Columbia University Researchers and Applied Informatics Release ...

Living With A Chronic Illness: Endometriosis

New York, NY, January 06, 2017 --(PR.com)-- A team of researchers in the Department of Biomedical Informatics at Columbia University Medical Center have launched Phendo, a research study app for self-tracking and management of endometriosis symptoms. Developed by Applied Informatics, the observational research app is an initiative of Columbia University"s Citizen Endo project which is headed by data scientist and Associate Professor Noemie Elhadad.

Endometriosis affects 1 in 10 women and is estimated to create a $119 billionimpact on the US economy annually. The disease is caused when tissue called endometrium that normally lines the inside of the uterus grows outside of the uterus. Endometriosis is still considered a mysterious condition, and there are many ways in which the disease can present itself in patients. There is a disconnect between how doctors think about the disease and what patients experience on a daily basis.

The aim of the Phendo study is to bridge the gap between patient experience of endometriosis and clinical understanding of the disease. The Phendo app allows participants to track individual symptoms of endometriosis, and in the process, enable them to catalogue how the disease manifests for both patient"s self-management as well as for research and clinical understanding of the disease. The Phendo research study has been approved by the Columbia University IRB and participants consent to join the study through the app. Women who suspect they have endometriosis or have already been diagnosed with endometriosis are eligible as participants (other eligibility criteria include being over 13 years old and having had at least one menstrual period). Anyone who has had at least one menstrual period in their lifetime is eligible to use the app as a control participant.

The Citizen Endo team employs participatory design to engage patient users and build a meaningful tool for self-tracking using both moment and day-level surveys to document users" experience of living with the poorly understood chronic disease. This means that some features of the app are still under development and the team is actively seeking feedback from the app"s user community.

Phendo was built using Apple"s ResearchKit framework. The Phendo app is differentiated from other ResearchKit apps by capturing variables of a disease for which phenotypes are still unclear. The Citizen Endo team partnered with Applied Informatics for this project based on their extensive experience with Apple"s ResearchKit since launching America Walks, a cross platform ResearchKit enabled study app.

Currently, Dr. Elhadad says Phendo"s near 1,000 users are primarily based in the United States and New Zealand, with participants also joining from Canada, the U.K, Australia, Europe, and south pacific nations. The research team is looking into releasing versions in multiple languages to reflect the global impact of endometriosis.

Phendo is available for download on Apple Store. The app is available now in iOS, with an Android version expected sometime in 2017.

About Citizen Endo Project, Department of Biomedical Informatics, Columbia UniversityCitizen Endo (citizenendo.org) is a research project based out of Columbia University"s Department of Biomedical Informatics. The team, led by Dr. Elhadad, is engaging in multiple research studies under the Citizen Endo umbrella which focus on bridging the gap between patient experience of endometriosis and clinical understanding of the disease. One of these projects is the Phendo app.

About Applied InformaticsApplied Informatics is a NYC based Health IT company, founded in 2008 by two graduate students of Columbia University"s Department of Biomedical Informatics. Applied Informatics built the first walking study app, America Walks, available on both iOS and Android devices using Apple"s ResearchKit library and ResearchDroid, an Android version of ResearchKit. Army Hockey Wears Sweet Gold Jerseys for Fenway Park Game ...

Cindy"s latest Boston-area weather forecast

Army faced Bentley at Fenway Park as part of the Frozen Fenway series.

Army West PointArmy wore special gold jerseys for their Frozen Fenway series game vs. Bentley.

Jan 6, 2017 08:39

Army hockey doesn"t get many opportunities to make national headlines. Playing at Fenway Park changes that, as do cool new jerseys.

The Black Knights entered their Frozen Fenway game against Bentley with a 10-6-2 mark, including a first-place 9-4 mark (18 points) in the Atlantic Hockey Association. It was the program"s first outdoor game since 2012 and their first wearing gold jerseys this season.

Bentley ultimately prevailed in the chilly boston weather, 3-1, but at least West Point looked darn good cosmetically.

Suspect In Custody After Airport Shooting In Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Tiroteo en Aeropuerto de Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

At least five people were killed and several others injured in a shooting at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on Friday. Authorities say a suspect is in custody.

