Jay Cutler takes high road in reviewing Martellus Bennett"s digs

Sounds of the Game: Martellus Bennett

The Bears are a week away from their exhibition opener and trying to squeeze the most out of their remaining stay at training camp. On a somewhat eventful Wednesday at Olivet Nazarene University, here"s what we learned.

1. Martellus Bennett is still talking about Jay Cutler. Brandon Marshall is too.

Cutler"s reaction? Just plain amused.

Here"s the background: Bennett"s verbal swipes at Cutler came within a lengthy ESPN Magazine profile published this week in which the loquacious tight end and his equally opinionated brother, Michael, were asked to riff about several players and hot-button topics around the NFL. When the discussion shifted to Cutler, Michael Bennett, a defensive end for the Seahawks, called the longtime Bear the "worst quarterback in the NFL."

Martellus Bennett, who played with Cutler for three seasons before being traded to the Patriots in March, piled on: "I"d be open and he"d throw into double coverage," he said.

Marshall, whose fractured relationship with Cutler is beyond repair after his tempestuous 2014 season, spent part of his Tuesday visit on ESPN"s "First Take" offering optimism about his former quarterback. Said Marshall, entering his second season with the Jets: "I truly believe if Alshon Jeffery stays healthy and then you have Kevin White if this rookie can come in and catch 55-plus b***s, Jay Cutler can be an MVP this year."

Cutler was asked about the thoughts of both former teammates and simply laughed.

"Most receivers and tight ends (think they) are always open," Cutler said of Bennett"s claims. "Hopefully Tom (Brady) can do a better job of finding him than I did."

And what of Marshall again offering high praise rather than sharp criticism of Cutler?

"You can"t please everybody. We"re at both ends of the spectrum here," Cutler quipped. "We wish both those guys good luck. I had fun playing with them here, and that"s just kind of how it goes."

Asked later why his name keeps coming up with former teammates, Cutler knew better than to continue any easily sensationalized jibber-jabber.

"I could say something clever and smart," Cutler said, "but I"ll just pass."

Long story short: The Bears pushed to trade Bennett and Marshall to minimize melodrama. Given both players" track records with the Bears and their talkative personalities, their comments this week need to be kept in proper perspective: exaggerated opinions at best, hollow gibberish at worst.

Cutler"s taking the right approach and won"t lose sleep knowing both players are no longer his concern.

2. Kyle Long"s return to practice Wednesday came with plenty of eagerness.

Long was limited, but after missing four full practices with a calf strain he was simply glad to be back in the mix.

He suffered the injury during the first practice last week. Per his recap, he was "trying to chase Danny Trevathan for the dozenth time at a practice" when the injury occurred.

Long hates missing practice time and, by his own admission, still hasn"t figured out how to harness his restlessness when injured.

"It gets boring," he said. "I"m here to play football, and when I"m not playing football, I feel like I"m doing something wrong and feel kind of guilty about it."

The Bears appreciate Long"s drive but have made clear they intend to be cautious as they blend him back in. Coach John Fox said he"s keeping the Sept. 11 opener against the Texans in focus regarding Long rather than being concerned about the right guard"s availability for next week"s exhibition against the Broncos.

3. The roster churn continues.

The Bears signed cornerback Joel Ross and are expected to sign veteran fullback Darrel Young as they continue to shape the bottom of the roster during the camp grind.

Recently signed cornerback Brandon Boykin was placed on injured reserve; he tweeted Wednesday night that he had been playing with a torn pectoral muscle for five days without realizing it. The other corresponding roster move is not known.

Playing Ozzy Osbourne"s Ex-Mistress Michelle Pugh Files Defamation Lawsuit Against Kelly Osbourne

Michelle Pugh is not taking Kelly Osbourne"s comments lightly.

The 45-year-old hairstylist -- whose affair with Ozzy Osbourne rocked the singer"s relationship with his wife of 33 years, Sharon Osbourne, earlier this year -- has filed a lawsuit against the couple"s daughter after tweets she sent in May includedPugh"s phone number and suggested the relationship with Ozzy, 67, amounted to "elder abuse."

According to court documents obtained by ET, Pugh is alleging Kelly"s comments were defamatory, and that she has been "s**t-shamed, bullied and harassed" by the Black Sabbath singer"s daughter, adding the claim that Kelly "harnessed her celebrity and notoriety to incite her followers as well as the media machine."

