Seidel: Michigan football finishes 5 points from being truly special

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. You had to figure this gamewas going to be strange when Renegade, Florida State"s mascot horse, took a tumble during the pregame festivities.

After that?

It got even crazier.

There were injuries and collapses and comebacks and then some more collapses and comebacks sometimes, it seemed to happen in the same breath -- and then came the blocked extra point and the kickoff and the final collapse. All in all, it was enough to make your head spin, as the Orange Bowl turned into a wild crazy drama on fast forward that Florida State pulled out with a 33-32 victory over Michigan.

The way I feel about it is it was a heck of a game, Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh said.

And now that the season over, what are we to make of this Michigan team? This team that had so much potential but ended the season by losing three of its last four games?

To be fair, it should be pointed out that this team lost those three games by a total of five points. Change a few plays here and there and everything would have been far different. In this game. In this season.

Related:

But ultimately, that didnt happen. This team fell short of its potential. It failed to get to the College Football Playoff. It failed to win the Big Ten championship. It failed to win the Orange Bowl.

It was a season of unfulfilled potential. Close but five points short.

I love them, love these guys, Harbaugh said. Great group of competitors, great group of workers, and a great group of guys that find a way. They"ve got a will to win. Not just they want to win; I mean, they must win. I love them for it.

For most of this game, Michigan was stuck between a Hard Rock and a hard place.

All-AmericalinebackerJabrill Peppers sat out of the Orange Bowl with a leg injury. Tight end Jake b**t was lost to a knee injury. Quarterback Wilton Speight was getting beat up. He was sacked and whacked and looked genuinely frustrated, while missing wide-open receivers in the end zone. The Wolverines couldnt run the ball and michigans stifling defense looked out of whack.

Related:

Thats a pretty hard place, as Florida State built a 20-6 halftime lead at the Orange Bowl in Hard Rock Stadium.

But Michigan punter Kenny Allen kept pinning FSU deep. Where would this team have been without his punting?

And then Michigan linebacker Mike McCray picked off a pass and plunged into the end zone for a touchdown hey, if the offense cant score a touchdown, the defense has to pick up the slack.

I"ve got to give credit to Ben Gedeon, McCray said. He called it out and I was going on the blitz and he asked me to help him out, and I did. I guess I just caught the ball and scored.

Suddenly, Michigan had life.

Suddenly, Michigan had a chance.

The Wolverines defense was pushing FSU backward.

Then, Dalvin Cook took over. The Wolverines were doing a good job of containing Cook until whoops there he goes. He broke two tackles, outran everybody else and ripped off a 71-yarder. Four plays later, FSU quarterback Deondre Francois strolled into the end zone, giving FSU a 27-15 lead.

I think he"s a great player, Harbaugh said. It was a heck of an effort on his part and our part, I thought, from where I was standing.

Just like that, the Wolverines were back in a familiar place.

Stuck between that Hard Rock and a Hard Place.

Related:

But Michigan wouldnt fold.

There was Speight, hitting Khalid Hill on a touchdown, as FSU held a 27-22 lead.

Basically I had an under route, and I saw that it was zone, and I saw Wilton escaping to the right, and I just stopped, and he saw me and he hit me, Hill said.

Again, Michigan had life, in this wild, crazy, Orange Bowl.

Then, it looked like Michigan was going to win after Chris Evans dived into the end zone.

You keep pounding away at it, Harbaugh said, and keep chipping away at it and then you start making the four-yard gains and then the six-yard gains and then the 10-yard gains, and then finally we popped one there with Chris Evans.

Then, the unthinkable. Keith Gavin returned the kickoff 66 yards. Four playslater, Francois hit Nyqwan Murray on a 12-yard touchdown that gave FSU the win.

What a crazy night.

It all started with Peppers.

Before the game, the hot scuttlebutt was that Peppers was hurt and wasnt going to play. But Peppers came out during warmups, catching punts. He moved gingerly and appeared to have trouble with his left leg.

Jabrill had his hamstring grab on him yesterday, and he was jumping for a ball, it was very unfortunate, Harbaugh said. He wasn"t able to run, could see it on the film yesterday, and couldn"t get to where he could run and be effective out there, so we didn"t play him.

