Vermont man lost at sea was suspect in grandfather"s killing

Presidential Debate September 26, 2016

The case of a 22-year-old man rescued at sea after clinging to a raft for a week took a dark turn Wednesday as it was revealed he was a suspect in his grandfather"s unsolved murder.

Nathan Carman, the young man rescued in the Atlantic after floating on a life raft for a week, had been a suspect in the 2013 killing of his grandfather, deepening the mystery surrounding his ordeal and the apparent death of his mother at sea, theHartford Courant reported Wednesday.

According to a search warrant for Carman"s apartment obtained by the newspaper, Carman was the last person known to see his maternal grandfather, John Chakalos, alive on Dec. 20, 2013, when he had dinner with him at his home in Windsor. The 87-year-old Chakalos, a real estate developer, was found dead the next morning. He had been shot three times.

The Courant reported Tuesday that Windsor police submitted an arrest warrant for Carman to a prosecutor, but it was returned unsigned with a request for more information. Carman was not charged.

A will shows John Chakalos left an estate worth more than $42 million to his four adult daughters.

Carman and his mother, Linda Carman, 54, of Middletown, Conn., left Rhode Island on a fishing trip on Sept. 17. Nathan Carman was rescued in a life raft off the Massachusetts coast on Sunday. His mother remains missing and is presumed dead.

Carman said outside his Vernon, Vt., home Tuesday that he"s been through "a huge amount" emotionally, and he thanked the public for its concern and prayers.

Coast Guard officials interviewed Carman when he arrived in Boston on Tuesday. In an audio exchange with the Coast Guard from the Chinese freighter that rescued him 100 miles offshore in the Atlantic, Carman described hearing a "funny noise" in his boat"s engine compartment, seeing water pouring in, then losing sight of his mother before he boarded the raft.

"I was bringing one of the safety bags forward. The boat just dropped out from under my feet," Carman says on the recording. "When I saw the life raft, I did not see my mom. Have you found her?"

After the officer tells Carman they have not found his mother, he describes getting to the life raft.

"I was whistling and calling and looking around, and I didn"t see her," he said.

Carman told the Coast Guard his 31-foot aluminum fishing boat sank and he spent seven days in a four-person inflatable life raft. Many questions remain about how the boat sank and what happened to his mother.

Defense attorney Hubert Santos said he"s representing Carman. He said Carman "fully cooperated" with the Coast Guard after he was transported to Boston by the freighter that rescued him.

Santos wouldn"t reveal what Carman told Coast Guard officials when he was questioned at the base.

"It was a tragic accident," Santos said.

The mother and son had left for their fishing trip from Point Judith, Rhode Island. Vermont authorities said police from South Kingstown, R.I., searched Carman"s home in Vernon on Monday. South Kingstown police did not immediately return calls seeking comment.

Carman grew up in Middletown, Conn., but bought a home in Vermont two years ago.

Santos declined to comment on that investigation.

Family members have said Carman has Asperger"s syndrome, a form of autism.

Sharon Hartstein, a close friend of Linda Carman"s, said the mother and son regularly went on fishing trips together.

"That was one of their bonding things," Hartstein said. "When he was available, she tried to make time so she could spend time with him."

Windsor Police Capt. Thomas LePore said Tuesday that the investigation into Chakalos" killing remains open and active. He said police interviewed Chakalos" relatives, including Nathan and Linda Carman, as part of their investigation.

Linda Carman"s mother, Rita Chakalos, died of cancer just weeks before her husband was killed. John and Rita Chakalos were philanthropists who split their time between Connecticut and Chesterfield, N.H., where they had an estate known for its massive holiday lights display.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Game"s Manager Blasts Meek Mill For Beanie Sigel Beatdown: Y"All Violated That Man In Front Of His Wife & Kids ...

Meek Mill"s Crew Allegedly "BEAT UP" Beanie Sigel Over Ghost Writing Allegations
...

West Coast rapper Games manager Wack 100 has bashed Meek Mill. The high-profile manager went at the Philadelphia native for his entourage physically assaulting Beanie Sigel last weekend.

New footage has surfaced of Wack going at Meek and denying a rumor about Sigel giving intel to Games camp.

Yall n*ggas went back there and put yall hands on Beans, my n*gga. On Piru and everything Piru stand for, Beans aint told me sh*t about nothing. Now if you pay attention to where this problem come from, it all goes back to your man Meek. That n*gga Beans been carrying Philly on his back for 20-plus years. Yall violated that man in front of his wife and his kids, my n*gga. That n*gga aint told us nothing, my n*gga. Whoever the f*ck did that needs to be dealt with my n*gga. 100. Its all love.

A clip surfaced this week of Meek affiliate Teefy Bey allegedly knocking out Sigel.

