A huge hit? Edwin McCain couldn"t ask for more

I Could Not Ask For More - Edwin McCain Official Music Video

Some musicians gripe about their big hit. They hate being defined by just one song, and they hate having to perform it every night of their lives.

not edwin mccain.

heres how the rootsy singer-songwriter feels about his biggest hit, Ill Be.

Thank G*d! he says and laughs.

Because McCain knows the alternative. Without his soaring 1998 ballad, he probably wouldnt be performing Friday at Southwest Florida Performing Arts Center in Bonita Springs. In fact, he probably wouldnt have a music career at all.

McCain, 47, remembers getting that fateful call from the record label president. It changed his life forever.

I was SECONDS away from getting dropped (from the label), McCain says. He told me, Listen, you better come up with something great. And I was like, "OK, give me a minute. Hang on, Im coming. Ill get you something good."

I had this idea and I put it all together, and I felt like it had a shot.

That song, of course, was Ill Be, and it shot all the way to No. 5 on Billboard"s Hot 100 chartand eventually became a staple at weddings everywhere. Almost two decades later, the song still gets covered on YouTube and in singing competitions such as American Idol.

The longevity of that song has just been staggering, McCain says. It still gets 5,000 spins a week nationwide on radio and the online streams are insane!

People send me videos of people doing it on YouTube, all these kids out there singing it, and Im like, You werent even born then! Its awesome.

McCain went on to have a long and critically acclaimed career after that, including the 1999 hit I Could Not Ask For More which, just like "I"ll Be," gets performed at weddings a lot. And McCain says hes just fine with that.

Probably as a 25-year old, I would have pouted a little bit and said, Well, I dont want to just be known for singing wedding songs, he says. But as a 47-year-old musician, I go, Oh my G*d, how lucky am I that people still use these songs atweddings! Because I still have a job.

And every time wedding season rolls around, its like I get a whole new life. Its crazy!

Thats why McCain doesnt understand musicians who complain about their huge hit.

Theyre p****d about it! he says. Its so myopic. Its so shortsighted. Because the truth is, the alchemy that has to come together to create a hit song, the seemingly thousands of insignificant coincidences that all have to line up perfectly for that to happen, are so far beyond the artists control.

"And yet, somehow we still manage to believe that we had something to do with it. Authorship is part of it, performance is part of it, but theres this huge component of timing and luck and all of these other individuals that were dedicated and working toward achieving that impossible thing of a hit song.

Edwin McCain(Photo: Special to The News-Press)

Thats why McCain says h**l always be grateful for Ill Be. Without it, who knows where he"d be or what he"d be doing today?

Ive always looked at it like absolute fortune, he says. I joke in my shows: It would be like having a winning lottery ticket and your big house and walking by it every day and going, Stupid lottery ticket! Dumb lottery ticket that made me financially independent!

What to know from Cavs" 118-115 overtime loss to Spurs: "Hey, Joe!"

Cleveland Cavaliers vs Sacramento Kings - Full Game Highlights | Jan 13, 2017 | 2016-17 NBA Season

CLEVELAND, Ohio --Following the Cavs" 118-115 loss to the San Antonio Spurs in overtime, fans asked cleveland.com beat writer Joe Vardon:

  • How much do the cavs" need a backup point guard? (Here"s a hint, their second unit was eviscerated Saturday night, 17-2 to start the second quarter and 12-1 to begin the fourth.)
  • Will Iman Shumpert start in the playoffs, given how well he"s played with the Cavs" starters? He scored 11 points against the Spurs on 4-of-8 shooting.
  • Are the Cavs missing J.R. Smith more than anyone cares to admit? Hey, the Spurs were missing Pau Gasol and Tony Parker and got the job done.

Holiday Open House to kick off Christmas season

Packers vs. Falcons | Aaron Rodgers vs. Matt Ryan | NFL Conference Championship Previews

Instead of spending the first official day of the Christmas season inside busy, cramped chain stores, the Oxford Square Alliance is inviting everyone to the Square for a fun day of crafts, carriage rides, pictures with Santa himself and of course, some great shopping at local stores.

A long-standing tradition for the alliance, the Open House features a host of family-friendly activities and events to usher in the holiday season.

We are really excited to be able to present the Holiday Open House again this year, says Mark Huelse, president of the Oxford Square Alliance and co-owner of Something Southern. The Egg Bowl will be the following day, so we are encouraging people to come early and enjoy the festivities.

The Open House will feature a free digital photo shoot with Santa from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with holiday art activities including an ornament decoration station and a booth to create holiday postcards. Horse-drawn carriage rides around the Square will begin at 2 p.m. and last until 6 p.m.