It sucked, Peppers said, adding that he hasnt decided if he will turn pro.

At halftime, Florida State had a 20-6 lead and the Wolverines were all out of whack.

The Wolverines had no answer for DeMarcus Walker, a 6-foot-3 and 280-pound defensive lineman who dominated. This came as no surprise to Harbaugh. Before the game, the U-M coach called Walker FSUs best player.

And still, Michigan couldnt block him.

FSU came into this game with the most sacks in the country and it only continued in this game, whacking Speight. He was sacked three times in the first three quarters.

Speight was not sharp early, completing just three of his first nine passes. He missed Jehu Chesson in the right corner of the end zone and later he missed Amara Darboh in the end zone.

He bent over, clearly frustrated.

But the Wolverines came back.

Give Michigan credit for how it fought back.

There was no quit in this team.

But in the end, it was five points from being truly special.

Azealia Banks Reveals She Suffered a Miscarriage

Azealia Banks - Ice Princess

Azealia Banks announced some sad news on Facebook Tuesday morning.

In a series of updates, the "212" rapper opened up about a "major life event," writing, "This wouldn"t be an Azealia Banks page without loads of oversharing right? Anywho, I"ve just had a miscarriage and am pretty taken aback by it all." Banks is experiencing confusion, depression, guilt and shock. Additionally, Banks confessed she now feels "like a failure and very ashamed."

With seemingly nowhere else to turn, Banks reached out to her fans for support. "Has anyone else had this same experience who cares to share some words of wisdom or words of anything regarding this topic?" the 25-year-old Harlem-raised rapper asked. "The self-loathing bit is a real struggle for me at the moment so share any words here. They will be greatly appreciated."

After one Facebook fan suggested the rapper should have kept the miscarriage news private until she had some more "time to reflect," banks replied, "It"s life and we all live it together. Everyone farts, s--ts, f--ks , eats and sleeps. It"s bodily function 101. Why the need for secrecy."

In another update, Banks told her Facebook followers, "I feel really stupid because I think I"m so big and bad an in control and in this situation I"m so powerless." When she first saw "the embryo," the rapper recalled, "I felt this full spirit around me and was looking down at this little bean in horror/amazement and now I just can"t NOT have an awareness of this person and won"t stop feeling like any and everything I"ve ever done in my life or want to do is pointless."

"I"m really over it," she added, "and not with the s--ts right now."

Banks asked people to be respectful and considerate after making the news public. "I"ve had a real rough 2016," the musician explained. "I honestly need a break from the public crucifixions. This is a women"s health issue that many others may or may not be able to relate to. Please don"t f--k UP an opportunity for clear, open and beneficial discourse between WOMEN!" After sharing her story publicly, Banks finally felt "calm and sleepy," saying, "I haven"t slept all night."

Before going to bed, however, Banks removed a few posts.

"*Trolls are coming in*," the rapper wrote. "*delete delete*."

32 important facts about LeBron James on his 32nd birthday

LeBron James Full Highlights 2016.12.25 vs Warriors - 31 Pts, 13 Rebs, 4 Ast, 2 Stls, 2 GOOD!

LeBron James is 32 years old today. This past decade of basketball has revolved around him, and his streak of six straight finals appearances is unprecedented and still going. Hes certainly the greatest player of this generation, and hes far from done.

We dont have a cake or a birthday card, and instead of getting him a gift we made him a gif.

Here are 32 things about James on his 32nd birthday, just because.

1. At 32, LeBron James is a three-time champion who has won four MVP awards. Obviously, he could make those numbers four and five this season, although through a third of a season there are several players who must be the favorite for MVP over him.

2. At 32, Michael Jordan won his fourth championship with two more following the next two years and his fourth of five MVP awards. He also averaged 30 points, something James has only done twice in his career and not since 2008.

3. Jordan is one of just two players to win an MVP past the age of 32. The other is Karl Malone, who did it twice at ages 33 and 35.

4. That said, James isnt comparing himself to Jordan.

I haven"t, because our games are so different, James told reporters on Thursday. He was much more of a scorer, and that point did a lot of, a lot of post work at that time. But our games are just different. His body is different. My body is different than his.

James continued: So, just, you recognize the dominance that someone had at that age, at that age you recognize his dominance, but there"s no similarities in our game at all.

