Kurt Cobain Would"ve Turned 49 Today: Where Would He Be Now?

Photo: Martyn Goodacre

Any time a great artist dies young and unexpectedly, as fans we often spend our own remaining years wondering what wouldve been, had they just stayed with us longer. Previous generations mourned rockers like Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and John Lennon, while those who grew up in the 80s and 90s had our own fallen heroes from metal gods like Ozzy Osbourne virtuoso Randy Rhoads and Metallicas Cliff Burton to SublimesBradley Nowell, Blind MelonsShannon Hoon and of course, Kurt Cobain. The Nirvana frontman and grunge icon wouldve turned 49 today had he not allegedly committed suicide in 1994, and his legacy continues to burn brightly more than two decadesafter his passing.

But, if Cobain were still alive today, where would he be now? Its an interesting question. Perhaps even more so than the others from Cobains era whove since shaken the mortal coil, Cobain would probably be crafting something very different now. As someone who helped (accidentally or otherwise) create an entire genre and cultural shift, Cobain invented the rules; he was never defined or confined by them.

He certainly wouldnt still be playing grunge, thats for sure. Nirvanas groundbreaking 1994 live album MTV Unplugged in New York showed the world that Cobain was capable of a lot more than just screaming and smashing his guitar; the overall folk-country vibe of the album and the bands unforgettable re-workings of pre-existing material like David Bowies The Man Who Sold The World and the folk traditional Where Did You Sleep Last Night (aka In The Pines) pushed the boundaries of expectation for the band. It turned out that the more we could actually hear Cobain sing, the better his voice sounded.

In an interview originally intended for French television, Cobain said, It might be nice to start playing acoustic guitar and be thought of as a singer and a songwriter, rather than a grunge rocker. I could sit down on a chair and play acoustic guitar like Johnny Cash or something, and it wont be a big joke. Unplugged went a long way toward planting that seed in the publics mind, but Cobain was already dead by the time of its release in November 1994. It likely wouldve only been the beginning of Kurts exploration of a wider range of tones.

Theres also the question of whether or not he wouldve stayed in Nirvana or moved on. In addition to stating his desire to eventually create music as a solo artist, at one point, Cobain also discussed joining Holethe band fronted by his wife, Courtney Love. Rumors have always abounded that he actually penned much of the material on Holes 1994 breakthrough,Live Through This, so we can only guess if that collaboration wouldve ever become official. Its doubtful though, considering the reports that the couple were close to divorcing at the time of his death. Still, its not hard to imagine Kurt working with multiple artists outside of just Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic.

R.E.M.s Michael Stipe has said that he and Kurt talkedabout working together during the weeks before his death, and this is just one example of a union that couldve changed music as we know it today. Everything that came later in the 90s especially the rise of pop-punk and emo couldve been even more heavily informed by Cobains influence than they already are. Can you imagine Cobain guest-starring on Weezers Pinkerton? That wouldve been a pairing for the ages.

And there was also Kurts talent for art particularly drawing which hed enjoyed since his school days. Nirvana album artwork provides an indelible glimpse of his talents outside of just music, with multiple paintings, collages and sculptures showcasing his love for macabre imagery and his fascination with anatomical detail. The posthumous release of his Journalsin 2003further underscored just how gifted a visual artist he was, so he probably would have pursued this passion even more actively had he lived to a point where time and money allowed it. It was a huge part of who he was.

In all likelihood, Nirvana wouldnt have survived forever, even if Kurt had lived, and thats one of the things that made the band legendary: There was always a sense of danger and volatility surrounding the group, like a fire raging out of control. The pressures that were mounting on Cobain at the time of his death, paired with his disillusionment over the music business and the misinterpreting of his artistic vision, would have likely forced the band to take at least a hiatus, if not a permanent split. Then at some point, when enough time had passed, perhaps they wouldve reunited but undoubtedly for love, not nostalgia or money. If that had happened, it wouldve been a very different Kurt Cobain singing those songs, but wed like to think he wouldve done it for the fans, and wouldve found a way to keep the past material vibrant and refreshing.

His legacy as a parent would be much different, too. Maybe he wouldve channeled his energy into being a loving dad to his daughter, Frances Bean, after the inevitable split with Courtney. Its hard to imagine Courtney being granted custody in that situation, so Frances wouldve likely stayed with her dad and actually gotten to know him and his music firsthand. And maybe as a result, Frances wouldnt have grown up to be the anti-celebrity she has become. A lifetime of having Courtney Love as your sole parent is something we wouldnt wish on anyone.

