Cervical cancer death rates are much higher than thought, study says

Seven Cervical Cancer Early Signs
Black women are dying from cervical cancer at a rate 77% higher than previously thought, and white women are dying at a rate 47% higher, according to a study published in the journal Cancer on Monday.

The study found that previous estimates of cervical cancer death rates didn"t account for women who had their cervixes removed in hysterectomy procedures, which eliminates the risk of developing the cancer.

"Prior calculations did not account for hysterectomy because the same general method is used across all cancer statistics," said Anne Rositch, assistant professor of epidemiology at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore and lead author of the study.

That method is to measure cancer"s impact across a total population without accounting for factors outside of gender, she said.

There were about 12,990 new cases of cervical cancer in the United States last year and 4,120 cervical cancer deaths, according to the National Cancer Institute."A better understanding of the magnitude"For the study, researchers analyzed data on cervical cancer deaths in the United States, from 2000 to 2012, from the National Center for Health Statistics and the National Cancer Institute"s Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results databases.

The data were limited to only 12 states in the country, but the researchers noted that the data still provided a nationally representative sample of women.

Then, the researchers collected data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System on how many women in 2000 to 2012, 20 and older, reported ever having a hysterectomy. They used that data to adjust the cervical cancer deaths rates.

Before the adjustment, the data showed that the cervical cancer killed about 5.7 out of 100,000 black women and 3.2 per 100,000 white women. After adjusting for hysterectomies, the rate was 10.1 per 100,000 black women and 4.7 per 100,000 white women.

The data showed that the racial disparity seen in cervical cancer death rates for black and white women was underestimated by 44% when hysterectomies were not taken into account.

"We can"t tell from our study what might be contributing to the differences in cervical cancer mortality by age and race," Rositch said. "Now that we have a better understanding of the magnitude of the problem, we have to understand the reasons underlying the problem."

cervical cancer is highly preventable in the United States because of the availability of screening tests and a vaccine to prevent human papillomavirus, or HPV, which can cause cervical cancer, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"Racial disparity may be explained by lack of access or limited access to cervical cancer screening programs among black women when compared to whites," said Dr. Marcela del Carmen, a gynecologic oncologist at the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center, who was not involved in the new study.

"This gap and disparity need to be addressed with initiatives focusing on better access to prevention or screening programs, better access to HPV vaccination programs and improved access and adherence to standard of care treatment for cervical cancer," she said.

The new findings add to the current understanding of cervical cancer"s impact on different communities, said Dr. John Farley, a practicing gynecologic oncologist and professor at Creighton University School of Medicine at St. Joseph"s Hospital and Medical Center in Arizona.

"It lets us know that there is substantial work to do to investigate and alleviate the racial minority disparity in cervical cancer in the US," said Farley, who was not involved in the study but co-authored an editorial about the new findings in the journal Cancer on Monday.

"Those who get cancer, many times, do not have access to screening," he said.

Even though cervical cancer mortality rates are higher than previously thought, Farley said that he thinks the current screening recommendations for cervical cancer are still adequate. However, he added, more women should have access to screenings and other preventive measures.

Rositch said, "It may be that some women are not obtaining screening according to our current guidelines, not necessarily that guideline-based care is insufficient."

How to prevent and screen for cervical cancerThe American Cancer Society recommends that women begin cervical cancer screenings at age 21 by having a Pap test every three years. Then, beginning at 30, women should have a Pap test combined with a HPV test every five years. However, the recommendations are not universal among all expert groups.Symptoms of cervical cancer tend to not appear until the cancer has advanced, which is why screening and HPV vaccinations are urged.

"We have a vaccine which can eliminate cervical cancer, like polio, that is currently available, and only 40% of girls age 13 to 17 have been vaccinated," said Farley, co-author of the editorial. "This is an epic failure of our health care system in taking care of women in general and minorities specifically."

Women over 65 might not need to continue screening if they don"t have a history of cervical cancer or negative Pap test results, according to the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Each year, about 38,793 new cases of cancer are found in parts of the body where HPV is often found. The virus has been linked not only to cervical cancer but to cancers of the v***a, v****a, p***s, a**s or throat. A study published in the journal JAMA Oncology last week found that among a group of 1,868 men in the United States, about 45% had genital HPV infections and only about 10% had been vaccinated.

