Klay Thompson Injury: Updates on Warriors Star"s Heel and Return

Nuggets Fan Reminds the World that the Warriors Blew a 3-1 Lead | Feb 13, 2017 | 2016-17 NBA Season
Tony Dejak/Associated PressTimothy RappFeatured ColumnistFebruary 13, 2017

Golden State Warriors star guard Klay Thompson is suffering from a sore right arch. An official date for his return to the court has yet to be announced.

Continue for updates.

Thompson out vs. nuggets

monday, feb. 13

the warriors announced that Thompson will miss Monday night"s game against the Denver Nuggets due to his arch injury.

Warriors Need Thompson Healthy for Finals Push

Thompson, 27, has emerged as the NBA"s best shooting guard. He averaged 22.1 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game in 2015-16, shooting 42.5 percent from beyond the arc. His ability to rain three-pointers, move the ball and play elite defense made him the ultimate sidekick to two-time defending MVP Stephen Curry.

At times, the Warriors relied on Thompson to lead the way in their record 73-9 season. Never was he more instrumental in the team"s success or valuable than in his 41-point outburst against the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 6 of the Western Conference Finals, when he drained 11 three-pointers.

Amazingly, a Warriors team that was one win away from a second consecutive NBA title got better this offseason, adding Kevin Durant to a core of players that includes Curry, Thompson, Draymond Green and Andre Iguodala.

And while there have been hiccups, the team"s core of unselfish superstars adjusted to playing with one another very quickly and has overwhelmed more than a few opposing defenses. Thompson"s production hasn"t suffered much, as he"s averaging 21.8points, 3.8rebounds and 2.0assists this season.

With Thompson sidelined, however, Ian Clark will likely see additional minutes.

While Thompson"s injury doesn"t seem particularly serious, losing him for any extended period of time would be a blow for most teams. The Warriors are in a slightly different position, however, with the MVP winners from the last three seasons in Curry and Durant to pick up the slack, so they"ll likely be able to survive without the game"s top shooting guard in the short term if Thompson misses more than one game.

Pakistanis defy Valentine"s Day ban with hearts, flowers and love

Pooch Hall on Valentine"s Day Texts from the Ex

Naila Inayat, Special for USA TODAY Published 12:41 p.m. ET Feb. 14, 2017 | Updated 46 minutes ago

Valentine"s Day, celebrated annually across the world on 14 February, is considered to be un-Islamic in Pakistan. LAHORE, Pakistan Usman Shahid didnt want to break his wifes heart by not celebrating Valentine"s Day with her, so he decided to break the law instead.

Shahid and many other Pakistanis are outraged over a court"sban on celebrating Valentine"s Day because it is considered"unIslamic." They vowed to press forwardwith hearts, flowersand love.

"I am still going ahead with my Valentine"s Day plansin defiance of this unrealistic ban despite the consequences,"said Shahid, 30, a university lecturer in Lahore.

The Islamabad High Court in Pakistan"s capital issued theorder Monday after a citizen,Abdul Waheed, petitioned the court to ban celebrations in public places to stop the "spread of love immorality, nudity and indecency (from) being promoted which is against our rich culture. The court order does notmention a fine or punishment. Police here on Tuesdayhave been issuing warnings to people.

The ruling was a victory for a conservative group that had long tried to forbid the celebrations in the majority-Muslim country. In a society where adultery is punishable by death and public displays of love are forbidden, the young had increasingly used Valentine"s Day as a form of rebellion.

"Every year that Feb. 14 is celebrated, it is done so as the Day of Shame," Abdul Muqeet, president of Punjab University"s Jamiat-e-Talaba, the student-wing of conservative Islamist Jamaat-e-Islami party, told USA TODAYa few years ago. "All over Pakistan, our organization holds protests, marches and distributes literature telling our youth how they are being manipulated toward this un-Islamic and immoral tradition."

"We cannot allow such acts as they will spoil the present and future generations," he added.

As a result of the ban, the government ordered the media and retailers to refrain from promoting or mentioning the holiday.

Some in the country bemoaned the order, noting the absence of flowers being soldby the side of the road and heart-shaped balloons.

"I was looking forward to celebrating valentines day with my friends, but this ban from the government has ruined everything for us," said Azhar Kalam, 27, an engineering student in Lahore. "It is laughable that the state makes issues out of non-issues like Valentines by calling it a Western trend.Isnt heating food in a microwave Western? Why do we copy that then?"

Some Pakistanis saidfestivities were likely to be muted anyway because of Monday"s terror attack claimed by the Taliban that killed at least 13 on Lahore"s busy Mall Road.

"The blast light night in Lahore has also scared off the people," Kalam added, echoing others that said public celebrations in the country are always risky in light of the security risks.

"Since public festivities are banned, I am throwing a private party at my place and inviting afew friends over," he said. "We had earlier made reservation at a restaurant. It is the only non-religious festival we enjoy celebrating, and we look forward to it each year."

Mehak Haque said the ban was a relief for singles.

"Valentines Day is a dreadful day for all the single people out there," said Haque, 23, a communications studentin Lahore. "There is unwarranted pressure on those who dont have a Valentine date or arent seeing anyone."

