Shepard Smith"s Dire Hurricane Matthew Warning Goes Viral

Donkey of the day | Everyone Mad at Shepard Smith

On 6 October 2016, Fox News anchor Shepard Smith reported that Hurricane Matthew would likely kill all Floridians (and their children) in its path:

A smiling Smith gestured to a moving satellite map as he reported, stating:

[If Hurricane Matthew] moves 20 miles to the west ... you and everyone you know are dead. Because you can"t survive it. It"s not possible ... unless you"re very very lucky. And your kids die too.

Smith"s warnings were not exclusive to the brief and subsequently viral clip. A longer clip he anchored opened with warnings that residents who did not evacuate might "die a violent death," adding that his pleas were "not to scare you" but "to remind you what happened when Katrina hit" and that "some [victims"] bodies [were never] recovered."

Smith asserted that "Matthew [was] expected to be stronger and last longer than Hurricane Katrina," that residents who delayed evacuating "risk[ed] death on a freeway in a traffic jam from h**l later," and concluded "this storm will kill you ... it will kill your children, it will kill your pets."

Finally, Smith said of those who chose to remain in their homes that "we will not cover your funerals and we will not feel sorry for you":

The direness of the predictions wasn"t reserved for Fox News viewers, as Smith also phoned a friend on air and admonished her for not evacuating. The woman (Dolores Berhalter) told Smith her household was "hopeful" that the predictions were overstating the risk, and Smith responded by saying that "[residents] were hopeful in [nearby] South Miami-Dade and Kendall [during Hurricane] Andrew ... they were very, very hopeful until they were dead." He went on to scold Berhalter for not seeking shelter at his home:

Hope is not a strategy, Dolores! Why didnt you come up and visit us for the weekend?

Smith was not the only public figure plainly warning Floridians to evacuate or risk death:

Gov. [Rick] Scotts message to Floridians was equally dire in Thursday morning news conferences through the state.

This storm will kill you, Scott said during a morning briefing at the state Emergency Operations Center in Tallahassee. If youre in an evacuation area, get out. Dont take a chance.

Do not surf. Do not go to the beach. This will kill you, he added.

My biggest concern is people arent taking this seriously enough, warned Scott at his third hurricane briefing of the day from St. Johns County Thursday afternoon. I dont want people to lose their life.

Flanked by servicemen, Gov. Scott urged Floridians to "evacuate, evacuate, evacuate":

And an anchor on The Weather Channel warned viewers to brace themselves for a "heartbreaking loss of life," adding that Hurricane Matthew was likely to "make history ... and we don"t want you to be part of that history":

As of 7 October 2016, The Weather Channel reported that Hurricane Matthew had led to storm surge flooding of Florida"s northwest coast and broadcast social media photographs and footage of damage caused by the Category 3 hurricane.

The S&P 500 represents the industry standard for large-cap indices. While the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) may be the most visible stock market index in the country, the S&P 500 has long been relied on by industry insiders and fund managers as the more reliable gauge of portfolio performance.

While the DJIA is price-weighted and only includes 30 stocks, the S&P 500 uses a weighting system that factors in market cap and the size of a companys free float while including some 500 stocks for a more comprehensive look at the broader markets performance. Its performance is far more representative of the large- and mega-cap stocks for any period of time.

Chip Kelly Evaluates Blaine Gabbert"s Performance against Dallas Cowboys

Two Blaine Gabbert Scrambles Sets Up Carlos Hyde"s Goal Line TD! | Cardinals vs. 49ers | NFL

Chip Kelly told reporters that Blaine Gabbert played pretty well in a 24-17 loss to the Dallas Cowboys in Week 4. The San Francisco 49ers head coach reiterated that sentiment in his press conference on Monday.

Gabbert completed 16-of-23 pass attempts for 196 yards, one touchdown and one interception on Sunday. Kelly cited the quarterbacks 29-yard completion in the third quarter to Garrett Celek as evidence of Gabberts solid afternoon.

San Franciscos starting signal-caller threaded a pass to Celek downfield near the right sideline to beat tight coverage.

Thats as good a throw as youre going to see in this league, Kelly said. I mean, if I was coaching on the defensive side of the ball for Dallas, I dont know what to tell (Cowboys linebacker) Sean Lee. I dont think he could be any closer in coverage to him.

Gabbert wasnt shy about calling his own number in the running game, either. The quarterback posted 12 carries for 27 rushing yards. Most of those runs were decisions to keep the ball on zone-read plays. The Cowboys were aggressive on stopping Carlos Hyde, which meant the defensive ends were crashing inside. That left things open for Gabbert running wide.