"Male HPV vaccination may have a greater effect on HPV transmission and cancer prevention in men and women than previously estimated," the researchers wrote in that study.

BET didn"t skim on authenticity for "The New Edition Story"

New Edition - I"m Still In Love With You

When BET announced in 2015 that its first scripted miniseries would take on the iconic singing group New Edition, the excitement inR&B circles was instant. The concept of a movie centering on the rise, fall and resurrection of one of the most iconic and influential singing groups in soul music had the potential to be a true crowd-pleaser.

But along with the buzz came the questions: Would the group, particularly its most high-profile and controversial member Bobby Brown, be involved? Would the project have the rights to the hit songs? Would it cover the good, the bad and the ugly?

Producers of the film, particularly considering the groups continuing popularity, felt the pressure. During the filming of a relatively innocuous winter scene last summer at a Hollywood recording studio, they were visibly concerned about how The New Edition Story would be received by the groups loyal fans and viewers especially the hard-to-please Black Twitter community.

Thats the real Siskel andEbert, executive producer Jesse Collins said, referencing the classic film critic duo.Theres a lot of pressure. We just tried to focus on telling the story. Hopefully, people will love it.

As he talked, technicians worked on a scene that explored one of the key moments in the groups roller-coaster journey arriving to work on its seminal Heart Break album, the first to feature Johnny Gill after Browns acrimonious exit, with powerhouse producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.)

The anxiousness surrounding the film was understandable. Biopics, especially made-for-TV projects, have met with intense public scrutiny and skepticism.Aspate ofbiopics centered on black artists, including Whitney Houston, Aaliyah, TLC and N.W.A,were metwith mixed reaction, controversy and even litigation.

Nevertheless, BET not only moved forward, but aimed high with an ambitious, three-night miniseries on the group, which is still so beloved it can pack arenas more than 30 years after its debut. The musical drama premieresTuesday and concludes Thursday.

Getting the story right was the key consideration for those involved. All six members of the group Brown, Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Ronnie DeVoe, Johnny Gill and Ralph Tresvant served as producers, as did New Editions longtime manager and choreographer, Brooke Payne.

Maurice Starr, who Svengalied them to pop stardom with bubblegum R&B hitshe crafted, consulted, while Jam, Lewis and Kenny Babyface Edmonds, superstar producers who previously worked with the group, collectively or on solo projects handled music for the film.

New Edition sold millions of records, catapulted Brown, Gill and Tresvant to solo success and launched two splinter groups, Heads of State and Bell Biv DeVoe, whose megahit Poison remains an earworm 26 years after its release.

But for all its tightly choreographed moves and smooth soulful harmonies NSync, Backstreet Boys and 98 Degrees owe them some credit years of interpersonal drama underscored the success. Tensions raged over lead singing parts and bitter rivalries. Brown eventually was voted out over his unpredictable behavior. Acontentious reunion tour exploded with an onstage brawl.

The film exposed the tumultuousjourney, which group members were able to confrontwith a sense of understanding and insight.

Were at the point in our lives personally and professionally where we feel like we can tell the story and really open it up, Bell said. We prided ourselves on keeping our dirty laundry, so to speak, to ourselves. It was challenging opening up old wounds and talking about things we havent discussed.

Despite having not released material since 2004, New Edition continuesto perform (with and without Brown). Its members still put out music on their own spinoff hip-hop outfit Bell Biv DeVoe soon will release its first album in nearly 16 years.

This is a story of brotherhood that speaks to our community, Bell said. It brought a lot of clarity to us as friends. We held onto it for a while, and Im glad because I believe that its really the right time for us.

2017 Fantasy Baseball Draft Prep: Dodgers team outlook improved with Logan Forsythe, but it all comes down to ...

Juan Perez throws out Logan Forsythe going for third June 17 2013

The Los Angeles Dodgers always seem to find a way, don"t they?

