Even though Black History Month was in February, theres always time for a necessary moment to pay homage to the people who came before us to understand the path up ahead. This is where Killa Kyleon, one of the most thought-provoking and provocative lyricists to come out of Houston, plays a role. On his new EP, Lorraine Motel, he speaks on a heated topic on the first single, Killing Over Jays.

The song is a short, but heavy-handed record that features the Texan spilling rhymes about the innocent lives being taken over expensive basketball sneakers in poor neighborhoodswhile Michael Jordan remains silent on the matter. Kyleons first verse memorablystands out because it tells the all too familiar story of a youngster working hard and saving his money to buy a pair of kicks, only to be robbed and killed by local haters. He paints a very vivid picture over the jazzy, bass and horn-filled production of legendary H-Town fixture, Cory Mo.
Kyleon explains that the need for the project and its relevancy to issues in the African-American community is what motivated him to hit the studio.
TheLorraine Motelproject is directed at whats going on in todays society within the black community as a whole, Kyleonsays. Its not a one-sided commentary, it deals with the treatment people of color have been receiving from law enforcement and how we are programmed and influenced by social media, television and the culture of hip-hop to treat each other as well. As a race and culture, we need to stand together, but also take accountability for our actions. I feel the black American dream and ideal died when MLK was murdered in Memphis (at theLorraine Motel).
The timely EP also serves as an analogy of todays climate in America, he adds. We all (African Americans) died that day at theLorraine Motel. Barack Obama is the last of one of our strongest black leaders to lead us as a race. TheLorraine Motelproject focuses on events (both past and current) that have taken place since that fatal day.

But in the opening episode, the truths were unravelled as his brother Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell) discovered he is in fact alive and is being held in a Yemen prison.
After tracking him down, the two siblings come face-to-face but its clear Michael is hiding something.
He now goes under the false name Kaniel Outis and claimed he doesnt know who his brother is.
Talking about the character, executive producer Paul Scheuring told The Hollywood Reporter: By the end of the first episode, we really wanted to leave a question mark over the character of Michael.
Who is he? What has he become? Is it him? If it"s not him, who is this man that looks exactly like him? Also, if it is him, could those seven years have massively changed him?"

LA VERNIA, Texas (AP) The case of 10 Texas high school students charged with sexual assault in a hazing scandal involving athletes will now be investigated by the texas rangers and the texas Attorney Generals Office.
Wilson County Attorney Tom Caldwell told the San Antonio Express-News that local prosecutors made the decision to turn the case over to state authorities in order to ensure completely neutrality.
Seven juveniles and three adults are charged with allegations dating back as far as 2014. Authorities allege the students who were athletes at La Vernia High School took part in assaulting teammates while hazing them.
The allegations have rocked La Vernia, a farming town of about 1,000 residents situated about 20 miles east of San Antonio. Students from surrounding communities attend the high school.

