Television|Review: Netflix Does Queen Elizabeth II in "The Crown," No Expense Spared

Prince William Gets Scolded by Queen Elizabeth II

A pricey prestige drama about a British monarch? Should we prepare for an orgy of beheadings, s*x scandals and battlefield brutality?

Well, no; just an orgy of sumptuous scenes and rich performances.

The series is The Crown, and the monarch is Elizabeth II, the very woman who sits on the British throne today. Shes not exactly the kind of hard-living, bloodthirsty ruler who makes for frothy television, and The Crown, a 10-part drama that becomes available Friday on Netflix, doesnt try to pretend that she is. This is a thoughtful series that lingers over death rather than using it for shock value; one that finds its story lines in small power struggles rather than gruesome palace coups. Here, it takes an episode and a half just for George VI (Jared Harris) to cough himself to death so that Elizabeth (Claire Foy) can ascend to the throne.

Peter Morgan, creator and writer of the series, showed with Frost/Nixon and other works that history doesnt have to be gory to make good drama. Here, a budget widely reported to be over $100 million helps him prove that again: The Crown looks expensive right from the start, investing its money in actors like John Lithgow, who makes a fine Winston Churchill, and in a wealth of historical detail.

The series focuses on the queens early years on the throne, but it begins before Georges death in 1952, when she was a princess leading a relatively carefree life with her husband, Prince Philip (Matt Smith). Their wedding in 1947 is lavishly rendered 12 minutes into the opening episode.

In less patient hands, the next five years would be condensed into five minutes, with George seen chain-smoking enough to make the point that cigarettes kill, then dying so that we could get on with Elizabeths story. But The Crown takes its time arriving at that sea-change moment, and the result is a delicate study in the power of breaking news then versus now.

Today, thanks to the internet and social media, everyone knows almost immediately when something major or even not so major happens. Five minutes after the death of a person of the kings stature, the event would have been absorbed, the praying for George tweets would have been posted, and the snarky post-mortem would already be underway. The Crown lets you feel (or remember) what it was like when information moved more slowly. Elizabeth and Philip were on a world tour at the time. Just reaching her with word that she was now the queen was an ordeal, and in following that thread the series also conveys how the news rolled across the British Empire a growing shock wave rather than a quick burst.

Thats the kind of treatment needed in a historical drama set in the 1950s, a decade that could not compete with the one immediately before or after it in terms of eventfulness. The Crown is not without its power struggles and scandals. Churchill, who reassumed the post of prime minister in 1951, was thought to be old and out of step even by some in his own party. Princess Margaret (Vanessa Kirby), Elizabeths sister, was having a dalliance with a married man, Peter Townsend (Ben Miles).

But these are relatively tame goings-on compared with some throne-based television fare. Like Downton Abbey, this is a series you watch to see actors being given the time to act, and to be reminded of or introduced to historical nuggets. Episode 4, for instance, involves the lethal fog that blanketed London in 1952, a haze of toxic pollutants that not only killed thousands of people but also had political ramifications. Its easy for a writer to weave drama out of a war or an assassination. But out of fog? Kudos to Mr. Morgan.

Chelsea Manning attempted suicide again, says lawyer

Video: Obama Heckled Over Chelsea Manning Sentencing

Chelsea Manning has tried to kill herself for the second time in recent months, a lawyer for the US transgender soldier said.

Manning attempted suicide last month at the military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, said Vincent Ward.

Manning also tried to take her own life in July.

Wayne Hall, an army spokesman, would not discuss the latest attempt, citing medical privacy laws.

Manning is serving a 35-year sentence.

She was arrested in 2010 as Bradley Manning and was convicted in 2013 in military court of leaking more than 700,000 secret military and US State Department documents to WikiLeaks.

Manning was an intelligence analyst in Iraq at the time.

Bridgegate juror details anguish during deliberations: report

Former Chris Christie aides found guilty in Bridgegate scandal

A member of the jury that convicted two top former gubernatorial aides in the political scheme to create traffic woes said the biggest obstacle to reaching a verdict was the impact a guilty vote would have on the defendants" lives, according to a report by NorthJersey.com.

That juror, who asked to be identified only as "Juror No. 10," was a Morris County man who said the initial split was eight in favor of guilty, with four against that verdict, according to the report.

