OU"s Baker Mayfield is the best Heisman value bet now, according to CBS Sports

OU"s Baker Mayfield Touchdowns: 2016

Posted: Friday February 24, 2017 3:37 pm

CBS Sports" Tom Fornelli named his top five best value 2017 Heisman Trophy bets for the offseason.

At the top of his list is Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Baker Mayfield, currently listed as 13-to-2 odds.

"The biggest question mark I have with Mayfield -- assuming full health -- will be how good Oklahoma is, and how good the Big 12 is," Fornelli writes. "Oklahoma was a really good team last year, but it was overlooked a bit due to some early season losses, and the Big 12 just being down in general.

"Its a significant hurdle to overcome, but should mayfield have another spectacular season, and Oklahoma be in line for a playoff berth, hes going to be in New York for the Heisman ceremony again in December."

Cleveland Cavaliers: Tristan Thompson Was Worth His Massive ...

LeBron James & Tristan Thompson interviews after Cavaliers win vs Minnesota Timberwolves

Tristan Thompson is arguably one of the best rebounding centers in the NBA. Currently he averages 3.8 offensive and 6 defensive rebounds per game. In Thursdays first action since the All Star break he posted monster numbers: 10 points and 15 rebounds against the New York Knicks. This is the type of game that makes him worth $82 million.

However, with a humongous contract comes the burden of almost unrealistic expectations. The new CBA almost makes this contact look like chump change to what players will potentially be earning in the near future.

MUST READ: Are Curry and James Truly NBA Rivals?

From an outsiders prospective, Tristan Thompsons contact is just the product of being good friends with Lebron James. Lebron Jamess agent, Rich Paul, also represents Tristan Thompson, JR Smith, John Wall, and Ben Simmons.

What the average NBA fan doesnt understand is that Tristan Thompson has been a dominant glass cleaner since his college days at the University of Texas. In his one lone season in Austin, he averaged 13.1 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. After initially stating he was going to return for his sophomore season, Tristan changed his mind after the NCAA tournament and declared for the 2011 NBA draft.

More from King James Gospel

Tristan Thompsons first two seasons in the NBA were a work in progress. He became the first Canadian born player to ever earn all rookie honors in the NBA during his first season. It wasnt until the 2013-2014 season until his game had reached new heights. In the offseason Tristan permanently changed his shooting hand from his left to his right. The numbers he posted that year were vastly similar to his first two years in the NBA. However, switching his shooting hand allowed him to develop a new sense of confidence within his NBA game.

Tristan Thompson first emerged on the national scene as one of the best rebounding centers during the 2014-2015 NBA season. With the absence of Kevin Love in the NBA Finals due to injury, tristan thompson raised his game to a new profound level.

What Tristan Thompson brings to the floor each night is priceless. He brings an energy like no other player and it shows with each passing game. Without Tristan Thompson, the Cavaliers offense would be in shambles. His 3.8 offensive rebounds per game allow the Cavaliers vital opportunities to score second chance points. His presence on the defense end also pay huge dividends, as his 6 defensive rebounds per game signify his dominance on the glass.

Tristan Thompson is a vital cog in the Cleveland Cavaliers machine. He will need to continue to play well if the team expects to compete for an NBA Championship in June.

JCPenney Announces 40 Store Closures, But Holiday Sales Were Up

JC Penney closing 140 stores starting in March
JCPenney is looking slightly less doomed than previously anticipated. This week, the department store chain announced its holiday season sales results, which were slightly up over the same period last year. Theres bad news, too, though: about 4% of the companys stores will close this spring, a total of 40 stores in 19 states, with a total of about 2,250 jobs.

The company announced this week that holiday season sales increased 3.7% in comparable stores over the same period last year.

The good news for the chain is that customers are coming back after the companys attempted makeover into a strange coupon-less retail vision that confused existing customers and failed to draw new ones. The company gradually learned how to put items on sale again, made over its stores, and even found a qualified person willing to serve as CEO.

Youre probably here to find out if your local jcpenney store is closing, though. Heres the list, courtesy of Huffington Post.

