Fresh wrinkles lead to win, but TCU football still seeking answers

TCU Football || "Battle On The Ice"

If nothing else, TCU football coach Gary Patterson proved to be a man of his word Saturday. Patterson promised he would have a couple of surprises in store for Iowa State in his teams Big 12 conference opener at Amon G. Carter Stadium but did not elaborate during his weekly news conference.

Instead, he trotted out one of his team leaders, receiver Deante Gray, as a starting cornerback in place of Ranthony Texada. He had last weeks leading tackler, linebacker Sammy Douglas, yield his starting spot to Travin Howard before getting into the flow for something other than special teams duty late in the second quarter.

Perhaps the most welcomed fresh wrinkle: quarterback Kenny Hill did not punctuate his second-quarter touchdown run in Saturdays 41-20 victory with an end-zone celebration that could be viewed as an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Instead, Hill tapped a few teammates helmets after putting the Horned Frogs ahead 17-7 with 7:22 remaining in the first half.

Just be smart. That was really it. Just be smart and understand the situation. He really has had my back this week, so I appreciate that.

TCU quarterback Kenny Hill, on what coach Gary Patterson told him about TD celebrations after last weeks pivotal penalty against Arkansas

Asked what Patterson told him about celebrating against Iowa State, Hill said: Just be smart. That was really it. Just be smart and understand the situation. He really has had my back this week, so I appreciate that.

In another new move, TCU (2-1, 1-0 Big 12) unleashed a consistent pass rush. The Frogs collected five sacks against the Cyclones (0-3, 0-1) after combining for five in their first two games.

About the only surprise that didnt work Saturday was a second-quarter series involving three consecutive runs for power back Derrick Green, a graduate transfer from Michigan. That three-and-out series resulted in a punt shortly before Green found the end zone for the first time as a Horned Frog in the final minute of the first half.

20 Points allowed by the TCU defense against Iowa State after the unit surrendered 41 in each of the first two games this season.

But most of Pattersons wrinkles worked, though the coach hardly seemed pleased in the wake of a victory that pushed TCU to the top of the Big 12 conference standings for at least one week.

Im not happy about it, but its a win, said Patterson, who watched three key players leave the contest with injuries (receiver and return man KaVontae Turpin, defensive end Josh Carraway, cornerback Jeff Gladney). Too many people got banged up and not enough emotion.

But there were bright spots among the fresh wrinkles. Gray, a fifth-year senior, made two tackles (one for a loss) and broke up a pass in his first appearance at cornerback since the 2013 season. He said he learned Sunday that he would be shifting positions and worked exclusively at cornerback during practice last week, earning the start ahead of Texada, who also finished with two tackles against ISU.

Gray said he considered it a huge deal that coaches asked him to make the move in an effort to stabilize a defense that allowed 41 points in each of its first two games.

Whatever Coach P wants me to do, Im going to do it and be full-speed about it. As a senior, he expects us to set an example for the younger people, Gray said. With me, he sees Im a very selfless player and Im going to do whatever to make the team win.

Although safety Nick Orr credited Gray with being a main reason why the defense played better this week, Gray acknowledged he missed too many tackles and has some things to sharpen up, for sure, if hes going to remain a part of Pattersons defense.

Patterson remained unsure about that, perhaps in response to Turpins injury and its potential impact on the receiving corps.

I dont know if h**l play [defense] next week. h**l probably have to move back to offense, Patterson said, adding that Grays shift of positions Saturday was designed to help TCU get better at corner.

Howard, who received Saturdays start over Douglas, posted seven tackles against ISU. So did Douglas. Fellow linebacker Ty Summers led the way with 16 as the defense held ISU to 355 yards, the lowest total by a TCU opponent this season. But Patterson was not pleased because ISU entered the contest averaging only 299 yards and 11.5 points per game.

Whatever Coach P wants me to do, Im going to do it and be full-speed about it. As a senior, he expects us to set an example for the younger people.

TCU receiver/cornerback Deante Gray

We gave up too many yards. Against that offense, we probably should have played less than 60 plays [on defense], Patterson said, reflecting on ISUs 83 plays (11 more than TCU). We did some good things. We got better than we were last week. Weve got to start acting like were older to be better.

Sounds like more tweaks may be in order for next weeks game against SMU.

SNL: Margot Robbie dings Jared Leto in "fact check" opening monologue

Will Smith & Margot Robbie Insult Each Other | CONTAINS STRONG LANGUAGE!

Margot Robbie kicked off the season 42 premiere of Saturday Night Live by bringing a bit of honesty to election season.

I mean, this is how you guys really do it, the Australian actress said in her opening monologue. Its nuts! I mean everybody just lies. Its crazy. Which is why tonight I am going to be 100 percent honest with you. And just in case I ever do lie, I will be fact-checking my own monologue. But dont worry. I never lie.

