ATLANTA A new duct sizing calculator from ASHRAE and the Air Distribution Institute (ADI) allows HVAC air distribution system designers to more accurately size ducts, especially flex ducts under varying amounts of compression, based on research results.
The Duct Size Calculator is a quick reference tool for approximating duct sizes and equivalent sizes of sheet metal duct vs. flexible duct. the calculator uses information from ASHRAE Research Project 1333, HVAC Duct Efficiency Measures, and was developed with funding support from ASHRAE and ADI. ASHRAE Technical Committee 5.2, Duct Design, sponsored the project.
While the calculator resembles a wheel similar to those used during the days of slide rules, it incorporates three new fields for equivalent duct sizing, said Chris Van Rite, developer of the calculator. These new fields help demonstrate the significant loss of airflow due to improper installation of flexible ducts.
The calculator includes fields for 4, 15, and 30 percent compression in flexible ducts. Van Rite notes that the calculations used to create these size references are based on straight line compression as performed in the laboratory on a flat surface.Field installed flexible ducts with bends, kinks and excessive lengths will have additional resistance, which will result in diminished airflow.
The use of this tool allows duct designers to account for less than optimum installation and gives a more accurate design to installed performance correlation, Van Rite said.
ASHRAE research has quantified the effects of compression (not stretching) flexible duct, which increases the roughness and, therefore, the friction loss inside a flexible duct. Airflow testing follows protocols prescribed by ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 120-2008 Method of Testing to Determine Flow Resistance of HVAC Ducts and Fittings.
Testing at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and at Texas A&M University along with data analysis by Tennessee Technical University has quantified the adverse effects of compression on airflow. Those correlations agreed closely with the equations published in Chapter 21 of the 2013 ASHRAE Handbook, Fundamentals, so the equations were used to create the new calculator, according to Van Riteaid.
The Duct Size Calculator features inch-pound (I-P) units on one side and the International System of Units (SI) on the other.

Ebert, 48, mainly works alone in his home office, though he sometimes hires developers to help with big projects. He is married, but preferred not to discuss his personal life.
"I enjoy solving problems and I"ve always been financially inclined since I was a kid," said Ebert, who declined to disclose how much he makes from Dinkytown.net. "I like to keep the focus on one thing and do that one thing really well."
Over the past few years, he has reworked his calculators so they function smoothly on mobile devices. He estimates he builds a new financial tool about every other month for clients. All of his calculators are available for free at Dinkytown.net and he personally answers user feedback by email.
His most popular calculator is one that automatically generates an estimated amortization schedule for a mortgage.
"What our members like about the calculator is that it helps them quickly figure out how much house they can afford, which is essential when you take out a mortgage," said Michael Toner, who manages digital channels for Navy Federal. "Online calculators are valuable to our efforts to improve financial literacy among our members and one of the most popular parts of our website and mobile app."
Ebert"s favorite tool is the retirement planner because it gives one a solid estimate and only requires users to enter in eight numbers.
Not all of Ebert"s creations are hits. His least-used tool determines the gain or loss if you have repossessed personal property from a deferred payment sale. "It is a great calculator, but it isn"t popular due to its extremely specialized audience," he said.
(Reuters) - Yahoo Inc said Monday that it would rename itself altaba Inc and Chief Executive Officer Marissa Mayer would step down from the board after the closing of its deal with Verizon Communications Inc.
Yahoo has a deal to sell its core internet business, which includes its digital advertising, email and media assets, to Verizon for $4.83 billion.
The terms of that deal could be amended - or the transaction may even be called off - after Yahoo last year disclosed two separate data breaches; one involving some 500 million customer accounts and the second involving over a billion.
Verizon executives have said that while they see a strong strategic fit with Yahoo, they are still investigating the data breaches.
Five other Yahoo directors would also resign after the deal closes, Yahoo said in a regulatory filing on Monday. (http://bit.ly/2iXrbwn)
The remaining directors will govern Altaba, a holding company whose primary assets will be a 15 percent stake in Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba Group Holding Ltd and 35.5 percent stake in Yahoo Japan.