Huelse said the alliance decided to extend the hours for photos with Santa this year. In the past, it ended at 4 p.m.

There was always a long line and Santa helps with lighting the city Christmas tree so is still on the Square anyway during that time, Huelse said.

Carolers from Oxford Civic Chorus will perform in front of City Hall from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.

When Santa arrives to the Square, he will land his antique sleigh on the lawn of the Lafayette County Courthouse where citizens young, old and in between can sit and take photos.

The annual Christmas tree lighting in front of City Hall will be at 6 p.m. Immediately following there will be a Square Dollars raffle with $500 worth of gift certificates being awarded. Shoppers earn raffle tickets while shopping in the stores around the Square on Friday. You must be present at the drawing to win.

Have someone on your list who is hard to buy for? Square Dollars can also be purchased, like gift certificates, which can be used at any of the retail shops and restaurants that are members of the Oxford Square Alliance. Square Dollars can be purchased at Visit Oxford on the Square all year long.

Belles & Beaus and Cannon Motors are the 2016 presenting sponsors of the Holiday Open House and Oxford Magazine and Invitation Oxford will be this years Square sponsors.

Oxford Makers Market Handmade & Homegrown Black Friday Spectacular event will also be taking place on the courthouse lawn where dozens of local vendors will be selling a wide variety of goods.

For more information on the Holiday Open House visit the Oxford Square Alliance on Facebook.

Spurs hold off Cavs 118-115 in overtime

Relive Cavs" Wild Comeback and Amazing 4th Quarter!

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A scoreless two minutes, a bad turnover, and two timely Spurs shots sunk the Cavs in overtime Saturday night.

Kawhi Leonard scored a career-high 41 points to LeBron James" 29 and the Spurs defeated Cleveland 118-115 in what was obviously a compelling game, given its score, length, and the two teams competing.

The Cavs (30-12) scored one basket in the final 2:12 of overtime. Trailing by three and coming out of a timeout, James threw a pass to no one in the corner with 24.2 seconds left for his seventh turnover.

The Spurs took the lead for good on Patty Mills" 3-pointer with 1:52 to go. LaMarcus Aldridge"s jumper with 38 seconds remaining put them up 116-113.

After a layup by Kyrie Irving, James tied Leonard up for a jump ball with 13 seconds left and appeared to have won the tip (James later said Leonard won it; Love thought it was the other way around) but Love"s effort to save it from going out of bounds went straight to Leonard, who raced ahead for what should"ve been a clinching dunk.

But LaMarcus Aldridge missed two free throws with .9 seconds to go and gave the Cavs another chance. But Love"s 3-point attempt at the buzzer was no good.

Irving scored all of the Cavs" eight points in overtime and finished with 29 total. Love, playing for the first time since injuring his back in the first half against Golden State Monday, scored 13 points with 11 rebounds. Tristan Thompson added 14 points and 12 boards, and Iman Shumpert contributed 11 points.

This was Leonard"s sixth consecutive game of 30 or more points. Aldridge added 16. David Lee and Dejounte Murray, filling in for the injured Pau Gasol and Tony Parker, each scored 14 points.

The Cavs committed 18 turnovers for 19 points, the Spurs had 14 turnovers for 14 points. Just as costly, the Cavs missed 10 of 22 free-throw attempts.

This was Tyronn Lue"s 83rd game as head coach, meaning he"s coached a full season. His second full season started just like the first.

The Cavs lost the first game of Lue"s tenure against the Bulls, which was also ABC"s first Saturday night game. Things turned out OK at the end of that year.

The Cavs held the Spurs scoreless over the final 2:45 in regulation to forge overtime. James made three free throws and a 30-foot 3-point bomb to tie it. Leonard scored 12 points in the period, but missed his last five shots. After Leonard missed a jumper with 13.4 seconds left, James" step-back 3 that could"ve won it at the buzzer rattled out.

The Spurs opened the fourth quarter on a 12-1 run and the Cavs committed four turnovers over the first four minutes.

Come to think of it, Cleveland"s reserve unit -- which starts the second and fourth quarters with James -- struggled all night. The Spurs opened the second period on a 17-2 spurt. The Cavs closed periods well, up until overtime anyway. They won the final 4:42 of the second period, 14-6, and finished the third with five points in 33 seconds for a five-point lead.

James and Leonard each played 46 minutes. Irving logged 41.

NEXT: the cavs hit the road again, but for only one game against the New Orleans Pelicans Monday at 8 p.m.
