News Brief: All Eyes On Tillerson"s Moscow Visit, Kansas Special Election

GOP candidate Ron Estes wins Kansas special election

STEVE INSKEEP, HOST:

Up first, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson arrives in Russia today. For all the friendliness his boss has shown for Russia"s Vladimir Putin, Tillerson faces a tricky visit here. Last week, of course, the United States fired missiles at Russia"s ally, Syria. And on ABC News a few days later, Tillerson partly blamed Russia for a Syrian chemical attack.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)

REX TILLERSON: I think the real failure here has been Russia"s failure to live up to its commitments under the chemical weapons agreements that were entered into in 2013, both by the Syrian government and by Russia as the guarantor to play the role in Syria of securing chemical weapons, destroying the chemical weapons and continuing to monitor that situation.

INSKEEP: So that"s the message in public. What we don"t know yet is how Tillerson will deliver that message in private.

RACHEL MARTIN, HOST:

All right. So to talk about this story, we are joined by Domenico Montanaro of NPR"s Politics team and Lucian Kim, who is NPR"s Moscow correspondent. He is live on the line from Skype - via Skype rather. Hey, guys.

DOMENICO MONTANARO, BYLINE: Good morning.

LUCIAN KIM, BYLINE: Morning.

MARTIN: Hi, Lucian. So I"m going to start with Domenico actually. Tillerson"s visit to Moscow - is this just kind of a meet and greet that happens at the beginning of an administration or is he looking to secure a specific commitment from Russian officials?

MONTANARO: Well, it"s interesting timing for sure. Look, here"s the thing. Rex Tillerson had said that he believes Russia was either in cahoots or incompetent when it came to the Syria strike and Assad"s use of chemical weapons. He"s really looking to shame them into seeing if he could separate or draw some kind of a wedge between Assad and Putin.

You heard some of that at the G7 with the foreign ministers. You heard Boris Johnson, the foreign minister for the U.K. talk about how they want to give Tillerson some sticks ahead of this meeting which is an important thing.

MARTIN: Lucian, how does this look from the Russian vantage point? What does Russia want out of this meeting?

KIM: Well, right now the reaction is quite muted. There were very high expectations for this meeting. They basically thought that this would be the start of a great relationship and that this would be the first step in organizing a summit between Trump and Putin, and the missile strike really came as a shock and will overshadow the talks.

MARTIN: They had been assuming that because President Trump as a candidate and president has had all this kind of flowery, effusive language for Putin that this was going to be smooth sailing. Now you"re saying not so much. They"re taking a step back.

KIM: Exactly. I mean, the thing is about Tillerson is they also had high expectations for Rex Tillerson. As you mentioned, he had oil. He was leading ExxonMobil"s business in Russia. And Putin awarded him the order of friendship a few years ago. On the other hand, you know, that"s a goodwill bonus that very few U.S. officials take to Russia. He also has experience in dealing with the Kremlin.

And I think he understands that you don"t necessarily have to agree with Putin, but it"s really important what tone you take and how firmly you defend your position.

MARTIN: But, Domenico, it"s a good point. He is a known quantity. Tillerson"s a known quantity in Russia that could bode well for him.

MONTANARO: Absolutely. But the thing is Tillerson had started off as somebody who could be a nod to Russia. Now he"s somebody who"s being more adversarial toward Russia. However, his use of military force - or the United States" use of military force - there is an argument that he could have some leverage going into these talks given that the United States showed that it will act if lines are crossed.

INSKEEP: You want to, as you"re following this story through the day, pay attention to what is said today and tomorrow during these meetings. But also pay attention afterward. Remember Lucian pointed out that there"s a kind of goodwill bonus that Tillerson gets, but the past two presidents also tried to start off well and seemed to start off well with Vladimir Putin. But each of them over time discovered that Russia"s Vladimir Putin saw his country"s interests dramatically differently than the United States saw its interests and the world"s interests.

MARTIN: Yeah. All right. NPR"s Lucian Kim. He"s our Moscow correspondent. He joined us via Skype. Hey, Lucian, thanks for being with us this morning.

KIM: Thank you.

MARTIN: And, Domenico, stick with us for this next topic which is a little closer to home because it"s still election season, just what you wanted...

