Work halted on Dakota Access Pipeline

Protesters celebrate after Army denies Dakota Access pipeline permit

CANNON BALL, N.D. (AP) The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said Sunday that it wont grant an easement for the dakota access oil pipeline in southern North Dakota, handing a victory to the Standing Rock Sioux tribe and its supporters, who argued the project would threaten the tribes water source and cultural sites.

North Dakotas leaders criticized the decision, with Gov. Jack Dalrymple calling it a serious mistake that prolongs the dangerous situation of having several hundred protesters who are camped out on federal land during cold, wintry weather. U.S. Rep. Kevin Cramer said its a very chilling signal for the future of infrastructure in the United States.

The four-state, $3.8 billion project is largely complete except for the now-blocked segment underneath Lake Oahe, a Missouri River reservoir. Assistant Secretary for Civil Works Jo-Ellen Darcy said in a news release that her decision was based on the need to explore alternate routes for the pipelines crossing. Her full decision doesnt rule out that it could cross under the reservoir or north of Bismarck.

Although we have had continuing discussion and exchanges of new information with the Standing Rock Sioux and Dakota Access, its clear that theres more work to do, Darcy said. The best way to complete that work responsibly and expeditiously is to explore alternate routes for the pipeline crossing.

The company constructing the pipeline, Dallas-based Energy Transfer Partners, released a statement Sunday night slamming the decision as politically motivated and alleging that President Obamas administration was determined to delay the matter until he leaves office.

The White Houses directive today to the Corps for further delay is just the latest in a series of overt and transparent political actions by an administration which has abandoned the rule of law in favor of currying favor with a narrow and extreme political constituency, the company said.

President-elect Donald Trump, a pipeline supporter, will take office in January, although it wasnt immediately clear what steps his administration would be able to take to reverse the Army Corps latest decision or how quickly that could happen.

The decision came a day before the governments deadline for the several hundred people at the Oceti Sakowin, or Seven Council Fires, encampment to leave the federal land. But demonstrators say theyre prepared to stay, and authorities say they wont forcibly remove them.

As the news spread Sunday, cheers and cheers and chants of mni wichoni water is life in Lakota Sioux broke out among the protesters. Some in the crowd banged drums. Miles Allard, a member of the Standing Rock Sioux, said he was pleased but remained cautious, saying, We dont know what Trump is going to do.

The whole world is watching, Allard added. Im telling all our people to stand up and not to leave until this is over.

Attorney General Loretta Lynch said Sunday that the Department of Justice will continue to monitor the situation and stands ready to provide resources to help all those who can play a constructive role in easing tensions.

The safety of everyone in the area law enforcement officers, residents and protesters alike continues to be our foremost concern, she added.

Carla Youngbear of the Meskwaki Potawatomi tribe made her third trip from central Kansas to be at the protest site.

I have grandchildren, and Im going to have great grandchildren, she said. They need water. Water is why Im here.

Standing Rock Sioux tribal chairman Dave Archambault didnt immediately respond to messages left seeking comment.

Morton County Sheriff Kyle Kirchmeier, whose department has done much of the policing for the protests, said that local law enforcement does not have an opinion on the easement and that his department will continue to enforce the law.

U.S. Secretary for the Interior Sally Jewell said in a statement that the Corps thoughtful approach ensures that there will be an in-depth evaluation of alternative routes for the pipeline and a closer look at potential impacts.

Earlier Sunday, an organizer with Veterans Stand for Standing Rock said tribal elders had asked the military veterans not to have confrontations with law enforcement officials, adding the group is there to help out those whove dug in against the project.

About 250 veterans gathered about a mile from the main camp for a meeting with organizer Wes Clark Jr., the son of former Democratic presidential candidate Gen. Wesley Clark. The group had said about 2,000 veterans were coming, but it wasnt clear how many actually arrived.

We have been asked by the elders not to do direct action, Wes Clark Jr. said. He added that the National Guard and law enforcement have armored vehicles and are armed, warning: If we come forward, they will attack us.

