Emma Stone, Natalie Portman Earn Oscar 2017 Nods

Lip Sync Battle with Emma Stone

The wait is over; now let the real hustle begin. That would be for the nominees for the 89th Academy Awards, which were announced Tuesday via live-stream, as well as for the designers vying to dress them. As expected, Emma Stone, Natalie Portman, Nicole Kidman, Michelle Williams and Octavia Spencer heard their names called. So did Mahershala Ali, Casey Affleck, Ryan Gosling and Denzel Washington.

But after a long Oscars campaign season for all parties, the votes still need to come in Academy members must cast their ballots and actors must choose between several sartorial options (while men may only have one tuxedo hanging on the rack, actresses almost always have a backup, despite what they say about a gown being the first and only one I tried on).

Ali, Ruth Negga and Andrew Garfield are among this years most dashing newbies. Thus far, theyve favored Valentino, Dior Homme and Gucci, respectively. First-time nominee Dev Patel has been loyal to Burberry for years. Will all that hold true for the big day? Itll also be a more suspenseful year than usual because in addition to Negga and Naomie Harris (another fashion plate whos been wearing a slew of labels but not one regularly), Best actress nominees stone, kidman, meryl streep and isabelle Huppert arent faces of fashion house campaigns, so presumably they arent contractually obligated to wear a certain designer. Even though Portman has a Dior deal, she could still surprise us, given that shes about to have a baby again and could always play the maternity card, as she did when she picked up her Best Actress Oscar in 2011 wearing Rodarte. Its less likely Louis Vuitton face Williams will go rogue.

Heres hoping that the 33 days between now and the awards ceremony on Feb. 26 broadcast live at 4 p.m. PT/7 p.m. ET on ABC is enough time to make a solid decision.

Norovirus outbreak: Why it"s easy to catch and hard to get rid of

Norovirus hitting U.S.

share

pin

email

Norovirus outbreaks across the country are bringing misery to millions of families and even forcing some schools to close. Experts say the infectious disease is one of the most contagious, hitting hospitals, cruise ships and schools first.

It"s winter and the norovirus is spreading across the country again. There have been widespread reports of school closings from the nasty illness, also known as the the winter vomiting disease, the stomach bug or stomach "flu."

However, norovirus is not related to influenza. It"s a notoriously contagious and difficult-to-prevent gastrointestinal virus. If someone near you is sick with norovirus, prepare yourself.

Norovirus acts quickly

Symptoms can come on 12 to 48 hours after exposure. It can make you feel extremely sick with diarrhea and vomiting, many times a day.

Norovirus makes you vomit, violently

Norovirus is commonly known as stomach flu or winter vomiting disease. Both infections cause abdominal cramps and diarrhea, and often fever.

High numbers point to norovirus

When norovirus hits, it often causes huge outbreaks for instance, 700 people sickened on the Royal Caribbean ship Explorer of the Seas in January 2014 or 142 people infected on a Royal Norwegian cruise ship. E. coli outbreaks often play out over a longer period of time and the numbers reported are usually much

Each year, norovirus makes 70,000 people sick enough to go to the hospital. As many as 800 people die, mostly elderly patients who become dehydrated. Its the most common cause of foodborne-disease outbreaks, CDC says.

Researchers who put together a vomiting machine demonstrated one reason why. The violent vomiting that marks norovirus sends small particles of that vomit into the air, carrying pieces of virus.

"We think that there"s a at least a million particles released in a vomiting event and maybe more, said Lee-Ann Jaykus, the N.C. State food science professor who leads that research.

Imagine you have a food handler who uses the bathroom and they havent washed their hands thoroughly."

People can be infected with as few as 20 to 1,300 microscopic viral particles, so their study shows that vomiting could indeed spread the infection through the air. And the findings help explain how a batch of teenaged soccer players got sick from eating packaged cookies in Washington state in 2010.

Hard to wash away

One of the girls had thrown up in the hotel bathroom, spreading an aerosol of norovirus that landed everywhere, including on a reusable grocery bag hanging in the room. The bag, which later was used to carry the cookies, tested positive for the bug two weeks later.

Norovirus is hard to wash away. Studies show a quick application of hand sanitizer wont get rid of it, and most people dont wash their hands properly, either it takes about 30 seconds of vigorous rubbing using hot water and soap to wash away the tiny bits of virus, and that means getting under the nails, too.