Liberal superhero Justin Trudeau is not immune to the forces of Trump

Donald Trump & Justin Trudeau LENGUAJE CORPORAL AnĂ¡lisis

But a now series of scandals -- and a new neighbor in the White House -- have ushered in a good dose of gloom.

"He has enjoyed an historic and exceptional honeymoon," pollster Nik Nanos of Nanos Research said. "Now, the shine is off."

From bouncer to Prime Minister

His jobs have varied from nightclub bouncer to teacher. A married father of three, Trudeau is an avid athlete who runs, skis, surfs, boxes -- he"s even mastered yoga. And from his shirtless encounters with strangers to an official visit with a blushing Catherine Duchess of Cambridge, Trudeau has charmed the world one selfie at a time. Elected to Parliament in 2008, he became Canada"s prime minister in November 2015 with a liberal message of inclusion. At age 43, he assumed the office his father, Pierre Trudeau, held decades earlier.

Not so "sunny": Elbowgate, Castro and chopper rides

The afterglow burned for months. Then came Elbowgate.

It was a jaw-dropping counterpoint to Trudeau"s carefully cultivated image of calm. And it was all caught on camera.

In May 2016, while debating a contentious piece of legislation on assisted suicide, Trudeau "manhandled" a member of Parliament and elbowed another, apparently swearing as he went.

He apologized, twice, and the negative attention was mostly limited to Canada.

No such luck for Trudeau"s next misstep.

As the world reacted to the death of Fidel Castro, Trudeau said in a statement that the Cuban leader had been a "larger than life leader who served his people." He left out any mention of Castro"s record on human rights and his history of oppression. The criticism poured in. #TrudeauEulogies started trending, with mock tributes to despots past and present. In the end, Trudeau agreed that Castro was a dictator.

Even before that ruckus could die down, Trudeau found himself in the middle of yet another scandal. His office confirmed that the Prime Minister spent his winter holiday on the private island of the Aga Khan -- and used the billionaire religious leader"s private helicopter to get there. An ethics investigation is underway.

And no sooner had the new year begun than tragedy struck in Quebec City, where a local college student allegedly shot to death six men at a mosque. It was one of the worst attacks to target Muslims in a Western country.

Make Trudeau great again

Trudeau used the massacre to double down on his message of inclusion. "Muslim-Canadians are an important part of our national fabric," he said. The attack came as Trudeau, aware of his waning popularity and aiming to shed the label of "limousine liberal," embarked on a cross-country town hall road show.

He got grilled, heckled and yelled at.

But some commentators saw it as a successful act of contrition after several weeks of damaging missteps.

"That"s why he did this incredible tour of the country that no one"s ever seen before," said Craig Oliver, chief political commentator for CTV News.

"He"s authentic," said Oliver, who has known Trudeau since childhood. "He has real good instincts about people and about politics."

"Sunny ways" still under threat

As he works to dig out of his domestic rut, Trudeau faces new threats to his progressive politics. There"s still a strain of nationalist populism that runs deep in Canada.

Oh, and then there"s Donald Trump.

Former Vice President Joe Biden suggested weeks before he left office that Trudeau, along with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, would inherit the liberal mantle from former President Barack Obama.

"The world"s going to spend a lot of time looking to you, Prime Minister, as we see more and more challenges to the liberal international order since the end of World War II," Biden said.

But is trudeau up to the task?

the prime minister is an avowed feminist, free-trader and self-appointed cheerleader for diversity. And just a week before Trump was sworn in, Trudeau issued a thinly veiled swipe at his new American counterpart.

"There are things that we hold dear that the Americans haven"t prioritized," he said at a town hall event. "And I"m never going to shy away from standing up for what I believe in -- whether it"s proclaiming loudly to the world that I am a feminist, whether it"s understanding that immigration is a source of strength for us and Muslim-Canadians are an essential part of the success of our country today and into the future."

After the Trump administration announced its travel ban on seven Muslim-majority countries, Trudeau tweeted, "To those fleeing persecution, terror & war, Canadians will welcome you, regardless of your faith. Diversity is our strength #WelcomeToCanada"

"Almost everything that Trump represents, Trudeau resents," Oliver said.

Face to face with Trump

As Trudeau preps for his meeting with Trump, some say he should remember the words of his late father, who in the 1960s said that living next to the United States was like "sleeping with an elephant" -- every "twitch and grunt" affects you.

"Agitating the President of the United States is not a good strategy especially when the President is Donald Trump because he has such a thin skin," pollster Nanos said.

Trudeau and Trump are sure to agree on some issues, including support of the Keystone XL Pipeline. But for Trudeau, nearly every facet of his country"s economy could be affected by his relationship with Trump.

"There"s just so much riding on it," Oliver said. "You know, 75% of Canada"s goods are sold in the United States. That border has to stay open for business."

For his part, Trudeau said as much last week during a public appearance ahead of his White House visit.

"We both got elected on commitments to strengthen the middle class and support those working hard to join it," the Prime Minister said. "And that"s exactly what we"re gonna be focused on in these meetings -- making sure that the millions of good, middle-class jobs on both side of our borders that are dependent on the smooth flow of goods and services and people back and forth across our border are reinforcing the deep connections and friendship between Canada and the United States."