Like those dinos-gone-wild on Jurassic Park, they"ll come through with a berth even when you think they aren"t engineered to do so.

Draft Prep Guide

It"s a credit to front office honcho Andrew Friedman, who has yet to fully embrace the big-market mentality after leaving the Rays in his rear-view mirror, instead using the Dodgers" considerable resources to pile up depth. That depth played no small role in last year"s success, when the Dodgers needed 15 starting pitchers to navigate the 162-game minefield.

But Friedman discovered first-hand what money can do for an organization this offseason. Facing the possibility of a fractured nucleus, he overcame his baser instincts in order to stop the bleeding before it started, handing multi-year deals to ace closer Kenley Jansen , slugging third baseman Justin Turner and curiosity Rich Hill .

"If you"re always rational about every free agent, you will finish third on every free agent," he said.

Well, it"s true.

And so the same Dodgers who came within two wins of the World Series return mostly intact. They"re down one prospect in Jose De Leon , who they spun to fill an immediate need at second base (one big-market measure Friedman has often employed), but two of their highest-profile graduates from the last two years, Joc Pederson and Julio Urias , are both on an upward trajectory and could become a stable part of that nucleus this season. And the highest-profile of all the graduates, Corey Seager , is more than ready to claim the superstar title from Adrian Gonzalez after a near MVP-winning Rookie of the Year season, bailing out the precarious Yasiel Puig in the process.

As for the pitching staff, Clayton Kershaw represents the biggest singular advantage in the game, aside from Mike Trout , but after battling a bulging disc in the second half last year, he"s not the sure thing he normally is. Hill is an even more dramatic risk/reward case. In fact, Kenta Maeda might be the one "safe" pitchers the Dodgers have, and he had trouble throwing six innings at the time.

But once again, they have the depth to survive whatever misfortunes arise, with Brandon McCarthy , Alex Wood , Hyun-Jin Ryu , Brock Stewart and Ross Stripling all currently on the outside looking in.

2017 projected pitching staff

Can we trust the Dodgers aces to stay healthy?

That"s the million dollar question and what will ultimately determine whether they run away with the NL West. If Kershaw and Hill are both healthy, it"s the best 1-2 punch in baseball.

The concern over Kershaw may be overstated, which is only fair when the price of admission is a first-round pick. He did, however, return to post a similar ERA and WHIP in five regular-season starts. He didn"t pitch as deep into games and didn"t strike out hitters at the same rate, but you could easily attribute those issues to rust, especially since he improved in both respects in the postseason.

But back injuries have been known to linger, and it"s not like he had this one surgically corrected. He"s probably fine, but that kernel of doubt makes him a no-go ahead of first-round caliber hitters like Manny Machado or Anthony Rizzo. Otherwise, he"d be in the conversation to go No. 1 overall.

The concern over Hill is probably overblown as well, seeing as it was a pesky blister and not something structural that kept derailing him last year, but then health isn"t the only concern with him. Nothing about the first 35 years of his life would have suggested he could do what he has done in his past 24 starts, but considering it was spread over two seasons, my skepticism is waning. His advanced age also leads me to believe the Dodgers are going to ride him as hard as his epidermis allows them, making him a potential bargain outside the top 30.

Are the training wheels coming off Julio Urias?

He"s only 20, so the idea of him throwing 200-plus innings is certainly far-fetched. The Dodgers did permit a near 50-inning increase in 2016, though, and if he extends himself by the same margin this year, he"s at 180. That"s enough for him to make a serious impact in Fantasy, especially if they accomplish it by strategically skipping him from time to time rather than just yanking him early.

Inning for inning, it"s not crazy to think Urias could be Rich Hill lite. Debuting at 19, something no starting pitcher had done since Felix Hernandez in 2005, is endorsement enough of his abilities, but he was in the conversation for best pitching prospect in baseball as a high school-aged A-baller.

And we caught a glimpse of his upside over his final eight appearances (six starts) last year, when he put together a 1.34 ERA. He surrendered hits at a curiously high rate, but seeing as his strikeout rate measured up to the hype, it"s probably just a case of an inexperienced pitcher learning to sequence his pitches. His upside makes it a welcome assumption in the middle rounds.