TMZ got this video of Beanie laid out backstage shortly before he was getting onstage Saturday night for Diddys Bad Boy Family concert in Philly. You can also see a guy getting dragged out of the area his name is Teefy Bey, and hes a member of Meeks Dreamchasers. (TMZ)

This week, Teefy confirmed physically attacking Sigel for showing disloyalty to Mill by associating with Game.

Os sh*t was already done. Then Mack came in, was trying to help Omelly out not with no f*cking lyric writing putting emphasis on saying your verse, like, Say this stronger. Sh*t like that. He never wrote nothing for nobody. Everybody was in there just feeding off each other going at the Game because hes a sucker. Do I know anything about it? Yeah I know about it. I think he passed out from his diabetic medication. Sike nah, look, everybody knows what it is but yall see how I just explained all that history? How we pray and bump and n*ggas got respect for him and how we let him come to the studio to jump on the joint and all that. And then he backdoored n*ggas with Game and them, telling n*ggas information that only the camp know. And not the information that you wrote something, because you didnt. The information was more worse than that, for the people. And then some other sh*t came into play that I dont wanna talk about. (HHS1987)

Footage also surfaced of Beans lending a hand to Dreamchasers Omelly on the anti-Game Ooouuu diss song.

Is a collaborative recording effort fair game for Meek Mill, who once used reference tracks and allegations of ghostwriting to go at Drake? While Beanie Sigel had said previously that he helped out with some lines for the Game diss over Young M.As OOOUUU, footage has now surfaced of the recording session with Beanie, Meek and Omelly in the lab. Beloved Dartmouth prof faces prison for "extensive" child p**n collection

Amber Alert issued for two Indiana teens

CONCORD, N.H. A Dartmouth College professor whom one colleague described as a beloved presence on campus could spend years in prison after being caught with an extensive collection of child p*********y some of which he shared on the social media site Tumblr.

J. Martin Favor, on paid leave since his September arrest, pleaded guilty in March and resigned earlier this month. He will be sentenced Monday and could receive up to 10 years in prison, though a prosecutor recommended 6 years; his attorney requested three years. He faces being a registered s*x offender for life.

Favour"s lawyer, George Ostler, said it"s certain the Ivy League English professor"s two-decade career is over. But he says Favor recognizes he suffers from an addiction and has committed himself to mental health treatment.

"Through the years, Mr. Favor played an active and a robust role in the academic community and was widely respected, not only at Dartmouth, but throughout the country," Ostler said in a court document.

Favor, 49, was arrested last year at his Plainfield home after authorities said he uploaded four suspected images of child p**n through his account on Tumblr, a cross between a social networking site and a blog. Authorities say the images were uploaded to an account associated with his IP address and were traced back to him.

Tumblr has a process to detect whether a known file of child p*********y is being stored on an account. It made a report to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, which, in turn, provided a cyber tip line report to the New Hampshire Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

The case partly relied on technology called PhotoDNA refined by a Dartmouth computer science professor, Hany Farid. It identifies a signature in an image that can then be matched with one in a vast database of child p*********y.

"On the one hand, this is exactly what this technology was built to do," Farid said. "On the other hand, this is a colleague of mine and you know he is in for a world of hurt. I"m not particularly pleased that I"m part of that. It"s a complicated situation, of course."

Favour began teaching at Dartmouth in 1993 and was granted tenure six years later. He was an associate professor of English and former chairman of the African and African-American Studies program. Among his books are "Authentic Blackness: The Folk in the New Negro Renaissance." Ostler said he was a mentor to many students.

A college spokeswoman and the school"s alumni association declined to comment or respond. Melissa Zeiger, an associate professor of English, said in an email that since he came to Dartmouth, Favor has been "an extremely popular and successful teacher, although renowned for intellectual rigour as a grader."

She added, "Students have often mentioned to me how much he has improved their critical thinking, how willing he was to work with them in class and in conference to help them become good writers: the review "hard but worth it" I have heard on more than one occasion. He has done this with quiet, but impressive selflessness."

After getting the national centre"s report, investigators searched Favor"s home computer and flash drive. Prosecutors said they contained more than 500 videos and 300 still images depicting children, some as young as toddlers, being sexually abused.

In his sentencing recommendation, Assistant U.S. Attorney Nick Abramson said Favor, by his own admission, had been collecting child p*********y for 15 years, "at least in part to satisfy the unnatural "urges" upon which he swears he has not tangibly acted; urges from which he was able to abstain by avoiding regular interaction with young children."

Abramson wrote that Favor"s "prolonged evasion of accountability for this criminal conduct was ultimately undone by his decision to distribute illicit images" through his Tumblr account.

Favour declined an interview through Ostler.

Ostler wrote that although it"s not disputed that Favor had a large number of images, "these were downloaded from the publicly accessible internet without use of any encryption or through any so-called dark websites. Mr. Favor did not organize, catalogue or make all those images or videos available through any filing-sharing online community." He said Favor viewed them privately.