And of course, theres also the chance that Cobain wouldve retreated from public life entirely, spending his days as a recluse in Seattle. Who couldve blamed him? He defined a generation and rewrote the rule book for popular music by essentially disregarding convention and breaking all the rules, only to watch his art bastardized by bean counters and an endless sea of wannabes. No one wouldve been shocked if hed said f it all and disappeared. It might have even saved his life.

Another speedy sellout for Comic-Con badges

Amazing Cosplay - Comic Con Russia 2015

Comic-Con"s annual online ticket sale Saturday morning brought cheers and groans from its biggest fans as badges for the four-day event sold out in record time, just under an hour.

"Comic-Con 2016 badges have sold out! We thank all of your for your patronage and support!" was the message hopeful purchasers saw online as they awaited news of whether they had been selected to buy a badge.

Badges for each of the four days, plus a preview night, are doled out randomly via an online waiting room, but every year demand far exceeds the number of tickets available for purchase, which leads to much dismay and sometimes anger for those who found themselves shut out. It is unlikely there will be another opportunity to purchase tickets.

The most popular days -- preview night and Friday and Saturday -- were gone within 40 minutes.

While the annual pop culture extravaganza long ago outgrew the San Diego Convention Center, organizers have made do by using meeting space in large convention hotels and spreading out onto downtown parking lots and on occasion Petco Park for special events. Each year, Comic-Con draws more than 130,000 attendees, as well as top Hollywood celebrities, movie and television directors, and authors.

Daily tickets for Thursday, Friday and Saturday sold for $55, and Sunday badges were priced at $40. Last year badges sold out in an hour.

Comic-Con this year will be held July 21-24, with preview night on July 20. Organizers of the convention have committed to staying in San Diego through 2018.

Harper Lee buried after special eulogy requested by "Mockingbird" author

Little Green Cars - Harper Lee

MONROEVILLE, Ala. On a day when mockingbirds sang outside the courthouse that inspired her classic American novel, author Harper Lee was laid to rest Saturday in a private ceremony, a reflection of how she had lived.

A few dozen people who comprised Lee"s intimate circle gathered at a church in the small Alabama town of Monroeville, which the author used as a model for the imaginary town of Maycomb, the setting of her Pulitzer Prize-winning novel "To Kill a Mockingbird." Lee died Friday at age 89.

Lee"s longtime friend, history professor Wayne Flynt, eulogized her in a ceremony at First United Methodist Church. Afterward, her casket was taken by silver hearse to an adjacent cemetery where her parents, A.C. Lee and Frances Finch Lee, and sister, Alice Lee, are buried. A spray of red and white roses covered the family headstone at the cemetery

Flynt said he delivered a eulogy that Lee specifically requested years ago. Entitled "Atticus Inside Ourselves," it was a tribute Flynt gave in 2006 when she won the Birmingham Pledge Foundation Award for racial justice. Flynt said Lee liked the speech so much that she wanted him to give it as her eulogy.

"I want you to say exactly that," Flynt quoted Lee as saying at the time. "Not one thing more, and not one thing less."

"If I deviated one degree, I would hear this great booming voice from heaven, and it wouldn"t be G*d," Flynt said in an earlier interview.

Details of the service were fiercely guarded. The author, who for decades had declined media interviews, had wanted a quick and quiet funeral without pomp or fanfare, family members said.

"We obeyed her wishes," said Jackie Stovall, Lee"s second cousin.

The town was appropriately somber a day after their native daughter"s death. Black bows adorned the doors of the old courthouse in Monroeville where Lee as a child, like her literary creation Scout Finch, would peer down from the balcony as her lawyer father tried his cases in the courtroom.

Mockingbirds chirped and frolicked among blooming camellia bushes outside the courthouse on a warm Alabama morning that teased the early arrival of spring.

Jared Anton, of Hollywood, Florida, sat outside the old courthouse during part of a planned vacation through the South that coincided with Lee"s death.

Anton said reading the book in which attorney Atticus Finch defends a wrongly accused African-American man was one of the reasons he decided to become a lawyer.

"It had an impact on me when I was younger. I wanted to do the right thing, to stand up to people, to defend the innocent, if you will," Anton said. "It is the greatest American novel. Name one that really has had more of an impact on Americans than that book."

Handwritten rejection letter from Harper Lee speaks volumes

The Southern town was home to childhood friends Truman Capote and Lee, giving rise to its self-given nickname of the literary capital of the South. Ann Mote, owner of the Ol" Curiosities & Book Shoppe in Monroeville, said she thinks the town will always be linked to Lee.

"She"s a part of it and always will be," Mote said.