Soon, the Ministry of External Affairs will have a presence on linkedin. it has accepted a recommendation by a panel to study how social media can be leveraged to connect with the diaspora. Currently, the MEA is active on Twitter, WhatsApp and Facebook.
Suggestions have also been made for the ministry to be present on Snapchat as well to connect with the young Indian diaspora. The MEA has also been told to study the demographic and psychographic analysis of its followers, and also target the 65-plus age group that is now getting familiar with social media platforms. The 65-plus group could be excellent ambassadors for the country, the panel felt.
Donald Trump"s son-in-law Jared kushner is expected to be named a senior adviser to the president, multiple news outlets report.
AUDIE CORNISH, HOST:
President-elect Donald Trump announced today plans to name his son-in-law Jared Kushner as a senior adviser in the White House. Kushner and his wife, Ivanka Trump, were key players during the presidential campaign, and he"s one of the president-elect"s most trusted confidants. He"s also CEO of his own family"s multibillion-dollar real estate business. And by formally joining the Trump administration, Kushner brings yet another set of potential conflicts of interest to the White House.
NPR"s Scott Horsley joins us now. And Scott, we know Trump was already planning to hold a news conference later this week to discuss plans to distance himself from his own family"s Trump Organization. So what sort of wrinkle could this Kushner appointment add?
SCOTT HORSLEY, BYLINE: Audie, this could be a very big wrinkle. We"ve talked about how the Trump Organization"s sprawling business interests, including in foreign countries, could complicate the incoming president"s decision-making. Now, the Kushner companies which Jared Kushner took over after his father went to prison for tax evasion, has its own spider web of financial threats.
Just to give you one example, The New York Times ran a lengthy story over the weekend about how Kushner has been negotiating with China"s Anbang company to help bankroll the renovation of his firm"s signature Manhattan skyscraper. Now, Anbang has close ties to the Chinese government. Its chairman is married to the granddaughter of Deng Xiaoping, and it carries some red flags for the U.S. government. Just to cite one - after Anbang bought the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York, President Obama stopped staying there during his official visits.
Now, Jared Kushner thinks he can navigate these potential conflicts. He"s hired Jamie Gorelick, the former deputy attorney general from the Clinton administration, to help him. And Gorelick tells NPR that Kushner plans to play no active role in his company"s operations. He"s going to sell off some of his ownership in that company, and he"s planning to steer clear of White House decisions that involve those assets he doesn"t sell.
JAMIE GORELICK: He is being treated and will be treated as any other individual who goes into public service. We, on his behalf, have consulted with the Office of Government Ethics, and we believe we have a very good path for bringing him into compliance with those rules.
CORNISH: There"s also a rule against government officials hiring family members, and he"s the president-elect"s son-in-law. Can you talk about how those rules would or would not apply here?
HORSLEY: Yeah, the anti-nepotism statute says you can"t put family members to work in a government agency, but there appears to be a loophole for the West Wing because the White House is not considered a government agency. At least that"s the argument that Kushner and his team will be making.
Now, it"s not a slam dunk, but that argument was tested a little bit back in the 1990s when former President Clinton tapped his wife, Hillary, to lead the health care task force. That was challenged in court at the time, and at least one federal judge agreed the West Wing is exempt from the anti-nepotism statute. Now, I might add, the choice of Jared Kushner to be a senior adviser is not subject to Senate confirmation.
CORNISH: Before I let you go, help us understand why Trump wants Kushner in the White House with him.
HORSLEY: Well, he is, as you said in the intro, a very trusted confidant to the president-elect. It"s kind of funny because on the surface, these two could hardly be more different. Kushner, who turns 36 tomorrow, generally avoids the limelight, although his face has been on a lot of magazine covers since the election. He comes from a family of Democrats. He"s an Orthodox Jew. In fact, at one point, Donald Trump suggested Kushner might play a role in Middle East peace negotiations.
For all their differences, though, Kushner is intensely loyal to his father-in-law. He stood by Trump during some of the very darkest moments on the campaign trail, and both of these men are fiercely devoted to their families.

Stokes County Schools Superintendent Brad Rice found an unusual way to announce that district"s closing of schools on Monday.
Rice wrote a parody song of Josh Turners Your Man to let Stokes County students know that about the snow day.
I made the video to have some fun and to try to connect to my students, Rice told WGHP/FOX8.
The video was posted to the Stokes County Schools Facebook page on Sunday evening where it had about 20,000 views as of about 7 p.m.
Rice became superintendent last July and had worked with Asheboro City Schools prior to that.
Parts of the Triad saw at least eight inches of snow on Saturday, the areas first real snowfall of the season. Roadway conditions remain icy and dangerous, especially on secondary roads.
Several other schools districts in the Piedmont are also closed including Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools, Guilford County Schools,Alamance-Burlington Schools, Davidson County Schools and Randolph County Schools.