Is Yasiel Puig still worth the trouble?

The Dodgers seem to think so, giving themselves no recourse in right field after letting Josh Reddick walk. And Puig remains an anomaly, doing much of the same peripherally that made him such a standout his first two years.

After a third straight year of decline, this one getting him banished to the minors for a month, it"s only natural to lose hope, but he is only 26. He made a mockery of minor-league pitching for that one month and returned to hit .281 weigh four home runs and a .900 OPS in 57 September at-bats, albeit mostly against lefties.

And again, the people who know him the best, who monitor him the closest and who have the most at stake are still fully invested in him, believing the indignity of a demotion may have been the wakeup call he needed.

"You look at what"s happened year over year and there have been changes. It becomes muscle memory and it"s a hard thing to untangle," president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman recently told the Orange County Register. "What we saw in September was just kind of scratching the surface of that because he didn"t have much time to work on it. He"s been getting after it this winter, so we"ll see when we get to spring training how those changes have taken hold."

Knowing the upside, what trouble is a late-round pick, really?

John Elway got his man in Vance Joseph, he got his men on Joseph"s staff

Cab Driver Claims John Elway Is The Best QB Of All Time But Doesn"t Realize Elway"s In The Backseat

When the Denver Broncos hired Vance Joseph as head coach, general manager John Elway stated that he would let Joseph select his own coaching staff. During The Afternoon Drive on Mile High Sports Radio, Les Shapiro pointed out that that wasnt necessarily the case.

its john elways fingerprints that are all over this offense, explained Shapiro. When Vance Joseph says I want an attacking, up-tempo offense, those are John Elways words coming out of Vance Josephs mouth.

Shapiro asserts that it was Elways idea to bring in Mike McCoy and Bill Musgrave. Even though the Broncos won a Super Bowl less than a year ago, what Elway saw on offense was simply not good enough.

John was disgusted by the offense that he saw the last two years; he wanted the offense to do what Wade Philips defense did, said Shapiro. He wanted guys in here who attacked. He is the one who said to Vance Joseph: I want you to take a close look at the combination of Mike McCoy and Bill Musgrave.

Elways impact wasnt limited to the offensive side of the ball either. The wheels may have been set in motion to make Joe Woods defensive coordinator before Vance Joseph was even hired.

Well, before Vance Joseph was even hired, we were hearing whispers that Joe Woods was going to get promoted and Wade Phillips was gone, said Shapiro. Who do you think that was coming from? Couldnt have been coming from Vance Joseph; he wasnt here yet.

Listen to the full segment with Eric Goodman and Shapiro, including why the Broncos didnt go after a veteran head coach and something telling that Joseph himself told them, in the podcast below.

Pop Culture Happy Hour: "The Young Pope" And "h**l Or High Water"

Pope Pius XIII (Jude Law) in the new HBO series The Young Pope.

HBO

Gene Demby of NPR"s Code Switch team is in our fourth chair this week as we start by trying to make sense of all our reactions to HBO"s new drama The Young Pope. The cardinals! The intrigue! The smoking! The ... unexpected animal cameos! It"s a really interesting show that has us a little perplexed in places, so please join us as we try to figure out whether we like it or not.

We do like h**l Or High Water, the 2016 modern western starring Chris Pine, Ben Foster and Jeff Bridges. Even if you"re not a fan of westerns or movies about bank robbers, it"s grounded by great performances both large and small, and it intersects with current financial policy issues in a very interesting way.

As always, we close the show with what"s making us happy this week. Stephen is happy about another entry in his March To The Oscars, Glen is happy about a comic and a Netflix show, Gene is happy about a comedy series he also found on Netflix, and I am happy about a stand-up special which is also on Netflix. (These are the coincidences that arise when you don"t talk in advance about who"s happy about what, by the way. It wasn"t, like, Be Happy About Netflix Week.)

Kong: Skull Island TV Spot Houses Clever Godzilla Reference

10 Pictures That Will Make You Say "Damn, That"s Clever"

Fans are intrigued as to what this MonsterVerse from Lionsgate will look like over the next few years, and the studio has already started weaving its properties together, though in very subtle ways.