Then, she turned to face another camera and added, I lie all the time. My name isnt even Margot Robbie. Its Margot Robert.

Robbie went on to poke fun at her Suicide Squad costar, Jared Leto, the method actor who made headlines during the films production for sending his castmates various unwanted gifts (think used condoms, a**l beads, a live rat, and a dead pig) in character as the Joker.

Jared Leto stayed in character like the whole time, which was so, so fun, Robbie said, before fact-checking herself: Not fun. It was kind of uncomfortable.

See the full monologue below, and check out the season premiere recap here.

The police department says the 40-year-old was ejected and died at the scene. Two women in the car were injured and taken to a hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

The rapper"s manager confirmed the news and Shawty Lo"s Twitter account put out a statement.

TRENDING STORIES:

After initially describing the crash as a hit-and-run, it has been confirmed now that it was a single car accident, Fulton police spokeswoman Cpl. Maureen Smith said.

The rapper formed the hip hop group D4Lwith fellow Atlanta rappers Fabo, Mook-B and Stoney. The group released the popular songs "Betcha Can"t Do It Like Me" and "Laffy Taffy."

He was born in Moultrie, Georgia in 1976.

Channel 2s Audrey Washington met with Shawty Lo"s group D4L and his manager after they spoke on the Ryan Cameron Morning Show with Wanda Smith.

His friend broke down in tears when he explained he invited the rapper to hang out with him Tuesday night.

"I called him and asked him to come out, you know? And he came out and my buddy didn"t go back home, you know? Shawty Los friend said.

Shawty Lo made news in 2013 when the Oxygen network announced plans for a special about his blended family, which includes 11 children with 10 women. After outrage and online petitions, the special entitled All My Babies Mamas was scrapped before it even aired.

No other details about the crash were released.

Artists, neighbors, friends and family mourn loss of Shawty Lo

Artists, neighbors, childhood friends and family have gathered along Donald LeeHollowell with the sound of Shawty Lo"s music blasting through the doors of the ORG studio.

His death has made national news, but there"s only one place where you"ll find people who truly knew Shawty Lo.

"We just stunned right now, D4L co-founder Marcus Smith said. The community is just stunned."

Shawty Lo is memorialized in so many personal ways once you cross into Donald Lee Hollowell.

"And for him to leave today? friend Shawn Robinson asked. I"m crushed. It"s hard. It"s very hard for me. And everybody just left Yung Joc party last night, you understand me?"

On every corner, you"d find people mourning the loss of the 40-year-old who rose to fame in the early 2000s, but never became a stranger to this neighborhood.

"They really looked up to him, especially if you could be one of the ones that make it out, friend Dontavius Dowell said.

"Thanksgiving, Christmas. People needed a lot of things and he came out of his own pocket and gave, Smith said.

Outside the ORG studio off Donald Lee Hollowell, one of Shawty Lo"s 11 children stepped out to speak with us.

"We trying to strong, but we can"t. You know, we can"t bring him back, but he in a better place, though, son Michael Robinson said.

The two unidentified female passenger are being treated at Grady as the cause of the accident remains under investigation.

Tennessee vs. Georgia 2016: Start time, live stream, TV schedule, and 3 things to know

Tennessee vs. Georgia: Pregame at Sanford Stadium

As much as people are talking about the SEC West, there"s still that division called the SEC East that"s still important. The East hasn"t looked pretty, but Saturday"s game between No. 11 Tennessee and No. 25 Georgia is important for whoever meets the West winner in Atlanta for the SEC title game.

Tennessee got its first win over Georgia in five seasons, beating the Dawgs 38-31 in Knoxville in 2015. This year, Tennessee is coming off a thrilling victory over Florida, coming back from a 21-point halftime deficit to beat the Gators, 38-28. Meanwhile, Georgia looks to rebound from a tough road game against Ole Miss -- the Rebels crushed the Dawgs, 45-14, in Oxford last week.

With Tennessee"s win over Florida and Georgia"s 28-27 win over Missouri two weeks ago, these two are still close in the SEC East race. The Vols lead it, followed by a tie between Florida and Georgia, who are both sitting 1-1 in conference play.

How to watch, stream, and listen

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, CBS. Verne Lundquist and Gary Danielson will be on the call, with Allie LaForce on the sideline.

Radio: Tennessee |Georgia

Online streaming: You can catch the game throughCBS Sports.com.

Spread: Tennessee is currently favored by 2.5 points.

Make friends: Get to SB Nations team blog chats for this game atRocky Top Talk for Tennessee fans andDawg Sports for Georgia fans.