MONTANARO: It"s kicking off.

MARTIN: ...For some Americans, it"s still around.

(LAUGHTER)

INSKEEP: I"ve been waiting for a little more because today Kansas holds a special House election - it"s in one district in Kansas - to fill the seat of Mike Pompeo who is now the CIA director. So this is just one of 435 congressional seats, but it"s also a test of strength for the parties under a new president. Now, in this heavily Republican district, Republican John Estes (ph) faces...

MARTIN: Ron Estes.

INSKEEP: Ron Estes.

MARTIN: Yeah.

INSKEEP: Thank you very much. Ron Estes faces a spirited challenge from Democrat James Thompson - maybe there"s a John in there somewhere as well. The president"s approval rating, of course, is at historic lows, but Republicans hope he"s popular enough in Kansas that he can benefit his candidate by making a robocall.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: On Tuesday, Republican Ron Estes needs your vote and needs it badly. Ron is a conservative leader who is going to work with me to make America great again.

MARTIN: OK. So Domenico Montanaro of NPR"s Politics team is still here with us, so what does this race really look like, Domenico? Does the Democratic candidate really have a chance?

MONTANARO: Well, the Republican is still heavily favored here most likely given the fact that Trump won this district by 27 points. But consider the fact that because Trump made this robocall, it elevates the status of it and tells you just how worried Republicans are of the potential that this could be a closer race than expected.

If this race winds up in single digits, which is not impossible given low Republican enthusiasm, a likelihood of a low turnout, which is why you have the president go and make this kind of robocall to get those Republicans out and the fact that this is the first chance for Democrats to express their frustration and outrage with the Trump administration - there"s money pouring into this race. There are going to be Democrats heading to the polls in Wichita for sure, and they want to make sure that Donald Trump is somebody who Democrats will be able to show their enthusiastic outrage against any...

MARTIN: Enthusiastic outrage, yeah.

MONTANARO: It is the first in a series of special elections we"re going to be watching.

MARTIN: Let"s nod to another election coming up in Georgia. What"s the dynamic there?

MONTANARO: Well, in Georgia, you have a special election to replace Tom Price who is now the HHS, the Health and Human Services secretary for Donald Trump. And Jon Ossoff is a former Capitol Hill aide, 30 years old. He"s raised $8.5 million. It"s more money than he knows what to do with. Consider the Ohio Senate race in the last election. the democrat there only raised $10 million. He"s already got 70 staffers. It is a ton of money that he"s trying to pour in there, the Democrats trying to pick that one off in a district, by the way, that Trump underperformed in. And it"s a much narrower election unlike the one in Kansas.

INSKEEP: Let"s remember then in 2009 after Democrats captured everything, they began losing everything. And surely this is what Democrats hope will begin to happen in this year. Now the Republicans seem to dominate. This is the beginning of a kind of season of bellwether elections we"ll have later in the year, governors elections in Virginia and New Jersey - much to watch. But as for today"s race, remember what Domenico said. This district is in Kansas really, really Republican.

MARTIN: All right. We"re going to say goodbye to our friend Domenico Montanaro of NPR"s Politics team.

INSKEEP: Bye, Domenico.

MARTIN: Thanks for getting up early.

MONTANARO: Thanks as always.

MARTIN: And we"re going to move over to China now for a different kind of perspective on a story you may have heard about. Right, Steve?

INSKEEP: Absolutely. You know that video of a passenger being dragged from a United Airlines flight? Sounds a little bit like this.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)

UNIDENTIFIED MAN: (Screaming).

UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN: No. No. Oh, my G*d. Oh, my G*d.

INSKEEP: Not a happy passenger being pulled by the arms. That sound is bloodcurdling. Well, the airline said it needed its seat, and he refused to get out, even when offered money. And he was pulled off and bloodied. Well, this story has gone viral in China because according to a witness, the man said he was targeted for being Chinese.

MARTIN: OK. So for a quick rundown of this, we"ve got NPR Shanghai correspondent Rob Schmitz on the line. Hi, Rob.

ROB SCHMITZ, BYLINE: Good morning.

MARTIN: How is this story playing in China?

SCHMITZ: Well, this video has gone viral faster than any that I can remember in my seven years as a journalist here. One of the videos of it that I was tracking today had 120 million views by 3 in the afternoon.