Tributes to Lee"s novel dot the town. The courthouse is a museum that pays homage to her creation. There"s the Mockingbird Inn on the edge of town and a statute of children reading "Mockingbird" in the courthouse square. Tickets go on sale in a week for the city"s annual "To Kill A Mockingbird" play, Mote said. A black mourning bow donned the top of the sign at the bookstore, where a stack of hardcopy "Mockingbird" books sat the counter along with a DVD of the movie.

The town this summer had a celebration for the release of "Go Set a Watchman" Lee"s initial draft of the story that would become "Mockingbird" even though many residents had ambivalent feelings about its release.

"She was an Alabama treasure. She was an international treasure. We were all blessed by her life and her work as we are diminished by her passing," said Cathy Randall, a friend of Lee"s for the past 30 years.

Flynt and Randall said they had recently visited Lee at the Monroeville assisted living facility where she had lived for several years because of declining health. Flynt said Lee was "savagely witty."

"She was still the most brilliant person in any room," Randall said.

Civil rights activist Dolores Huerta claims Bernie Sanders supporters chanted "English-only" at Nevada caucus

Nevada Democratic Caucus Aftermath | Does Party Unity Matter?

Latina civil rights activist Dolores Huerta claims Bernie Sanders supporters chanted English-only when she offered to translate at a Nevada caucus site.

Huerta said the chant took place inside the Las Vegas Hotel and Casino, although video of the alleged moment does not corroborate her statement repeated by Ugly Betty actress America Ferrera.

Both Ferrera and Huerta have endorsed Hillary Clinton, who won Nevada with 52% of the vote against Sanders.

I offered to translate & Bernie supporters chanted English only, Huerta tweeted Saturday. We fought too long & hard to be silenced.

The video shows no sign of supporters shouting English-only," but a woman repeatedly shouting neutral is audible. The one-word cry is an apparent request for an impartial translator other than Huerta, who has stumped for Clinton.

Its unclear if Huerta, a National Farm Workers Association co-founder, misunderstood the events that unfolded inside the Sin City casino auditorium when the caucus moderator asked for a translator. The event was attended by numerous Spanish-speaking voters

Huerta later shamed Sanders on Twitter for depriving Spanish-speaking voters of information needed to participate in Saturdays vote.

A Sanders supporter offered to translate as well, Huerta later told CNN, but caucus organizers ultimately went without translators to avoid favoring either of the Democratic candidates.

Voters were asked to pick their candidate by standing on either side of the theater.

The event was also attended by Sanders supporters, actresses Susan Sarandon and Gaby Hoffman, both of whom disputed Huertas claim a day after she published a critical blog post on Sanders voting record on immigration policies.

Misinformation like this is very dangerous and divisive, Hoffmann tweeted.

Ted Cruz and Ben Carson Held a Secret Meeting Inside a Closet

Ben Carson Is Against Free College But For Free Gun Classes

Ted Cruz and Ben Carson, two adult males who are running for president of the United States of America, havent been getting along very well lately. Carson has, of late, been accusing Cruz of dirty tricks on the campaign trail, including, but not limited to, telling supporters that Carson had dropped out of the race when he hadnt. Cruz, for his part, has blamed the misunderstanding on CNN, who reported that Carson had returned to Florida during the Iowa caucus to pick up some fresh clothes, an act that Cruz claims led him to believe Carson was, in fact, returning to the Sunshine State to announce his removal from the race rather than to briefly weep into his pile of clean laundry. Carson replied by suggesting that Cruz fire his campaign staffers. Cruz has not done this.

Likely recognizing that this ongoing and patently insane argument would likely alienate voters on both sides, Cruz and Carson did what grown men do when faced with conflict: they held a secret meeting inside of a closet.

The Daily Beast reports that on Thursday night in South Carolina, ahead of the Conservative Review convention, Cruz and Carson huddled inside a storage closet so that they might work out their issues. The arch nemeses selected the storage closet because it was neutral ground, as are all storage closets, where conventional laws do not apply. The meeting lasted for nearly 25 minutes, with a Secret Service detail standing outside, at one point informing a Republican operative, Yeah, theyre in that closet.

The meeting did not go well, Carson communication strategist Jason Osborne told The Daily Beast.

Not only did the closet convention end with Carson concluding that the two would have to agree to disagreethe familiar death knell of once-happy couples across Americabut it bumped into Carsons speaking time at the convention, meaning that somehow, Cruz managed to completely screw Carson over yet again, this time under the guise of reconciliation. Moreover, Carson agreed to meet with Cruz only for five minutes, and only if their tiny ttette were to remain off the record. Which it clearly hasnt.

