Mike Pence Endorses Paul Ryan: 5 Times The VP Candidate Contradicted Donald Trump

Military Mom Booed At Mike Pence Rally Speaks Out | Andrea Mitchell | MSNBC

A running mateis meant to shoreup or expandsupportfor the name at the top of the ticket. In other words, a candidate and his or her running mate are supposed to be on the same page. But Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, the vice presidential pick of GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump, sometimes seems like he is running an entirely different campaign.

Mike Pence "strongly" endorsedHouse Speaker Paul Ryan Wednesday, breaking rank with Trump, who has withheld his support ofthe Wisconsin representative.

"I strongly support Paul Ryan, strongly endorse his re-election," Pence said in a phone interview with Fox News. "He is a longtime friend. He"s a strong conservative leader. I believe we need Paul Ryan in leadership in the Congress of the United States."

Ryan is currently fighting in a competitive primary race against challengerPaul Nehlen, which will come to avote July 9. But Trump, perhaps in retaliation for Ryan"s rebukes of some of the nominee"s recent controversial statements, told the Washington Post that he was "not quite there yet" in response to a question about his support for the House Speaker. The quote itself seemingly doubles as a play on words and a reference to Ryan"s previous reluctance to endorse Trump for President.

Trump"s refusal to endorse Ryan has angered many GOP leaders, including RNC chairman Reince Priebus. Pence"s endorsement can be seen as an olive branch to the Republican establishment, putting himself yet again in the role of clean-up man for Trump"s controversialand bombastic positions.

Here are 5more times Mike Pence contradicted Trump in their still-new partnership:

1. Russia

When news broke that Russian intelligence agencies were suspected in the hack of the Democratic National Committee that revealed party favoritism of Hillary Clinton over Bernie Sanders, Trump made an unorthodox move. The GOP nomineeinsinuated that Russia should also try to find Clinton"s missing State Department emails, which have been the focus of much scrutiny from the right.

Pence, on the other hand, responded more conventionally.

"If it is Russia and they are interfering in our elections, I can assure you both parties and the United States government will ensure there are serious consequences," Pence said in a press conference at almost the exact time of Trump"s arguably treasonous comments.

2. NATO

Throughout his campaign, Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed that if he were President, he would be willing to pull out of NATO if member countries did not start contributing more to the military alliance group financially. He has suggested that the United States carries an unfair burden in the alliance.

However, many foreign policy experts, even those who agree with Trump that the United States is exploited financially in the alliance, believe that a willingness to back out on NATO commitments would be disastrous.

Pence seemed to contradict Trump on this issue, assuring voters that the United States would "absolutely" defend its NATO allies if attacked.

"We"ll uphold our treaty obligations, including the mutual defense agreement that is NATO," Pencetold the PBS NewsHour earlier this month.

3. Khizr Khan

Since the final night of the 2016 Democratic National Convention, Donald Trump has been engaged in a media feud with Khizr Khan, a Muslim-American lawyer whose son, Humayun Khan, was killed in the Iraq War in 2004. Khan accused Trump of disparaging Muslim-Americans and questioned if he had sacrificed for the country or read the U.S. Constitution. Instead of taking a more sympathetic stance to the Gold Star family, as most politicians would have done, Trump has continued to fire back at the Khan family, accusing them of courting media attention.

Pence took an objectively softer stance.

Donald Trump and I believe that Captain Humayun Khan is an American hero and his family, like all Gold Star families, should be cherished by every American," Pence said, according to Politico.

4. Muslim Ban

One of the cornerstones of Trump"s campaign has been his suggestion that the United States should temporarily ban Muslims from entering the country until the government can more properly address the threat of terrorism. Many people on both sides of the aisle have rebuked the proposal, noting that it probably constitutes a First Amendment violation. One of those people wasPence, who tweeted his disapproval of the ban before being selected as Trump"s running mate.

5. Name Calling

Donald Trump has introduced a new level of public discourse into presidential elections. From remarks about the size of his, ahem, manhood, to his perpetuation of conspiracy theories, like one that Texas Sen. Ted Cruz"s father played a role in the Kennedy assassination, Trump has set a new bar. One of the hallmarks of his politically incorrect candidacy has been name-calling. He has attempted to brand opponents like Cruz and Clinton as "Lyin" Ted" and "Crooked Hillary," while calling others "stupid," "low energy" or "a disgrace."

