Broncos LB Brandon Marshall protests national anthem in NFL opener

ESPN First Take - Brandon Marshall: "Jay Cutler Can Be MVP"

Colin Kaepernick"s national anthem protest seems to be slowly be gaining steam across the NFL.

During the NFL opener on Thursday, Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall joined the cause by kneeling during the national anthem.

The Broncos linebacker was the only player from either team who kneeled before the game. Also of note: Marshall was a teammate of Kaepernick"s in college when both played at Nevada.

The Broncos issued a statement after Marshall took a knee.

"While we encourage members of our organization to stand during the National Anthem, we understand and respect it being a personal decision," the Broncos said.

Marshall is the third player in two weeks to join Kaepernick"s cause. Seahawks defensive back Jeremy Lane and 49ers safety Eric Reid both kneeled during national anthem before they played in their final preseason game.

After the game, Marshall clarified this reasoning for kneeling during the anthem.

"I"m not against the military. I"m not against police or America. I"m just against social injustice," Marshall told reporters after the game, per to the Denver Post. "I prayed about this long and hard and decided this is what I wanted to do."

Marshall said he didn"t tell any other Broncos about his decision, other than tight end Virgil Green, and said he plans to keep kneeling going forward. He said he also plans to donate an undisclosed amount of money to causes benefiting veterans.

"I looked at my phone and I already have a bunch of hate comments and this is why I"m doing this," Marshall said.

When the rest of the NFL schedule kicks off this weekend, Marshall, Kaepernick, Lane and Reid could have some company in the protesting department. The Seahawks have hinted they plan on protesting as a team during their season opener against the Dolphins on Sunday.

Kaepernick has made it clear that he"s not going to stand for the national anthem until police brutality against minorities comes to an end.

"There"s a lot of things that need to change," Kaepernick said on Aug. 28. "One specifically? Police brutality. There"s people being murdered unjustly and not being held accountable. People are being given paid leave for killing people. That"s not right. That"s not right by anyone"s standards."

"What is Aleppo?" THIS is Aleppo

Hillary Clinton mocked Gary Johnson"s lack of knowledge about Aleppo

MSNBC commentator Mike Barnicle seemed floored, replying, "You"re kidding." Nope, Johnson wasn"t.

Johnson later said he understood Aleppo. But just in case he has a less-than-white-knuckle grip on one of the most pressing foreign policy matters facing the United States and world, allow us to explain.

This is Aleppo

A decade ago Aleppo was a bustling economic hub boasting more than 2 million residents. Its robust history and ancient architecture drew many tourists. After four years of hellish battle, it was estimated last month that the city was home to roughly one-tenth of that number, between 200,000 and 300,000.

Why the drop?

Brutal fighting, plain and simple. Many residents were killed. Others fled. Those who remained haven"t received much aid and are suffering shortages of food, fuel and medicine, a situation that grew only more desperate in July when President Bashar Assad"s forces bombarded a major supply artery into the city. The fighting presses on, and even after rebel forces claimed to break the siege in southern Aleppo, humanitarian groups say there"s been little change to the residents" plight.

What"s the casualty toll?

In Syria, it"s an estimated quarter-million. There are also 5 million who have fled the country, and 6.6 million people internally displaced. In Aleppo, the tolls are murkier. A recent report stated that 6,000 people, mostly civilians, died in 80 days of fighting. Last month, the last 15 doctors serving the eastern part of the city wrote President Barack Obama to say that a medical facility in Syria was being bombed every 17 hours. At that rate, medical services could be destroyed in a month, "leaving 300,000 people to die," they wrote.

Who"s dying?

The violence is indiscriminate, as evidenced by a suspected chlorine gas attack that injured children and killed market patrons in the eastern part of the city. A barrel bomb attack also claimed children as victims a few weeks ago. Watchdog groups blamed both attacks on the Assad regime, which has denied using chlorine gas for military purposes in the past.In another disturbing case -- this one with a happier ending -- doctors had to deliver the baby of a mother seriously injured in a bomb attack. The child wasn"t breathing as he emerged from the womb, but doctors quickly got his lungs working. His mother survived, too.

Who is going to win?

Likely nobody. Reporting from such a violent locale can be tricky, but earlier this year, CNN"s Clarissa Ward went undercover behind rebel lines to give a fascinating picture of what"s happening on the ground. Months later, she would tell the UN Security Council point-blank, "There are no winners in Aleppo."

Is any end in sight?

Well, no. This week, diplomats, politicians and soldiers met in London to discuss the situation, but their plan was billed not as a blueprint for peace but a starting block for negotiations.

As the war involves a cast of warring players who are unlikely to get along (and many of whom weren"t present in London) -- including Russia, the United States, Turkey, ISIS, Hezbollah and Iran -- many are uncertain this is the best path to bringing the crisis under control.

Fantasy Football: Seattle Seahawks RB Thomas Rawls could still get "majority" of carries

Seattle Seahawks Hype Video 2016-17 || "Bout The Business" || HD

SEATTLE, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said Wednesday that Sunday"s game against the Miami Dolphins will be the "second preseason game" for Thomas Rawls.

That"s not exactly music to the ears of his fantasy owners. Typically in preseason games, the stars play in limited fashion, ducking out after a few series. That could be what happens with Rawls.

But despite Carroll"s comments, ESPN"s Sheil Kapada wrote: "If he plays like the guy who led the NFL in yards per carry last year and feels good physically, Rawls could get the majority of the carries."

"Just in the amount of plays," Carroll told reporters Wednesday. "It"s the second preseason game for him, if you look at it that way, and we"re trying to take care of him as we"ve said all along, in every way that we can. We"re just going to watch and see how he does and how he handles it, that"s all. Just see how he handles it. That would be his only restriction, is how he"s taking the rigors of the game."

