Central Intelligence: A Fun Action Comedy You"ll Instantly Forget

"Central Intelligence" - Lie Detector Test

The advertising campaign for Central Intelligence, an uber-formulaic spy comedy starring the beefy Dwayne Johnson and the pint-sized comedy star Kevin Hart, states that saving the world takes a little Hart and a big Johnson. When a movie has a tagline as outrageously snappy as that, its hard not to speculate that the studio started with that pun and commissioned a script around it. Unfortunately, the gag may be the cleverest thing about the entire film.

Related Story

Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising Is a Surprisingly Self-Aware Sequel

That alone shouldnt write Central Intelligence off completely: After all, this isnt a film thats really shooting for clever. The groan-inducing nature of the tagline underscores the larger point of the films existence: Its an excuse to get Johnson and Hart, two charming superstar actors, together for two hours so that they can be delightfully silly on-screen. The plot is largely irrelevant, the action mostly perfunctory, but if youre a fan of either Hart or Johnsons usual movie shtick, Central Intelligence is just about fun enough to recommend.

The film is directed and co-written by Rawson Marshall Thurber, a Hollywood oddity who seems to thrive more in silly territory than serious. His biggest hits have been Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story and Were the Millers, antic, instantly forgettable comedies; his more serious effortslike an adaptation of Michael Chabons novel The Mysteries of Pittsburghfell disappointingly flat. For Central Intelligence, Thurber is back in comedy modethis is the kind of film to enjoy in a hotel room when theres nothing else on cable.

Its highlights include Johnson, whos a bona-fide movie star who rarely seems to find projects that match his magnetic screen presence. Perhaps its his next-level beefiness, which usually slots him into a specific role as the stone-faced straight man in a comedy. Central Intelligence is wise enough to undo that stereotype, having Johnson play Robert Weirdicht (yes, its pronounced Weird d**k), a high-school dweeb who looked up to star athlete Calvin Joyner (Hart) in his youth and became a hard-bodied CIA action hero in an effort to emulate his popularity. Hart, meanwhile, peaked in his teens and has become a pencil-pushing nobody, though equipped with the manic energy Hart brings to all of his performances.

In flashbacks, CGI trickery turns Johnson into an overweight, awkward fool of a teenager, singing with abandon in the gym showers and getting publicly bullied in an early sequence that pushes both good taste and visual credibility (computer-generated teen Robert looks downright bizarre, though not as strange as Johnsons turn as The Scorpion King). But the film pulls it off by staying resolutely on Roberts side and carrying his goofy personality over to adulthood, where he gets to inhabit Johnsons chiseled form. Robert still loves unicorns, singing En Vogue, and sharing dated memes (he reconnects with Calvin on Facebook by sending him a link to the Budweiser Wassup commercial). But hes also an international superspy.

The problem with this is that it forces Hart into the straight-man role, which feels like a waste of his live-wire talents. A dull accountant who bemoans the loss of his glory days, Calvin spends most of the film reacting to Roberts martial-arts and sharpshooting expertise with delight and horror, while being dragged from one location to the next by a perfectly nonsensical plot. There are double agents, encrypted codes, and a CIA authority figure played by Amy Ryan whose trustworthiness is suspect, but its hard to buy into any of Central Intelligences perfunctory twists. The story here is Robert and Calvins reconnection, and the joke that you can never quite shake who you were in high schoolthe bullets whizzing around are almost beside the point.

Still, Johnson is a gifted enough physical comedian that he sells some of the set-pieces. Part of the joke with Robert is that hes utterly unflappable in the field, dispatching assassins with delighted ease while Calvin contributes jittery yelps alongside him. Early on, confronted with a knife-wielding enemy, Robert picks up his only available weapon to counter witha bananaand the audience is never in doubt as to who will win that showdown. Anytime Robert is in action mode, the stakes are decidedly low.

But when he reunites with his old high-school bully (played in adulthood by a sneering Jason Bateman), he freezes up, and theres just enough pathos to the moment for it to land, partly because the film never fails to celebrate Roberts goofiness. I realized high school was nothing like Sixteen Candles, he confides to Calvin, recalling his experiences with bullying. And Ill never be like Molly Ringwald. Central Intelligence does its best to make Johnson its Molly Ringwaldand its that effort that makes it just memorable enough to recommend.

"Finding Dory": Check Out 10 Easter Eggs From Disney-Pixar"s Newest Film And An Interesting Theory Of Weird Movie ...

Minecraft XBOX Hide And Seek Battle Mode - Finding Dory Part 2

All movies have Easter Eggs in them somewhere in this day and age, and Disney loves to do that with their films as they proved with Zootopia. Pixar has been doing that since theyve been in existence, and theyre not stopping now. Finding Dory just hit theaters on Thursday night, and the hidden and fun things are starting to make their way out. Here are just 10 of the Easter Egg in Pixars newest release and one incredibly odd, but believable, theory about Die Hard.

Please note that there are some spoilers ahead for Finding Dory which could ruin the experience for you. If you havent yet seen the film, then you may want to stop reading now.

The movie itself is really good and Disney-Pixar has a winner on their hands with this sequel, but the hidden secrets are so much fun to find. You may want to wait until your second viewing to locate them all so you dont miss the plot and enjoyment, but here is what to keep your eyes open for.

1.) Make sure to look in the background of The Marine Life Institute, especially in the back offices. Among things youll see in the office is a picture of the headgear-wearing Darla from the first film who loves FISHIES!

[Image via Pixar]2.) There is also a model of Crush the Sea Turtle hanging in the Open Ocean exhibit and a poster featuring the volcanos from the hit Pixar short Lava, according to Pixar Post.