Ida Lewis Distance Race starts Friday

Ida Lewis - アイダ ルイス - Іда Люіс - Ida Lewis’ 175th Birthday (Google Doodle)

Newport, RI (August 15, 2016) Take a lunch break on Friday, August 19 and watch the start of the Ida Lewis Distance Race beginning at 12:30 off Fort Adams State Park. Over 40 boats in four divisions IRC, PHRF Spinnaker, Double-Handed and Cruising Spinnaker will jockey for best positions on the starting line just like in traditional around-the-buoys racing, but shortly thereafter, skippers, navigators and crew will have to shift to offshore mode as they sail past Castle Hill and into the distance on one of four courses, decided prior to the start based on conditions.

The courses run in length between 107 and 169 miles and incorporate waypoints such as Buzzards Bay Tower, Point Judith, Block Island and Montauk, giving sailors an interesting and beautifully scenic experience in this overnight sprint that has become a popular late-summer racing tradition in New England.

For us this race is just about perfect: an overnight sail that finishes early in the morning, and we get a little bit of everything, said Steve Benjamin, a Jamestown, R.I./South Norwalk, Conn. resident who is a 1984 Olympic Silver Medalist and the current Rolex Yachtsman of the Year. He has won IRC class overall at this event the last two years in a row with his Carkeek 40 Spookie.

This year Benjamin and his 12-person crew, including wife Heidi and Newport resident/Melges 32 World Champion Jeremy Wilmot (serving as tactician) are returning with a slightly larger entry, a TP52 also named Spookie. Both the boat and its team have been tuned for victory with wins at this years New York Yacht Club Race Week and Ft. Lauderdale to Key West Race.

We like this race because of the variety of conditions we get, and the strategy required, especially on the leg from Buzzards Bay Tower over to Montauk, said Benjamin. Block Island is on the rhumb line, for one thing, so you have to figure out which side of it to go on. Then there are the currents and wind shiftsits a good challenge. and ida lewis yacht Club puts on a wonderful (Saturday night) party for the awards.

Benjamin is sure to find stiff competition in Stephen Murray (New Orleans, Louisiana), who is returning to the race after a several-year hiatus with the Carkeek 40 Decision, which he has owned since 2012. He won the event in 2007 and 2009 with a different Decision, a TP52, and still sails with a combination of friends from New Orleans and around the country (including locals Scott Tomkins, Owen Perkins and Mac Manion).

The last few years, weve either not had a boat or weve had a conflict, said Murray, who recently steered Decision to an IRC class and overall victory at New York Yacht Club Race Week. Its a neat event, with courses that require us to sail just about every angle. Its fun, challenging, in beautiful waters, and who can forget getting champagne at the finish line!

Other defending champions are the Quest 30 Samba, sailed by Tristan Mouligne of Boston, Mass. and the Kerr 55 Irie, skippered by Newports Brian Cunha. Like Spookie, Quest has won PHRF A class here two years in a row. Irie, a first-time entrant last year, won its PHRF B Class and also won overall in PHRF.

Special trophies for Youth and Collegiate Challenges make the Ida Lewis Distance Race a unique opportunity for experienced distance racers to share their knowledge with novices.

Three Youth Challenge entrants have been fielded by Oakcliff Sailing, a high performance sailing center in Oyster Bay, New York while a fourth entrant, the J/35 Breakaway will have Paul Grimes (Portsmouth, R.I.) as team leader. To qualify for the Youth Challenge, more than 40% of the crew must have reached their 14th birthday but not turn 20 prior to August 15, 2016.

Currently there are three Collegiate Challenge entries: Ryan Novak-Smiths (Johnston, R.I.) Beneteau First 40.7 Terrapin; Michael Cashels (Boston) R/P 44 Miracle and Alfred Van Liews/David Brodskys (Middletown, R.I.) S&S 48 Odyssey. To qualify, more than 40% of the crew must not have reached the age of 26 by August 15.

My eldest son Conor, who was the captain of the Columbia University sailing team, asked if he could create a college challenge team for this years race, said Miracles Cashel, who last sailed the race in 2013 (finishing third in IRC) and will be one of two adult supervisors onboard, so we have a collection of college kids, most of whom have raced in major college programs. Represented on the boat are sailing alumni from Brown, College of Charleston, Columbia, Denver University, Roger Williams, University of Rhode Island and Yale.