Instead, he told the veterans, If you see someone who needs help, help them out.

Authorities moved a blockade from the north end of the Backwater Bridge with the conditions that protesters stay south of it and come there only if there is a prearranged meeting. Authorities also asked protesters not to remove barriers on the bridge, which they have said was damaged in the late October conflict that led to several people being hurt, including a serious arm injury.

That heavy presence is gone now and I really hope in this de-escalation theyll see that, and in good faith . the leadership in those camps will start squashing the violent factions, Cass County Sheriff Paul Laney said in a statement, reiterating that any violation will will result in their arrest.

Veterans Stand for Standing Rocks GoFundMe.com page had raised more than $1 million of its $1.2 million goal by Sunday money due to go toward food, transportation and supplies. Cars waiting to get into the camp Sunday afternoon were backed up for more than a half-mile.

People are fighting for something, and I thought they could use my help, said Navy veteran and Harvard graduate student Art Grayson. The 29-year-old from Cambridge, Massachusetts, flew the first leg of the journey, then rode from Bismarck in the back of a pickup truck. He has finals this week, but told professors, Ill see you when I get back.

Steven Perry, a 66-year-old Vietnam veteran whos a member of the Little Traverse Bay band of Odawa Indians in Michigan, spoke of one of the protesters main concerns: that the pipeline could pollute drinking water. This is not just a native issue, he said, This is an issue for everyone.

Art Woodson and two other veterans drove 17 hours straight from Flint, Michigan, a city whose lead-tainted water crisis parallels with the tribes fight over water, he said.

We know in Flint that water is in dire need, the 49-year-old disabled Gulf War Army veteran said. In North Dakota, theyre trying to force pipes on people. Were trying to get pipes in Flint for safe water.

Some veterans will take part in a prayer ceremony Monday, during which theyll apologize for historical detrimental conduct by the military toward Native Americans and ask for forgiveness, Clark said. He also called the veterans presence about right and wrong and peace and love.

Oh my G*d, the Redskins ran another goal line fade

Skip and Shannon Undisputed - Redskins Defeat Packers(42-34): Kirk Cousins:375 Yds, 3TD

You threw the fade again, Sonny Jurgensen said to Redskins Coach Jay Gruden after Sundays Redskins loss in Arizona, sadness and disappointmentsoftly dripping from his voice.

Yeah, we threw the fade, said Gruden, who has been down this road with Jurgensen before. And Patrick [Peterson] made a good play on it. We just overthrew it a little bit.

And so we can end that discussion for this week, and move on to more pre . . . oh. Right. Nope!

People still want to talk about that failed third-down fade route to DeSean Jackson, in which Washingtons small and fast receiver was covered by Arizonas best cornerback. It didnt work.

I was dumbfounded by the play, said Santana Moss on csns redskinstalk. i expected a little more of using [Jacksons] abilities. I remember in 2014 seeing DeSean have a good matchup against Patrick [Peterson], running slants, being able to be cat-quick with his ability. And to see him sit there and have to run a fade, it just seems to me when they get down there they have no solution. They have nothing else but to say Hey, lets throw a fade to someone and hopefully well get lucky. So theyve got to come better with some better plays down there.

The fade has been something of a dirty word in Washington since the Week 2 loss to the Cowboys, when the Redskins attempted approximately 734 goal-line fades without scoring.

Coach, why do people fall in love with the short fade down at the goal line? Jurgensen asked Gruden after that loss. We tried it three times!

Yeah, we tried it three times, and well try it again three times next week if we have to, Gruden responded.

There hasnt been a good fade outrage since then, but neither has there been much red-zone success. Sundays dalliance came on a third-and-one play near the end of the first half, with the Redskins desperate for a touchdown. It went toward Jackson, one of Washingtons smaller players. It didnt work, leading to a field goal. And that kicked off yet another round of questions about Washingtons goal-line offense, starting with Washingtons radio crew.