Three big things to know

1. The Vols have a win streak at stake: Tennessees thrilling 38-28 comeback win over Florida last week brought the Vols winning streak to 10 games, dating to the 2015 season. This is currently the longest win streak Tennessee has had since the Vols won 14 in a row, in 1998 when they had a 13-0 season. A win over the Dawgs would give the Vols the fifth-longest win streak in program history

2. These two have a habit of coming from behind: The Bulldogs have rallied back from 10-point deficits twice this season -- they were down by 10 points in wins over No. 22 North Carolina in Atlanta and at Missouri, while the Volunteers have done it against Appalachian State, Virginia Tech, and most recently against Florida. However, the comeback against the Gators was after trailing 21-0. It was like the Georgia game last October in Neyland Stadium when the Vols fell behind 24-3, and came back for a 38-31 win.

3. Georgia let a 21-point lead slip away last season: See, Florida, you aren"t the only ones. By halftime, the Vols were able to pull within a touchdown, trailing 24-17. The Volunteers opened the second half with two to take a 31-24 lead, their first of the game. The Dawgs were able to tie things up on a 48-yard TD pass, but then Tennessee went on a 78-yard scoring drive to score the game-winner with 5:48 left to win 38-31.

Eat Bulaga Sugod Bahay Part 1 October 1 2016 #ALDUBHappy1st

Dashcam footage released by police in Sacramento, California, shows two officers attempting to run over a mentally ill homeless man before fatally shooting him 14 times. The encounter with law enforcement that left Joseph Mann dead happened July 11, and the police video was first reported by local news outlets this Thursday. In a captioned version of the video with enhanced audio published by The Sacramento Bee Friday, one of the two officers can be heard saying, "F--k this guy" as they approach the scene in their cruiser. The driving officer then says, "I"m going to hit him," and the other cop replies, "Okay. Go for it. Go for it." The car swerves at Mann, who was African-American, and misses. Moments later, Mann was fatally shot. He was discovered to be armed with only a 4-inch knife. Both officers are now on "modified duty." Mann"s family is suing the city in civil court.

Centaurus freshman Christian Nunez has Warriors playing well

Golden State Warriors vs Toronto Raptors - Highlights | October 1, 2016 | 2016-17 NBA Preseason

LAFAYETTE Over the summer, Centaurus soccer coach Lee Stanley was out of town when his phone started blowing up.

Stanley was getting inundated with voicemails and texts about "some kid" who showed up for the first days of the Warriors offseason drills, an incoming freshman who was impressing the assistant coaches with his high level of ability.

That kid was Christian Nunez.

Stanley had seen Nunez play before and hoped that the soccer prodigy would be a part of his program when he got to the ninth grade.

"I used to help run a recess program through Trebol (Soccer Club) with the elementary school around here," Stanley said. "And when he was in the fourth grade, I saw him out at recess playing and I remember thinking "I hope this kid comes to Centaurus.""

Centaurus freshman Christian Nunez leads the 7-2 Warriors in goals scored with 11. (Courtesy photo)

Even at a young age, Nunez had visions of pursuing his soccer playing future through Trebol, notably with the Colorado Rapids developmental squad and then later professionally.

When that fell through and by no means is that vision of playing for them gone Nunez decided to don the red, white and blue of the Warriors and hasn"t looked back.

Through the first nine matches of the season, Nunez has scored 11 goals, including two Thursday in a 4-2 win over Longmont, and has a point in all but one game. To date, Centaurus is 7-2 overall and 2-1 in the highly competitive Northern League.

"I was just hoping to make varsity my freshman year," said Nunez, who scored a hat-trick in a 5-0 shutout of Erie. "These guys respect me a lot and I respect them too."

The respect has come from his ability on the field. His on the ball talent, footwork and ability to make a defender look bad are at the highest level.

"He came in with the talents he has, and I honestly think the game is a little slower for him," Stanley said. "He is able to see things that a lot of other kids his age are just not. His skill is one of the main reason why everyone was so quick to accept him."

The Warriors as a whole have welcomed Nunez who has been playing the game since he was 3 years old and said, "I loved it ever since" with open arms and there was an immediate bond with senior Miguel Ramirez. The two have been a cohesive unit, with each helping the other in their own way.

Ramirez has taken Nunez under his wing and made the freshman feel at home, while Nunez has helped accentuate the leadership ability in Ramirez.

"(Christian) is a big part of this team, he"s like a mortar. When things seem to be going bad, he"ll have a genius play and get us back in the game," Ramirez said. "He"s really good, but he"s still a freshman and he"s going to get better."

The Warriors dropped their first Northern League match of the season last week in Greeley to Northridge and did so without their regular starting goalkeeper. They bounced back to beat Longmont.

The next three games will be the make-or-break game for the Warriors. They get both Silver Creek and Niwot next week before taking on league leading Greeley Central the following week.
