes himself on Twitter as Proud Dad/ Multi-Platinum Juno Award Winning Recording Artist/ Song-Writer/ Producer/ CEO @artisgroupe / Vegan/ I am a Vega ambassador @vegateam.

And if he feels under attack now, its not the first time. On The Tenors website, Pereira talks of how he doesnt mind looking vulnerable.

The songs have everyones blood, sweat and tears on them, he is quoted as saying. This is what we want to show people. Its very humbling. Its like walking out of your house n***d. Youre opening yourself up and youre baring yourself.

The website describes Pereira as a multifaceted artist sought-after for his work as a vocalist, guitarist, composer and songwriter, whos fluent in four languages.

A former rock musician and self-taught guitarist, he switched over to classical music at the age of 23, when he was accepted to Le Conservatoire du Quebec.

He earned a masters degree from the Conservatoire in classical guitar performance.

When I was playing rock music, I really hated opera, didnt understand it until I went to university for classical guitar, he told Ellen Niemer of Alive.com in 2008. I met some singers there and thats how my love for it began.

He apparently didnt minor in math. Asked his five favourite things by Il Postino newspaper, Pereira replied: Music, love, s*x, nature.

Singing was something his late father loved to do, he told Niemer.

My dad would be able to hold a room captivated with his voice, Pereira told the journalist. I grew up with my father whistling and singing in the house. He used to serenade my mother. He was a very romantic person.

Pereira once said he began singing because he realized that playing the guitar alone wouldnt pay the bills.

He is equally inspired to sing an opera, as he is to write a pop song, a symphony, or a verse of poetry, The Tenors website states.

Pereira stuck to the proper lyrics for O Canada when The Tenors sang at the 2012 NBA all-star game.

He also managed to stay apolitical when performing at the G20 Summit and before world leaders such as Queen Elizabeth II and U.S. President Barack Obama.

Others in the group liked to talk about their teamwork as well at least before Tuesday.

Ill tell you the best part of the year for me, Micallef told the Star in 2010, Its been the four of us getting to know each other well and learning how to work together. Were a team now.

Pereira was born in Boston and moved with his family to Ottawa when he was six months old.

Pereira told the Metro West Daily News he was involved in teams long before he got into music.

In Canada, it is hockey by day and hockey by night, he said. As a boy, all I did was play hockey. As a teenager, though, I sustained an injury that made me realize that my dreams of one day playing competitive hockey in the NHL were squashed.

When hockey was no longer an option, I started thinking about music, and by the time I was 21, I was at the University of Ottawa studying classical guitar, Pereira said. Growing up, I was a big fan of Guns N Roses, Metallica, Van Halen, and Aerosmith, and so. if anyone asked me then if I would be singing in a group like The Tenors, I would have said, are you kidding?

Amazon Prime Day sales lower than expected

Best Amazon Prime Day Deals 2016!

SAN ANTONIO - Amazon prime day sales from third party merchants were about the same as last year, much less than expected.

It could be because there were problems actually buying those deals, with "add to cart" errors.

Small independent bookstores took advantage of the opportunity to make fun of the e-commerce giant.

Nobody Spending Money at Malls

Bank of America and Merrill Lynch has some more bad news for the malls.

No one wants to buy stuff anymore.

There"s a growing trend in customers" spending habits, according to this report.

Instead of purchasing goods, more and more Americans are putting their incomes toward experiences.

Fast Food Business Looking Up

The fast food business is suddenly looking up.

For years, the industry suffered from a perception that it serves unhealthy and overprocessed food.

People are returning to fast-food giants like McDonald"s, Burger King, and Wendy"s, with sales on the rise.

The fast-food resurgence appears to be largely driven by the industry"s cheap prices.

Pokemon Go Distracting Others

While it might seem obvious that you shouldn"t be looking at your phone for any reason while you"re operating heavy machinery, AAA would still like to remind all those Pokmon Go players to keep their eyes on the road and not on the app.

AAA says more than 600,000 motorists use a phone while driving in the U.S. and while you might think taking a peek at the Pokworld won"t take long, it"s just as bad as those other distractions, AAA says.