Additionally, Pugh alleges that it was Ozzy who initiated their romantic involvement, and that the two dated in secrecy from 2013 until May of this year, while claiming that financial problems, and not the affair, drove Ozzy and Sharon apart.

The news comes after Ozzy revealed a years-long struggle with s*x addiction.

Over the last six years, I have been dealing with a s*x addiction," Ozzy told ET in a statement on Wednesday. "I am mortified at what my behavior has done to my family. I thank G*d that my incredible wife is at my side to support me."

Ozzy also apologized "if Ms. Pugh took our sexual relationship out of context" after she called him the "greatest love of my life" in a recent interview with People.

"Out of bad comes good," Ozzy added in his statement, in which he admitted to having multiple sexual partners during his marriage. "Since the press exposed this, I have gone into intense therapy."

DirecTV Dispute Q&A

NICHOLAS YOUNG @ RHYTHM IN MOTION 9 APRIL 2014

WTVA Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for DirecTV Subscribers

What is happening to WTVA on DirecTV?

WTVAs parent company, Heartland Media, and DirecTV are in the process of negotiating a renewal of the current retransmission agreement between WTVA and DirecTV. This agreement is scheduled to expire on August 10, 2016. Without a renewal, DirecTV will no longer carry WTVAs programming and content. Over the past several months, WTVAs owners have attempted to reach a new long-term agreement with DirecTV in the hopes of preventing any interruption of service for viewers. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts to move forward with DirecTV, little progress has been made.

Why can"t you reach an agreement?

For some reason, DirecTV has not been willing to negotiate appropriate market value retransmission compensation that other distributors are paying for WTVAs content. Primarily, Heartland Media and DirecTV disagree on the value of WTVAs programming and content. DirecTV resells this same content to you, the subscriber, yet refuses to compensate at a fair market value the highly rated and award-winning programming that WTVA produces every day for its viewers.

Why should DirecTV have to pay to carry television stations that are available for free over-the-air?

WTVA is available over-the-air for free to our viewers, but our signal is not free to pay services such as DirecTV that repackage our signals and sell them to their subscribers. In fact, the law requires cable and satellite providers to obtain consent for the right to carry broadcast stations and to compensate them in exchange for granting their consent.

Don"t television stations benefit from being available on satellite providers?

All channels benefit from being carried on a cable or satellite system. Cable and satellite systems like DirecTV generally pay for the right to carry stations and networks. We are simply asking to be treated fairly in being compensated. The right to request payment is something that the U.S. Congress has explicitly authorized.

Is there anything I can do to keep WTVA on DirecTV?

The best thing you can do is to let DirecTV know that they need to keep local channels like WTVA on their system to retain you as a customer. You have alternatives and you should let them know that you will use them if they don"t provide the same level of programming as their competition.

If this can"t be resolved and the stations aren"t carried on DirecTV, how can I watch WTVA?

Although we understand and apologize for the inconvenience caused by this to our viewers, you still have several ways to watch WTVA. WTVA is available free over-the-air by antenna on channel 9.1 and 9.2, and on Comcast Cable (800)-934-6489, Charter Cable (888) 438-2427, DISH Network (800) 333-3474, MaxxSouth Broadband (800) 457-5351and the smaller cable companies of your area. Most people have the option to use an antenna to receive WTVA over-the-air for free. Alternatively you can cancel your DirecTV service and choose to go with one of DirecTVs cable or satellite competitors.

How much money is involved?

The negotiations are still taking place, but what we can tell you is that the fees were requesting are a very small percentage of the average bill paid by DirecTVs subscribers. Heartland Media is requesting to be paid far lower fees than what DirecTV currently pays for other lower rated programming.

If the increase is that small why isnt DirecTV agreeing to pay it?

That"s a great question, but you would have to ask DirecTV. In fact, we suggest you get in touch with them to ask them just that. Who wouldn"t agree to a nominal fee per day for your whole family to receive some of the most popular, widely watched programming on television? You can call DirecTV customer support at 1-800-DIRECTV (800-347-3288).

The Cowboys have a quarterback crisis

TYRANN MATHIEU SIGNS CONTRACT EXTENSION! ROLANDO MCCLAIN & PURPLE DRANK! TRENT RICHARDSON CUT!