AUDIE CORNISH, HOST:

We have more now on the shooting this afternoon at the Fort Lauderdale International Airport in south Florida. A gunman killed five people and injured several others before law enforcement took him into custody. Reporter Kate Stein of member station WLRN has been reporting today from the airport. And Kate, can you start by giving us the details of how this happened?

KATE STEIN, BYLINE: So what we"ve heard from Broward County sheriff"s officers is that a gunman around - shortly before 1 o"clock Eastern this afternoon opened fire in Terminal 2 near the baggage claim. That individual was taken into custody pretty quickly by a Broward County sheriff"s officer and without any harm to the gunman. We have, as you said, five people killed. Eight, it sounds like, are wounded. And it"s been a pretty chaotic scene here this afternoon.

CORNISH: We know there have been some press conferences so far from the governor, from law enforcement. What more were they able to say?

STEIN: So the Broward County Sheriff"s Office said basically all the things that I just mentioned to you. Governor Rick Scott, the governor of Florida, came in just about an hour ago now, and he condemned this as a senseless act of violence. He"s very emphatic that he does not want this to happen again, especially in the wake of the Pulse nightclub shooting, anywhere in Florida.

CORNISH: Now, we know that you were able to get to the airport fairly soon after this happened. Can you describe what that scene was like?

STEIN: Yeah, it"s - I mean throughout the afternoon, we"ve seen SWAT teams with guns drawn leaving the parking garage. We"ve seen people running from the terminal to farther out on the runway. We"ve seen helicopters, you know, strafing the area. And we"ve seen just a lot of people, you know, upset outside the airport kind of waiting and watching. Right now passengers are still - well, would-be passengers are still locked down in the terminal.

CORNISH: Were you able to speak with any of them?

STEIN: I have talked with a couple of people outside the airport but no one inside so far.

CORNISH: Kate Stein, reporter of member station WLRN - she spoke to us from the Fort lauderdale international airport. and we just want to recap for you now what we know at this time. This gunman killed five people and injured at least 8 others before being taken into custody almost immediately by law enforcement. Officials say they believe he acted alone.

Now, so far, the person who has identified him - Florida Senator Bill Nelson says he is Esteban Santiago. The Pentagon has released a statement verifying that this 26-year-old was a National Guard soldier first serving in Puerto Rico and then Alaska. He"d also been a combat engineer and served in Iraq. We"ll have more on this story throughout the show.

NFL Playoffs 2017: Overtime Rules, Bracket and Postseason Format

2017 NFL PLAYOFF PREDICTIONS | FULL BRACKET! | YOU WON"T BELIEVE WHO I HAVE WINNING SUPER BOWL 51!

The first game on the NFL playoff schedule Saturday is the one that probably has the least flash and intrigue of the four on the schedule.

As a matter of fact, the Wild Card game between the Oakland Raiders and the Houston Texans might as well be the "Pity Bowl," because both teams could feel sorry for themselves as they limp into the playoffs.

The Raiders were having a brilliant season as they got ready to play in Week 16 against the Indianapolis Colts. They would win that game, but they suffered a huge blow when quarterback Derek Carr broke his fibula.

Backup quarterback Matt McGloin injured his trapezius in the finale against the Denver Broncos, and rookie quarterback Connor Cook will make his first start in this playoff game.

Cook, who was a star at Michigan State, was drafted in the fourth round last spring. He didn"t play at all this year until he came on in relief of McGloin and completed 14 of 21 passes against the Broncos.

Wild Card Weekend Oakland (5) at Houston (4) Jan. 7 4:35 p.m. ESPN/ABC Detroit (6) at Seattle (3) Jan. 7 8:15 p.m. NBC Miami (6) at Pittsburgh (3) Jan. 8 1:05 p.m. CBS N.Y. Giants (5) at Green Bay (4) Jan. 8 4:40 p.m. Fox

CBSSports.com

The pressure on a rookie quarterback making his first start normally shouldn"t be too great, but Cook will get no benefit of the doubt. It"s win or go home in the playoffs, and he has to figure out a way to get the Raiders a victory.

The Texans are in the same position they were a year ago, when they made the playoffs as the AFC South winners and hosted an AFC West team in the Wild Card round. That did not go well for them, as they dropped a 30-0 decision at home to the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Texans will try to avoid that fate with Brock Osweiler at quarterback. They had signed Osweiler during the offseason and had high hopes that he would become the elite quarterback the franchise has needed for years.

