Clemson vs Virginia Tech prediction, preview: ACC football championship 2016

October 1, 2011 - #13 Clemson vs. #11 Virginia Tech

Which teams are going to show up for the ACC Championship Game?

Will it be the Clemson team that romped past South Carolina 56-7, Syracuse 54-0 and Boston College 56-10 and won 37-34 at Florida State? Or will it be the one that lost to Pittsburgh 43-42 and would have lost to North Carolina State had the Wolfpack not missed a chip-shot field goal as time ran out in regulation?

Will it be the Virginia Tech club that waxed division rivals North Carolina 34-3 and Miami 37-16, or the one that lost to Syracuse 31-17 and Georgia Tech 30-20, the latter with the Coastal title on the line?

The answers will be forthcoming when the Tigers (11-1, 7-1 ACC) and Hokies (9-3, 6-2 ACC) kick off at 8 p.m. ET Saturday in the ACC championship game at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Fla. ABC will do the telecast.

For third-ranked Clemson, the stakes are huge, because a victory is likely to mean a berth in the four-team College Football Playoff.

That Clemson is playing for a second consecutive ACC title and 16th championship in program history is no surprise. Yes, the Tigers had to rebuild a defense that lost eight starters from the 2015 club and had a key date in Tallahassee with Florida State.

But they also returned eight starters to an offense that ranked No. 16 in the country in scoring last year and No. 11 in total offense and had a Heisman candidate in quarterback Deshaun Watson to run the show.

Virginia Tech, however, was coping with all the trials that go with a coaching change. Justin Fuente came from Memphis to take over for legendary Frank Beamer and installed a more up-tempo approach on an offense while looking for a new starter at quarterback.

An early 45-24 loss to Tennessee seemed to confirm the media"s pick of a fourth-place finish for the Hokies in the Coastal Division, behind defending champion North Carolina, Miami, and Pittsburgh.

But the Hokies beat each one of those teams to earn their sixth appearance in the ACC title game, which is being played for the 12th time.

"The kids wanted to win and were willing to do whatever we asked them to, under no guise of a guarantee," Fuente said. "Kind of the way I put it to them is, if we do all these things then we at least have a chance.

"If we don"t do these things, then we have no chance, and the kids have bought into that and have done a good job."

Junior college transfer Jerod Evans has been a big key. He beat out last year"s backup, Brenden Motley, at quarterback and ended up setting Tech"s single-season record for touchdown passes (26) and total offense (3,752).

He passed for 3,039 yards, the second most in a single season at Tech behind Don Strock"s 3,243 yards in 1972, and also owns the school"s single-season record for touchdowns accounted for (34).

Such numbers actually rival those Watson put up for the Tigers. The junior, who announced his intention to enter next spring"s NFL draft, has passed for 34 touchdowns and 3,626 yards and is on a roll of late. Over the last three games, he completed 74 percent of his passes for 1,129 yards and 10 touchdowns.

"I"ve never been around a guy like this guy," Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said. "The moment"s never too big for him."

Both quarterbacks have a plethora of receivers to throw to.

For Tech, Isaiah Ford has 69 receptions for 949 yards, Cam Phillips 58 for 776 and Bucky Hodges 42 for 598. Mike Williams has 79 catches for 1,114 yards for Clemson, Artavis Scott 64 for 544, and Ray-Ray McCloud 44 for 434, and tight end Jordan Leggett 34 for 588.

There is also an interesting link between the two coaches.

Fuente, who was at TCU at the time, was one of two assistants Swinney interviewed several years ago for the offensive coordinator job that ultimately went to Chad Morris.

Swinney and Fuente have remained in contact since.

"I knew when they hired him it wouldn"t take long for him to get them back to this point," Swinney said. "I"m certainly happy for Justin and the job he"s done in his first year.

"He"s a great guy and a heck of a football coach. He"s going to do a fantastic job at Virginia Tech."

Prediction

Clemson has a challenge on their hands with this Virginia Tech team. The Hokies can put up points and if the Tigers look the same as they did against Pitt, an upset is quite possible. Look for this game to come down to the last few minutes with Deshaun Watson in position again to pull off some magic for the Tigers.

Pick to Win

Clemson 34, Virginia Tech 31

Saturday Night Live Is Basically Just Reciting Facts about Donald Trump Now

High School Theatre Show with Emma Stone - SNL
Kate McKinnon and Alec Baldwin on Saturday Night Live.