Yet, whenPresident Obama referred to Donald Trump as a "homegrown demagogue" at the DNC, Pence responded the next day in a radio interviewcalling Obama"s remarks unbefitting of his office.

"I dont think name-calling has any place in public life," Pence said. "I thought that was unfortunate that the president of the United States would use a term like that."

Pence did not seem to see the irony in the statement.

Martellus Bennett On Rob Gronkowski: "He"s Really [Expletive] Good"

ESPN First Take - Martellus Bennett Compares Tom Brady to Jay Cutler

BOSTON (CBS) Martellus Bennett is a man who tends to tell it like it is, and the fact that hes now a member of the Patriots isnt turning him into a shy person.

On Tuesday after practice, Bennett was asked what he likes about Rob Gronkowski on the football field.

Bennetts answer was as simple as it gets.

Gronk? Gronk is just really [expletive] good, Bennett said with a laugh.

After that, Bennett did get into detail about what it is that makes Gronkowski such a great player.

Its been a pleasure playing with him. I think weve been raising each others game. He does some things very well, and I do some things differently. The thing is, were built alike but were two totally different players. The way we run routes, the way we go about our business is totally different, Bennett said. Its been very fun playing with him. Hes very passionate, he brings it every single day in meetings, on film. And its just been a joy to play with him, because hes one of those guys that makes you up your game. And I try to do the same thing for him. I think weve been feeding off each other a lot. Hes been in this offense for a long time, so I just ask him a lot of questions and he helps me out a lot. Theres so many different plays. Ill be like, Hey, Rob, we got this on this play? And h**l be like, Yeah, thats what we got. I always double-check with him.

Before fully finishing the question, Bennett just had to reiterate: But hes really [expletive] good.

Review: Gwen Stefani brings Truth, Blake Shelton to DTE

Gwen Stefani said it would be a special night at DTE Energy Music Theatre, and she made good on her promise by bringing out her beau, Blake Shelton, as a surprise guest to join her midway through her concert on Tuesday.

Shelton hit the stage and joined Stefani to sing Go Ahead and Break My Heart, the pairs duet from Sheltons latest album, If Im Honest, about an hour into the show. As the crowd lit up, the two gently serenaded each other like they were all alone in the venue, maybe even getting a little lost in each others eyes during the midtempo country love song. At its close, Stefani threw her arms around Shelton and knocked him a kiss on the cheek, as he dipped backstage and ceded the show back to her.

Even with Sheltons cameo, Stefani was always in charge on Tuesday, powering through a 26-song, 110-minute concert that touched on her entire career, from her solo hits to her material with No Doubt. Through those songs the 46-year-old told the story of her life, growing up from punk rocker and ska scenester to pop princess and hip-hop cheerleader. Meanwhile the material from her latest album, Marchs This Is What the Truth Feels Like, very openly dealt with the breakup of her 13-year marriage to Bush singer Gavin Rossdale and her new relationship with Shelton.

Stefani, sporting the bare midriff she made her trademark in the 90s, opened with Red Flag, the most brash, attitude-laden song on Truth. She was backed by a four person band which included longtime No Doubt trumpet player Stephen Bradley, beefing up the similarities to her former band and a team of dancers, who filled in drumline parts on the cacophonous Wind It Up. As the show unfurled, Cool played like an 80s prom theme, Make Me Like You pulsated with a pounding drumbeat and Underneath it All introduced the first of five No Doubt songs in the set.

Her blonde hair pulled back into a ponytail with the ends dyed black, Stefani whipped around the stage and blazed through several outfit changes while emoting both in song and during between-song banter with the playfully broad theatrics of a vaudeville actress. She spoke about her connection to Detroit her father grew up on 8 Mile and aimed to build a rapport with the audience, a healthy but less than capacity crowd of mostly thirty and fortysomethings.

While some of the Truth tracks came off as clunkers Where Would I Be, Rare and Asking 4 It all fell flat the hits made up for the dull moments. What You Waiting For? thumped with new urgency, Naughty was a slinky burlesque number and Its My Life, a Talk Talk cover that No Doubt made their own over the years, has become a signature Stefani moment. Meanwhile, Hollaback Girl retained its pep rally stomp, Dont Speak became a big ballad singalong and Just a Girl, No Doubts 1995 breakthrough, remains a landmark girl power anthem. Closer The Sweet Escape, from her 2006 album of the same name, is one of Stefanis most shining, pure-pop moments.

