Updated December 13, 2016, 3:20 AM

Hillary Clintons growing lead over Donald J. Trump is now over 1 million votes, making this the second time a president has been elected without a popular majority since 2000. That year, Akhil Reed Amar wrote in an op-ed for The New York Times that the electoral college should be abolished, and Charles Fried disagreed. Here they are again.

This is part of the Issues for Trump and America series.

Judy Garland - The Joint Is Really Jumpin" In Carnegie Hall (Thousands Cheer, 1943)

theres a dress that judy garland wears in A Star is Born its this beautiful green dress, and thats the hue we were going for because it was magical in that film, reflectedcostume designer Mary Zophres about oneof her key inspirations for Emma Stones look in the highly anticipated film La La Land. La La Land is a musical romance about a jazz pianist (Ryan Gosling) who falls in love with an aspiring actress (Stone). Its director Damien Chazelles followup to a much different kind of music-driven film, the jazz-teacher-from-h**l drama Whiplash, which won three Oscars in 2014.

We followed the directors vision. He was very convincing, and he was really communicative about what he wanted, Zophres explained about working with Chazelle, but the filmmaker also gave the production team enough space to develop their own ideas. So Zophres had the opportunity to prepare for four days with production designer David Wasco and set decorator Sandy Reynolds-Wasco, which helped significantly on this high-stakes production because I knew right off the bat that I had taken copious notes I could share with my department. Then on day four it was like, Are you ready, get set, go! because then we had six weeks after that to do it.

Before La La Land, Zophres worked extensively with the Coen Brothers, designing the costumes for Fargo (1996) The Big Lebowski (1998) O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000) and No Country for Old Men (2007) but it was the Coens True Grit (2010) that finally earned her her first Oscar nomination for Best Costume Design. In addition, Zophres has worked on a wide variety of film genres, from screwball comedy (Theres Something About Mary, 1998), to period drama (Gangster Squad, 2013), to sci-fi (Interstellar, 2014).

Steelers get some help from Browns" mistakes

Ben Roethlisberger Leads Opening Drive TD! | Steelers vs. Saints | NFL

CLEVELAND -- The Pittsburgh Steelers scored eight points with no time on the clock at the end of the first half on Sunday.

The Cleveland Browns committed two penalties to give the steelers two untimed downs. it"s a rare day when the Browns complete a game without some sort of head-shaking event, and this day has been no different.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin aggressively pushed the envelope late in the half. Pittsburgh led 6-0 and had driven to the Browns" 3-yard line with three seconds left. Tomlin went for the touchdown.

Roethlisberger threw incomplete to Antonio Brown. But Browns corner Briean Boddy-Calhoun was flagged for holding Le"Veon Bell in the end zone.

That gave Pittsburgh another play from the 1 with no time on the clock. Roethlisberger took a shotgun snap, faked a handoff to Bell and threw a quick slant to Brown. It fell incomplete, but Joe Haden was flagged for interference.

Pittsburgh got another extra play.

  • The Browns couldn"t overcome being dominated in the first half or a long list of mistakes as they fell to 0-11 in a loss to Pittsburgh.

  • The Steelers" first win in 42 days felt less like a turning point and more like an exercise in survival, unless this eight-sack performance against the Browns underscores a suddenly renewed defense.

  • Browns rookie quarterback Cody Kessler was ruled out for the rest of Sunday"s game against the Steelers with a concussion.

This time Roethlisberger handed to Bell from the shotgun, and he scored standing up. Roethlisberger"s two point conversion went to David Johnson, and the Steelers went to the locker room up 14-0 in a game they dominated.

"Oh yeah, it was frustrating," said Browns coach Hue Jackson. "Those are tough calls and one that was made that I thought was kind of ... it is what it is. We have to find a way to keep them out of there. That"s what it comes down to."

Jackson said he thought the Steelers could have been called for delay of game on the play that resulted in holding.

"There is nothing you can do," he said. "They either have to call it or not."

In the first half, Pittsburgh had 18 first downs to the Browns" four. The Steelers outgunned the Browns 217 to 50, and held the ball for 20:37 of the first 30 minutes. The Browns ran 17 first-half plays, which ties for the fewest plays by a team in the first half this season (Patriots, vs. Bills in week four), according to ESPN Stats & Information.

The Steelers wound up winning 24-9, snapping a four-game losing streak, and the Browns remained winless. Cleveland had 33 yards rushing in its 14th straight loss, dating to last season.

In the previous game against Baltimore, the Browns called timeout before the first snap. Sunday against Pittsburgh they gave the Steelers two extra plays at the end of the half.

Japan protests over China"s complaint about fighter jets

Powell"s TD Sets Up Jets 1st Successful 2-Point Conversion in 106 Games | NFL Week 14 Highlights

TOKYO Japan said on Monday it had protested to China over a Chinese complaint that Japanese fighter jets had engaged in "dangerous and unprofessional" behavior when they scrambled at the weekend as Chinese aircraft flew near Japanese islands.

Chinese military aircraft on Saturday flew between Japan"s Okinawa and Miyako islands, and over waterways near self-ruled Taiwan - seen by Beijing as a renegade province - as part of long-range exercises, Taiwan said.

Chinese defence ministry spokesman Yang Yujun said in a statement on Saturday that two Japanese f-15 fighter jets flew over the Miyako Strait and conducted "close range interference", firing decoy flares and "jeopardizing the security of Chinese aircraft and pilots".

Yang said China had grave concerns and lodged a protest over the behavior of the Japanese aircraft during what he called "routine" drills in international waters.

But Japan rejected China"s assertion.

"I have received a report from the defence minister that the Japanese planes did not conduct any close-range interference toward the Chinese military planes ... or threaten the safety of Chinese military planes or its personnel," Japan"s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said.

"The fact that Chinas military unilaterally announced something clearly different from the facts is extremely regrettable and harms the improvement of relations between Japan and China, and we have strictly protested to the Chinese side," he said.

Suga said Japan would watch the actions of the Chinese military, "which are expanding and increasing", and make every effort towards "firmly protecting our country"s land, sea and air space and, in accordance with international and domestic law, take strict measures against anyinvasion of our airspace".

In Beijing on Monday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang urged Japan to take steps to prevent "safety problems on the sea and in the air".

He did not elaborate.