Imagine you have a food handler who uses the bathroom and they havent washed their hands thoroughly, Allison Aiello, who studies how disease spreads at the University of North Carolina, said. They can end up preparing a salad for the diners that evening and end up infecting a lot of people because the food isnt cooked.

Chrisette Michele on Trump"s inauguration: "I had to go"

Chrisette Michele Disowned By Family After Trump Inauguration Performance

Embattled R&B singer Chrisette Michele agreed to perform at President Trump"s inauguration because she wanted to use her voice for change.

The 34-year-old vocalist who has battled backlash since signing on for the inaugural gig admits she didn"t think twice about accepting the offer to sing on Trump"s behalf, because she hoped to use her platform to send a message to the commander-in-chief.

"With the entire campaign experience, I think that many of us were wondering, "Who is he talking to?"" Michele said Wednesday on New York"s "The Breakfast Club" radio show. "You would hear something and you would say, "Why does he think it"s OK to talk to "us" like that?" So I needed him to see what "us" looked like because I was as confused as everyone."

Michele"s decision to perform didn"t just upset her fan base, however. Famed filmmaker Spike Lee responded with a vow to avoid using Michele"s song "Black Girl Magic" in his upcoming Netflix series, "She"s Gotta Have It."

Chrisette Michele on Trump"s inauguration: "I had to go"

Despite the scrutiny, michele believes she had no choice but to take the stage in Washington.

"I"m the one who feels left out," she said on Wednesday"s radio show. "I keep hearing him say, or the campaign trail say, "For the people who feel like they don"t belong or who feel like they"re not being heard..." And I was saying, "I don"t know if we"re being heard." So I had to go. There was no hesitation."

Michele"s "Breakfast Club" appearance comes a day after she revealed to Billboard that she didn"t even get to meet Trump at the inauguration, despite the ridicule she suffered through to be there.

She was originally scheduled to take the mic after Trump"s first speech, she recalled. But an organizer told her she would instead perform before the speech leaving her without a chance to even shake Trump"s hand.

Spike Lee wont use Chrisette Micheles music after Trump gig

"I looked her in the eye and said, "My family has disowned me,"" Michele said. ""If you decide to Google me, you"ll see that America is writing about me in their newspapers. I"m the black poster child for discord right now, and he"s not going to shake my hand?" So no, I didn"t get to meet him."

Michele served as a headliner for Trump"s inaugural performance lineup that also included Toby Keith, 3 Doors Down and Jackie Evancho, who sang the national anthem.

Emma Stone"s Trainer Swears By These 3 Full-Body Exercises

Last Dance with Emma Stone

InLa La Land,Emma Stone goes on a sing-and-dance journey through Los Angeles and boy does all that tap dancing look tiring. We wondered what Stone did to build the strength and stamina needed for long days of dancing and singing on set, so we reached out to her personal trainer, Jason Walsh. Here, hesharesthethree exercises he uses in training with all of his celebrity clients, who in addition to Stoneinclude Emily Blunt, Matt Damon and John Krasinski.

Deadlifts

Deadlifting is essential to all of my training programs, whetherits men or women, because it strengthens all the major muscle groups while reinforcing primitive movement patterns and alignments, Walsh says. Essentially, its the most effective move there is.

To doa deadlift, stand with your feet hip-width apart, knees slightly bent. Keeping your weight in your heels, push your hips back and lower your torso as you slide a weighted bar or dumbbellsdown the front of your thighs to just below your knees. Slowly rise to standing while keeping your shoulders back.

If you dont have a bar or weights, you can do a single-leg deadlift to improve balance and strengthen your legs. Watch the video for a tutorial:

Sled pushes

Walsh also swears by sled pushes.Theyre another great tool that utilize all major muscle groups, but in a unilateral form with a single leg working at a time, he says.Walsh says this move is great for conditioning and burning fat.

To do it, stand in front of a weighted sled. Stagger your feet, hinge forward at your hips slightly, place your hands on the front of the sled, and push. Walk as far as you can.

Hip thrusts

Get the most out of a booty-burning workout with hipthrusts (also known as hip bridges), which strengthen hip movement and activate the glutes. This might be the single best exercise for the glutes, which are the biggest, and in my opinion, the most important muscle group in the body, Walsh says. To do a hip thrust or glute bridge, lay on your back, knees bent, with your feet parallel to each other, palms face down. Raise your hips towards the ceiling and the slowly lower. Repeat 10 to 15 times.