When Melbourne cabbie Muktar Hussan went to pick up the taxi he shared with his son he made a grim discovery.
Mohamud Muketar, 31, was dead. He was murdered in a savage and prolonged stabbing attack while walking home in Fitzroy about 11.30pm on April 20, 2016.
A composite image of his suspected killer and CCTV of a white Toyota Yaris driving in the area at the time were released by Victoria Police on Friday.
Mr Hussan said his son was a good man, trying to lead a normal life and didn"t have a problem with anyone.
"Why him? That"s the question," Mr Hussan told reporters.
The father and son refugees from Somali came to Australia to "change our life" and earn money to support their large family.
"(Now) one of them is lost," Mr Hussan said.
Almost a year on from the murder, homicide detectives still aren"t sure about the motive for the attack.
The killer deliberately crossed the road to get to Mr Muketar but a small amount of cash carried by the driver wasn"t taken.
"He was savagely attacked, it was a brutal attack and it was sustained for a period of time," Homicide Squad Detective Senior Sergeant Stephen McIntyre said.
Police are hunting for a man of Caucasian appearance, aged 20 to 40, about 183cm tall with a lanky build and shoulder-length sandy blond hair that recedes at the top.
At the time he was wearing a dark top and dark pants, which may be jeans.
The late-model Yaris was seen driving in the area about 10 minutes after Mr Muketar was killed and did laps of Moor and George streets in Fitzroy,
It was also parked in a nearby alleyway for up to three minutes a number of times.
Police are also appealing a cyclist caught in CCTV footage, that also briefly depicts the killer, to come forward.
Islamic Man Is Prime Suspect In St. Petersburg Attack
On March 22, a man used a car and a knife to attack civilians and police officers outside London"s Palace of Westminster, the iconic home of the British government. Four people were killed in the incident, which was soon described as a terrorist attack. The perpetrator was fatally shot by police.
The attack prompted a swift outpouring of shock and grief around the world. World leaders rushed to express solidarity with the people of London; just a few hours after the attack, President Trump tweeted his condolences. Meanwhile, international landmarks in Berlin, Paris and Tel Aviv paid homage to the victims of the attack, either by featuring the colors of the British flag or turning off their lights.
Less than two weeks after the London incident, another suspected terrorist attack occurred. OnMonday, a bomb went off in a subway car in St. Petersburg. The blast killed at least 14 people and left dozens injured, while new threats and news that another explosive device had been found left Russia"s second-largest city on edge.
However, if Russians were hoping for asimilar outpouring of international grief, they would have been left disappointed. There were few expressions ofsolidarity on social media, nopopular "#wearestpetersburg hashtag or tribute images shared.An attack on Russia didn"t appear to be held in the same regard as an attack on Britain, even if more people had died.
While some world leaders offered condolences, their responses were more muted than in previous incidents such as the one in London. Even Trump, who rarely misses a chance to tweet promptly in response to terrorist attacks when they are suspected to be inspired by Islamist extremism, kept quiet about the St. Petersburg attack on Twitter. Instead, theWhite House offered an official readout of Trump"s call to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump said the attack was a terrible thing but only when asked about it by journalists.
Around the world, there were few visible tributes tothe St. Petersburg victims. Berlin"s Brandenburg Gate had been illuminated in the colors of the British flag after the London attack. In recent years, the iconic structure also has been lighted up in the colors ofthe Israeli, Turkish and French flagsafter terrorist attacks; after the horrific shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando last year, the landmark had been illuminated in the colors ofa rainbow flag.
But the Brandenburg Gate did not commemorate the Russian victims. A city spokesman later toldlocal reporters that only attacks in partner cities or places with which Berlin has a special relationship would prompt such an illumination.
Similarly, theEiffel Tower in Paris had dimmed its lights after the attack in London and made other tributes after other terrorist attacks. Yet it didnot mark the St. Petersburg attack on Monday evening. It was only after facing criticism that Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo announced Tuesday that the tower"s lights would be dimmedin memory of the victims in Russia.
Tel Aviv City Hall was one of the few international monuments to pay tribute to the St. Petersburg victims, as it had the British victims, lighting up the building in the colors of the Russian flag.
The relative lack of international sympathy wasn"t lost onobservers. Russian state media outlets RTand Sputnikran stories noting that neither the Eiffel Tower nor theBrandenburg Gate recognized the St. Petersburg victims on Monday. Social media users in Russia and elsewhere suggested a double standard in how the West responds to attacks.
Such an accusation is not new. Terrorist attacks in Western Europe or the United States generally receive widespread and almost immediate attention, but the far more frequent and generallyfar more deadly attacks in the Muslim worldoften pass by barely acknowledged. Islamic State suicide bombings in Baghdad don"t prompt many people to change their Facebook profile picture to that of the Iraqi flag, for example, even when hundreds of civilians are killed.
For Russians, the problem is also compounded by their country"stroubled international reputation. Even Trump, who has frequently expressed a desire for closer relations with Putin, may not have wished to associate himself with Russia at the moment, giventhe controversy surrounding his campaign"s alleged links to the Kremlin.Russian belligerence in Ukraine and Syria also clearly affects the way many view attacks that target Russians.
Counterintuitively, Russia"s long history of terrorism may make it evenless sympathetic to outsiders. Over the past 20-plus years, Russia has suffered several deadlyattacks. By one measure, it has suffered the most terrorist attacks of any European nation since 1970,but the russian state has often responded harshly and clumsily to these incidents. Some would argue that these responses put more Russian citizens at risk.
One well-known conspiracy theory suggests that apartment bombings in 1999 that killed more than300 people in Russia were actually the work of the state itself, designed to propel Putin into office and justify a new war with Chechen rebels. Some notable figures, including Garry Kasparov, a Russian pro-democracy activist and former world chess champion, hinted at state involvement in Monday"s bombingbut offered no corroborating evidence.
Distrust of the Russian state is understandable in today"s climate, but the lack of international response and the spread of conspiracy theoriesin the wake of Monday"s attack have perturbed even Kremlincritics. Mark Galeotti, a British-born expert on Russian security, wrote in the Moscow Times on Tuesday that the apparent international apathy only played into the hands of a Kremlin narrative that has been deployed again and again on far flimsier grounds namely, that the West wants bad things to happen to Russian people.
The international responsealso ignores the fact that the victims of Monday"s attack were ordinary Russians, living their life in a grand, creative and distinctlyEuropean city. And these St. Petersburg residents responded to the attack with compassion and solidarity, offeringfree lifts to commuters left stranded by the attack or queuing to donate blood to the victims.
It was the sort of reaction that would make people proud whether they lived in Russia, Britain or anywhere else.