But Osweiler could not rise to the occasion and was replaced by Tom Savage late in the season. However,Savage suffered a concussion in Week 17 against the Tennessee Titans, so that means the Texans must turn back to Osweiler for this game.

Divisional Playoff Scenario NFC No. 3, 4 or 5 seed at Atlanta Jan. 14 4:35 p.m. Fox AFC No. 4, 5 or 6 seed at New England Jan. 14 8:15 p.m. CBS AFC No. 3, 4 or 5 at Kansas City Jan. 15 1:05 p.m. NBC NFC No. 4, 5 or 6 at Dallas Jan. 15 4:40 p.m. Fox

CBSSports.com

While neither team"s quarterback situation is ideal, it appears the Raiders may be in better shape at the position. Cook is an unknown who is getting his opportunity in a big game. He does not have a track record of failure like Osweiler. Cook really doesn"t have a track record at all.

He will forge the first part of his NFL identity here, and all he has to do is help his team win the game to be branded as a success. He doesn"t have to throw for 275 yards and three touchdowns. He just has to hold up to the pressure, read defenses, hand the ball off and throw a few short passes for his team to have a good chance at surviving and advancing.

Cook said he would go back to his college days with the Spartans when he led his team to memorable victories over power schools like Ohio State and Michigan to help prepare himself for his postseason start.

We played in some big-time games there. Going to try to take whatever I did there and put it to use on Saturday, Cook told Lindsay H. Jones of USA Today.

The other side of the AFC bracket will see the Miami Dolphins try to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers for the second time this season.

The first time came in Week 6, when the Dolphins pulled off the 30-15 upset at home. Winning in South Florida in October is one thing, but winning in Western Pennsylvania in January is quite another. Especially when the Steelers have Ben Roethlisberger, Le"Veon Bell and Antonio Brown.

The NFC Wild Card games include the Detroit Lions going to CenturyLink field to play the Seattle Seahawks Saturday night and the Green Bay Packers hosting the New York Giants Sunday afternoon.

The Seahawks still carry a dangerous reputation because they won Super Bowl XLVIII and then nearly defended their title the following year against the New England Patriots. However, they fell short in that game, and Pete Carroll"s team hasn"t been quite the same since. They may have enough to beat the slumping Lions, who have lost three games in a row, but don"t expect them to go much further.

The final game of the weekend stacks up to be the most memorable. The Giants won the Super Bowl following the 2007 and 2011 seasons, and in both of those years, they won playoff games at Green Bay.

Eli Manning was at the helm for the Giants in both of those games, and he gets another opportunity here. Manning has a fine postseason pedigree with two Super Bowl rings to his credit, but the reason the Giants made the playoffs this season was the improvement in their defense, which ranked dead last a year ago in yards allowed.

Newcomers Damon Harrison, Olivier Vernon and Janoris Jenkins have been stellar, and so has strong safety Landon Collins, who leads the team with 125 tackles.

The New York defense will have to be at or near its best if the Giants are going to slow down Aaron Rodgers and Co.

Green Bay comes into the game riding a six-game winning streak, and their offense is functioning at a high level.

The overtime rules in the playoffs are similar to the regular season, because each team"s offense must get a chance to possess the ball unless the first team to get it scores a touchdown.

However, the only difference is that a playoff game cannot end in a tie. If a regular-season game is tied after a 15-minute overtime period, the game is over and goes into the record book as a tie.

In the postseason, an overtime game will go on until a winner is determined. Any score, ofcourse, will suffice after each team has had a possession.

The Miami Dolphins and the Kansas City Chiefs played the longest game in NFL history following the 1971 season. Miami edged the homestanding Chiefs 27-24 on Garo Yepremian"s 37-yard field goal in the second overtime period.

The game was the last played in Kansas City"s Municipal Stadium and was one of the most memorable in NFL history.

22 Savage Will Change His Name If 21 Savage Knocks Him Out - XXL

22 Savage "Jumpin" (WSHH Exclusive - Official Music Video)
Instagram/YouTube

22 Savage is willing to change his name, but only if 21 Savage can knock him out. 22 Savage is angling for a fight with his doppelganger in a blatant attempt to capitalize off the boxing match between Chris Brown and Soulja Boy.

Who wanna see 21 get knocked out by BIG 22, he wrote on Twitter. If he win Ill change my name.