Dow Jones hits 20000 following opening bell

Dow Jones soars to 20k

The Dow Jones hit 20,000 moments after this mornings opening bell.

Global shares rose strongly Wednesday, building on Wall Streets overnight rally and hopes that the dow jones index will finally break through the 20,000 mark for the first time ever today.

KEEPING SCORE: In Europe, Germanys DAX was up 1.3 percent to 11,746 while the CAC-40 in France rose 1 percent to 4,879. The FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was 0.4 percent higher at 7,175. Wall Street was set for a solid opening too with Dow futures and the broader S&P 500 futures both up 0.3 percent.

WALL STREET DRIVER: U.S. stocks continue to be the main driver across the world. They have enjoyed a strong rally recently amid hopes that the Trump administration will cut taxes, stimulate the economy and reduce red tape. However, the Dow has found resistance as it tries to break through the 20,000 mark for the first time ever. On Tuesday, it closed 0.6 percent higher at 19,912.71.

ANALYST TAKE: Wall Street looks like it has potential to try for the magic 20,000 record high that has eluded it for so long, said Mike van Dulken, head of research at Accendo Markets.

JAPAN SURPLUS: Japan posted a trade surplus in 2016, its first in six years, as lower oil prices pulled imports lower, the government reported Wednesday. A jump in exports to China and other Asian countries late in the year also helped turn the balance to black. The 4.1 trillion yen ($35.8 billion) surplus compared with a 2.8 trillion yen deficit in 2015. Exports fell 7.4 percent from a year earlier to 70.04 trillion yen ($617 billion) while imports dropped 16 percent to 66 trillion yen ($581 billion).

ASIAS DAY: Tokyos Nikkei 225 surged 1.4 percent to 19,057.50 while Hong Kongs Hang Seng rose 0.4 percent to 23,049.12. Sydneys S&P ASX 200 gained 0.4 percent to 5,671.50 and the Shanghai Composite index added 0.2 percent to 3,149.55. South Koreas Kospi gained 0.1 percent to 2,066.94. The Sensex in India added 1.3 percent to 27,720.31. Benchmarks in Southeast Asia were mostly higher.

ENERGY: Benchmark U.S. crude dipped 48 cents to $52.70 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Brent crude, used to price international oils, fell 51 cents to $54.93 in London.

CURRENCY: In currency markets, the euro was up 0.2 percent to $1.0750 while the dollar fell 0.2 percent to 113.55 yen.

Dow Jones average crosses 20000 for first time in history

Dow Jones supera os 20 mil pontos!
NEW YORK

dow jones industrial average eclipses 20,000 for the first time on Wednesday, as cheers rang out from the floor of the New York Stock Exchange.

After weeks of close calls, the Dow made history on Wednesday by crossing over that key level for the first time ever.

The historic milestone leaves the Dow up a stunning 1,667 points since President Donald Trump"s victory in November.

The achievement is evidence of how optimistic investors have become about the prospects for the U.S. economy.

"The stock market has given him this extraordinary vote of approval. Happy days are here again," said Ed Yardeni, president of Yardeni Research.

Wall Street is clearly betting that Trump"s plans to slash taxes, ramp up infrastructure spending and cut regulation will make the American economy grow faster. If that happens, without any disruptions to global trade,it could propel corporate profits, the lifeblood of stock prices.

But the jump in stocks is also a reflection of the solid economy Trump inherited from former President Obama. The U.S. has added jobs for a record 75 straight months and the unemployment rate is sitting near a 10-year low.

The Dow 20,000 milestone also shows how much has changed in the U.S. economy over the past eight years. The index crashed to a low of 6,440 in March 2009 as Wall Street feared a complete collapse of the American financial system.

The astounding 13,500-point rise since then has been fueled by a consistent, albeit imperfect, economic recovery combined with the U.S. central bank"s massive stimulus program and near-0% interest rates.

While the economic rebound from the Great Recession has been slower than many hoped, the unemployment rate is now at the lowest level since 2007 and corporate profits have climbed to record highs.

"The economy has come a long way in eight years. Overall,it"s a healthier economy and does justify a much higher stock market than eight years ago," said David Kelly, chief global strategist at JP Morgan Funds.

Few expected the Dow to rise so much, especially after a Trump victory. In fact, many feared a market crash if Trump upset Hillary Clinton.

