Reggie Jackson can finally play his game

The Thunder guard never quite fit in Oklahoma City, but he's lucky to have found Stan Van Gundy.

Reggie Jackson never fit with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

He had some moments, sure. He had a few big games. But through the entirety of his tenure, Jackson was desperate for a role that gave him freedom to run an offense his way, a role the Thunder never had for him. Once he couldn't get it, he shrunk into a hole and alienated teammates.

Now, he has his chance. On Thursday just minutes before the deadline, the Pistonsswung a deal with the Thunder to bring Jackson to Detroit in exchange for D.J. Augustin and Kyle Singler. In a crisper Stan Van Gundy offense without two superstars to feed, Jackson has his chance to prove he was always too good for the supporting role he held with the Thunder for the past four years.

Jackson has always needed the ball in his hands to be effective, but with Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant in charge, the Thunder had no choice but to play him off the ball for large stretches. In his three-plus seasons, he did so dutifully, taking advantage of his chances to create offense with the second unit. Last season was his best, as he shot a career-high 34 percent from the three-point line and filled in admirably for the injured Westbrook.

But that taste only added to his ambition. When Westbrook and Durant were both injured to start the season, Jackson got his chance to really be a lead option. It was long enough that he couldn't regress and run tertiary sets while spotting up in the corner, especially after the Thunder added yet another mouth to feed in Dion Waiters.

SB Nation presents: The three biggest trades at this year's deadline

In those first 13 games to start this year, Jackson averaged 20.2 points and 7.8 assists in 38.9 minutes a game. He was taking 18 shots a game (hitting 42 percent) and getting to the free throw line nearly five times. Since Westbrook and Durant returned, Jackson's averages fell to 24 minutes and nine shots. No wonder he was frustrated.

That drop was bound to happen. Jackson's is in the bottom quarter of the league as a spot-up shooter, hitting only 28.6 percent of his shots when asked to do so, per Synergy Sports Technology.

What Jackson wanted to do more of was create his own offense, which is why he requested a trade from Oklahoma City shortly before the deadline. Jackson is an excellent pick-and-roll ball handler and isolation player, ranking in the top 15 percent of the NBA in both categories, per Synergy. Only six other players with a comparable number of possessions (80 or more) score more points per isolation possession than Jackson's 1.01.

Jackson's attitude all season may not have been conducive to success, but he certainly had a point that his talents couldn't be maximized.

They can now. In making the trade, Detroit showed it sees Jackson for his strengths as a penetrating pick-and-roll monster. It's clear Stan Van Gundy believes that role is far better suited to Jackson than any one he filled with the Thunder.

Van Gundy's last coaching job centered around a dominant Dwight Howard in the middle, and this one does the same with the combination of Andre Drummond and Greg Monroe. However, the Magic's success hinged on Jameer Nelson, a small, pick-and-roll heavy guard who could create offense out of nothing. Nelson was in the top ten percent of the league as a pick-and-roll ball handler and the best guard in the league in isolation in 2008-09, the year Orlando made the Finals, per Synergy.

Van Gundy must see some of Nelson in Jackson. It's not a perfect comparison -- Jackson's bigger, better at the rim and much worse from the perimeter. But Nelson, like Jackson, only needed an opportunity. Van Gundy gave it to him, spread the floor and watched Nelson blossom. The same could happen to Jackson, whether in the final 30 games or if (and when) the Pistons re-sign him as a restricted free agent.

Sending away Augustin, who had been incredible as a starter since Brandon Jennings tore his Achilles, is a risk. In 13 games, Augustin was averaging 18.7 points on 45 percent shooting from the field and 7.8 assists. Keeping Augustin would have been the safer move, especially if Detroit wanted to make a playoff push.

Instead, Detroit showed it is building for the future. Augustin is an NBA journeyman at 27 years old, with career averages of 10.2 points and 40.4 shooting from the floor. Assuming that 13-game stretch means Augustin could average 19 and 8 for a season is foolish. If anything, Augustin's success shows the value of Van Gundy's system: plug a more talented point guard into Augustin's spot and his numbers could be even better.

Jackson is a complicated player with some clearly defined strengths, something his role in Oklahoma City did a poor job of complementing.

In Detroit, nothing is holding Jackson back. It's the situation he wanted.