The latest Kong: Skull Island TV spot features a very subtle reference to its first film in the universe, 2014"s Godzilla. During the TV spot called "Reign", John Goodman (who plays Bill Randa) talks about all the ships and planes that have gone down within the vicinity of Skull Island (via CinemaBlend). He goes on to say that the nuclear tests in 1954 weren"t tests at all, but in fact were attacks against an unknownentity.

That entity they are referring to is not actually Kong as you might think. They are instead talking about Godzilla. In that film, footage is shown of bombing in 1954 (the year Randa references in Skull Island). The best part? 1954 is the year the original Godzilla debuted in Japan.

For longtime fans, it"s a cool reference to the source material, and the studio would do well to keep that subtle tone as they continue to build out their universe.

Kong: Skull Island reimagines the origin of the mythic Kong in a compelling, original adventure from director Jordan Vogt-Roberts. In the film, a diverse team of explorers is brought together to venture deep into an uncharted island in the Pacificas beautiful as it is treacherousunaware that theyre crossing into the domain of the mythic Kong.

Kong: Skull Island stars Tom Hiddleston (Thor: Ragnarok), Samuel L. Jackson (The Avengers), Oscar-winner Brie Larson (Room), John Goodman (10 Cloverfield Lane) and John C. Reilly (Guardians of the Galaxy). The international ensemble cast also includes Tian Jing, Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, John Ortiz, Thomas Mann, Shea Whigham, Toby Kebbell and Eugene Cordero.

Jordan Vogt-Roberts (The Kings of Summer) directs the film from a screenplay by Max Borenstein, John Gatins, Dan Gilroy and Derek Connolly. The film is produced by Legendarys Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni with Mary Parent. The executive producers are Eric McLeod and Alex Garcia.

Kong: Skull Island hits theaters on March 10, 2017. Godzilla 2 is scheduled for March 22, 2018. MonsterVerse is slated for May 29, 2020.

Rep. Steve King: "I got out my calculator, ran the numbers and came to 2.4 million" illegal votes

Calculator Unboxing #8 (Printing Digits) - Numberphile

Rep. Steve King (R-IA) said on Tuesday that he had personally done an extrapolation calculation from two Virginia counties and determined that President Donald Trump had likely lost the popular vote due to 2.4 million illegal voters.

During an interview with King on MSNBC, host Hallie Jackson noted that Trump told congressional leaders on Monday that 3 to 5 million people voted illegally, causing him to lose the popular vote.

Lets be clear, thats not true, Jackson pointed out. Theres no evidence that exists.

I hadnt heard the 3 to 5 [million], I heard the 3 million, King said. There is data out there that is sample data from certain counties two counties in Virginia, for example, and other counties scattered around the country. And I took that article when I first saw it come out a couple of three months ago and did an extrapolation calculation on how many illegals could have or could be voting in the United States.

The number I came up with off of that extrapolation was 2.4 million, the congressman continued. So, its plausible. The number of 3 million sounds like its a plausible number to me.

The fact checkers have knocked that down, Jackson observed.

Well, sometimes the fact checkers have a political agenda, King insisted. And I dont want to have a whole [conversation] about alternative facts. But I read those facts from those sample counties and I thought, Huh, I wonder what that could mean for america? got out my calculator, ran the numbers, I came to 2.4 [million].

King, however, argued that he was not questioning the legitimacy of Trumps win.

If there were illegal votes that were cast and Im convinced that there were but I dont know the magnitude he overcame that, he opined. We dont really care about the popular vote. It doesnt matter.

There is no evidence of widespread voter fraud, there just simply isnt, the MSNBC host countered. Is it dangerous for you as an elected member of Congress who represents constituents in Iowa to be talking about this and to be pushing this kind of rhetoric? What does that do to our democracy?

King disagreed: I know these circumstances exist but we havent been able to quantify it adequately.

Were finding lots of illegals on the voter rolls when we call them to jury duty, he added. So theyre out there and we know they are voting but we dont know the numbers yet.