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

First, there was fat Tony Romo. Now, his backup, Kellen Moore, has a broken ankle.

The Cowboys" backup QB situation just got more confusing. The Dallas Cowboys suffered bad news today when backup quarterback Kellen Moore suffered a broken ankle.

Enter Nick Foles. Dallas has rookie Dak Prescott, a fourth-round pick, but that"s not the kind of backup situation they can really afford to live through, not after last season and with so much riding on this year. There are a lot of people who think Foles could be their next option. There are a few other names out there too.

THE HIKING VIKING:Moritz Bhringer walks the walk. Literally. He walks an hour everyday to practice.

THE PATS WITHOUT BRADY:How will the Patriots offense change while Tom Brady is suspended? Can one of the leagues most prolific offenses carry on without him?

GREEN BAY COMICON:Nobody in the NFL has the kind of established nerd credentials that the Packers do.

CHEAP a*s CHARGERS:Calling bullsh*t on Joey Bosa"s holdout. The Chargers are being petty. What else is new.

STAY OFF THE PURPLE DRANK:Rolando McClain tests positive for purple drank. It also led to an extra 40 pounds on his frame. Good thing he"s got a 10-game suspension to work it off.

Get all kinds of NFL stories, rumors, game coverage, and inane comments from the NFL media in your inbox every day.

MONEY BADGER:Cardinals make Tyrann Mathieu the highest-paid safety in the NFL. The Honey Badger signed a five-year, $62.5 million deal with $40 million guaranteed. It"s good to be the Honey Badger.

THE DREAM IS OVER:Baltimore Ravens waive Trent Richardson. An injury kept him from participating in the early part of camp.

THE KC MASTERPIECE: Stay humble, Kirk Cousins. Washington"s quarterback puts the aww in aww shucks.

CHARGERS REPLACE JOHNSON:James Jones signs with the Charger. With Stevie Johnson set to undergo surgery, the Chargers added some depth to their wideout corps.

ATLANTA ADDS A PASS RUSHER:What signing Dwight Freeney means to the Falcons. As a rotational pass rusher, its a great signing

BILLS SIGN BUSH:What will Reggie Bushs role be with the Buffalo Bills? The Bills are adding a punt returner first.

SEATTLE"S FRONT MORE FEARSOME? Seahawks training camp: Cliff Avril gushes over Seattles pass rush potential. Can Seattle improve from 18th in sacks?

CAN"T SPELL "ELITE" WITHOUT "ELI" Breaking down Eli Manning. What should we expect from the other Manning this season, at age 35?

BAD NEWS RAMS:Rams cancel "Rams Legends" game reportedly due to poor ticket sales. The Rams are off to a less-than-riotous start in their native Los Angeles. Just wait until they get a taste of Fisher Ball in the regular season.

Anton Yelchin"s Parents File Wrongful Death Lawsuit Against Fiat Chrysler

Zachary Quinto Emotionally Opens Up About The Death Of Anton Yelchin | Lorraine

The family"s attorney says Yelchin"s Jeep was part of a recall, and a notice that a fix for the defective gear shifter was ready came a week after the crash that killed him.

Anton Yelchin"s parents say Fiat Chrysleris responsible for the crash that killed their son, according to a lawsuit filed Tuesday in Los Angeles County Superior court that was first reported by the Associated Press.

The 27-year-old Star Trek actor died June 19 after his Jeep rolled backward while he was standing behind it, pinning him between the vehicle and a pillar and security fence.

His parents, Irina and ViktorYelchin, say a defect in the vehicle"s design is to blame for their son"s death and are suing for unspecified damages.

"Anton Yelchin was crushed and lingered alive for some time, trapped and suffocating until his death," reports the AP, citing the lawsuit.

The family attorney Gary Dordick saysYelchin received a safety recall notice in May and another notice was sent to him a week after he died saying the company had a fix for the gear shifter, according to the AP.

This comes on the heels of a $5 million class action lawsuit filed against the company, which also claims a dangerously defective gear shifter causedYelchin"s death and more than 300 other incidents. That proposed class includes all persons who purchased or leased a 2012-14 Dodge Charger, 2012-14 Chrysler 300 or 2014-15 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Fiat"s response to that lawsuit is due no later than Sept. 8.