5. James is right, of course. James is tying his career high in assists this season (8.6) and is nearly doing it with rebounds, too, averaging 7.9 while his career high is 8.0. After returning from baseball at 31, Jordan never averaged more than seven rebounds or six assists per season.

6. James coach Tyronn Lue compares him to a few players, Jordan included:

He"s got the explosiveness and power of Dominique Wilkins, the scoring ability of Jordan at times," Lue said. "The court vision and the way he pushes the pace like Magic Johnson and having the height, so he"s a mixture between three guys and as far as a comparison between him and Jordan, the comparisons I have is when you"re on top, the best player in the league for so long and having to carry that each and every year and never get knocked down off that pedestal, that"s a big accomplishment because guys are coming for you and you"re a target and to always stay on top no matter what, always being that best player in the league.

That"s how I compare him and Jordan.

7. Lets talk more about James passing because we can never do that enough. Heres a pass he made on Christmas Day that still blows my mind.

8. James top assist target is Kevin Love, followed by Channing Frye. They each average more than one made three off an assist from james per game.

9. No wonder the Cavaliers are second in three-point makes, three-point attempts, and three-point shooting percentage this season. (The Rockets are first in makes and attempts; the Spurs are first in percentage.)

10. Seriously, these are really my favorite LeBron passes, the speeding cross-court bullets that go exactly where he wants them to someone the defense doesnt even realize is open.

11. Speaking of threes, James is having the best three-point shooting season of his career. His 4.9 attempts tie a career high, his 1.9 made threes is a career high, and his 37.7 percent shooting is third-best in his career. (He had one season shooting 40.6 percent behind the arc in Miami, but it came on an attempt and a half less per game.)

12. Heres a terrifying stat: James is shooting 53.7 percent on catch-and-shoot three-pointers this season, per NBA.coms player tracking data.

13. Seriously: thats the second-best mark in the league (at least 0.5 attempts and 10 games). Its three percentage points better than Stephen Curry.

14. If youre wondering how James game will age, maybe extremely well if hes turned into a lethal spot-up shooter.

15. His overall percentage is dragged down by his 2.5 pull-up attempted threes per game, but if hes catching and firing, it goes in more than half the time.

16. James can explain why: I don"t know. It must be the wine drinking. Get better with age, I guess.

17. James certainly played his best playoff series ever last Finals. Heres something we only just now realized about it:

(only today did we realize LeBron was 31 when he came back from 3-1 in the Finals)

SB Nation (@SBNation) December 30, 2016

18. LeBron won SI Sportsman of the Year, but we all know he robbed the truly deserving candidate.

19. That reminds me! The best Christmas present I got was the NBA uploading the final three minutes of Game 7. This is the best series Ive ever watched, and an absolutely incredible finish.

20. LeBron James played 47 minutes. How did he still catch up and block Andre Iguodala!?

21. I once spent 47 minutes playing that little game on Chrome that comes up when your internet is down, but I dont think thats quite as impressive.

22. That wasnt about LeBron James. Neither is this one. The headline lied to you and I am very sorry.

23. The amount of minutes James has played is astonishing: at 32, hes on the verge of becoming the 33rd player with 40,000 minutes played. (h**l hit that in late January at his current rate.)

24. Add onto that 8,383 playoff minutes and a little more than 1,000 in international play.

25. All that, and the fewest number of games James has ever played in a season is 62 or, every game during the 2011-12 lockout season. Thats the fewest. Two seasons ago in Cleveland, James only played 69. He has played 75 games or more in every other season to date. His consistency is absurd.

26. No wonder hes already the No. 8 all-time scorer in the NBA. Hes on pace to pass Shaquille ONeal by late March this season.

27. That stat still blows my mind. Only seven people have currently scored more points in the NBA than James.

28. More like LeEighthInScoring James. (That nickname surprising did not show up on our studious rankings of the top 142 LeSomething James insults.)

29. If youre ever having a bad day, just remember you could have been LeBrons sleeves.

30. Can you tell Im running out of things to say? OK, its getting kind of obvious now. Um um well heres a LeBron video I really enjoy.