And why, pray tell, is this Meeting of the Midnight Society now public knowledge? Because Ted Cruz, Carsons campaign alleges, immediately told the media about the secret meeting in an ill-conceived attempt to look like a good guy. We werent going to comment to the press on it, but it seems pretty clear that the other party involved had a different agenda, Osborne said. How else could we perceive that to be?

Later that evening, after Carson spoke at the convention, he ran into Cruz again in the hallway and, in a bizarre twist, Cruz didnt even look at Carson, according to the latters campaign. There was a political play there and it didnt work for them, a Republican operative close to the campaign told The Daily Beast. The meeting didnt go as well as Cruz wanted it to go. Carson had a smile on his face and was looking right at him.

But Ted Cruz would forever denounce Plants vs. Zombies before he admitted to the media that the meeting was anything less than a raging success. When asked how the meeting went, Rick Tyler, a spokesman for Cruzs campaign, told The Daily Beast, Yes, they had a good visit.

Miss Mulatto and 21 Savage perform "Red Opps"

Miss Mulatto is officially a So So Def Recordings signee. On Friday night (Feb. 19), the 16-year-old Atlanta MC wascrowned theseason 1 winner ofLifetime"sThe Rap Game(a competition for young rhymers on the ATL hip-hop scene)executive produced by JermaineDupri and Queen Latifah.

She also offered this sportsmanlike salute to her castmates: "Big shouts to all the other kids on the show. Everybody won technically."

"The Rap Game" Cast Rocks the Mic in "Cool With Me" Video

How does it feel winning The Rap Game?

Its crazy! Im super excited to get everything rolling.

What was the biggest challenge?

The biggest challenge was definitely the cypher. We had to do a cypher and it was really intense, cause Im not really aggressive and JD has been working on that with me throughout the whole process -- just being more aggressive, having the rapper attitude.Battle rap was kinda out of my element so I had to work on it, but it was super cool and definitely the most challenging.

Jermaine Dupri Talks New Show "The Rap Game" & Wanting to Create a "Children"s Version" of Coachella

Which competitor made you the most nervous during the season finale?

I would say Niqois the most similar to me with his training and ability to write.Niqo was definitely my biggest competitor.

What has working with Jermaine Dupri taught you?

Jermaine has a crazy work ethic, lets just put that out there. I havent met anyone who works harder than Jermaine. He always instilledhumility in us. He always said, "No matter how big you feel like you are [or]you feel like youve made it already, you still have to work like youre losing." That was probably the most important lesson I learned throughout the whole process.

Lifetime has renewedThe Rap Game for a second season.

The Inexhaustible Warrior Power Of Kesha

Kesha Cries in Court - After Realizing Selling Her Soul to Satan was Wrong Choice
by Sasha Geffen 21h ago

Its hard to listen to Kesha without feeling powerful. We were born to break the doors down, fighting till the end, she sings on her 2012 song Warrior. Its something thats inside of us. Its how weve always been. Her music broadcasts an uncompromising femininity, a glittering, bleeding pose of raw messiness that forgives us for our excesses as well as our inadequacies. It is so generous with its energy.

Before the details of her alleged ongoing trauma ever made their way into a court document, Kesha made music that turned what others might call victimhood into power. Instead of being a victim, Im always gonna be a warrior, she said on Spotifys Warrior commentary. No matter what anybody throws at me, or what kind of s**t I go through.

Warrior begins the last studio album Kesha released before she dropped the dollar sign from her name and revealed the h**l where her career was forged, locking it into a standstill in the process. Something clicked and she decided not to be silent, even if the cost of her speaking was a different kind of stifling.

Embedded from www.youtube.com.Kesha is not a pop star who just happened to suffer abuse. Like many young women in the music industry, she found her way to fame by way of a man whom she now alleges drugged, raped, and emotionally tortured her. The career she now fights to continue originated in a nightmare. She is not the first.

The machinations of fame and wealth and power lend themselves readily to abuse, but they also comprise the vehicle that can radiate songs to as many listeners as Keshas have reached. That she waited nearly a decade to publish her allegations only points to the predicament in which most survivors find themselves: Abuse makes you who you are, but you can still be that person without suffering it interminably.

More than any other pop singer, Kesha has made joyful battle cries for the f****d-up and the beaten-down. Shes an unabashed mess, honest about her pain but never seeking pity for it, always finding the edge where she can lift herself up from her hells. We aint perfect but thats alright, she sings. Love us or hate us, nothing can break us / Better believe us: times, they are a-changing tonight.