NBC

There are some places satire cant really go, and Donald Trumps already-disastrous reign as Our Last President is about four years worth. So Saturday Night Live is more or less doing straight reportage in this weeks cold open, taking America on a whirlwind tour to meet the people our President-elect spent his valuable time retweeting this week. Its kind of cute to see Pete Davidson give 16-year-old high school student Seth Morton (@FiIibuster) his 15-minutes of fame:

Pete Davidson on Saturday Night Live.

NBC

Its a little less cute to remember that Donald Trump actually took the time to quote this kids tweet, and a lot less cute to remember that the reason he did so was to defend his ludicrous lie that millions of people voted illegally.

Did Donald Trump really explain his actions, as Alec Baldwin does, by saying, I do it because my brain is bad? Well, to quote a 16-year-old with the President-elects ear, you have no sufficient evidence that Donald Trump did not. Also dont miss Steve Bannons surprise cameo.

Update: Surprising no one, Donald Trump found time to watchSaturday Night Live, take it personally, and respond on Twitter:

SEC championship: Alabama-Florida looks like massive mismatch

Jalen Hurts Interview After SEC Championship

By Paul Newberry

AP Sports Writer

ATLANTA Talk about a mismatch. Alabamas defense is the best in the nation. Floridas offense looks like one of the worst.

Theyll face off today in the Southeastern Conference championships game, with the top-ranked Crimson Tide (12-0, 8-0 SEC) heavily favored to lock up its third straight trip to the College Football Playoff with a victory over the No. 15 Gators (8-3, 6-2).

Alabama has not given up a defensive touchdown in 17 quarters, a span that covers its entire November schedule. The Tide leads the nation in three major categories, giving up the fewest points, rushing yards and total yards.

When we go out there Saturday, we just try to dominate, defensive lineman Jonathan Allen said. Just do your job and just dominate the opposing offense. Thats the legacy.

Florida will get a jarring reminder of its high-scoring legacy when former coach Steve Spurrier helps with the coin toss before the game.

These Gators are certainly a long way from the Fun n Gun days.

Over its last 10 quarters, Florida has scored just one offensive touchdown a 98-yard pass from Austin Appleby to Tyrie Cleveland that sparked an SEC East-clinching win over LSU. The Gators rank No. 114 nationally in total yards, ahead of only six other Power Five schools, and they havent shown much ability to move the ball either running or passing.

Now, this offensively challenged team must contend with the stingiest defense in the land.

Coach Jim McElwain joked that it might be best to skip the filmwork this week, just so his players wouldnt realize what theyre up against.

Then he turned serious.

The thing you point out is really how close you are from a consistency standpoint, McElwain said, doing his best to put a positive spin on such a dire predicament. We had our opportunities last couple games, yet the mindset of finishing is something we have to do.

Good luck with that against the Tide, which has given up 10 points or less in eight games.

Obviously with these guys that were playing, the thing that really stands out is how short the explosive play reel is when you look at it, McElwain said. They dont give a lot of big plays up. Youve got to go earn it.

Under coach Nick Saban, Alabama has certainly earned the right to be called one of college footballs greatest dynasties. Since the beginning of the 2008 season, the Tide is 110-12 with four national championships.

Saban has won five national titles during his career, leaving him one shy of the record held by Bear Bryant.

Of course, Saban is merely focused on the next one.

Cant really fall in love with what weve done in the past, he said.

Joss Whedon: DC"s Movies Are "More Cinematic" Than Marvel"s

The Last of Us 2 Trailer - FULL The Last of Us 2 Official Reveal + Analysis (TLOU Part II PS4 Pro)

Directorial megastar, nerdy icon, or notorious iconoclast? Classic purveyor of one-liners, inspired universe builder, or accidental misogynist? Underrated legend, correctly rated genre expert, or overrated egotist? #JossWhedon has been called a whole lot of things during his time in the #Hollywood spotlight, and not all of them have been entirely positive. And yet, no matter what anyone might think of the man, there"s one thing that everyone can surely agree on: Joss Whedon is a massive geek.

Whether conjuring an expansive television universe from a vampire-ridden high school, turning Neil Patrick Harris into a singing supervillain, or throwing #TheAvengers into internal fist fights like a kid with his action figures, Whedon has always seemed (for lack of a better phrase) to be one of us. He"s a geek, a dork, a nerd. He"d have been the kid back in high school who ruled the A.V. Club with an iron fist, sure, but he sure as h**l would have been there every meeting. So, comic book movies aren"t just a gig for him they"re what he desperately wanted to watch when he was a kid, too.

[The Avengers/Marvel Studios]

All of which essentially means one key thing: When Whedon offers his opinion on the differing cinematic approaches of Marvel and DC, it"s pretty much guaranteed to be worth hearing him out. Which, of course, makes it all the more convenient that...