31. I didnt grow up watching Michael Jordan, so I wont argue with anyone who says hes better. But for me, LeBron James is the greatest, most consistent athlete Ive ever watched over the course of the past decade. Hes not my favorite necessarily, nor is he perfect in any way, and I get why some people dislike him. But its just a daily joy to watch him play the best sport out there.

32. Happy 32nd!

13 best clapbacks of 2016, from "delete your account" to Amber Rose"s s**t-shaming rebuke

How Did Amber Rose Get Her Booty? | TMZ TV

We all love a good clapback. It"s a comeback but with that extra oomph. And while 2016 may have been a literal trash fire for many reasons, this year has been a goldmine for people telling each other exactly how they feel with emphasis.

Ariana Grande in master clapback form Source:Giphy

Here are just a few reasons that 2016 will go down in history as the clappiest year in history. So put your hands together and enjoy this rundown.

Hillary Clintonto Donald TrumpHillary ClintonSource:Matt Rourke/AP

In June, Hillary Clinton like the rest of us had it up to here with Trump"s incessant tweeting. In response to a tweet mocking President Barack Obamafor endorsing Clinton, the Democratic nominee quote tweeted Trump and responded with three words that reverberated throughout the internet: Delete. Your. Account.

Amber Rose to PinkAmber RoseSource:Evan Agostini/AP

In the world of clapbacks, Amber Rose reigns as queen. In March, after singer Pink tweeted a subtly s**t-shaming quote on International Women"s day, rose responded with a defense of women who embrace their sexuality.

"d**n Pink we were all born n***d society sexualizes our breast and bodies," Rose wrote. "Pink, we"ve seen you d**n near n***d swinging from a rope (beautifully) but what"s the difference between a rope, a pole and a pic onInstagram? Classism."

Amber Rose to InstagramhomophobesAmber Rose"s sonSource:Instagram

Amber Rose"s clapbacks are probably strongest when people are coming for her own family. In August, Rose responded to homophobic Instagramcommenters who worried that her son would turn out to be gay because he was playing around in one of his mother"s wigs.

"Wow you people are so smart, huh?" Rose wrote. "Putting on a wig is gonna make a baby gay? Straight guys, do yourself a favor ... Put on a wig and see if [you"re] turned on by another man ... I"ll wait. And ladies, seriously grow the f**k up and educate yourselves."

Kim Kardashian-West to Taylor SwiftKim Kardashian-WestSource:Andy Kropa/AP

Clapbacks don"t always have to happen in the moment. In 2016, Kim Kardashian-West taught us all the value of the long-game clapback. In July, Kardashian spurred a Twitter firestorm when she released video of Taylor Swiftgiving the go-ahead to Kardashian-West"s husband, Kanye West, to use a lyric saying the two might one day have s*x. Previous to the video leak, Swift contended that she didn"t know about the lyric.

In the video, Swifttells Westto "go with whatever line you think is better." Swift also admitted the line is "obviously very tongue-in-cheek either way."

Megan Brown to sexist dude

Dealing with sexism is a constant and bloggerMegan Brown found the best way to fight it head on. When a guy she started talking to asked her to rattle off all the National League East baseball teams, she responded with wit and then made the conversation public.

"When meeting ordatingguys it"s common for them to attempt to quiz women to test if they "really" are sports fans," Brown toldUproxx. "It seemed pretty condescending plus it was something sobasic it was kind of insulting. Instead of responding with the teams (first instinct) or ignoring, I decided to have a little fun."

Kroger to gender-specific bathrooms

After North Carolina passed its controversial "bathroom bill" HB2, several private businesses responded by clarifying their own positions on who can use which bathroom. One Kroger grocery story in Athens, Georgia, said that it had unisex bathrooms "because sometimes gender specific toilets put others into uncomfortable situations." The sign outside the bathroom listed the groups the bathroom existed for, including parents with small children, parents with disabled children, those with a physical or mental disability and LGBTQpeople.

Constance Wu to Hollywood"s lack of diversitySource:Frazer Harrison/Getty Images

Fresh Off the Boat actress Constance Wu has been a fervent advocate for a greater diversity of faces and voices in Hollywood. When the trailer for Matt Damon"s upcoming film The Great Walldropped in July, the actress took to Twitter to give everyone a piece of her mind. In her own words, "Our heroes don"t look like Matt Damon."