INSKEEP: Wow.

SCHMITZ: And when I looked half an hour later, it was up to 130 million. So that was moving at a rate of about 20 million views an hour. And that was just one replaying of the video attached to a single hashtag on Webo, one of China"s largest social media sites. So when you consider the hundreds of other media outlets here that are playing this video too, the estimate is likely much higher.

MARTIN: So I mean, this is - has provoked calls to boycott United, both here in the States and in China, I understand. Does the Chinese government see this as a kind of opportunity to shame a major American corporation?

SCHMITZ: Well, I mean, when there"s so much public rage over an incident like this, I"m not sure if the government of China feels like it needs to do much more than just get out of the way.

MARTIN: Let it just go.

SCHMITZ: I mean, United - yeah, United is obviously a competitor of many of China"s state run airlines for across Pacific routes to and from the U.S. and Canada. So what I"d imagine we"ll see in the days to come is a lot of coverage on state-run television news and the newspapers. But overall, this promise is just to get a lot of play here in China. And that has a lot to do with public demand for it, rather than government propaganda.

MARTIN: Also a reminder, man - cell phone videos.

INSKEEP: There you go.

MARTIN: They"re everywhere.

INSKEEP: They change the world.

MARTIN: They capture things. They change the world indeed.

INSKEEP: Also the market - the guy had bought his seat. He paid for his seat.

MARTIN: It"s true. It"s true.

INSKEEP: People sympathize.

SCHMITZ: That"s right.

MARTIN: Hey, Rob Schmitz in Shanghai, thanks so much for your time...

SCHMITZ: Yes.

MARTIN: ...This morning breaking down the story. And...

SCHMITZ: Thank you.

Black Ops 2 REVEALED for Xbox One Backwards ... - Daily Express

BLACK OPS 2 XBOX ONE GAMEPLAY!

A recent error was spotted on an Xbox website that listed the popular COD title as a Backwards Compatible game, soon to be made available.

And one fan checking it over appeared to find something very interesting, that Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 had been listed as a Deals with Gold offer alongside other titles.

Black Ops 2 for Xbox One Backwards Compatibility could be found nestled between Black Ops and the Black Op 3 DLC options, along with Call of Duty Classic.

Deals with Gold usually includes a range of discounts on both Xbox One and Xbox 360 games, however, this week also included Black Ops 2 listed as part of the BC program.

This has now been changed but it didnt stop fans from asking what it meant.

After one player asked if Black Ops 2 could be announced as Backwards Compatible on Tuesday, October 11, Xbox"s Larry Hryb was forced to disappoint.

That was my error. Sorry. Not coming to BC tomorrow, Hryb replied.

However, even though black ops 2 will not be made Backwards Compatible tomorrow, Hryb didnt rule out its eventual inclusion.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 remains the most requested Backwards Compatibility title from the Xbox 360, with a total vote count of 193,000.

Three new Xbox One Backwards Compatibility games were released earlier this week, taking the total number of titles to six that have made their debut of late.

It means fans can start dusting off old copies of Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, Puzzle Quest Galactrix, and Puzzle Quest 2.

Alternatively, Xbox One Gold users can download the collection of games if they were previously purchased digitally, or they can buy them from the Microsoft Store.

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed was voted to be included in the Backwards Compatibility by over 5,000 gamers, while Puzzle Quest Galactrix received just under 500 and Puzzle Quest 2 1,200.

The Sonic racing title is also the game which will take the longest to download and play, weighing in at 4GB. Lost Odyssey, Toy Story 3 and arcade shoot-em-up Guwange were the last games to be made Backwards Compatible by Microsoft in September.

President Donald Trump Steps Into Kansas Special Election Fray | Morning Joe | MSNBC

In the Kansas special election on Tuesday to replace former congressman (and current CIA director) Mike Pompeo, the Republican candidate won by seven percentage points (52.5 percent to 45.7 percent, with almost all precincts reporting).

John McCormack Senior Writer The Weekly Standard http://s3.amazonaws.com/assets.weeklystandard.com/authors/mccormack.png

Sorry, you"ve reached the limit on the articles you can view.