Ostler said Favor sought treatment soon after his arrest.

Amber Alert: Indiana mom faces murder counts after kids found dead in car

Amber Alert issued for two Indiana teens

ELKHART, Ind. - A mother has been arrested on two counts of murder after her son and daughter were found dead in a vehicle in northern Indiana, police said.

Elkhart police said Monday evening that they believe the children found dead that afternoon are siblings Liliana Hernandez, 7, and Rene Pasztor, 6. Police had issued an Amber Alert for the children earlier Monday, saying they were "believed to be in extreme danger."

Police released no details about how the children died. Autopsies are scheduled Tuesday morning in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Elkhart police said the children"s mother, 29-year-old Amber Pasztor, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, was arrested Monday on two counts of murder. She was being held in the Elkhart County jail.

The mother does not have legal custody of the children, police said. The Allen County Sheriff"s Department in Fort Wayne, Indiana, said the children were taken from Fort Wayne. Police declined to say who the children were living with when they were abducted or why they were taken.

The Associated Press left phone and email messages with the Elkhart County prosecutor"s office seeking comment early Tuesday.

Elkhart police Sgt. Chris Snyder told The Elkhart Truth that the mother co-operated with officers as she was handcuffed and didn"t appear to be suffering from any physical injuries.

"She wasn"t resistant at all," Snyder said. "She actually approached the officer and stopped and made contact with him."

Elkhart is about 120 miles east of Chicago and 70 miles northwest of Fort Wayne.

Steve Jobs was the son of a "Skittle" or why Trump is wrong about refugees

Steve Jobs" 2005 Stanford Commencement Address

Steve Jobs was the son of a Skittle.

By which, in the parlance of Donald Trumps campaign, I mean that the father of the founder of Apple was a Syrian migrant.

Stay with me here. After bombings in New York and New Jersey and a stabbing in a Minnesota mall, the Republican nominees eldest son this week tweeted an image of a bowl of colorful candy with this message: If I had a bowl of Skittles and told you just three would kill you, would you take a handful? Thats our Syrian refugee problem. The message was hailed by supporters and condemned by critics, who shared images of bloodied and lifeless children, a reminder of hundreds of thousands of innocent Syrians killed and millions displaced by civil war. The photographer of the Skittles image objected to its use without his permission and wait for it revealed he was a child refugee when his family fled Turkeys invasion of Cyprus.

The coup de grce came from a Skittles spokeswoman whose simple logic spoke eloquent volumes: Skittles are candy. Refugees are people. We dont feel its an appropriate analogy. Trumps campaign retorted that Americans would rather be safe than politically correct.

Its understandable that we worry about opening our doors to refugees after last weekends attacks. Authorities arrested an Afghan-American for planting bombs and shot to death a Somali-American during the mall rampage and said both may have been inspired by Islamic extremism. Dozens were injured; mercifully, no one died.

Trump has shrewdly tapped into visceral fears of the other for political gain, demonizing Mexicans as job stealers, rapists, and killers, and Muslim refugees as terrorist plotters. He called for banning Muslims from entering the country, until authorities can figure out the problem, and stopping immigration from any nation compromised by terrorism (a definition that includes the United States, United Kingdom, and France). Last month in Arizona, Trump doubled down on building a wall separating Mexico and invited mothers of people killed by undocumented migrants onto his stage.

His scare tactics work because the stories he tells are scary.

And yet. Not to diminish the suffering of any victims or their families, but Trumps hideous caricature of doomsday danger posed by refugees and migrants bears no semblance to reality.

Study after study show that immigrants from any country, whether legal or illegal, are less likely to commit crimes and be imprisoned than native-born Americans. A 2015 report by the Immigration Policy Centerfound that while illegal immigration in the United States tripled between 1990 and 2013, violent crime dropped by half.

The reality of refugees, who undergo two years of security checks before even entering the United States, may surprise you even more. A November 2015 report from the Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank funded by the conservative Koch brothers, found that of 859,629 refugees who had entered the United States since 2001, only three were convicted of planning a terror attack abroad, and none perpetrated a domestic attack. Compare that with one in every 22,541 Americans who committed murder in 2014.

In a new report last week, Cato found that while foreign-born terrorists were responsible for most of the 3,432 terror deaths in the US from 1975 through 2015 (most of which happened on Sept. 11, 2001), the chance of an American being killed by a refugee in a terror attack is a scant 1 in 3.64 billion per year. The chance of being murdered by an illegal immigrant is an infinitesimal 1 in 10.9 billion per year. Thats one enormous bowl of Skittles.

Remember this next time Trump hypes the threat: Albert Einstein, the Dalai Lama, and Jesus were all refugees. Not bad for a trio of Skittles.