[Avengers: Age of Ultron/Marvel Studios]

And, as it turns out, they"re as thoughtful (and geeky) as you might imagine. They"re also, however, far more positive about DC than you might expect from a man who has been Marvel Studios-affiliated for the past several years, and more positive about Marvel than you might expect from a man who reportedly left the company on bad terms after making Avengers: Age of Ultron. In Whedon"s recent interview with Complex, though, there didn"t seem to be any hint of ill feeling, with the director instead revealing that:

"I did not see "Suicide Squad." I saw "Batman vs. Superman." Everybodys got their own method. I think Marvel has been more successful systematically. DC has been more cinematictheir stuff looks amazingbut I feel like Kevin [Feige, President of Marvel Studios] is a really good storyteller. He really cares about coherence, and I feel like style never defeats substance at Marvel, but a little style creeps in. "Ant-Man" had some, "Doctor Strange" might be funky, and they are doing very fun things on TV. The Marvel-Netflix thing is working really well. DCs decision to have their shows on TV with different actors playing the same characters at the same time as their movies, is a little interesting... My daughter is p****d: "That"s not the Flash! The Flash is this guy! But we watch the Flash and Supergirl every week."

Which, as far as reasoned, balanced analyses of the Marvel/DC divide go, is probably up there with the best of them even if his thoughts on DC being "more cinematic" might be considered surprising by many. What"s more, Whedon had a whole lot of praise reserved for DC"s upcoming Wonder Woman, despite having spent much of the 2000"s trying to get a solo movie made himself:

[Wonder Woman/Warner Bros.]

"I want it to be good. The trailer was just wonderful. Ill probably be disappointed, me more than anybody else, because Ill be like, "Wow, my version..." or whatever, but I can still get myself up for it. The trailer had her shield and her fire hammer and yep, Im good, this will be fine, everything is good."

Which is a) really rather sweet, and b) probably a pretty solid approach to take.

Perhaps the most intriguing reveal from Whedon, though? He"s still very much up for diving back into a major studio movie:

[Avengers: Age of Ultron/Marvel Studios]

"I mean, its a fun thing to do, to put yourself in the service of something if you think you can add an interpretation. Its no different than any other storytelling. There are some times when you get micro-managed to death, but with Marvel, they let me make two movies that were very much mine. So do I want to make James Bond movie? Yeah. Anne Hathaway does Catwoman again? Sure, Im in. Do I want to make a Star Wars movie? Yeah. I was like, "I don"t want to make a Star Wars movie. Like, G*d dammit, why?" But I saw the trailer for "Rogue" awhile ago and I was like, "I want to do that." To make a Star Wars movie and not be wed to the bigger picture."

Which, in the context of his rumored struggles with Marvel Studios, is intriguing doubly so because the box office success of The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron likely gives Whedon a pretty good chance of getting one of the directing gigs he mentioned one day. The creator of #Firefly getting to play in the #StarWars sandbox? Now that"s something to get excited about.

Still want more on what Whedon"s been up to lately, though? Never fear, we"ve got you covered right here.

In the meantime, what do you think? What major franchise would you like to see Whedon take a crack at? Let us know below!

What"s Bruin 2: The UCLA Basketball Is Better Than Kentucky Review

Lonzo Ball UCLA Full Highlights 11.11.16 vs. Pacific - 19 Pts, 11 Ast, 8 Rebs, Bruins Debut!

BOOM! We have a very special episode of the Whats Bruin Show. So special it will blow your head clean off!

MORE PODCASTS: Whats Bruin Show Archive

In the first part, we talk to Jeff Kohl and Kyle Grozen, President and Vice-President of The Den, UCLAs student section.

They fill us in on a couple of things that have been proposed for the Rose Bowl and Pauley Pavilion.

If you have not heard, the UCLA Football team is trying to move to the shady side of the Rose Bowl, but that will take a little bit of work which concerns The Den.

If the team moves to the shady side of the stadium, the student section must move as well. Per the Pac-12 Conference, a student section cannot be behind the opposing sideline.

This could move The Den to the north end zone. Kohl and Grozen expand on what else needs to be done and how close this is to become a reality. They also talk about a possible Blue Out at Pauley Pavilion this season.

We then turn to UCLA Basketball who dropped #1 Kentucky in Lexington. I analyze what went right, who were the big time players and what this means going forward.

Either way, it was a great win as the 9-0 UCLA Bruins as they beat Kentucky in consecutive seasons.

All of this and more in this special edition of WB2. Also available atPodomatic.com,iTunesandStitcher.