Sam Presti's belief in Reggie Jackson was misplaced

The last time Sam Presti addressed the media, Thundertown mightve been mistaken for Pleasantville.

Training camp hadnt started that September morning, so that meant the injuries and the losses and the doubts and the swarms of locusts and the days of darkness had yet to befall the land. Everyone was happy and healthy.

Well, almost everyone.

Reggie Jackson had said several times that he wanted to be a starting point guard. So, with the window on signing Jackson to a contract extension quickly closing, I asked Presti about Jackson: His stated desire to want to be a starter how troublesome is that considering youve already got a pretty good one?

I wouldnt characterize it as troubling at all, Presti replied. It would be troubling to me if he wasnt confident in himself and didnt see himself as a very important player to this team.

At the same time, weve never ever in our history here had a situation where weve had any issues regarding whats most important. And the most important thing once training camp starts is winning.

Perhaps thats what Presti really, truly believed. Sure, Jackson mightve said starting was important, but surely, the guy would fall in line and be a team player when it was obvious that this isnt one of the 10 or so NBA cities where Jackson can be the starting point guard right now.

But clearly, Prestis belief in Jackson was misplaced.

Completely and totally.

Wednesday, a day before the NBA trade deadline, we learned that Jackson wants out of Oklahoma City and he wants out now. Yahoo Sports broke the news that Jacksons agent asked Presti that his client be traded.

This puts the Thunder in a huge bind.

Teams know that Jackson wants out, so theyve got leverage on Presti. They might desperately need a young, talented point guard. They might be willing to part with some pieces the Thunder would covet. But they might offer less because Jackson has asked for a trade and Presti is backed into a corner.

This team wants to make a run at the playoffs, maybe even surprise a few folks once it gets there. Can Presti get something in return for Jackson that enables the Thunder to do those things?

And what if no deal gets done? Will Jackson accept it, see the rest of the season as an audition for the other 29 teams in the league and play lights out? Or will he mope and pout and bring down the guys around him?

Some year-round schools could make up snow day on Saturday

Cary, N.C. Hundreds of year-round students in Wake County could be in school Saturday after missing school for four days this week.

Year-round schools in tracks one, three and four could make up Tuesday's snow day Saturday if the weather improves enough for safe travel to schools, a Wake County Public Schools spokesperson said. Officials were planning to make that decision official during the day Friday.

Traditional-calendar schools will make up Tuesday's snow day on Monday, March 23, the first day of spring break for students.

Modified-calendar schools will make up Tuesday's snow day on March 9. Year-round, track two students are not in session this week, so no make-up days are required.

School officials have not announced details about how Wednesday, Thursday and Friday snow days will be made up.

Former NBA Player Jerome Kersey Dies at 52

Cameron Browne/Getty Images

Longtime Portland Trail Blazers small forward and 17-year NBA veteran Jerome Kersey died Wednesday at the age of 52.

KGW News in Portland confirmed Kersey's passing via a Trail Blazers team representative:

Mike Tokito of The Oregonian had Blazers owner Paul Allen's statement on Kerseyas well as thoughts from President and CEO Chris McGowan and the team's president of basketball operations, NeilOlshey:

"Today we lost an incredible person and one of the most beloved players to ever wear a Trail Blazers uniform," said Trail Blazers Owner Paul Allen. "My thoughts and condolences are with the Kersey family. He will be missed by all of us. It's a terrible loss."

"We're shocked to lose such a great member of our Trail Blazers family," said Trail Blazers President and CEO Chris McGowan. "The news is so sudden, and we're sure more details will be forthcoming. But it is indeed a sad day for our organization, the city of Portland and the NBA. Jerome will be remembered not only for his incredible contributions on the court, but his tremendous impact in our community."

"Jerome was an incredible influence on our players as a model for life after basketball," said Trail Blazers President of Basketball Operations Neil Olshey. "He set the bar extremely high with his long-lasting influence in this community."

Jason Quick of The Oregonian also had Steve Blake's thoughts on why he switched from No. 25 to 5 in Portland:

Blake, the Trail Blazers top reserve, felt a special connection with Kersey that none of us can imagine.

Blake, you see, wears the No. 25 that Kersey made so famous in Rip City.

"It was always an honor to wear that number, knowing what he meant to the organization and the fans here,'' Blake said.

Blake wanted to make sure No. 25 in Portland was preserved and honored. He wanted to change his number.