3.) Hank the septopus (hes not an octopus since he only has seven tentacles) is quite possibly the best and longest running Easter Egg in Pixar history. No matter how crucial and big a part of Finding Dory he really is, Hank is a huge hidden joke and secret all on his own.

4.) A113 makes an appearance in every single Pixar film and Finding Dory is no exception. The classroom number at Cal Institute of the Arts where many Pixar animators spent a lot of their time shows up on a truck license plate in the final portion of the film.

Trust me, the truck is a key component for the climax and you cant miss it.

5.) While shown during the trailer, this is one you can see twice during the film. At one point when Dory is looking for her family and in the credits, Herbie the Love Bug does make an awesome appearance.

@DisneyPixar Is it an easter egg for people to find #53 Herbie behind Dory of the recent Finding Dory trailer????? pic.twitter.com/vw81Dshvjz

Matthew Storm (@DegaMatthew) May 28, 2016

6.) There is a reference to the Toy Story aliens which is pretty awesome and it comes later in the film. A group of blue tangs (Dory-fish) who are in a tank together and they all band together to go, Oooooooooo!

7.) One of the boats youll see in the film has the number 1200 on the side of it, and that is a nod to the address of Pixar headquarters which is 1200 Park Avenue in Emeryville, California.

8.) Ultimate Orlando noticed a Disneyland Park Easter Egg in Finding Dory, and it is on a water pipe which reads Seawater Supply TL59. This is the same name on a water pipe at the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage in Anaheim.

9.) Another A113 reference is dropped in Finding Dory, and it comes with two of the best characters in the film. Fluke and Rudder are a couple of awesome sea lions voiced by Idris Elba and Dominic West respectively, and make sure to check out their tags.

Yes, Rudders tag reads A1 and Flukes tag reads 13.

[Image via Pixar]10.) Now, this is a fan theory that is one of the strangest and weirdest in cinematic history as it actually connects Die Hard to the film. As Pixar theories have gone in the past, fans have been led to believe that Woody, Sully, Wall-E, Dory, Nemo, Flik, and all the characters exist in the same universe but does John McClane also exist in the same space?

According to Collider, Finding Dory director Andrew Stanton and producer Lindsey Collins even joked about that possibility so they wanted to make it a reality.

Theres a lot of theories online that all of the universes are connected, so somebody made a spoof of how we put Die Hard in all of our movies, and it was very funny, we thought it was tongue in cheek. So we said, Alright, lets do it, so we made two Die Hard references in this movie.

So yes, somewhere in Finding Dory are two Die Hard references which make that universe so much more expansive and awesome.

Finding Dory is already breaking after opening with $9.2 million on its first night and that is the largest Thursday night opening ever for an animated film. It actually shattered the previous record of $4 million by Toy Story 3 years ago. Now, these Easter Eggs and other hidden things could end up bringing in repeat viewers or even those who werent planning on going. It could also bring in a Die Hard fan or two who is trying to see how weird that theory really is.

Colombia vs. Peru

Entrevista James Rodriguez Colombia vs Peru - Cuartos de Final - Copa America

Croatias Euro 2016 campaign, cruising toward a victory against the Czech Republic on Friday, seemed to go off the rails after it surrendered two late goals against the run of play to tie, 2-2.

The tie was a disappointment, as Croatia dominated an opponent for the second game in a row, but Croatia now faces a larger problem: UEFA has opened a disciplinary case after Croatian fans threw about a dozen flares onto the field in the final minutes, and some fans fought with one another in the stands.

The incident caused a delay of several minutes near the end of a game that Croatia appeared to be closing out comfortably, and in addition to the flares and the fighting included the tossing of a firecracker-like explosive onto the playing surface. It went off with a loud bang just as a stadium steward reached down to pick it up.

The result, and the disturbances, infuriated the Croatian team. Players pleaded with their fans for calm before the smoke, and the explosive, chased them away.

These people are sports terrorists, they are not fans, fumed Croatias coach, Ante Cacic.

They dont deserve to sit in stands, he added. They ruin everything we are doing.

Via The Associated Press:

Croatias fans have one of the worst records in Europe for misbehavior in stadiums. Four years ago, the former UEFA President Michel Platini singled out Croatia fans for criticism. Croatia was later deducted one point in its Euro 2016 qualifying group after fans painted a swastika symbol on the field before a match against Italy in Split.

Croatia is potentially facing a big fine from UEFA over the delay. The governing body said after the match that it will open disciplinary procedures against Croatia following the incidents.

It also cost itself control of the group by blowing a two-goal lead. Instead of six points, and a place in the next round, Croatia left Saint-Etienne with four points, and some serious questions to answer.

UPDATE: ESPNs Gabrielle Marcotti reported after the match that the disruption was almost certainly related to an ongoing power struggle for control of the Croatian soccer association, which may explain Cacics comments that its a group of maybe six, seven or 10 individuals; I hope we can identify them and that they will be punished.

There is a portion of Croatia fans that want Croatia eliminated, Marcotti said. They want the Croatan F.A. further embarrassed.

This is their way of embarrassing them, he added. Its happened before, and they say theyre going to continue to do it.

Matt and Melissa Graves appealed for privacy and they prepared for the funeral of their two-year-old, who died Tuesday at Disney"s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa southwest of Orlando.

"We understand the public"s interest, but as we move forward this weekend, we ask for and appreciate the privacy we need to lay our son to rest. Neither Melissa, myself or anyone from our family will be speaking publicly; we simply cannot at this time."

It came a day after Disney began adding signs and temporary barriers at the resort warning about alligators.

Signs at the beach where the child was attacked said no swimming was allowed butdid not warn against the dangers posed by alligators. Lane"s family was visiting from Nebraska, and Disney has faced questions over whether it warned out-of-towners about the dangers posed by alligators.

In an earlier statement, the Lane family expressed their "deepest gratitude" to authorities.