Kelly said Gabbert could have had more yards on the ground had things been blocked on the edge properly.

I dont think our guys did a good job (to help Gabbert) out there, Kelly said. I thought he made some good decisions in the run game, but we didnt block up the guys that were coming who were responsible for the quarterback. Weve got to do a little bit better job on that but thats not Blaines issue."

Gabberts blemish on the day was a key interception in the fourth quarter when the signal-caller was looking to hit Torrey Smith on a deep post down the middle of the field. Smith had a few steps of separation on Dallas cornerback Morris Claiborne, but Gabbert underthrew his receiver and Claiborne came down with the pick.

Torrey did a nice job on the route, Kelly said. I think Blaine said it yesterday. He was behind him in the throw and he needs to put the ball out in front of him. He just missed on the throw.

Smith finished the game with just one reception for four yards. Kelly said hes not concerned by the lack of production from his top receiver. The coach mentioned that the 49ers figured theyd have an advantage in the middle of the field with Celek and slot receiver Jeremy Kerley.

Both of those targets were able to make the most of their matchups. Celek set career highs with five catches for 79 yards. Kerley caught six passes for 88 yards and a career long, 33-yard touchdown reception.

Were taking advantage of whats going on, Kelly said. I think we knew going into the game, we thought the matchups inside were going to be beneficial to us.

A Message to Red Sox Nation

Boston Red Sox: 20 Facts You Probably Didn"t Know

Hey Boston,

The playoffs start tonight. You ready? I know youre ready.

I know exactly how you feel right now. You wanna know something? Before I was a Red Sox player, I was a Red Sox fan. For real. Well, let me tell the whole truth so my mom dont get mad at me. When I was a kid, I loved the Atlanta Braves.

Come on, dont get mad at me. I grew up in the 90s! In the Dominican in like 1995 you could really only watch the Braves or the Yankees on TV. The Yankees? Nah, come on.

Fred McGriff. Javy Lopez. Marquis Grissom. David Justice. Those were my guys.

But when I got signed by the Red Sox in 2000, that was it. From that day on, I was like the biggest Sox fan in Saman. I had never been to Boston. I didnt really know where Boston was. It looked cold. But it didnt matter. For real, from the day I signed it was like the Red Sox were Tigres del Licey, my hometown team.

My only dream was to get to the big leagues and play for Boston. That was it. Nothing else mattered. The thing was, I could only see a little bit of the Sox on TV back home. So when I started playing minor league ball in the States in 2002, I was watching the Sox all the time. Id get home from the park and Id turn on ESPN, and my boys would be like, Why you watching baseball, man? We just played baseball for nine hours. Come on.

It didnt matter to me. I love two things. Baseball and fishing. Thats all I did. Its still all I do. My family gets mad at me because I come home from a game and I start watching baseball. Not like a highlight I start watching a whole game. My wife is looking at me like, Youre crazy.

When the Sox came back on the Yankees in the 2004 playoffs, I was playing Double A ball in Portland, Maine. I watched every game.

I remember Game 4, 12th inning, Fenway. This guy David Ortiz steps up to the plate and hits the walk-off homer. The fans are going crazy. Im going crazy. It looked like a winter-ball game in the Dominican to me. Thats how wild the fans were that night.

I watched that whole series, dreaming like, Alright, Im close. Someday, Im going to be there at Fenway playing winter ball.

It took me 12 years, but Im finally getting a chance to play playoff baseball at Fenway. Im just really happy to have that opportunity after how last season went. You know, in spring training this year, we all got together and set one goal: Get David a ring in his final season.

That probably seemed crazy to some people after we finished in last place, but you gotta understand something about David Ortiz and what he means to people. Before I came to Boston, whenever I would go to a dark place, I didnt have anybody to pick me up. David changed my career, my life and my personality a little bit, too. Hes like a big bro to me. But its not just me. Its everybody.

Before I came to Boston, whenever I would go to a dark place, I didnt have anybody to pick me up.

David will walk up to you in the clubhouse before a game and give you this look. He wont even say anything. h**l just look at you up and down and raise his eyebrow.

Youre like, Whats up, bro?

He says, Huh? Nothing.

The next day, h**l come into the clubhouse with a box for you. Like Santa Claus. Maybe its a watch, maybe some shoes. h**l just give you the look like, Nah, thats not gonna do. Next day, presents.

David brought me a whole cheesecake one day just because he thought I needed it. Randomly. Like he really walked in The Cheesecake Factory and got it on the way to the park.