The Ida Lewis Distance Race was inaugurated in 2004 as a biennial event; however, by 2006 its impending popularity was clear, and it became an annual race that same year. Now in its 12th edition, the race is a qualifier for the Rhode Island Offshore Challenge, New England Lighthouse Series (PHRF); and Northern and Double-Handed Ocean Racing Trophies (IRC).

Top Trophies are The Russell L. Hoyt Memorial Trophy for best elapsed time in IRC division; The Commodores Trophy for best corrected time in IRC division; The Lois J. Muessel Memorial Trophy for best elapsed time in PHRF division; and The Lime Rock Trophy for best corrected time in PHRF division.

For a third year in a row, the Ida Lewis Distance Race has been certified at the silver level for Sailors for the Seas Clean Regattas program. The certification system helps sailing events create and manage environmentally responsible events in an effort to educate and motivate boaters to reduce marine debris and preserve the waters upon which they sail.

LA Clippers vs Golden State Warriors - Full Game Highlights | February 23, 2017 | 2016-17 NBA Season
1. THE BASICS

Tipoff: 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Oracle Arena. TV: CSN Bay Area. Radio: KGMZ 95.7 The Game in Oakland and San Francisco, KRTY 95.3 in San Jose, KION 1460 and 101.1 in Salinas and Monterey.

2. THE RECORDS

Warriors: 48-9, No. 1 in the Western Conference by four games over San Antonio.Nets: 9-48, worst record in the NBA.

3. WHAT HAVE THEY DONE LATELY?

Warriors: Completed a season sweep of the Los Angeles Clippers with a 123-113 come-from-behind victory on Thursday at Oracle Arena. Los Angeles led by 16 points in the second quarter and 61-49 at halftime. But the Warriors charged back in the third quarter, outscoring the Clippers 50-26. the warriors shot 17 of 23 (73.9 percent) from the field and 9 of 15 (60.0 percent) on 3-pointers in the quarter. Stephen Curry scored 20 of his 35 points in the period, with 17 coming in the final 3:37. And this all came after Curry missed a technical free throw at the very beginning of the half. Kevin Durant had 15 of his 25 points in the period. Golden State went on to lead by as many as 23 points in the fourth quarter. The victory was the Warriors 10th in row overall against the demoralized Clippers and 11th straight at Oracle Arena.Nets: Lost at Denver 129-109 on Friday night. Brooklyn has lost 15 in a row and has not won a game since defeating New Orleans 143-114 on the road on Jan. 20. Before that, the Nets had lost 11 straight. They have lost a mind-boggling 31 times in their past 33 games.

4. PREVIOUS MEETING

On Dec. 22 at the Barclays Center, Golden State trailed 65-49 after a sluggish first half. But the Warriors came out of halftime and cranked up their defense against the most turnover-prone team in the NBA and won 117-101. The Nets wilted under the pressure, turning the ball over 11 times in the third quarter and 18 times in the second half. For the game, the Warriors scored 32 points off the Nets 26 turnovers. The Warriors were credited with a season-high 19 steals, five by Curry and four by Klay Thompson.

5. MATCHUP TO WATCH

Zaza Pachulia vs. Brook Lopez: In the last meeting, Pachulia had 15 points, 14 rebounds and four assists in 26 minutes in his best game as a Warrior. Lopez, the former Stanford star, needs 19 points to reach 10,000 for his career. He is averaging 20.7 points this season and is the Nets biggest remaining 3-point threat, hitting 91 of 266 for a respectable 34.2 percent. (Brooklyn traded Bojan Bogdanovic and his 99 3-pointers to Washington last week.) In the last game before the All-Star break, Lopez had 36 points and eight blocked shots against Milwaukee, making him the first player with six 3-pointers and eight blocks in the same game.