Im gonna leave that one to you, Sonny, Chris Cooley cracked.

Theres Sonnys fade, his favorite play, and its incomplete, Larry Michael added

Its not my favorite play! Jurgensen protested.

You know, its not my favorite play, and I also dont like challenging Patrick Peterson in that situation, Cooley said. You throw the fade at their best player? I really dont like that decision. And I dont know if thats a Sean [McVay], a Jay [Gruden] or a Kirk [Cousins] decision, whether you work somewhere else, but I dont work at Patrick Peterson on the fade.

Youve got to see something different, youve got to see something more, Moss said. The fade just threw everybody off. Right now Im still lost, because I dont have more to talk about it. And Im still wondering why, especially on Patrick Peterson.

Not only is there a failure [to run it in], there is not an attempt to run it in, Clinton Portis said on ESPN 980. Thats the worst part. We dont attempt to run it in.

I remember someone on this team the owner who left some vanilla ice ream on a desk of the defensive coordinator, Brian Mitchell said on CSN. Well thats what they should do to this offense. They run the same plays in the same rhythm every d**n time, until they get into the red zone, and then they dont know what theyre doing. So for me, the coaches have to do things a little better so when the players go into games, theyre given the best opportunity to win.

For me inside the red zone is all Im really concerned about, because from 20 to 20 this team is the best team out there, Mitchell later said on ESPN 980. Someone says [offensive coordinator] Sean McVay is a genius. Well the only genius I know is ones that score touchdowns on a regular basis. Not the ones that cant get in the end zone and have to keep kicking field goals. So for me, theyve got to figure out a way in the red zone to take chances. . . . An offense with all these weapons, and you get down in the red zone and its like you dont know whats going on or how to attack or who to use or what to do. It just doesnt seem right, doesnt seem sensible to me.

What is the extracorporeal heart assist device that Jayalalithaa"s doctors have put her on?

என்ன ஆச்சு ஜெ. விற்கு தெளிவான அறிக்கை வெளியிடுமா அரசு | Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalitha Health Conditions
NEW DELHI: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa suffered a cardiac arrest+ late on Sunday. She was put on a heart assist device.

Apollo Hospital, where she"s being treated, said on Twitter:

What is an extracorporeal membrane heart assist device?

An extracorporeal medical procedure is one which is performed outside the body.

An extracorporeal membrane heart assist device then assists a person whose heart and lungs are unable to produce enough oxygen to stay alive. That process is called Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).

Criteria for the initiation of ECMO include acute severe cardiac or pulmonary failure that is potentially reversible and unresponsive to conventional management, according to the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization.

CMO has the word "oxygenation" in it because the heart assist device removes blood from a person"s body, diminishes carbon dioxide in the blood and pumps oxygen into the red blood cells to infuse life giving blood that helps a person stay alive.

The blood is pumped directly into the body to energise it as the heart and lungs are unable to perform that pumping, life-giving function.

While reports vary about survival rates, with acute respiratory failure, the use of ECMO has been shown to improve survival rates, say some scientific papers. "Survival rates from 50 to 70 percent have been reported in observational and uncontrolled clinical trials," according to a 2009 scientific paper by Thomas V. Brogan, Ravi R. Thiagarajan, Peter T. Rycus, Robert H. Bartlett and Susan L. Bratton.

Redskins Turn Their Attention To The Eagles

Carson Palmer Launches a 42-Yard TD Strike to J.J. Nelson! | Redskins vs. Cardinals | NFL

Its back to Philadelphia for the Redskins next Sunday, as the Redskins will close out their season series with the Eagles during a key Week 14 NFC East battle at Lincoln Financial Field.

The Redskins enter next Sundays contest with a 6-5-1 record following Sundays 31-23 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

The Eagles, meanwhile, are 5-7 after they lost to the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, 32-14. Philadelphia started the season with a perfect 3-0 record through their first three games including a blowout victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers, but have struggled over their last nine games.