Not his assistant. Not his homeboy. David did it, just because.

You see what Im saying now?

h**l just look at you and notice something is wrong, and h**l do anything he can to fix you up. Its the same thing on the field. If Im struggling, h**l watch me hitting for a minute and then say, Come on, bro, lets go to the cage.

We go to the cage and he tells me what Im doing wrong.

Its always simple. He doesnt fill my head with too much.

h**l say something like, Hands, bro.

And I know what he means. Thats it. Hitting is not so much about thinking. Its about feeling.

David will look at you and say, What are you feeling today?

Its hard to describe it unless youre a ballplayer, but to have him to talk to every day about hitting is really special.

David taught me how to pull the ball like him. He taught me how to prey on pitchers the way he does the same way that Manny Ramirez used to teach him. Im 32, and Im still learning. Im gonna miss talking hitting when hes gone. But what Im gonna miss the most is the energy he brings in here every single day.

People say hes old, but he dont look too old to me when hes dancing around the clubhouse every morning. Papi can dance, man. Dont be fooled.

We dont know whats going to happen in the playoffs. You can never know. But we just want David to go out happy, because he makes everybody in this clubhouse happy.

So heres my last message to you, Sox fans

You guys are always crazy. When I leave my house for a game and drive to Fenway, the streets are filled with people in Sox jerseys at like 3 p.m. Its unbelievable. Its like a football game. In Boston, every day is Sunday. I swear.

I know you guys are gonna be loud. Thats no question. But I want to hear some winter-ball noise, you know what I mean?

We dont know whats gonna happen, but you got a team here that never gives up. We got 25 names, but were all one person. We are gonna do our best so that David can go out dancing.

Lets go,

Hanley

"Birth of a Nation," powerful retelling of Nat Turner"s story, resonates with audience

THE BIRTH OF A NATION: Official HD Teaser Trailer
Nate Parker as Nat Turner in The Birth of a Nation.

If you can watch Nate Parkers Birth of a Nation and not leave the theater affected in some way or another, you just may not be human.

It is very powerful, declared moviegoer Andra Robinson of Brooklyn Park to the MSR after viewing the film. She attended the September 22 screening of the film at Southdale Malls AMC Theater. The movie is based on the story of Nat Turner who was enslaved but led a rebellion of slaves and free Blacks in Southampton County, Virginia in 1831. Parker co-wrote, co-produced, stars in and makes his directorial debut in the movie.

Watching Nation felt reminiscent of watching Roots when it first premiered in the winter of 1977. Both showed life for Blacks and Whites in antebellum America in not too flatteringly fashion.

The film chronicles the story of Turner from childhood to leading fellow slaves on a two-day rebellion shortly after his wife was brutally attacked by slave catchers for fetching water without her papers. Turner was excellently played by Parker.

Aunjanue Ellis and Director/Producer/Writer Nate Parker on the set of The Birth of A Nation

That scene was one of several that will make you wince at the thought that, as brutal as the on-screen depictions were Parker pulled no punches it merely scratched the surface of reality for Blacks back then.

It is something you should have dialogue about after watching the film, stated Twin Cities Black Film Festival (TCBFF) Founder Natalie Morrow, who sponsored the screening as a prelude to the 2016 festival October 6-9 in St. Paul.

Parker appeared at the 2008 TCBFF and told Morrow then of his plans to write and produce a film based on Turner. He took eight years to do it. I think Nate did a very good job, she said.

Since its premiere earlier this year at several film festivals, controversy erupted when accounts of Parkers involvement in a 2001 rape were brought to light. He was charged and later acquitted of the rape, and in 2012 his accuser committed suicide. Consequently, calls to boycott the film rang out by some on social media.

When asked, Robinson acknowledged that some may not go to see Nation as a result of the rape case, but she added that she hoped many more will choose to see it.

Morrow reiterated that the films powerful story was mainly effective because Parker told Turners story from a Black mans perspective.

We came from slavery. He [Parker] chose to educate those wholl watch his film, said Morrow. People dont often see what [Blacks in slavery] really went through. We dont know how emotional it was for them.

Finally, those who attended the screening offered no applause as the closing credits rolled. Rather, everyone briefly talked about the emotional trauma of seeing the movie and how they shared in the characters pain displayed on screen. [It] really resonated with me. I highly recommend this movie, concluded Robinson.

Birth of A Nation opens nationally October 7. Visit www.foxsearchlight.com/thebirthofanation for more movie information. Check local listings for show times.