"To honor him,'' Blake said. "To honor his jersey.''

Blazers TV personality Mike Rice reached out upon hearing the news:

Dan Woike of theOrange County Register weighed in:

Statistically, Kersey peaked in the 1987-88 season when he averaged 19.2 points, 8.3 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.6 steals per contest.Kersey maintained a similarly high level of play as a Trail Blazer and had a career-best 8.8 win shares in 1989-90.

After a largely successful 11 seasons in Portland, he bounced around to five other squads, managing to win an NBA championship with the San Antonio Spurs in 1999.

Kersey is revered by many for his legacy as a player. Based on the outpouring of support following his passing, his personality clearly left an impact on those associated with the NBA as well.

Why Iggy Azalea is taking a break from Twitter

Rapper Iggy Azalea attends the 57th annual Grammy Awards on Feb, 8, 2015, in Los Angeles. Jason Merritt/Getty Images

Iggy Azalea is fed up with Twitter -- so much so that she's letting her management team run her account from here on out.

After returning from a romantic trip with Los Angeles Laker Nick Young, the Australian rapper discovered she had been photographed and subsequently criticized online for her beach body.

The musician, 24, expressed her disappointment in a series of tweets:

Azalea -- whose North American concert series begins April 14 -- added, "The Internet is the ugliest reflection of man kind there is."

The "Fancy" rapper recently used Twitter to wage war on Papa John's Pizza after an employee allegedly shared her contact information. She's also been the target of numerous social media wars this year -- including one with Snoop Dogg.

Iggy, it sounds like you'll have one less problem without social media!

Goran Dragic is leaving the Phoenix Suns, but where is he going?

(USA TODAY Sports Images)

Goran Dragic wants out of Phoenix.

He made that abundantly clear after a Wednesday practice session. I dont trust them anymore, Dragic said of the Suns front office. Considering Dragic will be a free agent in July, the Suns must now trade for him or risk losing him for nothing. With the trade deadline fast approaching (3 p.m. ET Thursday), both Dragic and the Suns have huge decisions to make that will have even bigger implications down the road. How did we get here?

The Suns rocked the boat

18 months ago, nobody figured the Phoenix Suns would amount to anything. Then they found themselves making a late push for the playoffs last season under head coach Jeff Hornacek, running an amorphous and wide open offense with the two-headed point guard monster of Goran Dragic and Eric Bledsoe that worked like magic for them. The balance was delicate and perfect like a band with two frontmen but neither cared about being lead singer. Dragic was All-NBA third-team and averaged 20.3 points and 5.9 assists in 35.1 minutes per game. The slightest change couldve thrown everything out of wack.

Jennifer Stewart/USA TODAY Sports

Then the Suns brought in Isaiah Thomas, like that one backup singer that the label sends in to improve your sound.

All of a sudden, Dragic was seeing a lot less of the ball 40% less, according to ESPNs Tom Haberstroh and his role was shrinking as Bledsoes was expanding. Hes averaged 16.2 points and 4.1 assists in 33.4 minutes this season. This was all following a stellar 2013-14 season that saw the Suns make promises to Dragic that he would be a crucial part of their future. They even signed his brother Zoran to make him more comfortable about staying with the franchise.

Thats not going to happen now.

The break-up

(USA TODAY Sports Images)

Once it became clear that the Suns werent going to be able to re-sign Dragic, they knew they had to deal him. Dragic reportedly has a list of places hed like to go, chief among them the New York Knicks and the Los Angeles Lakers.

However, the Suns are looking for a promising young player and a first-round draft pick for Dragic and neither the Lakers nor the Knicks have either of those things.

The Miami Heat is also reportedly on Dragics list. However, like the Lakers and the Knicks, they dont really have the draft picks or the young talent that the Suns are looking for (theres no way the Heat are giving up Hassan Whiteside now), so nothing quite works for any of the teams Dragic wants to go to without a third team and a lot of finagling involved.

So what happens now?

Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Dragic wants to have an offense flow completely through him, and to do that, he needs to go to a team that doesnt have an established point guard. Those teams without an established point guard and the teams that can actually trade for him dont really overlap.

So the Suns will shop him outside of his preferred list. The Boston Celtics, the Sacramento Kings, and the Houston Rockets seem likely destinations, but well have to wait and see what the Suns organization and Goran Dragic do with what precious little time they have left before the trade deadline.