Simone Biles v. body shamersSource:Eric Christian Smith/AP

Anyone looking for ways to deal with body shamers, look no further than Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles. After haters stormed an Instagrampost of hers, she responded with a tweet that reminded the trolls that it wasn"t about them. "You can judge my body all you want, but at the end of the day it"s my body," she wrote. "I love it & I"m comfortable in my skin."

Billboards to political hateMississippi billboardSource:TheGailyGrind/Twitter

2016 was the year of going big or going home. As such, people who had something to say about Islamophobia or homophobia used one of the biggest venues possible: public billboards. In Mississippi, a roadside billboard lamented the passing of an anti-LGBTreligious freedom bill, while a billboard in Michigan took aim at Trump"s rhetoric regarding Muslims.

Chrissy Teigento trolls

When trolls tried to tell Chrissy Teigenhow to parent, all because she went out to dinner with John in the first month after the birth of her child, Teigen shut it down.Teigen screenshotted the haters and shared the messages on Twitter. She also mocked the passive aggression of many of the commenters who were trying to offer unsolicited advice on mothering.

Teen to homophobic auntSource:Twitter

Proving that you need not be a celebrity or a billboard to clapback, with one text, a teen told off her homophobic aunt, who called the young girl a "f****t":

Don"t worry about it! I know what you"re like after a few bottles of wine. I can"t make Indie"s birthday I"m afraid, I have a huge lesbian orgy that day and me and the other faggots have been planning it for months. By the way how"s your divorce going? I saw uncle Lee with his new girlfriend, she"s 20 years younger than you right? Speak soon!Christine Blackmon to Dani MathersSource:Facebook

When Playboy playmate Dani Mathers took a Snapchatof a n***d woman at the gym, the n***d woman did not stay silent. In a post to her own Facebook, which has since turned private, Christine Blackmon, the woman from the gym wrote:

Here"s the deal you may have been a Playboy model, but not all of us work out to be "hot," some of us work out simply to honor the bodies we were given. That"s all that woman was trying to do and you violated her. Shame on you. I bet I could get hundreds of women to post their beautiful bodies and regardless of size, shape or color, they will ALL be more beautiful than the ugliness you showed in that post.

She added the hashtags #UnseeTHIS and #AllBodiesAreBeautiful at the end.

When Azealia Banksbeglanguage at former One Direction member Zayn Malik, 14-year-old actress Skai Jackson began to tweet about the incident. When Azealia tried to come for her, she got an earful of what Jackson had to say.

Banks made fun of Jackson"s body, to which Jackson said, "Worry about your career. Get one."

When Banks said she had never heard of Jackson and that she was "only a meme," Jackson wrote: "A meme with 2.3 million Instagramfollowers. My memesare more relevant than you."

Tennis superstar Serena Williams is marrying Reddit cofounder and Y Combinator partner alexis ohanian, according to a Thursday post she made on where else Reddit.

Williams and Ohanian have been in a relationship since late 2015, following her relationship with the musician Drake.

According to Williams, Ohanian whisked her away to Rome, to the place where they first met, before popping the question:

Williams" post was on "r/isaidyes," a community she apparently made just to share this story.

"And you made me the happiest man on the planet," Ohanian replied.

Ohanian founded Reddit with Steve Huffman, who is now serving as CEO of the link-sharing site, in 2005. Reddit was acquired by Wired publisher Cond Nast in 2006, but in 2011 it began operating as a separate subsidiary of Cond Nast parent company Advance Publications.

The couple have kept a relatively low profile though Williams made headlines in November 2015 when she chased down a man who allegedly stole her phone at San Francisco"s Mission Chinese restaurant while out with Ohanian.

The Women"sTennis Association tweeted out a rare photo of the couple together, along with their congratulations, after Williams made her announcement:

Rob Kardashian"s Latest Health Scare Reveals the Truth About Diabetes for Young Americans

EXCLUSIVE: Rob Kardashian Hospitalized After Falling "Off Track" With Monitoring His Diabetes

Rob Kardashian was released from the hospital Thursday after reportedly receiving treatment for diabetes, and his condition is more common for young people than you might think.

Kardashian was hospitalized with Type 2 diabetes last year, and has been attempting weight loss and a healthier lifestyle to combat it, according to CNN.

