Future Women"s History Month: Emmy Rossum"s Forward-Thinking Feminism

Emmy Rossum Interview: "Shameless" Nude Scenes

Fuse iscelebrating Women"s History Month by looking at a variety of rising forces who are creating Future Women"s History before our eyes. While we"ve known Emmy Rossum for years as an actress and singer, it feels like we"re finally truly seeing the born-and-raised New Yorker"s true power.

Last October, Rossum made her directorial debut during Season 7 of her hit Showtime series Shameless, adding a director title in the series that has consistently earned her unanimous praise. Not only was it a major move for the 30-year-old, but for the show it self as the episode "I Am a Storm" introducesShameless"first transgender character as a potential love interest in the show"s majorly effed-up world. Rossum not only pulled off her directorial debut, but did so in an important episode where she starred in many scenes.

But while Emmy"s legacy may have seemingly been solidified by her onscreen on Shameless, she also made an important change behind the scenes. In December, news surfaced that Rossum was locked in a contract dispute with show producers over her salary. While she argued it was wrong to be paid lower than male co-star William H. Macy for the past seven seasons, instead of simply wanting equal pay, she wanted them to make up for the unequal salaries in the first place and a higher salary to make up for the previous disparities. With a role that"s proven just as vital as Macy"s, here is a woman not only asking for equality but demanding the past inequality be fixed.

it"s clear rossum is thinking and standing up for women in a way that is multidimensional and forward thinking. It"s not enough to have equality among the sexes, but to also to right any wrongs while doing so. That vision that is not only necessary for women"s history, but for healing and dealing with other injustices and inequalities we see in the world.