Quarterbacking the Eagles is No. 2-overall pick Carson Wentz, as the rookie out of North Dakota State has performed well in his debut season, throwing for more than 2,700 yards with 12 touchdowns to 11 interceptions.

While Wentz has been effective under center, the running game continues to benefit from multiple players getting carries, as they entered Week 13 action ninth in the NFL in rushing yards per game (114.9) with 11 touchdowns.

Seven of those touchdowns were from Ryan Mathews, while Darren Sproles is averaging nearly five yards per run despite being one of the oldest players at the position right now.

Philadelphias receiving weapons dont exactly stand out, as they have yet to see one of their young wideouts break out into a No. 1 option.

Jordan Matthews does have more than 700 receiving yards, but just three touchdowns on the campaign. 2015 first-round pick Nelson Agholor has struggled, though, as he was a healthy scratch against the Packers two weeks ago and is averaging less than 10 yards per receptions even with renowned speed.

Defensively, Nigel Bradham leads the team in tackles (78), while Fletcher c*x and Connor Barwin are the teams biggest pass rushing threats.

Sundays game will mark the 163rd time the two teams have met dating back to the 1934 season.

the redskins currently hold a four-game winning streak in the series, most recently defeating the Eagles 27-20 in Week 7 action, as Washingtons rushing attack collected more than 200 yards on the ground while the defense didnt allow a touchdown.

In Week 16 action last year the last time the two teams met in the Eagles home stadium Washington cruised past Philadelphia 38-24 to clinch the NFC East and a trip to the playoffs.

Anna Kendrick Weighs in On "Last Tango in Paris" Controversy: Maria Schneider Said This "Years Ago"

portami il burro, voglio farti un discorso sulla famiglia

Anna Kendrick weighed in on the controversy surrounding the recently surfaced interview with Last Tango in Paris director Bernardo Bertolucci, and she pointed out one piece of the conversation thats been largely missing.

As previously reported, Bertolucci admitted in a 2013 Q&A filmed at Paris La Cinmathque franaise that the infamous butter rape scene in his hit 1972 flick was not consensual meaning, he and leading man Marlon Brando came up with the conceit the morning of the shoot.

PHOTOS: Celebs Fight Back on Twitter! Maria Schneider and Marlon Brando in "Last Tango in Paris" Courtesy Entertainment Pictures

The sequence of the butter is an idea that I had with Marlon in the morning before shooting," he said in the interview. We were having, with Marlon, breakfast on the floor of the flat where I was shooting. There was a baguette, there was butter and we looked at each other and, without saying anything, we knew what we wanted. (In the scene, Brando uses the stick of butter as sexual lubricant on Maria Schneiders character.)

Celebrities immediately slammed the famed director and the legendary actor for their actions. Among them was The Avengers star Chris Evans, who tweeted that he felt rage upon learning the news.

Kendrick, 31, who costarred with Evans, 35, in 2010s Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, took the opportunity to point out that the non-consensual nature of the scene was something the late Schneider had brought up during a 2007 interview, but that it was largely ignored.

Ms Schneider stated this several years ago, she tweeted at Evans. I used to get eye-rolls when I brought it up to people (aka dudes).

Evans, who seemed to have learned about the disturbing details of the scene for the first time earlier this week, tweeted back: Had no idea. Woulda felt rage then too. They should be in jail.

Kendrick concurred that the problem was a very real one, though she made it a point to underline how telling the publics response was to Schneider and Bertoluccis statements.

I dont doubt it, she replied. It wasnt treated like a big story then (shocker). Glad at least it will be taken seriously now.

In a 2007 interview with The Daily Mail, Schneider recalled of the day, Marlon said to me, Maria, dont worry, its just a movie, but during the scene, even though what Marlon was doing wasnt real, I was crying real tears. I felt humiliated and to be honest, I felt a little raped, both by Marlon and by Bertolucci. After the scene, Marlon didnt console me or apologize. Thankfully, there was just one take.