Opening act Eve joined Stefani on stage to perform their two hits, Let Me Blow Ya Mind and Rich Girl, and both fared better than Eves subpar opening set. The evenings richest moments were all Stefani, though, like when she nearly paused Used to Love You to say, You know I was the best thing that ever happened to you, well now look at what you lost. Stefani is still getting some things off her chest, and her willingness to open herself up is why its so easy for fans to connect with her. Im feeling it! she beamed near the end of the night, during Truth. She wasnt the only one.

A Nike curse is hitting professional golfers - and it"s creating a perfect opportunity for Under Armour

Nike Golf Tour Van 2016 - Rob Burbick equipment talk

Rory McIlroy"s struggles could mean problems for Nike"s golf business. David J. Phillip/AP

Nike"s golfers are hitting a dry spell and the athletic apparel brand needs a win.

While it"s no curse of the Bambino, a Nike golfer hasn"t won a major golf tournament in the prior eight championships, ESPN Sports business reporter Darren Rovell noted on Twitter on Monday.

That makes this the longest drought for Nike"s golf roster since 2004.

Nike built its modern golf business on Tiger Wood"s success, signing the young superstar in 1996, when he was just 20. Wood"s Nike shirts became iconic, eventually spawning Nike"s Tiger Woods apparel collection.

With Woods, Nike had made its name synonymous with golf superstardom. Now, the brand is struggling to find a new savior and avoid becoming seen as a golf course curse.

Tiger Woods fall from grace began with a s*x scandal in 2009. While his comeback has been eagerly awaited in the last seven years, it has never come to fruition.

Throughout all of his struggles, Woods has stayed faithful to Nike, tweeting his support of the company in May.

With Woods unable to put Nike on the leaderboard, the sports apparel company has looked elsewhere for big names for its golf business.

Rory McIlroy seemed like the brand"s savior, with Bloomberg writing an article headlined "Rory McIlroy Helps Nike Keep Golf Alive After Tiger" in August 2014. McIlroy had recently become one of three golfers to win three majors by age 25, when he won the 2014 Open Championship in July.

"Rorys performance this summer has been electrifying," Nike golf president Cindy Davis wrote Bloomberg in an email at the time. "Nike Golf has a strong stable of global athletes including two extraordinary talents in Tiger and Rory. They are the two dominant players in golf who create the most energy around our sport."

Now, however, world no. 4McIlroy is struggling himself.

"What has gone wrong with Rory McIlroy and what does he need?" Philip Reid asked in The Irish Times, after the golfer missed the halfway cut at the US PGA Championship in July.

Nike has attempted to build out its golfer roster, announcing that 14 new golfers signed to the brand in January, including Brooks Koepka who tied for 4th in the PGA Championship despite an ankle injury. However, in July, Charl Schwartzel who had beenwith Nike since 2008 made the switch to PXG, a golf equipment company founded by GoDaddy founder Bob Parson in 2014.

Ultimately, Nike"s currentroster of golfershasn"t been ableto get a win in two years and the apparel company needs a win.

World no. 3 golfer Jordan Spieth adds legitimacy to Under Armour"s golf business. Christian Petersen/Getty Images

As Under Armour is increasingly competing for Nike"s customers, the company is moving into the golf business. The rising sports apparel and footwear company introduced itsfirst line of golf shoes in March, part of a more subtle and nuanced strategy for entering the golf business than Nike"s flashy, superstar-centric approach.

"The golf consumer can smell a rat," Ryan Kuehl, Under Armour"s vice president for sports marketing and sponsorships, told Business Insider in March. "We"ve got to talk like a golf brand. We"ve got to act like a golf brand. We"ve got to behave like a golf brand. And we have to build products like a golf brand for us to compete."

Nike can get potentially draw notoriously loyal golf consumers away from established golf brands, if the company can produce the results. However, with the current lack of champions, the shortcomings of Nike"sstrategy of relying on a handful of superstars is becoming apparent.

Right now, it"s looking like Nike"s golf business needs to breaka curse andnot just when it comes to winning championships.

Lines running into London Bridge station were shut "as a safety measure" and services cancelled, following the discovery of the 50cm-wide hole at Forest Hill in the south-east London.

It comes after 13ft-deep hole opened in the same area on 18 July, also forcing lines into London Bridge to be shut.