He declined to give any details about the "conflict issue," a according to the report, but said it had to do with the impact a guilty verdict would have on the lives of the two defendants, former Port Authority appointee Bill Baroni and former Chris Christie aide Bridget Anne Kelly.

Kelly is the single mother of four children. Experts say that while the charges could abring up to 20 years in prison, a likely sentence would be about far less, possibly three years.

Another juror, Virginia Huffman of Chatham, told NJ Advance Media late Friday that she felt Gov. Chris Christie himself should have been on trial as well, since the scheme to create an epic traffic jam timed for the first day of school was done for his political benefit.

She called Kelly and Baroni "sacrificial lambs."

Christie issued a statement after Friday"s verdict, reiterating his claim that he didn"t plan or know about the plot to create traffic woes as a means of political retribution for a local mayor"s reluctance to endorse him.

Both defendants indicated they plan to appeal the verdict. Sentencing is scheduled for February.

Jennifer Lawrence is Dating Darren Aronofsky - People

Master Class of Darren Aronofsky in OIFF 2015 (english)

Jennifer Lawrence is no stranger to having her love life in the public eye. But the actress, who is now dating Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky, is more relaxed in her new relationship than she has been in the past, a source tells PEOPLE.

The Hunger Games star was most recently linked to Coldplay frontman Chris Martin. (The two began dating five months after Martin split from wife Gwyneth Paltrow, and dated on and off for a year before parting ways.)

She struggled when she dated Chris [Martin] and seemed very stressed out, a source tells PEOPLE of the spotlight that comes with dating the singer. With Darren, it will probably be different. He does not attract attention like Chris does.

The source adds that like Lawrence, the director is very low-key.

He does not seem like a person who enjoys being a celebrity. Jennifer is the same, says the source.

Lawrence, 26 and Aronofsky, 47, worked together on an untitled film over the summer. (The film, which Aronofsky wrote and directed, also stars Ed Harris, Michelle Pfeiffer and Javier Bardem.)

The Oscar winner was first spotted dining with the Brooklyn native in New York City in August, and then the two stepped out again for an intimate dinner with her close friends at the Commissary restaurant at The Line Hotel in L.A. on Oct. 21.

AKM-GSI

Theyve been hanging out and are casually dating, says the Lawrence pal.

The director was previously in a nine-year relationship with actress Rachel Weisz (the two have a son, 10-year-old Henry), before they broke up in 2010, and Weisz moved on to marry her Dream House costar Daniel Craig.

Lawrence is the first to admit she doesnt have a type when it comes to men, and thats just how she likes it. Patterns are the work of the devil, she told Harpers Bazaar earlier this year. If I think about all of my ex-boyfriends, they are all so uncomparable.

How To Vote On Election Day! | Huffington Post

How to Figure Out Who to Vote For

Campaign handouts

After nearly 730 days of vigorously campaigning to be your next President, I am ready after November 8th to go back to being a writer and father. But before I do so, I want to give you my best advice on how to vote.

To begin with, I want to honor all those of you who have followed and supported my campaign. I will be voting for myself, and I welcome you to vote for me too. Bear in mind that voting for me is a protest vote, and it will almost certainly make no technical difference. Being realistic, you"re better off to vote practically on November 8th and to vote your conscience--I encourage that.

Also, should you decide to vote for me, you should write my FEC registered legal name in as Zoltan Istvan Gyurko. Also, in New York and Florida, you should include my placeholder Vice President Lisa Memmel in the write-in space. Finally, the only other states I"m quite certain my vote will count in are Vermont, Wyoming, Oregon, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Iowa, Delaware, and Alabama. They may count in some others--the rules are complex.

The campaign bumper sticker

For the record, my campaign from the start was never about trying to win the presidency. It was about pushing the meaning and ideas of my campaign slogan: Putting science, health, and technology at the forefront of American politics.

Finally, these are the three defining OpEds I wrote about my campaign over two years. Check them out: my Huffington Post original "Transhumanist Party Forming and Candidacy Declaration" article; last year"s Gizmodo "Why I"m Running for President" story; and last week"s Vice Motherboard "What I Learned Running for President" article.

The country is at an important crossroads. It"s in everyone"s hands to make a difference. But no matter what happens, you should get out to vote. You should insist on it. Good luck!