Baton Rouges MacArthur Johnson, who first made a name for himself on the Vine app, confused many last year when he took on the moniker of 22 Savage. A similar look and style turned 22 Savage from a parody into a carbon copy of 21 Savage.

I just felt like jacking him, 22 said in an interview. Im really a savage out here. Im really in the slums. Im in the trenchesWhat people dont understand is that underneath this funny, its really real. Were in the streets. Im a street n***a trying to make it out anyway I can.

21 Savage has largely dismissed 22 savage. the atlanta rapper expressed some disdain for his copycat last month, calling 22 Savage a sucka.

Shout out to all my real n****s in Baton Rouge. I know yall didnt raise a n***a to d**k ride another n***a to get on, he said. How you gone beef with a n***a you want to be like? Sucka.

While many observers may think that 22 Savage is foolish to test 21 Savage, the Baton Rouge rapper is not just a jokester. 22 Savage caught a murder charge for his role in a deadly shooting that took place in May 2016.

"Emerald City": TV Review

"Emerald City": Meet Dorothy

There are probably people in the world who don"t like remakes, or the "reimagining" of classics. But are there really any people left in that camp when it comes to The Wizard of Oz, which has been a classic movie, a not very good modern movie, a play, a musical, a TV series and more? Friday night, L. Frank Baum"s books return as, well, a kind of weirdly dystopian tale that seems like it wants to be on HBO but ends up on NBCand that description makes it sound better than it really is.

Meaning, if someone wanted to make the bleakest Wizard of Oz eversay aCormac McCarthy versionwhere there is no happy ending and Dorothy just bleeds out somewhere in a Kansas alley as the credits roll, I would watch that. But NBC"s Emerald City is going for something with more right angles than a musical but less heft and depth than an FX drama and runs into this odd middle ground where the silly merges with the violent, fumbling the tone on down the Yellow Brick Road (which here is made of opium).

Anyway, it"s kind of a mess but your mileage may vary, especially since the first few hours are enough to keep you trying to figure out the mysterious direction Shaun Cassidy, David Shulner, Matthew Arnold and Josh Friedmanwho developed the 10-hour seriesare going in, led there by director Tarsem Singh (Mirror Mirror).

And at this point in the history of the Wizard of Oz, trying to figure out the latest reinterpretation is half the fun. This is a story that"s been worked over pretty hard through the years. It seems the intent with this NBC version was to pluck Dorothy out of Kansas and plop her down in... Westeros? Yes, there"s a half-baked Game of Thrones feel to emerald city in parts, and then when you"re adjusting to that there"s a pinch of w***y Wonka that seems a bit out of place as well before it all shifts to corners where the writers seem to be in a battle to make it more off-kilter as they go: Let"s have the Mistress of the Eastern Wood (Florence Kasumba) blow her brains out; the Wicked Witch of the West (Ana Ularu) be a brothel owner and addict; andGlinda of the North (Joely Richardson) appearing to think she"s inLord Of the Rings.

And then there"s Dorothy (Adria Arjona), who seems to be in a network cop procedural. On the other hand there"s a b-story about sexual identity which is kind of surprising and interesting and only slightly creepy.

Again, on some level Emerald Cityis just out there enough to keep you watching and maybe at this point in time and on network television there"s a certain need to be a ragtag curiosity to keep people coming back each week (it premieres with two full episodes, which is a bit daring in itself these days).

It"s hard to fault Emerald City for its ambition and creativity, but there"s a surprising level of violence here that only barely gets undercut by moments of silliness (and it was hard to figure out early on if the Wizard, played by Vincent D"Onofrio, was supposed to be silly or sinister). Maybe the tonal shifts were necessary because so many fingers appear to be in this reimagined pie.

There are creative tweaks to all the familiar characterssome you"ll see coming, some you"ll be amused by, some you"ll smile over and others you"ll groan overand if marching down the yellow poppy-pollen road of opium, through the Westeros hills and toward a 10-hour story that might pay off with some visual treats is the kind of TV journey you"re up for, by all means head to Emerald City. If not, you"ve still got L. Frank Baum"s books, Judy Garland"s movie version and Wicked if you want, so your options are extensive.

Or you could just choose an unfamiliar story that"s on TVI hear there are hundreds of those out there.