In the Kansas special election on Tuesday to replace former congressman (and current CIA director) Mike Pompeo, the Republican candidate won by seven percentage points (52.5 percent to 45.7 percent, with almost all precincts reporting).

That performance was poor enough compared to November 2016 that some are sounding the alarm about a Democratic tsunami in 2018. Trump won the district in 2016 by 27 points, and Pompeo won by 31 points (61 percent to 30 percent). If a similar swing occurs next fall nationwide, it would certainly wipe out the GOP"s majority in the House.

The argument against panicking is that this particular election was much more about local Kansas politics than Trump or the national GOP. Sam Brownback"s budgets have made him a very unpopular governor, and GOP congressional candidate Ron Estes is closely tied to Brownback as the state"s treasurer. Although Estes ran poorly compared to Trump and Pompeo in 2016, he ran slightly ahead of Brownback and about as well as GOP senator Pat Roberts in 2014. This was just one special election, and upcoming special elections in georgia and montana will show if Kansas is part of a trend. Of course, it"s also worth remembering that special elections do not always predict national trends. As Sean Trende wrote on Tuesday: "Special elections in 2004 saw Democrats win deep-red seats such as South Dakota"s At-Large seat and Kentucky"s 6th District, yet the general elections were a disappointment for the party (to say the least). For that matter, if Republicans do well, Democrats shouldn"t panic either; Republicans faced two dispiriting special election losses in New York and one in Pennsylvania before their 2010 landslide wins."

The case for panicking is perhaps stronger: Trump"s approval rating is already in the low 40s, and the biggest question for the mid-term elections is probably whether or not his rating recovers. If it"s stuck at 40 percent in November 2018, it"s very hard to see the GOP holding on.

North Korea: China needs to put pressure on rogue state, Malcolm Turnbull says

US strike group heads toward North Korea

Posted April 12, 2017 18:11:47

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has accused China of not doing enough to control the reclusive North Korean regime, which has threatened a nuclear attack on the United States.

Key points:
  • World concerned about "reckless and dangerous" conduct of North Korea, Malcolm Turnbull says
  • Christopher Pyne says North Korea poses "greatest threat" to global security
  • Mr Turnbull stressed sanctions, "other means" to put pressure on the regime

Last week that threat led US President Donald Trump to declare that he would "solve the problem" of North Korea with or without China, which shares a border with the regime.

Speaking in India today, Mr Turnbull said the entire world was concerned about the "reckless and dangerous" conduct of the North Korean regime, which threatens regional stability and global peace.

"The time has come for all parties but particularly China, which has the closest relationship with North Korea to bring pressure to bear through the sanctions regime and other means to ensure they cease this reckless and dangerous conduct," he said.

Mr Turnbull said China was "clearly not doing enough" to control North Korea.

"The Chinese side would say they have imposed some sanctions, but the reality is the regime is threatening peace and stability in the world," he told Sky News.

"The Chinese are the parties with the greatest leverage over North Korea, that"s a fact."

North Korea poses "greatest threat" to global security, Pyne says

Late last year, China, which is believed to be the only country buying North Korean coal, announced it would slash its imports in line with international sanctions after a ballistic missile test.

US officials have stressed that stronger sanctions are the most likely US course to press North Korea to abandon its nuclear program.

Mr Trump has accused North Korea of "looking for trouble" and recently diverted a US Navy strike group towards the peninsula as a show of force amid concerns about its nuclear program.

Earlier on Wednesday, Defence Industry Minister Christopher Pyne said the north korean regime was unpredictable and posed the "greatest threat" to global security.

"We welcome the US taking a firm line with North Korea and as Malcolm Turnbull has said, it is very important that China takes full responsibility for what it can do to settle that part of the world," he said.

Mr Pyne said the unpredictability of the regime was "of significant consequence to Australia".

"I know it seems surprising to say so, but there is a predictability about the war in the Middle East, in Syria and Iraq, and of course the allies there are winning that war slowly but surely," he told Adelaide radio station 5AA.

Washington officials have said all options, including military ones, are on the table and that a US strike last week against Syria should serve as a warning to Pyongyang.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer said Mr Trump had put North Korea "clearly on notice" that he would not tolerate certain actions, but dismissed Pyongyang"s nuclear attack threat.