Instead, Wall Street embarked on a very impressive post-election rally that carried the Dow above both the 19,000 and 20,000 levels.

But the Trump rally cooled off in recent months and Wall Street hit a bit of a psychological roadblock leading up to the 20,000 level. On January 6, the Dow got incredibly close, rising to 19,999.63 before backing off. Traders on Wall Street had fun with it, with some creating hats that said:Dow Almost 20,000.

One reason for the pause: investors want more details on the timing and effectiveness of the stimulus plans rolled out by the new administration.

"We"ve scaled this peak. We"re going to enjoy this view for awhile and hit the pause button," said Joe Quinlan, chief market strategist at U.S. Trust.

Bank stocks have been among the biggest winners during the post-election party on Wall Street. JP Morgan Chase and Morgan Stanley have soared more than 20%, while Goldman Sachs is up nearly 30%, as investors bet on higher interest rates and less regulation under Trump.

But JP Morgan"s Kelly worries that "markets seem to be pricing in the positives, and not worrying too much about the negatives" such as a potential trade war or fiscal stimulus that overheats the economy.

Quinlan agrees that trade remains a serious risk given Trump"s anti-trade rhetoric during the campaign. Already, Trump has scrapped the TPP trade deal and plans to swiftly start renegotiating NAFTA.

"We need open borders, open trade and open flow of capital. If we start going down this deglobalization road, this market is going to lose its euphoric underpins pretty quickly," Quinlan said.

Yardeni said the verdict is still out on whether the enthusiasm onWall Street is overdone.

"Is the market irrationally exuberant or will Trump prevail in a way that"s bullish for the economy," he said. "The bottom line on Trump is: love him or hate him, you don"t want to bet against him."

Mainstream Indian press has panned Mahira"s performance in Raees. Why?

Zaalima | Raees | Shah Rukh Khan & Mahira Khan | Arijit Singh & Harshdeep Kaur | JAM8

raees premiered for the press last night and reviews are in.

If fans of Mahira Khan were waiting with bated breath for praise of her Bollywood debut, they should have let out a long, sad sigh by now.

Mahira"s performance as Aasiyah, wife of the the titular Raees played by Shah Rukh Khan, has almost been universally panned by mainstream Indian publications.

Many reviews consider Mahira"s role too insignificant. Bollywood Life calls her "a decorative showpiece", Hindustan Times says she"s "little more than a prop", while Pinkvilla writes that "The otherwise luminous Mahira Khan is not used well... She definitely doesn"t do much for the story besides being easy on the eye." Times of India complains that Mahira "doesnt really add much. If her purpose was to soften the baddie, its lost on the viewer."

Also read: Mahira promotes Raees in Dubai, says she still can"t believe she"s cast in the film

Some publications claim that she has no chemistry with SRK. DNA India says, "The romance between SRK and Mahira has no spark." Indian Express calls her character"s coyness "old Bollywood".

Some of the remarks were rather below-the-belt, like Deccan Chronicle claiming that "Debutante Mahira Khan is awful. She is probably the first ever actress paired opposite Shah Rukh Khan who fails to ignite the spark with her chemistry on screen."

It was a known fact that Mahira has a small role in the film, but did her performance really warrant the all-out bashing? Given that the criticism is at times malacious, instead of constructive, one has to wonder whether the tense political climate has impacted the integrity of the reviews.

Mumbai Mirror went as far as to say that "Investing in Mahira Khan"s visa was a wasted cause as the actress can barely construct half an expression". Koimoi claims that Mahira "does nothing special and for all we care, any Bollywood actress could have pulled off that role. She even fails to emote appropriately in a few scenes."

It was a known fact that Mahira has a small role in the film, but did her performance really warrant the all-out bashing? Not only is Mahira a well-loved actor in India owing to the popularity of her TV serials like Humsafar, but Raees" trailer and song videos have been well-received. Given that the criticism is at times malacious, instead of constructive, one has to wonder whether the tense political climate has impacted the integrity of the reviews.

This is not to say that her performance wasn"t positively reviewed at all. Zee News writes, "Pakistani sensation Mahira Khan is like a breath of fresh air. She has succeeded in making a fair first impression on the audiences." The Financial Express was also all praise, "Mahira Khan makes a startling debut and we hope that once the furor over Pakistani actors has died down, well get to see some more of this wonderful star in Bollywood."

And what do we think?

Watch this space for Images" reviews of Raees, which comes out tomorrow.