On Tuesday, the Seahawks listed Christine Michael as its starter over Rawls.

Rawls, 23, had 830 yards and four touchdowns on 147 carries last season for the Seahawks. Michael had 157 yards on 26 carries this preseason.

If Rawls had stayed healthy and was prepared for the Week 1 match-up, he would certainly be a top-10 play in Week 1. The Miami Dolphins allowed the most fantasy points per game to running backs in 2015. Michael is a high-end RB2 and a solid flex play this week. Rawls could still move into RB2 consideration, but currently appears to be a shaky flex option in deeper leagues.

Rawls was not listed on the Seahawks Week 1 injury report and is practicing fully. He is expected to be on a snap count against the Dolphins.

This situation remains one to monitor, probably up until Sunday"s kickoff.

"Did they tell me that it was going to be tough to get back? Yeah. But, I know that I"m built for it and I"m proud to say where I"m from. I"m from Flint, Michigan, where you"ve gotta be tough. And there is nothing that can stop me," Rawls told reporters last month.

Horse and carts granted extension in Melb

Mel B - 20 minutowy trening całego ciała

Horse-drawn carriages will remain a fixture of Melbourne"s city streets until at least mid-2017.

Melbourne City Council has come under increasing pressure in recent years from animal welfare campaigners to cancel the trading permits of horse-drawn carriage operators.

The trading permits expiry date has been pushed back from February to June 2017 to allow for wider community consultation about the long-term arrangement for operators, a council spokesperson said in a statement.

Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem mobile games delayed for Super Mario Run

Super Mario Maker: Super Mario Run Themed Levels!

What happened to Nintendos promised Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem games? Super Mario Run, thats what.

In a press release heralding Super Mario Run for iOS, Nintendo also announced a delay to previously announced Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem mobile games.

The two projects had been expected to launch this year, but have now been pushed back to sometime before the end of March, 2017.

Why? Because Mario, of course.

Based on a variety of factors, we felt it was most appropriate for Super Mario Run to launch ahead of these other two apps, Nintendo said in a statement provided to IGN.

News of the delay follows on from Shigeru Miyamoto telling Time Nintendo had revised its mobile release plans down to four releases before March 2017. It had previously expected five releases in the same period.

Super Mario Run will be the third release of Nintendos new mobile era, following on from the social app Miitomo and Niantics enormously successful Pokemon Go.

Pokemon Go is a licensed release rather than a Nintendo production, so it doesnt count as one of the four games were expecting before the end of Nintendos financial year; Miitomo, Super Mario Run, Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem are your lot so far.

Broncos can exploit the Panthers" biggest weakness

Thursday Night Football Promo: Panthers vs. Broncos

By Ty Schalter September 8 at 10:52 AM

Nine months ago, Carolinas secondary was the most intimidating in the NFL.The Panthers unit led the league in interceptions (24) and interception rate (3.7 percent), per Pro Football Reference. They allowed the third-least frequent touchdowns (3.2 percent), and joint-least average yards per attempt (6.2). All this despite a pass rush that ranked just No. 14in sack rate.

Then the Panthers rescinded all-pro cornerback Josh Normans franchise tag, releasing him to the free agent market. CarolinasNo. 2 cornerback, Peanut Tillman, retiredand safety Roman Harper re-joined the New Orleans Saints. Almost instantlyone of theteamsgreatest strengths turned into one of their biggest weaknesses.Last years slot man, Bene Benwikere, is now the Panthers top veteran corner.Benwikere has struggled to earn first-team reps throughout training camp, according to Jonathan Jones of the Charlotte Observer. Second-round pick James Bradberry will wear Normans number, and almost certainly start in his No. 1 corner spot against the Super Bowl champions. Third-round selectionDaryl Worley will likely start on the opposite side, meaning the Panthers are going from a top cornerback pair with a combined 202 NFL starts, 45 interceptions, three Pro Bowl berths and two first-team all-pro nods to zero, zero, zero and zero.

The Broncos, meanwhile, return nearly everyone from their league-best yardage defense, save rotational inside pass-rusher Malik Jackson. Running backC.J. Anderson re-signed, and together with Pro Bowl wideouts Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders, keep the explosive core of the Broncos offense intact. In theory, new quarterback Trevor Siemian has to do to get the Broncos back in the title race is improve on the 31st-ranked team passer rating of 76.3 Manning and Brock Oswelier combined for in 2015.

ButSiemians 70.4 preseason passer ratingproves hes not yet where he needs to be.The QBplayed it too safe in the second preseason game, completing 10 of his 14 attempts for a paltry5.4 average yards per attempt (and minuscule 7.5 yards per completion). But in the first and third games, Siemian was more aggressive resulting in far more big plays (and, admittedly, a poor interception in the third game). Overall, he executed catch-and-run routes to Thomas and Sanders very crisply, opening up more intermediate throws as the offense rolled.

After a series of in-breaking dump-offs to Thomas and Sanders, and a missed shot deep to Thomas, Sanders sells another in-breaking route to create massive separation and make it easy on Siemian:

The result? Very healthy averages of 12.4 yards per completion and 7.3 yards per attempt.

An added bonus of havingThomas and Sanders, two of the best catch-and-run guys in the business, is the Broncos can hit on big pass plays without seven-step drops. This helps ease the Broncos biggest concern: the offensive line. They finished No. 13in pass protection last year, per Football Outsiders, but only center Matt Paradis returns from that group.

If Coach Gary Kubiak game plans around the the Panthers front seven, Siemian should be able to complete a lot of high-percentage throws that directly attack the Panthers newest and maybe only weakness.Andunless Bradberry, Worley and safety Tre Boston step in and play like cagey veterans, Siemian and the Broncos have a great opportunity to pull off a season-opening upset.