Sean Spicer: Trump"s stance on refugee admission has not changed after Syrian chemical attack

Sean Spicer: Hitler didn"t use chemical weapons

White House press secretary sean spicer shut down speculation that President Trump"s emotional reaction to the chemical weapons attack that killed 80 in Syria last week had altered the administration"s stance on Syrian refugees.

In response to a question from a reporter about whether Trump was rethinking his travel ban"sstipulation barring Syrian refugees from entering the US, Spicer began, "I think you"ve heard a lot of these refugees talk about the fact in particular that they"re not looking to flee" Syria.

When reporters specified that the question was with regardto those who did want to leave the war-torn country, he said that the administration"s priority was to protect Americans" safety and to create a situation in which Syrians did not have to flee their home country.

"That"s our number one goal: creating a safer environment, deescalating the conflict there," Spicer said. "The goal isn"t to figure out how many people we can just import to this country."

Despite his assertion that Trump had been "touched" by images of victims of the chemical weapons, he implied that the attackwould not prompt a change in US policy towards accepting Syrian refugees.

"They have touched him, and I think that"s what he made very clear. That"s why, with the consent and guidance of his national security team" Trump ordered a military strike targeting the airfield from which the chemical weapons had been deployed, Spicer said.

"It was very extreme, it was moving. I don"t think you can watch those things ... when you see young children and babies being gassed, it should move any human being," he added, before saying that images of young children and babies who had been injured or killed as a result of the attack had played a role in Trump"s final decision to authorize the strike.

Kendrick Lamar"s new album arrives April 14

The Evolution of Kendrick Lamar’s Cover Art From His First EP to "DAMN"

On Kendrick Lamars new single, The Heart Part 4, he fired off a rather ferocious warning:

Yall got till April 7 to get yall together.

Many assumed thats when the Compton rapper was dropping his next album. Turns out he was simply whetting our appetite for the album, which will be released on April 14.

Hours before the clock hit midnight on his April 7 deadline, the pre-order for Lamars new record appeared on iTunes. There arent many details about the project his first proper studio album since 2015s "To Pimp a Butterfly. Neither the title, cover art nor tracklist was revealed when the pre-order went live.

Currently bearing the placeholder title of ALBUM with a black album cover, the 14-track project includes the Mike WiLL Made-It-produced banger Humble, whose accompanying video sparked much celebration, and debate, about lamars representation of black women.

Humble is the only song title listed on the pre-order link. The Heart Part 4, his fourth entry in a career-spanning series of freestyles, isnt listed here.

Last year, Lamar issued "Untitled Unmastered, a collection of recordings pulled from the To Pimp a Butterfly sessions.

The arrival of Lamars new album is just in time for his gig at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival next weekend. Two days after its release, he will close out the festival with a headlining show that will see the live debut of his new material.

Kendrick Lamar Week: His best verse

Kendrick Lamar’s “Damn.” Album Features Guest Appearances From Rihanna & U2

Kendrick Lamar a.k.a. The King of Rap is releasing his fourth studio album this Friday. So we here at TNJN thought that we would honor Kendricks divine status by providing you all with our scorching Kendrick Lamar takes. David Bradford, Quinn Pilkey and Robert Hughes will reveal their favorite Kendrick feature, verse, song and album.

BEST VERSE

Kendrick Lamar is a rapper who raps verses. Most of the time (read 100 percent of the time), he transports you to an alternate dimension. And in that alternate dimension, he still exists, so you go to another alternate dimension. And in that alternate dimension, he still exists, so you go to another alternate dimension. And in that alternate dimension, he still exists, so you go to another alternate dimension. And in that alternate dimension, he still exists, so you go to another alternate dimension. And in that alternate dimension, he still exists, so you go to another alternate dimension. And in that alternate dimension, he still exists, so you go to another alternate dimension. And in that alternate dimension, he still exists, so you go to another alternate dimension.

You get the point.

Bradford

First verse of HiiiPower. Shut up and dont @ me with another verse, peasants. This is early Kendrick its onSection.80 but this is the verse that catapulted his confidence so he could give the worldgood kid, m.A.A.d. cityandTo Pimp a Butterfly.

Lets take this line-by-line, word-by-word and syllable-by-syllable.

Visions of Martin Luther staring at me/Malcolm X put the hex on my future some catch me.