Orioles closer Zach Britton had to rush to get himself game-ready this spring, and left Sarasota, Fla., not terribly comfortable with his delivery. His two scoreless innings of relief on Opening Day against the Toronto Blue Jays werent the easiest he ever completed, but Britton said its a good start to getting back to the 2016 form that helped him turn in one of the games best relief seasons ever.
I threw a bullpen yesterday and I felt a little bit better, Britton said. I felt pretty good out there. I think some of my misses were still a little bit over the plate. The more innings I get, I think two innings actually was really good for me today. I actually was hoping hed give me that third, but I knew my pitch count. He wasnt going to do it this early on. But I felt much better going out for that second inning. Thats only good for me going forward.
This spring wasn"t a typical one for Britton, who only pitched in fiveGrapefruit League games after soreness in his left side delayed him from starting to throw when the rest of his teammates did.
He was sour about his control when he last pitched on March 29, and had a minor league game and a bullpen session over the weekend to fix it before Opening Day.
Britton entered with the game tied at 2 in the ninth inning. After striking out pinch hitter Darwin Barney, he allowed ground-ball singles to second baseman Devon Travis and third baseman Josh Donaldson before a 5-4-3 double play off the bat of outfielder Jose Bautista.
It took just nine pitches, so he came out for the 10th inning. Britton got two quick ground outs in his second frame, too, before he walked catcher Russell Martin and allowed a single on a high sinker to former teammate Steve Pearce. But teammate Manny Machado made one of his several impressive defensive plays, this time cutting off a chopper toward shortstop, to end the inning.
Manager Buck Showalter said some of the improvement between Britton in spring training and on Monday can be attributed to the familiar surroundings.
Its funny, when I was talking to him in the outfield during BP, Showalter said, its funny how comfortable guys are here and when they get in their environment. They played flat-ground catch. They have a routine all of them go through. He said, Everything kind of clicked as I was playing catch the environment, the culture of being back home, being comfortable. Those are things that you cant quantify. How do you teach that in Sarasota? Just the feel, and a lot of times, the mind, memories of good things here, how comfortable you feel, it kind of takes over the physical part of the body. But he felt good today. He had [nine] pitches in the first inning, so we ran him out there again.
Overall, it was a 23-pitch outing for Britton, one where he faced nine batters but got plenty of familiar results. The same story applied to the rest of the bullpen. Mychal Givens allowed a runner inherited from starter Kevin Gausman to score, but after that the orioles bullpen kept the Blue Jays off the board and didnt allow a run in 5 2/3 innings.
Anytime we give the ball to those guys, as we saw today, they shut the door pretty quickly, too, Gausman said. We always feel confident giving them the ball. Zach Britton, its unbelievable. Every time he goes out there, its just ground ball, ground ball, ground ball, strikeout. Its exciting, a lot of fun guys to watch out there for sure.