Both Type 1 and 2 diabetes conditions which inhibits the body"s ability to process sugar from food can have serious consequences, including heart disease, blindness, kidney failure, and amputations. It"s the seventh leading cause of death in the U.S.

"When you have diabetes, your body either doesn"t make enough insulin or can"t use its own insulin as well as it should," according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "This causes sugars to build up in your blood. This is why many people refer to diabetes as "sugar.""

People who have diabetes experience extreme thirst and hunger, weight changes, blurry vision, and extreme fatigue among other symptoms. The CDC estimates that there are 29 million people in the U.S. who have diabetes.

Millions of young people have diabetes.

kardashian, who is only 29 years old and has already been hospitalized for diabetes multiple times, is one of about four million Americans between the ages of 20-44 to suffer from the ailment. Further, about 208,000 children and adults younger than 20 have been diagnosed with diabetes.

These numbers clash with the typical depiction of diabetes sufferers presented in advertisements and public-service announcements think Wilford Brimley"s role as spokesman for Liberty Medicals diabetes testing supplies.

Why don"t people know they have diabetes?

Of the 29 million Americans the CDC says have diabetes, 21 million of them are diagnosed and another estimated 8 million don"t know they have it. Regular health care visits are key to a diagnosis. Before someone develops full blown diabetes they have a condition called pre-diabetes, which often doesn"t present any symptoms, but can be tested for.

"Pre-diabetes is a condition in which blood glucose levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to be classified as full-blown diabetes," according to the Joslin Diabetes Center.

If a health care provider doesn"t explain the seriousness of pre-diabetes effectively, a patient could fail to embrace the lifestyle changes capable of preventing the full-blown condition. If the person has sporadic health care visits, they could develop diabetes and not realize it.

The health care provider has to tell the patient that they dont meet the criteria for diabetes but they arent quite out of the woods, which can be a challenging concept to get across, Dr. Laura Rosella, a public health researcher at the University of Toronto, told the Huffington Post last year. This challenge could explain the low awareness.

How to watch Warriors vs. Mavs: Live stream, TV, matchup, line, odds, picks

Toronto Raptors vs Golden State Warriors • Full Game Highlights • Dec 28, 2016 • 2016-17 NBA Season

The Golden State Warriors will welcome back Harrison Barnes and Andrew Bogut to Oracle Arena for the second time Friday. That first reunion didn"t go that swimmingly for Barnes and Bogut as the warriors whipped the Dallas Mavericks 116-96 on Nov. 9.

How to watch

When: Friday, 10:30 p.m. ET

Who: Dallas Mavericks

Where: Oracle Arena

TV: League Pass

Streaming: League Pass

Line: Warriors (-18.5)

What to watch for

Golden State"s improving defense: Led by Defensive Player of the Year candidate Draymond Green and aided by Kevin Durant as a legitimate rim protector, the Warriors are now one of the league"s top defenses. Golden State is first overall in steals per game (9.5), blocks per game (6.3), opponent field goal percentage (42.9 percent) and opponent 3-point percentage (32.7 percent). The Warriors are also second in the league in defensive rating (101.0 points per 100 possessions) and defensive rebounds (36.2). Not good news for the Mavs, who have the 23rd-ranked offense and are playing on the second of a road back-to-back.

This could get ugly quick: Weary Dallas must guard against a quick start by the Warriors. This will be the seventh time Dallas is playing on the second night of a back-to-back and in those instances, Dallas has lost six times by an average of 14.5 points. Not only that, but the Mavs likely will be without J.J. Barea (Achilles). Bogut may skip the game because it"s the second of a back to back, and Dirk Nowtizki missed Thursday"s game because of illness and his status is unclear. That means Dallas will be playing a lot of their young guys like Dorian Finney-Smith.

Key matchup

Stephen Curry vs. Seth Curry: OK, this likely isn"t a true key matchup but the sibling rivalry (which really doesn"t exist) is the most entertaining one we got. Steph Curry had the better game the first time around, going for 24 points and six assists. Seth Curry struggled with shot and had 10 points and nine assists.

PICK: Warriors (-18.5). As mentioned above, Dallas is brutal on the second night of back-to-backs, so picking Golden State is easy.