Immediately, we see Kendrick bringing up two prominent Civil Rights figures (MLK and Malcolm X), but whats interesting is his exclusion of MLKs last name, which makes me think this is a double entendre for Martin Luther King Jr. and Martin Luther. I could be wrong because my IQ resembles the plastic bag I just put over my head. I just thought it was interesting.

Im falling victim to a revolutionary song/The Serengetis Clone/Back to put you backstabbers back on your spinal bone.

Ive had plenty of backstabbers in my life. Two of my ex-girlfriends cheated on me. So I want to put them on their spinal bones. Haha jk i dont actually care.

You slipped your disc when I slid you my disc/You wanted to diss but jumped on my d***.

HOW. DOES. HE. DO. THIS.

Refer to the back on your spinal bone part in the previous line. Kendrick then says You slipped your disc when I slid you my disc, which refers to a spinal injury when listening to his music.

Then, of course, people want to diss Kendrick. But then they hear his verses, re-evaluate if they enjoy existing on this planet and become faux fans.

Grown men never should bite their tongue/Unless you eating p**** that smell like its a stale plum.

I got my finger on the morthaf***** pistol/Aiming it at a pig, Charlottes web is going to miss you.

WHAT.

HOW.

OMG.

The first time I heard this line, I went repeated it at least a dozen times. ACharlottes Webreference in a song is so dope. Wow, Kendrick, please! I have a family!

My issue isnt televised and you aint gotta tell the wise/How to stay on beat because our lifes an instrumental.

This is getting ridiculous. The words beat and instrumental are obviously related, as instrumentals are usually centered around beats. Haha.

This is physical and mental, I wont sugar coat it/Youd die from diabetes if these other n***** wrote it.

My. Word.

This verse isnt even humanat this point. Kendrick wont sugar coat what hes saying, but if somebody else said it, there would be so much sugar coating or in LeBrons case, sugar coding that youll get diabetes and die.

Kendrick, not in front of my children!

And everything on TV just a figment of imagination/I dont want a plastic nation, dread that like a Haitian/While you mothaf***** waiting, I be off the slave ships/Building pyramids, writing my own hieroglyphs.

The perfect ending to this monstrous verse. Kendrick fears a plastic nation, but while everybody is sitting around, he started making moves.

Six years later, hes the King.

Bow.

Hughes

My personal favorite is one of his longest verses, but his rhythm, rhyme, storytelling and speed are just too good for me to overlook.

Spoiler: Its the first verse in m.A.A.d. city from the albumgood kid, m.A.A.d. city.

Strap on your seat belts and bring your inhaler; heck, bring an EpiPen, because this verse is a lot to handle. Here we go.

Like David did, were going to take this a few lines at a time.

Brace yourself

Dangit, I couldnt even make it past this line without stopping. Kendrick is literally telling all of us to brace ourselves because hes about to spit a verse so mind-boggling that we need to take some time to prepare ourselves, but then he keeps going and you are already playing catch-up, just trying to hang on for dear life the rest of the verse. Anyway, lets start back from the top

Brace yourself/Ill take you on a trip down memory lane/This is not a rap on how Im slinging crack or move cocaine/This is cul-de-sac and plenty Cognac and major pain/Not the drill sergeant but the stress that weighin on your brain.

Ok, Kendrick, chill out. Thats a lot for me to process. So youre going to tell me a a little about your past and how you werent a drug dealer, but you were still caught up with the pressures of substance abuse (all while making a reference to a pretty good movie). Thats cool, but just give me some t

Nope. He just keeps going.

It was me, L Boog, and Yan Yan/YG lucky ride down Rosecrans/It got ugly waving your hand out the windowCheck yourself, uh.

I assume all of those people are his friends, but the most important part of this verse is the uh. He gives us, if only for a moment, a split-second to (attempt to) catch up to what hes said and what hes about to say.

Warriors and Conans/Hope euphoria can slow dance/with society/the driver seat/the first one to get killed/Seen a light-skinned [expletive] with his brains blown out/At the same burger stand where *beep* [a gang] hang out/Now this is not a tape recorder saying that he did it/But ever since that day, I was looking at him different.

Stop. The. Match.