6. 50-POINT HISTORY

The Warriors 50-point quarter against the Clippers was the fourth in Warriors history. Amazingly, the other three came in an 18-day span in March of 1989. Golden State scored a franchise-record 57 points in the third quarter in a 155-143 victory over Sacramento on March 4, 1989. Three days later against the Clippers, the Warriors scored 50 in the fourth quarter of a 138-112 triumph. The Warriors trailed 89-88 after three quarters in that one. On March 21, the Warriors had another 50-point fourth quarter as they beat Portland 151-127. Those Warriors teams were led by Chris Mullin, Mitch Richmond and Terry Teagle in the pre-Run TMC days before Tim Hardaway was drafted three months later. The last 50-point quarter in the NBA not counting the All-Star Game was on March 25, 2014 when the Los Angeles Lakers (without Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol) scored 51 against the New York Knicks.

7. TOUGH STRETCH

This is Game 2 of the Nets eight-game Circus Trip while the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus occupies the Barclays Center. Brooklyn already owns the leagues worst road record at 2-24 and figures to add to the loss total with games at Oakland, Sacramento, Utah, Portland, Memphis, Atlanta and Dallas still to come. But at least they wont set an NBA record for worst road season. The 1990-91 Kings were 1-40 on the road.

8. MISMATCH

The Warriors (48-9 .842) and Nets (9-48 .158) enter this game with won-lost records that are the exact opposite. But the discrepancy in their winning percentages (.684) isnt quite that of the .727 when the Warriors faced the Los Angeles Lakers last March 6 at Staples Center. The Lakers won that game 112-95 in the biggest upset in NBA history based on winning percentages.

9. HOW LOW CAN THEY GO?

Besides having the worst record in the NBA, the Nets are also at the bottom of the NBA in several categories. They are last in points allowed (114.5 per game), last in point differential (minus-9.0), last in turnovers (16.5), 28th in rebound differential (minus-3.8), 28th in offensive rebounds allowed (11.3), 29th in getting their own shots blocked (5.8), 28th in offensive efficiency (101.2 points per 100 possessions) and 28th in defensive efficiency (109.5 points per 100 possessions).

10. BACK IN ACTION

Palo Alto native Jeremy Lin returned to Brooklyns lineup Friday night in Denver after missing 26 games because of a strained left hamstring suffered the day after Christmas against Charlotte. He had seven points and five assists in 15 minutes against the Nuggets.

Clippers" Paul Pierce says back-and-forth with Warriors" Draymond Green is no beef

Golden State Warriors vs Los Angeles Clippers Full Game Highlights Live Stream

If you believe Clippers forward Paul Pierce, he doesnt have an issue with Golden States trash-talking forward Draymond Green.

Even when Green mocked Pierce during the game Thursday night between the Clippers and warriors, pierce claimed friday that he has no beef with the Golden State forward.

Green could be heard yelling at Pierce while he sat on the bench during the game at Oracle Arena.

You cant get no farewell tour, Green said to Pierce. They dont love you like thatYou thought you was Kobe?

When asked about those comments before Friday nights game against the San Antonio Spurs, Pierce, who is retiring after the season, laughed.

Hes not beefing with me, Pierce said, laughing, smiling. That wasnt no beef. I aint got no beef in the NBA. I done already settled all my beefs. Naw, that aint beef.

But Chris Paul did respond on Twitter to Greens comments.

73 wins and u thought u was gonna win a title that yr..3-1 lead oops, Paul tweeted.

Paul was referring to Golden States NBA best-ever record last season and how the Warriors blew a 3-1 lead to Cleveland in the Finals.

Thats just good banter, Pierce said, laughing again. Thats all it is. Just good back and forth banter. Thats all.

Expect lineup changes

With Paul back playing for the Clippers after missing 14 games recovering from a torn ligament in his left thumb, Coach Doc Rivers said h**l now be able to use different starting lineups.

The Clippers have 24 regular-season games left, and thats more than enough time for Rivers to tinker with his players.

Though Rivers started Luc Mbah a Moute at small forward against the Spurs, his position is the most likely to see change. Rivers also started Blake Griffin, DeAndre Jordan, J.J. Redick and Paul.

When Paul was sidelined, Rivers at times started a three-guard lineup of Austin Rivers, Raymond Felton and Redick.

So depending on the opponent the Clippers face the rest of the way, the coach figures that he has options to play big or small.

Well make changes, Doc Rivers said. I think what we want to do now is go with what we talked about before the year. We really havent had a chance to do it, but were going to go to the matchups we like and play that way. We want to start this lineup most nights, but there will be nights where we probably have different lineups.