Kendrick, please, man, youve already told us enough. I dont want to be an accessory to the crime you are talking about or the crime you are currently committing by murdering this verse. Just stop, man. You win.

Nope, he continues.

That was back when I was nine/Joey packed the nine/Pakistan on every porch is fine/We adapt to crime/Pack a van with four guns at a time/With the sliding door.

You witnessed this when you were nine years old? NINE. YEARS. OLD?! And then he just keeps going, like its not a big deal. He was used to the violence and being around guns all the time already. Wow. But hes not done, not even close.

[Expletive] you shooting for if you aint walking up you [expletive] punk?/Picking up the [expletive] pump/Picking off you suckers/Suck a [expletive] or die or sucker punch/A wall of bullets coming from/AKs, ARs, Aye yall, duck,/Thats what momma said when we was eating that free lunch.

This portion is a blend of tragedies. Violence is so prevalent in his life that hes not afraid to tempt death, but then he hits you with more sadness when he says that his family has to be wary of gang violence, even while eating a lunch that his family cannot afford themselves.

Aw man, [expletive]/All h**l broke loose/You killed my cousin back in 94/[Expletive] your truce/Now crawl your head in that noose/You wind up dead on the news/Aint no peace treaty/Just pieces BGs up to pre-approve.

Now, its personal for him, so he goes even harder these last few lines.

Bodies on top of bodies/IVs on top of IVs/Obviously the coroner between the sheets like the Isleys/When you hop on the trolley/Make sure your colors correct/Make sure youre corporate or theyll be calling your mother collect/They say the governor collect/all of our taxes, except/when we in traffic and tragic happens/That [expletive] aint no threat/You moving backwards if you suggest that you sleep with a TEC/Go buy a chopper and have a doctor on speed dial, I guess/m.A.A.d. city.

How? How is he this good? Hes telling a story about gang violence and how nobody cares about it while absolutely destroying a verse at the same time. I dont understand.

Thats why hes the best, and thats why I cannot contain my excitement for his new album.

Pilkey

Theres no verse in Kendrick Lamars entire discography that evokes more emotion than the second verse on Sing About Me. The song comes near the end of good kid, m.A.A.d City, after the climax of the albums story. The entire song is gut-wrenching in the way it paints characters of Compton residents that Kendrick knew in his early life. The second and most powerful verse is sung from the perspective of a young prostitute, the sister of the titular character in Section.80s Keishas Song. The narrator berates Kendrick for using her sisters story to sell albums:

You wrote a song about my sister on your tape / And called it Section.80, the message resembled Brendas Got a Baby / Whats crazy was, I was hearing about it / But doubted your ignorance how could you ever just put her on blast and sh*t / Judging her past and sh*t, well, its completely my future

She feels that Kendrick has co-opted a deeply personal story for his own gain. It seems to be a sensitive subject for kendrick: he attempts to bring light to serious issues he faced in his youth without exploiting those around him. The emotion in his voice is palpable through this verse as he views things from the perspective of someone who feels used by him. Still, as the narrator says several bars later, she doesnt care about Kendricks intentions.

And Im exhausted, but f*ck that Sorry for your loss sh*t / My sister died in vain, but what point are you trying to gain / If you cant fit the pumps I walk in? Ill wait / Your rebuttal a little too late / And if you have an album date, just make sure Im not in the song / Cause I dont need the attention bring enough of that on my own

Kendrick shows empathy for the narrator and is able to see things from her perspective. Still, he knows that he wants to get her story out into the world and ultimately decides to do just that yet still show a different perspective by including this verse on the album.

And matter fact, did I mention I physically feel great? / A doctors approval is a waste of time, I know Im straight / Ill probably live longer than you and never fade away / Ill never fade away, Ill never fade away, I know my fate

There are inherent dangers in the narrators line of work, but she doesnt care. In fact, she feels immune from those dangers. She attacks Kendricks career as rap, implying that his fame will fade as she continues to thrive. She repeats that point several times. The verse continues, but the voice fades out. Just seconds after she announces she will never fade away, she literally fades away. The next verse is from Kendrick Lamars perspective.

Its not his most exciting verse or his most impressive technically. But if theres one verse that combines Kendricks natural rapping ability, the emotions that he can evoke and his social consciousness and empathy, its this one. And thats what makes it his best.
